You could of fab'ed that simple set of dumps with about 6 bends in the same time you played around with $1200 of legos.

@@cody2254 I'm gonna be honest, that setup didn't show them off in a way that really benefited them but it could be really useful. I really like the look of the old school 2 stroke exhausts made up from what to be blunt is far more cuts than is necessary and the shogun look like a good way to ensure I get that sort of look in a way thats QUICK to mockup and tack. Would I do the whole system, probably not, can I see a use sure.

Make sure the customer knows what to expect and what the look is going to be with the “lobster” bends. I built a similar exhaust. When completed, the customer did not like the multiple welds, so he had me grind them down smooth. I got paid right for the extra welding, but it still hurt to know that i could had built it off from regular mandrel and be done faster

Problem is casting is expensive in small to medium quantity, something like this the moulds aren't going to last that long and they will be fairly labour intensive. The question is like the man says where do you want to spend the money, on the materials or the labour time. For a home builder who is going to tack and take to a buddy to finish the welding I can see the temptation. Similarly having a couple to do a small portion of the exhaust or for the look of the scallopping and blueing of the welds. End of the day its just another tool in the toolbox.

I suppose if covered with heat-wrap it will look just fine. But as a bare metal finish I think it looks like crap. I agree that the product cuts labor costs if this is important, but for a hobbyist the cost is outrageous and the product takes away from the creative experience of working from scratch. If left exposed, to me, it looks like a blatant display of money thrown at a project.

If you factor in the time and everything it might be worth it. If you want your bike back sooner than later also, time is money. Depending on what the hourly rate of the fabricator is, if it saves 2 hours of labor @100$ an hour or more, you could get 10+ shogun cuts for the same price and have the product done 2 hours earlier.
@jameswoodsist
@jameswoodsist 6 лет назад
as a professional fabricator i couldnt justify the cost at all. not when a 10 foot section of tube (enough to do several of these motorcycle exhausts) costs as much as a single shogun cut. the price is just not viable imo. any fabricator that has the skill to attract a customer willing to pay 1200 dollars for an exhaust should be able to do a pie cut exhaust from regular tubing that looks just as good if not better in a reasonable time frame.

I like the thickness but the scallop is offputting. The idea used to be clean bends. Then stainless came and it was clean welded bends. Now I'm not wasting money on these and it's only the look. Chops are about looks and these start reminding me of that crappy flex exhaust tubing that shows up once in awhile.

I'm just trying to understand how they would rob you of power. Do you know how or why they would? EDIT: Nevermind, I found some info. It says the effect is minimal at only 2% - 3% and this below. "A straight pipe, for example, can cause exhaust gas velocity to increase. This will likely reduce engine performance below 2,000 or 2,500 RPM, making your vehicle a little slower to launch from a stoplight. Your engine may show more horsepower on a dyno - and might even finish the quarter mile a little faster - but it won’t be faster on the street." Not enough to worry too much about IMO.

So after you fab it up with those things. Take that pipe profile to a mandrel bending shop and have it done properly in seamless pipe so there is no edges to create turbulence inside the pipe which WILL happen with all those pieces. This is how a backyard hack makes an exhaust. If youve never had a formal education in pneumatics and hydraulics then you wouldn't know how bad a little edge or angle in a pipe adds turbulence to the flow.
