Yep, as the only European manufacturer they tried hard to compete against the Japanese onslaught, but sadly they lost. Now Philips is only doing medical devices. Longing back to the times Philips and Europe in general was an important player in consumer electronics. Now it''s South Korea, Japan, China and the US..

I have never owned one of these so find this fascinating (specially the chunky cassettes!) Have only ever had VHS from day one as we didn’t have a video in our house at all before 1984 when I was 8! But I did know someone with a Betamax and to be fair those owners have had the last laugh when it comes to quality, as when old advert uploads appear on YT the picture and sound have stood the test of time on Betamax whilst VHS uploads have bad sound and dreadful drop outs on the picture in general really meaning beta ages better than VHS! Good video by the way keep up the good work!!!!

I'm a great Beta fan myself. Sony had the last laugh too, because the professional version of Beta (Betacam and later Digital Betacam) outsold all the professional versions of VHS (MII and D9 mainly) by a huge margin. So Sony made more money from Beta than anyone ever did from VHS.

Well it’s 01:36 now, but I remember that I used a belt either from a Sony SL-8000 or a Fisher VBS-7000 that worked fine. The N17XX was a VCR longplay. I don’t remember it right now... for obvious reasons Happy new year! The picture quality of the VCR longplay is actually really good!

Philips did introduce some signal processing improvements to the N1700 over the N1502, so despite a potentially worse signal to noise ratio from the video heads, the results were better.

Putting a head drum belt on can be done without removing any scews. It's fiddly to. ;-) Set the set on the left side panel, open the trapdoor, put the belt on the motor pulley, then you can put it on the drum by rotating it.

Very fiddly, but yes it can sometimes be done. It's easier to slacken off the screws though.

@@video99couk When i made the first comment, i could not remember where i get my belts. I just found it back: www.jvanschaikconsultancy.nl/snaren.html He has belts for the n1500 and n1700, good quality, but a tad expensive? Also the website : www.mfbfreaks.com/ has them to. I think there where problems with the belts for the head drum, maybe it is allready fixed.....

@@mdftrasher For a whole belt set, €18.50 doesn't seem out of the way, if postage isn't too high. Then of course there's Brexit to contend with.

What about professional versions of 1500 and 1700? Are there such?

There was a "studio" N1500 format machine, I have one, it added two channel audio and flying erase heads for insert editing. But U-matic had the lower end studio cassette format pretty much sewn up.

Ooow a nicer belt, sounds like a good company to know :-D Hmm tension, maybe wipe the felt pad with a tiny bit of metholated spirit and the smooth clutch side. My old Jvc hr 3320 has a swaying or breathing picture, i tryed all sorts belts/motors/swearing :-D and messing with the servo board too. That was years back, And since you have shown that capacitors in your equipment are a pain, maybe the ones in my jvc have problems. I have stacks of old boards for it, so one day i might recap a spare board and slap it in, then twiddle. Or it can just sit there with its coating of dust, i like the old beast and learnt from it, so it wont get dumped. Slight editing fail, large blank bit after your video and right at the end a few seconds of you holding a bit of paper and looking slightly fed up ha ha :-D. Colin you are sacked ha ha :-D joke.

@@zx8401ztv RU-vid allows the end to be trimmed off, it's processing that now, so hopefully this version can stay live without that fault after the end credits. In the mean time, I'm uploading a new video today, of something completely different! But the item in question can be seen on my end credits. What could my New Year Special be about this year?

@@video99couk Well, one of your lads has a rubber mallett in every episode, it's a hint that you will be down the pub getting hammered lol. Ok i don't know, you have too many bits of equipment to remember. Mind you, i sometimes forget what day it is :-D
