Don't be afraid that Thai language is too difficult to practice because of the tonal tone. If only to communicate with Thai people .They'll be able to guess what you meant in that situation.

Regarding taxis, my girlfriend is Thai and lives in Bangkok. She has the same issue with taxi drivers declining fares or wanting to negotiate a higher fare off the meter. It's not just farangs. Bangkok traffic is often gridlocked, and taxi drivers feel the metered rate doesn't compensate them enough for sitting in traffic. We always ask a few drivers to get an idea of what they want and then decide accordingly. Sometimes, the first two or three drivers might want a higher, fixed rate fare, but then the next one will go by the meter. I don't feel these drivers are dishonest. They work hard and just want to get by.

This was so funny haha when Jin said that even he drives crazy sometimes I was really laughing. I recently visited Bangkok and Phuket and there was a lot of wild driving, though mostly I saw it with motorcycles. No risk, no reward, I guess 😂 Also, the taxi negotiations are so real! My friends split off from my one night to go to a restaurant and they came back suuuuuper late and the next morning I asked if they’d been able to catch the BTS or if they did Grab - but they said they’d gotten a cab and since I was the ‘translator’ I knew that they hadn’t negotiated and when I dared ask how much the driver charged them they told me 600 baht! And they were legit like…so close 😭 I always love these vids, thanks for creating!

He was actually correct when he said English only has 24 consonants at 7:45. The English *alphabet* has 26 letters - 21 consonants and 5 vowels - but the English alphabet isn't fully phonetic. English has 24 distinct consonant sounds (**maybe more if you consider different pronunciations of the /r/ sound as separate phonemes, or if you count the glottal stop that very rarely appears in words like "uh-oh", or if you count ejectives as different from plosives) and at least 20 distinct vowel sounds (depending on your native accent)

The ripping off foreigner part is real. My friend and I went to Phuket a few years ago. I was born and raised in Thailand before moving to the States, and my friend is an American. During our trip, there were several tourist places where they would charge me with "Thai price" as I have an Asian look and was able to speak Thai fluently (even though in term of citizenship wise, I'm no longer Thai) while my friend, for example, was charged tripled of what I paid because he's a foreigner. The taxis are probably the most notorious when it comes to this. One of my friends, who is a Korean, was charged 3000 THB for riding from Patong beach to Phuket airport, but in my case I was asked for 700 THB for the same distance. What make it even more interesting is that the taxi manager was gonna charge me for 500 THB originally, but the driver asked for more since "he had to drive me to the airport with my big luggages."

I am an American retiree living in Thailand 6 years now. Here is my take on these stereotypes 1. Yes Thai people are kind. In particular they are non-confrontational at least in public. 2. I love Pad Thai Gai but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Thai person eat Pad Thai. 3. I’ve never experience a tourist scam but I’m sure it happens. 4. I think about 30% of the Thai population is directly connected to working in agriculture and I think it is mostly small farms. This leads to the impression that Thailand is a poor country. In the US only about 2-3% of the population is farmers and a lot of it is large efficient corporate farming. 5. I don’t think most Thai women prefer foreign men as is true in most countries. However some do and what makes SE Asia unique is that age gap relationships are more common and generally accepted in Thailand. I can speak from experience on this one. 6. Statistically there cannot be more transgendered individuals in Thailand but they are far more open and accepted and visible in Thai society. 7. There are of course some reckless drivers in Thailand but I don’t think it is much different than the US. The game changer is the abundance of motorbikes on the road. Motorbikes are just more vulnerable on the road leading to most traffic deaths being motorbike accidents. Driving etiquette in Thailand is different than the US. I would describe it as a merging culture than a stop/go driving culture. Once you get used to it though I sort of prefer it. 8. In many ways the Thai language is easier than English but the tonal thing can definitely get you.

In regard to #3 (most tourists get ripped off), as long as you're only being ripped off a little at a time, then it's okay, taxis, paying extra for the farang price, etc. I asked my friend if he thought Thailand was a rip-off. He said, "lady drinks", were a massive rip-off. I was like, "What? Paying a little extra for drinks for girls at a bar. Are you kidding?" It's the big scams you have to look out for. E.g. When you hire a jet-ski, and it breaks down on you from no fault of your own, and you end up having to pay $1,000 AUD for it. It's those type of scams you have to be careful of.

