I would just like to congratulate Halo 5 for no longer being the worst piece of Halo storytelling. It took us many years to eclipse this triumph, but we've finally found a larger dumpster to burn. GGs

I hate that this happened. Because the takeaway that Microsoft and Paramount are going to have from this show's reception isn't, "We made a bad Halo show that nobody liked." It's just going to be, "Nobody likes Halo shows." And they'll use that as an excuse to never make a Halo series or film again.

cant say im satisfied at all even with the cool moments. Really chief does not need cortana to do the impossible. He did it many times on his own. He didnt need to give over his body... smh

I love how this show completely neglects the naval aspects of Halo. Ships can just come and go to whatever system they please without having to fight or sneak through existing blockades. It's not like the source material beats us over the head with how badly outclassed the UNSC navy is. Not like that's why they're losing or anything.

The Spartans almost certainly indirectly killed innocent people including children from urban warfare. Collateral damage in the fog of war. Chief crying about his stolen childhood while disregarding the deaths of civilians was insane. This is nothing but character assassination.

This entire show can be summed up with "I can't believe I just said that sentence"

The fact so many including myself have waited so long for a Halo series to then be given this and i not once could stomach watching any of it. I never thought i'd be thankful knowning that not bothering to watch it would save me.

Kwan's story was very clearly the story that the show runners had already written before they were tasked with the Halo IP. This is a fairly common issue where a company will buy rights to an already successful IP, then grab a script that is already finished and attempt to just alter it to wrap a Skin of the IP around it. Halo's Skin, looked great. As a game-to-live-action project, it looked just like the game. Alien/ship/armor designs, all were pretty close to spot on. Of course, that's where it stopped. How great would it have been if they just followed the first game. Waaay easier to write a script from scratch. Master Chief is a legend. People know about him. A ship comes out of a jump during a battle. Aliens are attacking, chaos is everywhere. Master Chief is tasked with taking Cortana, the ships military AI, and protecting her because she has new intel, and is full of military secrets that can't fall into enemy hands. MC escapes the ship, crash lands on this weird ring thinggy, and begins trying to go gather up the survivors, while the mystery of what this giant ring is grows in the background. As the season progresses, they learn more about the structure, ultimately discovering that it's a super weapon, and then .. the flood. Military action sci-fi turned sci-fi horror. Some of the cinematography in this show was awesome, some of it was way below par. The effects were passible, but could have been better. The utter destruction of all the characters was unacceptable. You cannot establish a hero character by turning him in to an emotional mess in the first episode, then have him remain an emotional mess throughout, only to never learn to process his emotions, but to have to have a sentient AI take him over in order for him to do what he was fucking raised to do from childhood. If you want anyone to care about his emotional journey, you have to firmly establish what he has been for his entire adult/professional/whole life. It's also okay to let the humans be the good guys. It's from their perspective. There's a hostile alien race that wants to exterminate the humans. That's a good enough reason to fight back. The humans didn't do them wrong. They just hate humans and want to murder everyone. They don't really need a believable motivation. At least not at all in the first season. You subtly slip in questions of ethics, and morality, and of the spartans origins, and all that. Then you leave those unanswered for future seasons. YOU HAVE TO ESTABLISH THE WAY THINGS ARE, FOR CHANGE TO HAVE ANY IMPACT ON THE AUDIENCE. They spent all of 3 minutes establishing what the spartans are, then launched straight into their dark creation, and the spartans dealing with it. IT had zero impact because of it.

Bless you for making it through. It's clear this show was made for normies and not those of us who have been fans since day one. Current year showrunners and writers only deconstruct because it's the one trick they have. These people don't know how to write heroes because they don't believe in heroism.

Halo 4 explored Chief's humanity well because it didn't make him any less of a badass, or any worse of a person. It instead puts Chief into new scenarios which challenge him as a person, makes him have to face struggles he can't just punch or shoot through. Game Chief would never have tried to gas Halsey, nor would he have broken the Geneva convention and had sex with a prisoner.

