📚 Description: Today's episode is about the Ben Gibbard signature Mustang from Fender. This mustang is pretty interesting as many specs were changed. You could say it has "false advertisement" on it, because it clearly says it has a Tremolo and a Tone control... but it doesn't! Definitely make sure you read the spec sheet on this one before buying it blindly haha.

Mustang in general have their own thing going on. I bought my first Fender Mustang in 1974, brand new I only paid $265 w/HSC! With a stock Mustang you can flip the pickups out of phase, that allowed a few more usable tones.

I bought a Squire Mustang last year out of a dealer from Africa.( yeah I know that's brave considering). Only differences I see other than being orange with red race stripes on the front comfort cut is it has a standard a tunomatic hardtail bridge. Has two string trees. Also tone and volume with a chicken head knobs. Humbuckers at bridge and neck. Additionally a three way toggle below the neck. Supposedly these were only produced for Africa. But its crediting Indonesia for building it. I did look at the papers that came with it to and it had options of a classic tremolo. Not routed for a floating tremelo. Plus a rose wood feet board.

I have a guitar setup where you just use an actual tone pot for the selector switch. Turned up to 10 it is all neck. Turned down to zero is all bridge. All the positions in between give you a blend of the two pickups but more towards 10 give you more neck blended in and vise versa. It's a great setup. They call it a blend knob. Gretcsch's have them sometimes by the lower cutaway, and Rickenbacker had it too I believe when you see a 5th knob on a Rick.

I remember seeing Ben Gibbard giving a rundown of his mustang and it was interesting to hear him describe the mods, as he knew exactly what sound he wanted and had no interest in features that would change it. In fact his does not even have a pickup selector--it was wired for both pickups all the time. Edit: 11:26 Yep, that is his tone right there.

Super impressed with Ensenada facility. I got a Vintera Modified 50s Strat 2 tone sunburst and the wood is absolutely amazing. And I love how the back of the neck is satin, but the top is light gloss. It's so beautiful. Love the body. Really interesting specs. I usually steer clear of signatures, to specific. But, I guess that's the point. I love short scales. I have a 2002 CIJ Jagstang and it's my baby. Definitely have caught my hand on the phase/off sliders. Lol, comes with the territory.

Quite a thorough review. Every important point hit and properly addressed. You have a very nice, friendly, relatable delivery. And while you're humorous, you avoid excessive and annoying "cute" "happy talk" and extraneous BS banter, which is a serious fault of at least one other well known guitar shop's videos. You made the review about the instrument, not your own standup routine; so I'm now a subscriber. Well done!

The biggest surprise for me were those vibrato cavity routes. Since the “Dynamic Vibrato” is fake, I would just have expected solid wood underneath. Which means before long somebody would be putting in an actual vibrato to make it a “real” Mustang.

It's a matter of how you look at the top of the dial. If you look at it like a clock it makes sense turning forward(clockwise) is turning towards the neck. Like think of it as you're moving where 12 o'clock is in order to change pickups then it makes sense. I'm not explaining it well but it makes sense to me. I'm still not a fan of the dial instead of a blade or 3 way. Like the old PRS guitars used to come with those. I was in the market for one and my local shop got a nice used 10 top in for 1800. It was in immaculate shape and I tried to convince myself the rotary knob would be ok but I just couldn't do it. They got one of the new eriza verde se custom 2408s in a few days later and I went with it instead. I'm very glad I did. It's an incredible guitar for the money. It plays better than my lp studio, American strat and 75th anniversary mim tele all day. The fret work and neck are the best, most consistent I've ever played on ANY guitar, hands down! Anyway, I'm off topic now. If anyone reads this all, I'm sorry! Lol!

As someone who only plays 24 in. scale, I can firmly say that you can get a non-anemic sound from a short scale. Maybe different pickups would be better suited for this mustang? Now I’m interested to see how these signature pickups would sound on a 25.5 in. scale. Less anemic? Or the same?

Knowing the original price point of Mustangs, these used to be Fender's cost relief model. It lead a lot of folks to believe these were just "cheap" guitars, and to be avoided. Then a buddy of mine brought one out to where we all recorded demos - and it ROCKED. Definitely a really good studio guitar. It reproduced good Strat and Tele sounds on the cheap. That being said, I don't see that, along with it being a "signature" model, justifying the price.

@@papasmamas1 No it doesn't, how is this in any way heavy? You know most metal artists use Tube amps right? Stuff like Modded Peavey 5150's, Orange Dark Terror, Engls etc And most are using 7 string guitars now in lower tunings

Actually that rotary switch seems logical to me, you roll it forward so you're on the front pickup. Must be me 🤷‍♂️

I personally feel like they should have gone with a nitro finish since this guitar is spec'd so sparsely. Ik it's not the norm for MIM Fenders to have nitro, but they've done it for other recent signature guitars from Mexico and like I said since it's so basic it could help try to justify the $1,100 price tag. Also the intonation seems a bit off from the factory. But personally it seems almost like a $500 Classic Vibe Squier.

I'd add a tone where the input jack is and put the input on the side..but for the price n noone id never heard of... I like the wood grain, Id buy it used and cheaper if i needed a guitar over a MiM strat ...seems the best Fender guitars should be in Mexico due to leo fender

@@caiusmadison2996 never owned a fender myself, Im just in love with natural finishes. Shame they booted ash though. I seen martin is using 'urban ash' maybe they'll take it back up in the near future. I'm not too stuck on figured wood, it looks great but yeah, I wouldn't have it as a priority is all.

Man, the MIM fenders are really getting price. Yes, they’re amazing but you can buy a decent used American standard for around that price.

It’s modded to the specifications of what the player wanted. Ever think that the hard-tail was exactly what he wanted in the customization. I wouldn’t be jiving on Fender for the finished product.

$1100 for a Fender MiM guitar is ridiculous. Nothing wrong with MiM guitars, but the reason they are made down there is to reduce the cost/price.
