Pharmacies in Thailand operate completely differently than in the western world. If you are planning to retire in Thailand, or maybe just live here for an extended period, medical care, drug availability and drug costs are important.
The great news is not only are generic medications cheaper in Thailand pharmacies than in most other countries, brand name medications are incredibly cheap, at least compared to the United States. Also, a prescription is not needed for medications that would require a prescription elsewhere, such as for Atorvastin (Lipitor), Lisenopril (Zestril), Metformin (Gluophage), Amlodipine (Norvasc), Metoprolol (Lopressor), Albuterol (Ventolin) Sildenafil (Viagra, Cialis), Fluoxetine (Prozac) and many more. This video will also review four categories of pharmacies and where to get your best prices.

I've visited Thailand including Chiangmai a number of times and am thinking about retiring there. I recently discovered your channel and find the level of detail you go in to and the specifics that you give are better than any other channel I've seen. Very very helpful to people who are seriously thinking about moving to Thailand. Many thanks to you and Joy for all the time and effort that you put into this.

As usual, so instructive. I had no clue about price differences between the different types of pharmacies. As for the prices, yes, Thailand is really cheap, but honestly, it's the prices in the USA that are totally out of control! I just can't imagine how huge profits they make on each product. I mean, 66 US$ for Ventolin? It's 4,3 US$ here in Paris, and it's all taken care of by Social Security!

The best pharmacy I've found in Thailand is Fascino. It's a larger country wide chain, so they have pricing leverage with suppliers, resulting in reasonable prices and availability of Rxs to the consumer. Perhaps not the personal service of a mom & pop, but if you know what you need/want, Fascino is the go-to.
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 4 месяца назад
Yes, that's an exception to my comment about chain stores being more. I should have said "big chain stores" as Fascino is usually good, not in the overpriced like the mall chain stores.

It does not hurt to show your prescription from your home country to a Thai pharmacist, but if you go to the category 3 and 4 pharmacies I mentioned, they will almost surely not require a prescription. But they want info to give you the right meds so a prescription from your home country is always helpful to them to give you the same thing.

Great video and very useful. Thanks for making it. My wife and I just got back from visiting Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We are considering retiring there. I asked at a few pharmacies and couldn't get an answer as the cost for Ozempic or if it is available. I know it has been in shortage with many people using it for weight loss. I am prescribed it in the states for diabetes, but wasn't sure if I would be able to get it there and what the approximate price might be? Have you heard of it being available there? Maybe we just checked the wrong places while we were there. Thanks again.

Fascino is a small chain and is quite good with usually a large inventory, but not the high cost of chains like Boots and Watsons. So I'd suggest contacting them. But as you say, you might need to call around. I have no knowledge of that specific medication, sorry. And what they don't have, you can ask if they can order it.

In Khao Yai, the three lady’s behind the counter did not know anything about what they were selling. Curious about pharmacies broad discretion over suggesting and dispensing medicines. Can you be a touch more specific? If you told them you had ED would they just hand over the meds? What about chronic conditions that many have, such as high blood pressure or cholesterol or diabetes? Given that doctor visit prices are quite reasonable, I don't see the downside of getting a professional opinion and a prescription rather than relying on a pharmacist? Good video... you should do one on doctor visits .. a nights stay in a private hospital and getting a cavity filled by a dentist..
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 4 месяца назад
Good ideas! I can't say the limits in prescribing. They use common sense. I think if you said you were on a diabetes med for example, in your home country and know the dosage, they would just give you what you want. There is less "parental supervision" of adults in Thailand. You use your own judgment.

She gets free medical, other perks, and whenever she has to travel it's all expenses paid and 5 star. She's even allowed to take her husband! The cost of her run of the mill job (factor that up by the number of pointless people in the chain of corporations), is contributing to the already inflated prices in America. This is solely due to the fact that everything is a business in America, a money making racket. Money is all Americans identify. Therefore you pay way too much, and accept it. Hi Stefan. Sorry, your point is? You wanted to say Thai cities? BTW, congratulations on saying Hua Hin right. People are incorrect when they make a literal sounding of Hua. Thais pronounce it Hwa Hin. Same with Samui. With Koh, the K is pronounced as a G in Thai.

You have just recorded a Public Service. You're indispensible to your subscribers . Just like Thai pharmacists dispensing medicines . Here is my contribution, 2 of the pharmacies I regularly use in Chiang Mai. 1. Ruamchok Pharmacy , small owner operated by a kind, english speaking gentlemen who is extra knowledgable about generics and will save you a lot of money . 2. Dara Pharmacy, with a number of well trained younger pharmacists speaking english with the owner supervising and open to negotiating prices with price matching . Good fun and huge inventory . You can google these two easily for locations. When you're a regular customer, like me, unfortunately, they get to know you and discounts are automatic . Well , I am sadly a big consumer,buy in job lots😢

First off, thanks for the very nice comment. Coming from you, that is especially nice. When you mentioned it I realized I forgot one of my planned points, that almost all pharmacists speak English, of course some better than others. You win the Comment of the Month award (prize arriving in the mail soon, 555) with your specific reference to two Chiang Mai pharmacies. That will really help locals. I wanted this video to be more national than local, like many of my videos are, so I didn't even think about a specific recommendation. But even if I did, my experience is not as valuable as yours on this point. So big, big thanks!

Wow. American pharmaceutical greed on display. Wow. I'm very fair skinned as you appear to be. I know there will be sun screen but what do you think is the best in Thailand to use?
@RetiredGlobalLife
@RetiredGlobalLife 4 месяца назад
They have plenty of sunscreens available but most are lower SPF, perhaps because Thails have darker skin. Max here is usually 50. Even on Lazada hard to find stronger although there is a spray Neutrogena SPF 70. On my trips to the US I come back to Thailand with a big supply of Picaradin mosquito lotion (available online in Thailand but at 3X the price) and my Neutrogena SPF 70.

But most medicine, while cheap, are not cheap for Thai’s.

Well it is relative yes, but even for Thais most generic medicine is very affordable.

The pharmacists in Thailand if you a Farang they will grossly overcharge you usually especially the small ones . The prices in the hospital pharmacies are much cheaper and seeing the dr and getting blood work the costs are very low

No you are wrong or have had an odd experience. Hospital pharmacies charge more and I have not seen overcharging by small pharmacies although anything is possible. I'd just try a new smaller pharmacy. Fascinos is a great option.

@@RetiredGlobalLife3 trips to Thailand 3 months each. Try Phuket or Samui pharmacies they charge whatever comes to their mind. Depending on the pharmacy you go the same item has a different price. I went to a hospital at Nimman in Chiang Mai saw a Dr and got my pills. In Samui or Phuket the pills would have cost me 120 euros at least I think I paid like 50 Euros at the hospital

I'm Thai and living in Thailand. Two things you need to watch out here: outdated medicines and fake medicines. It's getting very bad for small drugstores, so I only buy medicines from the big chains tores and hospitals even the price is high, but safety is the most important to me.

Are you saying you have had that particular problem in Thailand? Or are you talking about in another country?