Remember people, 10 years ago Neil Bloomkamp & Peter Jackson wanted to make a Halo movie. They had a draft for a script and Bloomkamp produced that amazing "Halo: Landfall" short film (if you haven´t seen it already, it´s here on youtube), as a "prove of concept" thing. The project went nowhere, because Microsoft & the Hollywood studio couldn´t agree on how to split the financing and profits and Bloomkamp/ Jackson then abandoned the project and instead worked on District 9 together. Instead, we got this raging dumpsterfire here....

You'd think any ship leaving reach without authorization would get shot down by planetary defenses let alone a covenant ship

Not wanting to defend the show, but Kai going for Halsey instead of the Keystone does kinda make sense within the show’s context, as she has removed the pill, and subject to her emotions, such as revenge. That said, Chief and the others should have shot that idea down, and had her tow the line for the mission.

The fans: Thank God it's over! The confirmed season 2: "No. There is another."

This show does a really good job at making you want the Covenant to win.

To recover from this abysmal writing, I would like to see Season 2 start with them putting Chief in a coma so they can extract Cortana from his brain and put her in a chip that goes into his helmet... just like they even show in the opening credits of the show! While this is happening, the fall of Reach begins. Chief wakes up and then story beats from the original canon can pick up from there leading to them escaping on the Pillar of Autumn, stumbling across the ring and then he gets cortana back. I don't know how else you could recover from what they've done to these characters.

I love how the cliffhanger is supposed to leave us wondering is the Chief still there, but once Cortana took over he behaved more like Chief than in the whole show

I'm guessing season 2 will follow the covenant tracking the keystones to reach, leading to the fall of reach, everyone hopping on the pillar of autumn and going to the halo.

Edit: Rules of Nature makes what Cortana does more tolerable. Cortana: ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL. Now Cortana is Harbinger. Man. I've seen a lot of a pattern which looks like they just wanted to make a Mass Effect discount story using surface level story and bare minimum from Halo. Remember when Cortana was the one who did the technical solutions to problems and Chief followed her plans or intel? When they were equal. In Halsey's words, Fall of Reach: Chapter 27. (“Cortana has been programmed with every ONI computer insurgency routine,” Dr. Halsey told him. “And she has a talent for modifying them on the fly. She has our best Covenant-language-translation software as well. Her primary purpose is to infiltrate their computer and communications systems. She will intercept and decode point-to-point Covenant transmissions and give you updated intelligence in the field.” Intel support in an operation where there had been no reconnaissance. The Master Chief liked that. It would level the playing field significantly. “This AI is the computer specialist we’ll be taking onto the Covenant ship,” the Master Chief said. "“Yes . . . and more. Her presence will allow you to utilize the suit more effectively.” John had a sudden flash-AIs handled a great deal of point defense during Naval operations. “Can she control the MJOLNIR armor?” He wasn’t sure he liked that. “No. Cortana resides in the interface between your mind and the suit, Master Chief. You will find your reaction time greatly improved. She will be translating the impulses in your motor cortex directly into motion-she can’t make you send those impulses.” “This AI,” he said, “will be inside my mind?” That must have been what that “upgrade” to his standard-issue UNSC computer interface had been for. “That is the question, isn’t it?” Halsey replied. “I can’t answer that, Master Chief. Not scientifically.” “I’m not sure I understand, Doctor.” “What is the mind, really? Intuition, reason, emotion-we acknowledge they exist, but we still don’t know what makes the human mind work .” She paused, searching for the right words. “We model AIs on human neural networks-on electrical signals in the brain-because we just know that the human brain works . . . but not how, or why. This AI-Cortana-may have conflicting directives.” “There is no need to worry, Master Chief. Cortana has the same mission parameters as you do. Even if that means sacrificing herself-or you-to accomplish it.” The Master Chief exhaled, relieved. “Now, please kneel down. It’s time to insert her memory-processor matrix into the socket at the base of your neck.” The Master Chief knelt. There was a hissing noise, a pop, and then cold liquid poured into the Master Chief’s mind; a spike of pain jammed into his forehead, then faded. “Not a lot of room in here,” a smooth female voice said. “Hello, Master Chief.” ) I feel like they skimmed over this and thought making Cortana the only AI, and able to control a human mind was smart. I also don't understand why this could not have been Chief and Cortana's first meeting. Alternate timeline is no excuse, but it's the current go-to lately. Also Original Halsey is much better than the show Halsey, who really looks like psychopath. Halsey ain't. This is also why I really don't like how they messed up Halsey, Cortana, and John's very complex relationships. This dialogue here, is better than a lot of the clips I have seen.