Ah, I get it! I wonder for a while about short video about 'Thai people don't eat Pad Thai until they sniffed glue'. I wonder why do they think like that. I think that video is based on your interview, Paddy. ;) Personally, I'm a Thai and love Pad Thai. However, frequency of my Pad Thai eating is based on some conditions including whether nice Pad Thai vendors/restaurants are located nearby me or not. If yay - I will eat it almost everyday. If nay - I still eat it but not much. P.S. 4:17 The lady in white dress don't say 'I prefer Korean dudes' but say 'You (black dress lady) should tell him you prefer the Korean guys.' P.S.2 I like your interviewing. You interviewed with Thai people on both genders and several generations. So you had quite inclusive and accurate answers. I think both genders and each generations have different experience and opinions. So if you ask them all, general information from them is really interesting. :)

Hey Paddy! I really like your videos! I'm a foreigner in Thailand and I've been here for almost 5 years. I don't know how this might come across, but I've noticed that there is an uncomfortably high number of tomboys and tomboy lovers (dee) here. Ladyboys aren't that many here unless deliberately looked for. When I came to Thailand, I had first heard that the woman to men ratio was higher for women. I now realize that it doesn't translate to women seeking to date men are more. When we in general talk about transgenders in Thailand, we think of ladyboys, but we almost always choose to forget that women as tomboys are also transgenders. Maybe per 1 ladyboy spotted in Thailand, one would spot 15 tomboys or more not counting their success in reeling in their female partners (dee). I've noticed that maybe 10 or even 15% of the women's demographic are tomboys. Not including their partners also being a woman. That roughly adds to 1/4 of the women being out of the market to date men. This statistically lowers the birth rate to a precipitous decline. I can't be the only one who sees this. Elon Musk has warned us about the precipitous birth decline and what effects in has on the infrastructure and economy. Japan also has a declining birth rate with more people dying than being born. Their situation is a carrer situation driving them to choosing to not have partners. I'm not saying that non heterosexual couples are the sole reason of birth decline in Thailand, (financial insecurity as well as pursuing careers among others being also reasons of putting off child bearing) are obvious reasons, but this tomboy and dee trend is too suspicious. Could you ask Thais what they think about the effect women dating woman in such high proportions will cause to the human labor replacement in Thailand in the next 2 decades? And in this sense, would the small amount of children being born nowadays be able to support the Thai economy once they enter working age? I know it's a sensitive topic, but you are seeking discomfort. Yeah, I noticed your shirt!

As a Thai, quick answer for you, replacement rate has been low because of success of birth control policy and socioeconomic pressures. Working mums are very common as well as heterosexual couples without a child. Gays and lesbians, all kinds of LGBTQs are born like that and they should all be accepted. Not a statistician but we just appreciate affectionate relationships between any human and another. I do not see any issues.

@@sahpraphaphorn6240 What you find will vary depending on where you live. In modern Thai society, privacy is quite high, making it seem like different people live and don't care about each other. Therefore, you rarely have the opportunity to meet and make intimacy like Thai society in the past. This can be proved just like when you make friends, there's a difference between new acquaintances and long-time acquaintances. Thais have lived with foreigners for more than 650 years, so they are not surprised or excited by foreigners whom they are familiar with. But it will show differently when meeting foreigners, strangers who come to travel to welcome tourists as a good homeowner. But this does not mean that there are no Thais who take advantage of foreigners and this is the norm when it comes to traveling to any country in the world. If you really want to know the habits of Thai people, I advise you to ask your wife to take you to make merit at the temple on Buddhist Holy day. If the locals know your face inside the temple, their intimacy and expression may change. It doesn't matter what religion you belong to, you can go to the temple and sit at any time when you feel uncomfortable. This may be a bit long but hopefully you will get a better understanding of the basics of Thai people. Good luck! 😊

No doubt Thais have High IQs, high moral and ethical senses while clearly not scammers nor luars about anything. They are fully proud of their Thainess and dont seek to look like others! They are also hard workers and their men are great role models!
