I love the whole "buried in concrete" thing. To me it shows John knew if he EVER had to return, he would need enough strength, will, and purpose to smash through all that. Pretty dope.

That man can’t make his father proud in any universe 😂

Imagine knowing your son is a dead man walking and realizing, for all your power in the criminal underworld, there is *nothing* you can do to save him from the consequences of his own actions.

THE SPEECH THAT STARTED IT ALL!!! It is undeniable that Michael Nyqvist's delivery of this speech set the tone for what was to come and was a pinnacle part of Creating the Legend of JOHN FUCKING WICK!

If he got Allstate insurance, he would’ve been protected from mayhem 😂

What I love about this scene is that Viggo is one of the few people who have seen the monster that John can be and you can see the fear in his eyes when he tells the bar story.

A 5 minute scene that started a billion dollar franchise.

Every actor in this scene seriously did such a damn good job. From telling a story about the man who singlehandedly built your empire for you through piles of bodies to the fear that is shown in the sons eyes when he is hugged, the small mannerisms when sipping the "alcohol" in the scene make it feel so real, even the advisor/lawyer dudes reactions are on point and his body language says he does not want to be there. So much about this scene comes together to make it good but holy crap the actors made it flawless.

“Well, John wasn’t exactly the bogeyman, he was the one you sent to kill the f****** bogeyman” I honest to God wasn’t sure about this movie until that line and then I was sold such a great scene!

The way he hugged his son knowing what was coming for him was as inevitable as the next sunrise. He wasn't mad at him, he was mourning for him.

He told you everything about John Wick with the call to Aurelio. Anger at the guy who hit his son instantly became anger at his son when he heard why.

Gotta say, the kid's a bit dim. First Aurelio freaks out when he sees the car, then his father beats the crap out of him about it. And he still thinks Wick is a "Fuckin' Nobody."

"I once saw him kill three men in a bar with a pencil. With...a fucking...pencil."

Usually a “This is how bad a person is” speech feels too much like a grinding info dump. Somehow Michael Nyqvist makes it sound like a terrifying omen.

“He didn’t hear a fucking word I said” ☠️🤣🤣🤣

This scene has more layers and storytelling than some films. So much told and explained you can’t go into it all at once. My favorite part is how this organization actually honored its word when John completed “an impossible task”. Shows it has a code of honor

John Wick personifies the "fuck around and find out" term.

This scene was so intense. Although a gift from his late wife, It’s almost ridiculous that the death of his dog and stolen car was the prime plot but it intensifies the magnitude of Wicks sheer ability. The delivery set the tone and carried it out through every Wick kill

This movie made "oh" one of the greatest lines in cinema. Well sir, he stole John Wick's car and killed his dog..."oh". He was the one you sent to kill the fucking Boogie Man...."oh". Followed by a close second in "What the! Did he hear a fucking word I said??"

The delivery of the “oh” is what imo really set the tone as to how insane John is

This is just a master-class of writing and acting on all counts. The casualness which Viggo lays into Iosef, like he's just a hired lackey, not his son at all. Putting his jacket back on, adjusting the cuffs. The shock on the other guy's face. And the way Viggo tells what is basically John's origin story.................... So sorry that Michael Nyqvist is no longer with us. What a talent.

This scene still gives me goosebumps every time I watch this movie. Never fails. IMO, it's truly one of the best scenes in an action movie.

This speech means A LOT more after you've seen all the movies and then go back and watch the first one.

It’s funny how in movies of this genre the assassin who works for the mob usually does not get a chance to quit the life and start over. They wouldn’t have another choice. In this case Viggo gave John the opportunity to leave, with the condition of doing one final “impossible” job, which John ended up doing anyway. A man like that is an asset. Someone that, from the perspective of a mob leader, you can never let go. But Viggo knew that there was no way in hell he could deny John Wick the opportunity to quit. He knew what John was capable of doing and was terrified of John. You can tell by how he tells the story, and how he knows his son made a grave mistake. Viggo had massive respect for John, but you can see in his eyes that he’s also freaking out big time. He knew his son was dead, and there’s nothing he could’ve done to prevent it.

Thats a good father .... he knew the danger his son was in...tried to explain it as clearly as he could... but wasnt received with seriousness and urgency.

This is how you introduce a character. Good exposition.

"John is the one you send to kill the fucking boogeyman" "Oh" Sums up how quickly he realizes

This scene is given such a power house delivery. You get the sense of just about every emotion for all parties involved. The father's sense of immediate defeat and fear, the son's naivete and arrogance and John's righteous unbridled fury. I mean..just wow. You can absolutely tell that Vigo is scared witless of John and what he can do. Not just to his son but to the entire empire he built. Hes no push over himself but he at least has enough sense to have respect and fear of John. From this point on, the entire empire John helped Vigo build is about to get absolutely wrecked.

Throughout the Wick movies we hear several character reference John Wick having killed 3 men in a bar, with a pencil. It is always related 3rd person, except here, by Viggo - "I once saw him kill 3 men in a bar, with a pencil." So he was actually there and knows it is not an exaggeration. In fact he makes reference to the stories, if anything, being watered down.

