Even the best retirement plans can unravel. This couple had planned their retirement in Thailand. Things were going well until they came to an abrupt halt. How they spent their next 14 years was not part of the plan .

I love these stories where people are not prepaired to retire overseas. How do they not plan correctly. They should have got the maximum.

Fascinating story. I find it difficult to understand how a couple can be so devious, unless they were desperate for money, which it seems they were not. As other commenters remarked, it was pure greed. But once they pulled it off, they must have been continuously worrying whether they were going to be found out. I guess they thought they were cleverer than the insurance companies. Which is not smart, considering all life insurance companies have fraud departments. Keep the stories coming!

Yep, 14 years for that kind of Fraud by elderly couple is pretty heavy. William ,you be careful crossing those roads or Lek’s going to be claiming on your life insurance

Im pretty much aware of whats around me and while I m walking Im always looking around and also listening ..... Yes that pretty much ended there easy retirement plan . I doubt they did the full 14 years , But heck anytime is bad ,,

Just the overall nature of Social Media if often ridiculous. Never is that more evident when criminals are so aloof that social media itself becomes their demise. Great story! The two taboos in conversation? Well one has to be the Government...the other?

The walk you took was quite relaxing in the rain and it amazes me the amount of green space in so many Thai cities and that you don't see litter and infrastructure in disrepair. Thailand has really come a long way since the 1980s. It is obvious that the government has invested in its infrastructure to attract direct foreign investment. This is especially true with respect to industrial and commercial development which with tourism forms the country's Economic Development triangle. Very impressive.

There used to be some really good khao soi restaurants on that street in the silver district. Didn’t get a chance to see if they were still there when I was in town in July.

Insurance Fraud and the amount of the money defrauded could have been a factor in the sentence. This is why Life Insurance companies can take a long time to payoff on policies.

Living here in Los Angeles, I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between walking the streets over there, compared to walking in Downtown LA, it its absolutely filthy here, trash , waste, rats roaches, you name it. As antiquated as some of the buildings may be over there, it was very clean and quite pretty. Seems the citizens there actually care about the towns.

The weather is probably cooler in Thailand than in Europe/US right now.

Hard to say. Thailand ChiangMai lows was 75 F. But, London lows were 60 F. Paris lows were about 65 F. But, the big deal is the humidity which is much higher in Thailand (year around) than Europe. Alot easier for me to have lunch at the park in 100 F (38 C ) with 30% humidity, than 80 F (26 C) with 80%+ humidity. (yea, I watch that stuff alot, and was fine with the 100F park lunch/walk around)

Let the elders realise Thier ideas in society and other ways on how life things and wars come and go are valuable More valuable than pensions . So.no issue . The elders remain as others . It might mean. Call to your embassy but travelling to a county of origin is and for many not a real option. But rianing and joing your community needs thorough. Workmtht is helpful not I know . But assistants . That can bring a better thoughts to many
