Gunnar, thank you for this review I have been considering a Pike/Musky rod and the TFO is on my short list. There are no fly shops near me so I have to rely on reviews and luck when I purchase rods. You have a very informative channel and you are such a good host. Keep up the great work and thank you again for teaming up with TFO for this review.

A very thorough review of what looks like an excellent all around Big Fly chucking rod. I never expect a Gunnar video to be less than 30 minutes long so 38 minutes works. I have TFO 10 weight rod that has a red Winn golf grip on it (can’t remember the name but I believe it starts with V), I got it back in 2014-15, back in the BVK, Predator rod days from TFO. I like it but I have always wanted to either build or buy a 10-11 weight with the longer butt section for the reasons that you mentioned. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and showing how it can handle a variety of line weights and fly sizes. 😎🎣

Always been a big fan of TFO, and glad that this comes with a tube. I've had a few of their trout rods, and every one came with a sock but no tube. Honestly, that's been my only complaint. And I do know how comments and replies work! (Unless it's obviously a scammer, that's been going around lately)

Awesome review. You're making me want to buy another fly rod. I bought a 9 weight TFO about 2 years ago, and I was very impressed with it. It throws big flies just as easily or better than my 10 weights. It was the 9 ft., 9 wt. "Lefty Kreh Professional". It's a 4 piece rod. I wasn't sure if I would like a 4 piece rod being this is the first 4 piece rod I ever owned, but there were no negative issues with it. I used it with several different lines, and it handled very nicely. I understand now why so many guys rave about the TFO rods. Buying that rod made me a believer in TFO. I have a St. Croix Legend Ultra 10 weight that I bought used on Ebay. I have no complaints about the St. Croix, It's a nice rod. I don't really have anything to compare it to other than a 10 weight Eagle Claw fiberglass rod that was my first 10 weight rod. The Eagle Claw was cheap on Ebay used, and it got me in the game. It's heavy and a chore to cast, but it can get the job done. It gives me an alternate rod that I can rig differently, so I guess it does serve a purpose. I bought a kayak last year, and have been doing some serious musky fishing. I've been watching your tying videos and have been tossing big stuff. I'm learning through experience what rod, line, fly combinations seem to go together well. You have to spend time on the water experimenting with different things. Casting the big stuff for muskies is way different than trout fishing. This is a whole new ball game for sure. I had a couple follows from nice fish last year. I'm still after my first fly rod musky though. Thanks for a great review, you really covered all the bases of what fly casters want in a rod.

Great timing for your reviews to start coming out! I’m just getting serious about looking for a musky specific rod. I really appreciate how every opinion or bit of instruction you put out is thought through so thoroughly and in detail. I feel a lot of the influential people in our industry are sharing opinions that are tragically under-thought. Glad to see you’re being part of the solution! Keep up the good work.

I love every tfo rod ive ever had in my hands and was the company that got me all started in fly fishing! been handed many of less expensive and many of drastically more expensive rods…i always find my way back to tfo. I have the 12wt esox but its kinda overkill for the waters i fish, i wish i had went with a 10wt. I always wanted to test the bc big fly but never had the opportunity arise, of course it came out like a week after i got my esox go figure 😂 but your great in depth review only confirmed i need to get my hands on one. all i fish for here is esox species and throw big flys!

Again and always Gunnar, thank you. Every video you’ve made has been an honest, no-nonsense, educated and extremely useful wealth of information that you generously share. The effort you clearly invest in all of it, and the sincerity of it, does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. You certainly do bring an immense amount of information and experience to a community that has the privilege of learning from it freely. With such a detailed and complete review, never quite saw one that good before, it’s hard to not feel extremely confident about wanting and needing that rod. I have never commented on a video before, anywhere. You’ve just made me do it for the first time, and my motivation was to thank you. So thank you :)

I’ve had a BC for about 2 years now in a 12wt and there are only 2 relatively minor negative things I have to say about it. The first is the thin wire guides in the upper sections are a little flimsy, so make sure your line to leader connections are smooth because they won’t stand up to a lot of fatigue. The other is that if you have average to larger hands, you might find that a bit larger diameter handle would be more comfortable and easy to feel with frozen hands. Other than that, I’ll echo that it does handle the high end of its rated grain range well, but seems to prefer more in the middle. A great “lighter duty” musky rod and an excellent rod for throwing magnum striped bass flies. It absorbs shock a little better than others and handles your standard bufords, t-bones, and bucktail changers up to 12” very well on a mid weight ~500gr. line. If you’re looking for something to handle truly massive flies and 600+gr. then you might consider other options.