8 hours. 8 hours to play Halo: Reach, and Halo: CE. That 4 hours for each game would help them alot more than never picking up the games or to even read the books. 4 hours playing Reach you see the Covernant begin the fall of Reach, how it impacted not only the UNSC but also the insurectionists, and how truely powerful not only the Covernant is but also the spartans in the same timeframe. 4 hours of Combat Evolved you get to see the ring for the first time, learning what it is, why it is there, the power it can hold, and maybe (if your playing on easy) learning about the horrors that is beneath the surface of the ring, can change everything. 8 hours is all it takes and the rest of the story can write itself. If you're gonna make a video game TV adaption that is the best way to do so.

Waiting to bring the pelican till the end is smart from a tactical perspective. That was their escape plan for both the Spartans and relics. If it was shot down they would have a very difficult time getting off world. Not till there are no alternatives left would you risk bringing that ship into battle. Not defending the show overall, but a few things are done right (intentionally or by accident).

Liked the part where Cortana took over Chief, first time in the entire show that Chief has somewhat felt like the real one

A lot of people defending not trying to kill the prophets because they don’t know who they are and seem to be non-combatants. Here’s what the writers should have done: -Spartan tries to kill the prophets but energy shields stop the bullet. Covenant go berserk at that and Spartans realize must be important. -A Grunts plasma shot goes stray and hits the shield of the Prophet. Spartans witness an Elite smash the Grunts skull in for that. They realize the prophets must be important.

I really like the idea that was portrayed in Halo 4 cutscenes like ‘about being a machine’ where chief himself forgets that he in fact is human too and not just a machine. I also think they nailed the setting and feel in those cutscenes, it felt real and dark. We’re at war. So the show is quite disappointing to me.

She didn't hear them hating on her, she has shown she's fully on-board with the Covenant religion, and all she will know when she wakes up is that a Human pistol round almost killed her. And most of all the Prophets need her. You saw how angry they got about Atriox nearly killing Chief as their secondary option for a reclaimer? She will be back with a vengeance™️. Just you wait for season 2.

Yeah I agree with you on the “deconstructing the hero” bit. I really wish they could have been bothered to go through the source material and while they initially could be forgiven for thinking the games were just shallow glorifications of violence and war, there are deeper, more mature themes at least hinted towards. We don’t need to be told directly that it’s not just a story about good guy with guns blows up bad guy aliens. The main characters are brain washed children cruelly kidnapped and experimented on in secret by a sociopathic, once-in-a-millenia, super genius with a savior complex who is employed by a fascist military government to create super soldiers capable of crushing an insurrection in order to avoid a war that has the potential to send humanity back to the dark ages. Then an overwhelmingly more advanced conglomeration of fanatically religious alien zealots happens to stumble upon humanity and subsequently make it their mission to wipe out every last human in the galaxy. That’s just scratching the surface, there’s so much to unpack and explore and they could have used that to create a truly mature thought provoking narrative while also retaining that badass energy. All of it was right there to at the very least to draw inspiration from, but they kinda threw it in the trash. Idk man, I don’t expect to have all of my wishes catered to, but some respect for the source material would have been appreciated.

Halo is my favorite series. I’ve been playing the games for 18 years, and never lost interest. But this? I would rather the legacy die than watch it be burned to the ground. This is beyond incompetence. To fail this badly, I can only believe the “creators” of this show hate Halo and want to destroy it.