One of the best, if not best introductions to a character! That scene was, the creation to Mr Wick!

This speech is so classic! This is why Kratos and John Wick are two of my favorite characters. It doesn’t matter what you do to them they will not stop until they accomplish what they are trying to do.

The absolute disrespect Iosef had for John despite how his father spoke of him. His father who runs a very dangerous and successful group.

"You stabbed the devil in the back and forced him back into the life that he had just left. You incinerated the priest's temple. Burned it to the ground. Now he's free of the marker, what do you think he'll do?" As with this amazing scene, it is the words of others that convey what John is - death in the shape of a man. That was the genius of good writing. John never blows his own horn. He's made his rep by being the best and walking away from it.

And the Allstate mayhem guy too....perfect.

That scene is still amazing, to see the fear in his eyes as he told his son, with all his wealth, resources and power, you fucked up and I can’t save you. I wish I could never say that to my children

I love how he immediately just disowned his son like yeah you’re not with us anymore. You’re a dead man walking there’s one person on this earth you do not mess with and you messed with that person and you’ll pay the price.

3:55 - 4:18 I feel at this moment viggos son truly realized how royally fucked he was because the anger and fear behind his fathers eyes combined with his hug showed there truly was no escaping John Wick and that this was his end

This scene was marvelous, and considering he has to tell his own son who John Wick is tells me that either he never warned his colleagues to 'never target Wick', or that his son HAD been warned in subtext before but had no focus or commitment to being careful about his targets. Maybe a mixture of both.

I like to think that Viggo isn't just horrified that his son potentially has destroy his whole operation and doom them all to death. Maybe a little, at least a little part of him is genuinely upset at his son for messing with John Wick after all he did for Viggo and their 'business' before retirement.

Great monologue! No one could have delivered like he did

I love how you can see throughout the scene how scared Iosef gets seeing how terrified Viggo is of John. Really gives him the sense that he just died, and the Boogeyman was coming to get the body.

Out of everyone, Iosef was probably to closest to actually killing John Wick. Literally had him unarmed and beaten up. Had he just finished the job, we wouldn't have the sequels we had lol.

Alfie Allen really knows how to play these characters that had kissed their ass goodbye without realizing it.

I like how simple the storyline is. It's as basic as it gets for a revenge story with a great background for the characters. The action and the acting to me is what makes this series great.

I once saw John Wick sign an autograph with a pencil, a f'n pencil ✏️.

Michael Nyqvist's last sequence in this movie was amazing. He literally went through every emotion you could think of before the hand-to-hand confrontation with John Wick. Great acting.

I think we should have a prequel movie, to show how many people he had killed to get out of this life and what life was like working with Viggo

"It's not what you did son that angers me so, it's who you did it to." AMAZING (also the scene where John breaks the concrete reminds me of Bruce Willis' character doing the same in RED)

I love how Vigo approaches his son invading his personal space, making him step back, totally occupying the place where he was. That level of authority, telling him immediately 'you have no power here, so shut up and listen.' Love those details. The guy in the background having a headache listening to Vigo's retelling of John's power level. The stress he portrays when taking the smoke, understanding that Vigo forced him to stay because this was now a problem for the whole organization. They are in deep shit. Because of one man. A terrifying man. A man you dont f*ck with. Again, the details.

Got passes to an early screening of this movie. It was like a month before the release. My son and I went in not knowing anything about it at all. We left John Wick fans for life. I kept telling people for a month that they were not ready for this film.

RIP Michael. This speech was epic.

the running gag of "...oh..." any time john is brought up in a story just gives me chills every time...also its thought that you're paid in gold coins for contracts, possible 1 coin per contract. The amount of coins he has....there's maybe 30 or more coins per sleeve with 24 sleeves which would mean there's at least 720 gold coins (also each one is valued at $2-5k)

Michael Nyqvist set the tone for this film series with this monologue.

Agreed. Powerful intro to the main character. This one scene sets the stage for the rest of the movie and as it turned out, all the sequels. A few “ Flashbacks” to his earlier life would’ve enhanced the character and storyline but obviously not necessary.

Usually villains respect their opponents, but what is incredible in john wick is not only that they respect him... they fear him, you can literally hear the desperation in Vigo who is literally the boss of the entire operation, that gives the audience the idea of how dangerous John actually is before he even touch a gun

Literally the catalyst that started it at all. I love how this echoes throughout the movies. For me it’s just awesome seeing John be an unstoppable force that’s exactly what I want. To see this man overcome an impossible task to be the one that got out and laid the foundations of that very enterprise. The man you send to kill the boogeyman that’s what’s awesome about these movies 😃

Man, these movies have SO MANY awesome actors in minor or major roles. I love how the actor who plays “Mayhem” in the AllState commercials is just casually here as Viggo’s counsel (or whatever he is).

That line "He was the one you sent to kill the fuckin' boogieman". Damn!
