Thank God, Texas - The Town That Had To Change Its Name - This video tells the story of how and why a small area in Texas wanted to name itself "Thank God", and why instead it is named "Blessing". Yes, it is a real town in southeastern Texas, and the history of how it got its name. While I have read about this story in several places, I first heard about it on a TV program by Ray Miller called "The Eyes of Texas". This was some time in the last 1960s or early 1970s. Most sources say the name Thank God came from the joy the land owners felt when the railroad agreed to come through the area. - Travels with Phil copyrighted by Phil Konstantin -

Seems I heard about this during Texas History taught during elementary school in 1960s. "Pierce Land & Cattle" was involved, copying what some other large ranches were doing, usually to avoid the "new" land taxes being levied...

your history of blessing is right on except the selling property to the chek emergats my family was the first family in blessing we were related to the pierce by marriage yes the pierce family did donate the property to the railroad to bring the train to town and the post office is the reason for the name change my family has been in texas since 1836

Interesting story. Impressed at the level of research and fact checking coming from "a random dude on youtube"

Thanks. The research can be very interesting. I try to be as accurate as I can. This kind of thing has always interested me. My first book on American Indian history took 10 years of research before it was published. On average, I spend about two weeks working on these videos, not counting what I already knew about the subject or place. .