8:30 I think one of the issues with the close combat is that Spartans are very fast but not like superhuman fast (like captain america vs spidermans powers) which means that they are too fast for normal filming but too slow for the bullet time of the flash/quicksilver etc. which makes everything about the scene just feel off and its the same with when Kai was running after Halsey's ship, she just looks off.

I was literally saying the same thing "these spartans can kill elites from a distance but can't fire one bullet at each of the prophets"

A few moments of idiocy that blared out at me throughout the episode. 1) Kai removing her helmet in a hostile situation to yell at Halsey only to get whacked on the back of the head. 2) Cortana stressing the importance of John flying the Pelican ship through a gravity shredder when we later see she could’ve taken control of the Pelican herself. 3) The Covenant holy planet having ZERO defence systems. 4) Not blowing the prophets away with the remote controlled Pelican. 5) Cortana taking over John’s body to suddenly become the Terminator and the hero of the story essentially. 6) VERY bad techno babble. “Electrical systems are failing! Rerouting auxiliary power!” 7) A rather lackluster final battle. Far too brief.

That wasn't John 117. That was Shawn 6969 who tries to live up to the legend but falls short due to being emotional 24/7. EMOTIONAAL DAAAMAGE... This isn't Halo. Its Alo, a romance drama. See it from that angle and its not half bad. 🤣

The fight with the brutes felt like banging action figures together. The weight of their hammers, the brutes moving around, and Chief getting hit looked way too light or floaty. I also thought that's how silver team was going to get out, by killing or taking hostage the 3 prophets floating 20 feet above them..... But no

When the halo show showed Riz’s ribs showing after they took off her chest plate reminded me of Dante’s( is a spartan lll) death who also had his ribs exposed after Kurt(spartan ll who trained the spartan lll’s) in ghosts of onyx.

I really dislike how cheif is only cheif when he let Cortana take control… and I agree they did this show so poorly even fan made movies are better than this show

Crazy that when cortana took over the chiefs body, that’s when he started acting like the master chief lol only time in the whole show. Notice in the pelican they didn’t take his helmet off. They went the whole damn season trying to humanize him and then reverted back to how he actually acts, a robot. THE IRONY

Hopefully this is the last season. Another season of this, and the Halos need to be activated

This show has me watching the “discover hope” campaign. Hoping that they’ll fire the writers and director and salvage Halo for season two.

if I'd recommend this show to anyone. I'd tell them to just watch episode 1, 3, 5, and 9. If anything, this show had two opposing teams working on it. One team wanted to injected a bunch of woke cutting room floor ideas from Picard and shoehorn them into an already strong franchise. The other was just a bunch of keno halo fans that actually put in the effort towards the set design, references, choreography, and cinematic styling of the show. It's obvious where both teams work shined the most. It's just a huge shame that the latter team didn't have more creative control over the project. I'd give this season a good 6 out of 10. It's in the camp of "a fun casual watch" but not much more. I genuinely do hope season 2 does take the ratings seriously and fix what was clearly dragged it back from becoming something so much better.

Imagine all of the poverty, homelessness and hunger we could have fixed with all of the money that went into this show… But instead we got master cheeks.

Cortana takes over Chiefs body. But uses pelican to save the day. Why couldn’t they use the pelican earlier and have Kai carry the artifact out. Why didn’t they try shoot the prophets? This was the PERFECT moment for Cortana to come to chief when he’s down and say if we work together, we can beat them all. Chief says “you’re on” and the halo theme fades in, they take out all the covenant together whilst the pelican flies in knocking Atriox out of the way and killing the hoard of sangheili.

Also, in regards to the Prophets floating innocently, I don't even know if the UNSC knew of them, yet. No idea but based on this show, it's more likely that they just didn't think to have them do it.

