Every Friday at 5:15 Thames would be switched to LWT (whether they liked it or not) by the IBA. So a tradition began of saying goodbye and hello. There was no love lost between the two franchisees so they rarely cross-promoted each other during their airtime. 1988 marked LWT’s first move into producing (or commissioning) its own LWT News. Strangely, previous to this, Thames had made local injects for LWT on a Friday night under the brand ‘Thames Weekend News’.
Also promoted in this clip by Sally McLaren is Thames’ new nighttime service which saw a ‘regular 2 AM movie’… which is now called ‘Jackpot 247’.
The LWT News presenter is Pam Royle. Following this quick 90 second update, LWT chose to play their own 5:15 show (different from the Monday-Friday offering of the time, Winner Takes All) and it was one of their classic comedies, Doctor In The House.

Oh it did for me. Used to look forward to the handover religiously every Friday. Even 7pm before the 5.15 slot was added in 1982. Mean weekend has officially started

So strange to see Pam Royle, synonymous with Tyne Tees for years, down south on LWT.

Pam Royle was only there not just to gain experience of reading the news but she helped to establish the service until Linda Dryburgh then Anna Maria Ashe took over in 1989.

0:27 - 0:34 LOL It's almost as if she was beginning to speak but the technicians decided "Screw it." and immediately cut her off. Thanks for the chuckle.

That might explain why some of Doctor In The House on Dvd is missing its Lwt idents as new edits were made for these repeats, which found their way to Network Dvd!

They probably cut the original ident off the master tapes.

Two time-sharing broadcast networks in one frequency. And there's a third: TV-am, then became a 'blocktimer' - GMTV.

Not even a 'Good afternoon from LWT' from the announcer... if there was one there.

+Steve _G From 1988 it was straight into LWT News. Why? Because 1988 was the year LWT finally bothered to produced a proper news programme, instead of relying on Thames to do it, so LWT News took pride of place.

It seems strange in this day and age - why did they even split the TV stations between weekdays and weekends? What was the purpose behind it?
@rtc9063
@rtc9063 2 года назад
At that time there was only three channels. London had the lions share of advertising revenue but they wouldn’t allow one company to operate a seven day franchise and becoming more profitable than the others. That’s why London was spilt.
@brucedanton3669
@brucedanton3669 Год назад
@@rtc9063 That indeed was so by the IBA at the time, which was their line of judgment in which they felt that having one company for London would be more profitable than, presumably all the others of course. Odd really given that from 1993 onwards as we know the ITC and later Ofcom allowed the then ITV companies to buy each other too!! London really of course needed one company I guess looking back now, but that was the case at the time. Also Thames should have won instead of Carlton really! By the way, as I am sure you know, by 1988 of course there were four channels and not three. Thank you anyway!!
@MQsCues
@MQsCues Год назад
@@brucedanton3669 It was the government's decision, in all cases, not the IBA or ITC. The latter replaced the former precisely because the government of the day felt the need to relax the licence restrictions on ownership, monopoly etc. This was done in several phases from 1993 onwards, leading to the first buy-ups within days of them being allowed in 1994, and ultimately to the near monopoly on channel 3. Of course, in the meantime, other channels have proliferated, meaning that the monopoly of ITV ownership is nowhere near as significant as it was in the days of *four channels in the 1980s.

@@MQsCues Thank you of course for the detailed reply too which is most interesting there too.

And as you say of course indeed that the monopoly of ITV ownership now then is nowhere as near as it was in the 1980s of course back then I guess too.
