That JRPG Podcast #2: Chrono Cross 

Iv played it long ago on emulation. Two years ago i bought my first ps1, import CC from usa and bought CRT 29" sony trinitron. And here i am with new hobby, retro gaming.

Man I don't play this one in a long time Gonna put it on my list of games to revisit

On a 1st run I'll choose GUILE not Nikki but either way NEVER KILL Harlie untol AFTER you steal the Moon glasses off of her and always run IF you FAIL to steal it.

Chrono Cross is amazing.Not on par with Trigger,but a great ,great game. Played in my teens and loved the colorful artstyle,memorable soundtrack and dark story. The only problem for me was the focus in so many characters.For every good character like Kid,Serge,Harle,Lynx,Glenn and the Acacia dragons were great they had a dozen of silly ones. According to the producers they even cut Magus/Magil -who had a major role in Radical Dreamers to give space to them. Suikoden 2 had a better balance between multiple characters and focus in the core ones (but CC is a better game). A shame that the series ended ironically when Square and Enix merged. Chrono had potential to be as popular as Kingdom Hearts. We need a new Chrono 😢

Love the passion. I'm also a huge fan of Chrono Cross, I think partly because I also played it before Chrono Trigger. :) With the large cast of character criticism, it's not quite as black and white, because some games actually manage to flesh out a large cast while others don't. I'll give two clear examples: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance vs. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. In Path of Radiance, the supporting cast gets fleshed out in real supports, while in Radiant Dawn they don't because all you get are those little generic one-line "supports." Or Suikoden 3 vs. Suikoden 4. Suikoden 3 is so long and every character gets their time in the spotlight (as well as extra stuff like what the detective can tell you about them or the bath scenes), and you even get to see the world through multiple characters' eyes, while in Suikoden 4 they tend to just join you then that's it there's nothing else about them. So I could see someone liking certain games with large casts but not others. To put it simply, think of how much more we'd know about characters like Zoah or Leena if Chrono Cross had support conversations like most of the Fire Emblem games. Personally, I think it would've been better if they didn't make quite so many characters and instead made a few more towns/dungeons at the end, so they could exposit that late game story stuff in a different way than Lucca's wall of text. Hindsight 20/20 and all that, of course. I want to emphasize I'm still a fan of Chrono Cross and a fan of yours. I actually have more fond memories of Chrono Cross than Chrono Trigger, and I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast, because it brought back those fond memories. :)

My problem with Chrono Cross is some of the story telling is done through these big lore dumps near the end of the game. I always assumed this was because of time constraints in production. Basically, i think show don't tell is generally a good rule of thumb in any story telling.

I got a US imported PS1 just to play this cos it wasn't released in Europe. Didn't regret it, even though as a kid it cost all my savings. :p I imported a handful of other PS1 games not released in Europe... Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, FF Tactics, Rhapsody, Saga Frontier, and P2: Eternal Punishment... and while many were exellent, none matched the Chrono Cross experience. My first RPG was technically Swords & Serpents on the NES but I don't really count it as I had no idea what it was at the time and it didn't impress me at all. My 'first' RPG that actually got me into RPGs was Final Fantasy VII as there were VERY few turn-based RPGs released in the UK prior as some boardroom of men in suits looked at a graph and decided we didn't play them because the bad ones didn't sell well.

I just got out my ds lite to play this there are so many older RPGs I want to get around to playing 😮

Great podcast! Addressing the "too many characters" criticism. I personally prefer a more focused and manageable cast. While I like Suikoden alright and this game, I would prefer and play more games in the series if the character rosters were more manageable.

Best JRPG of all time.

I think the characters are probably complained about here because of the gameplay coupled with all the routes. In Suikoden, you can recruit all characters in a single playthrough. In every Fire Emblem I can think of, you can at least get the vast majority of them in a single playthrough, except for Gates Fates and Three Houses. But if someone doesn't like Chromo Cross's gameplay, it's logical for them to resent the number of characters because it requires multiple playthroughs of a battle system they don't find fun to get them all.

I have yet to play Chrono Cross. I only played like 4 or 5 hours of Trigger, so I wanna get back into it before Cross. Ya I watched even the spoilers but I doubt I will remember what was said by the time I play the game, lol

I agree Chrono Cross is a great rpg. But the prequel Chrono Trigger is superior. Great video

Always thought that Chrono Trigger is an overrated mediocrity. Never understood people who hated Cross because it somehow "ruined" Trigger. That being said, I think it's a good game, but Cross is just miles ahead in terms of literally everything. Trigger is mid in terms of gameplay, story, characters and the world building. The majority of CT fans like to say that the only good thing about Cross is music, but I honestly feel like that it's the opposite actually. I don't remember and enjoy anything from CT as much as it's amazing music. Everything else is just not that interesting to me

My fav memories were looking at PlayStation Magazine every month and looking at screen shots of this game and how incredible it looked. When i played it, it looked beautiful
