Hearing a keyboardist prepare for a gig, specially a seasoned one such as Jack, is always fascinating. We guitarist love to feel like rock stars, but the keyboards are usually what brings that extra oomph that get bands to the next level of awesomeness

Just goes to show the hours of (unpaid) work that goes into preparing for just 2 nights work. Step1 identify all the different keyboard sounds. Step 2 create said sounds by either programming or sampling. Step 3 practice / practice / practice.

Very helpful Jack! Joining a two guitar band with a first gig August 26th - learning a 40 song set list. Like the suggestion that sometimes the keys just need to lay out, stop trying to match a record exactly (compromises), focus on the songs that starts with keys, etc.

Jack, you're speaking my language mate, but I was pretty surprised, curious, and a little bit relieved (!) by your comment at 41.25 - "even posh keyboards' pianos, sound ballbags through big speakers..." 🤣 Love it! I've suspected this for years, and tried most of the brands! So it's frikkin' refreshing to hear someone with access to so many different keyboards, say it like it is! 😅But I'd LOVE to know, what your go-to piano sound is, if it simply HAS to be naked piano at a big gig !? Cheers mate. 🤜🤛

This was fantastic Jack. Great to see a gigging musician honestly discussing roles, tricks and hints to get through a set. That pedal show board run downs were good, but this was excellent. Your keyboard/synth sounds were incredible. Best of all I think the quote was “piano sounds like ball bags on big speakers”…..😂

I have a similar issue with playing live (guitar). I spend lots of time sorting out tones for the twiddly fillers and always come off the gig thinking well that was OK but it could have been better. However the reaction from the punters is always positive so I guess the message is whilst we strive for our version of perfection we're there to provide entertainment to those who don't care about the how much thingamy is on the twiddly desending widdly-diddlys. Great vid. Cheers

Thank you Jack! This video was so helpful and inspiring. I wish I would have heard someone of your skills say things to me earlier on in my career like “never going to win on (insert insane prog tune here)” or “compromise” when I was stressing out over really keyboard heavy tunes. So true and once you have realistic goals, it’s more fun and efficient to get on with the job. Couldn’t agree more about your take on keyboard horns. Please keep videos like these coming.

Jack this is killer! I can’t tell you how greatful I am for videos like this. I am super excited for more Get Your Rig Out! I do have two questions. You mentioned running mono verse stereo, could you do a video of when you might want to each? A pros and cons list would be awesome. Secondly, could you make more Hammond content? I have watched your old videos of it dozens of times and would love even more of em!

Also ended up going down the MainStage way many years ago as I do many covers bands and for samples, splits and song lists - It’s just so much faster than using the Nord …thanks though nice watch ….