Cortana controlling Chief is closer to canon MC than the actual "John" in this show

ngl I hope this is the series finale. Throw it into the garbage, make a show that is canon, respects the lore and understands that Halo is not only about Chief and his feelings... but knowing how this always goes and the fact Season 2 was already approved, they are just going to double down on this shit.

It also doesnt feel like a war, it feels like there is no threat from the covenant. They only had like one scene that showed a glassed planet. They need someone who knows and understands Halo to make a show or movie. Im just always let down by official Halo media. Because they just don't understand it and they want to Hollywoodafy the story.

I just realized something. Cortana taking over chiefs body (why…) is a plot point taken from the early seasons of RED VS BLUE. These writers are stealing plot points from RvB. A fan show from more than a decade ago.

The final battle was ment to resemble the fight in the book were blue team minus masterchief is trapped after the fall of reach with halsey an john returns from the first halo game an saves them, with kelly almost being killed like Riz in the show

Hey hidden this is an update I just finished Metal Gear rising revengance and the ending was good the boss fight with senator took me hours to do and the soundtrack for the ending and the credits music is nice thank u for recommending the game u and my friends said the games good for sword combat the soundtrack and you’s weren’t wrong. This brings a question to mind on this whole parallel universe of halo. the blessed one ( can't remember her name at this time) speaks both sanghelli and sansy'um (language of the hierarchy). Does this mean every theme song of the halo games are sansy'um ?, if so what do they mean

I saw Kai chase Dr. Halsey down the hall to stop her from getting to the escape pod, it's almost like the writers forgot right before this scene Kai literally ran like 3 times faster than those marines, she looked like the flash as she jumped onto the escaping aircraft... Now she is somehow slower than Dr. Halsey running down a flat hallway?

I hate seeing such a fantastic franchise be destroyed by people who just dont care enough to keep it genuine. This show is such a disaster in every way. Forward unto dawn and landfall easily trumped this show. None of us wanted mastercheeks! It all comes down to passion, or lack there of. They didn't play the games or consume any media because they weren't fans of it. They didn't experience the complexity of the lore because of personal interest, like us. Art isn't really considered bad to me unless you have no passion for the subject. That shows through your creation how much you care about it. I hate acting like I'm some snooty jagoff but, There's no love put into American entertainment. Everyone focuses on diversity, fancy visuals, nostalgia bait, or making a quick buck but, that all means nothing if the story lacks heart. They should've paid Xperia, Joe Staten, and all the halo youtubers to direct a halo series we deserve instead of saying screw it.

whats better is this is a series with lore that strings together. they just add a couple texts about a couple things, say some dialogue that would only make sense if you read and remembered that lore from the last game and it gets you interested. you gotta look for it, and thats easy have these moments where your brains just imagining different ways to do different things.

My hope with this show is that it will motivate some old-school halo fan with a film degree to make the live action adaptation halo truly deserves instead of this garbage

The combat in the show feels too fluid. It’s good but just too smooth in their movements. Gotta say this is the most Halo feeling episode in the show. Hearing the Halo theme while there’s a fight scene was so cool. And then when Cortana takes over Chief’s body he actually becomes Chief. Which is a bit strange but I’d take that over Jimmy Rings

The condor-Cortana thing also came directly to my mind. I was asking myself the same question and the only explanation I could somehow go with was that cortana took more like a backseat role and only reacted to direct orders other than acting on her own, because of that whole taking over your body thing. Still would be quiet stupid considering she wouldn't even bring up the option of just blowing up everything with the ship flying in a pretty save spot above all that but we have to work with what we get

The way that Adun dies was excellent. So while Kai ignores the Keystone to go after Halsey, the scene itself was pretty great, even if it was completely illogical.

The whole nihilism in media feels like a culture wide phenomenon, reminds me of the Nietzche quote, "God is dead, and we killed him." I think combating such a sense of nihilism or subversion and destruction of what is good is the greatest struggle of our time.

Fall of reach with noble team, or following a squad of odsts through the events of halo ce with chief cameos seems like such a slam dunk idk why they wouldn’t do that if they are so interested with a character driven story
