This is the follow-up to our ‘Boss Metal Zone vs Dan & Mick’ • That Pedal Show - Boss... .
We’re delighted to have Rabea Massaad (Dorje, Toska, Chapman Guitars, Victory Amplifiers) along as a guest for this video, firstly because he's such a wonderful human, and secondly because he's somebody who actually plays heavy styles properly… unlike Dan & Mick!
/ rabeaafro
We start by briefly comparing the standard Boss MT-2 Metal Zone to the Analog Man-modded version, before moving on to a run-through some other contemporary high-gain pedals. Bea is not really a gain pedal guy - he prefers using high-gain amps - so we’re interested to hear what he thinks about these. Plus - how good does Dan’s Tele sound as a metal guitar? You might be surprised!
The pedals today are:
• Boss MT-2 Metal Zone www.bossus.com/products/mt-2/
UK & Europe: bit.ly/35iLgCF
USA: bit.ly/3xrdbiS
• Analog Man Pro Mod Boss MT-2 Metal Zone

• Amptweaker Tight Metal Pro - No longer made, links to latest version

USA: bit.ly/337KsV0
Bea also uses the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man 1100-TT right at the end.
Amps today are a Mesa Lonestar (100-watt mode, clean channel) and a Hamstead Artist 20, running together.
Interesting bits and go-to sections…
• Rabea’s signature ML-3 BEA FR: 1:47
• Clean sound from the amps: 2:50

• Analog Man / Boss MT-2 Metal Zone Pro Mod: 5:52

• EQ for band playing and home with heavy tones?: 26:18
• Bea plays us out: 29:33
Rabea is playing his Chapman Guitars ML-3 BEA, Dan is playing a Fender Custom Shop 1963 Telecaster.

+David Mazanec Mick here. Bea may answer separately David. Shouldn't affect tone to any great perceivable degree. It may affect feel however... If there wasn't a locking nut. The further the string travels in total, the more you have to stretch it for a given rise in pitch. Usher in the whole Jimi/Strat debate and perceived effects on string tension. Notice I said 'perceived effects'. But, without the locking nut they definitely feel different which may have some kind of subsconscious knock on to how you play, and therefore the sound of what you play. I expect this will be a long thread....

Noticed thats true with quite a few Boss pedals, another notable example is the Boss 7-band EQ pedal. It too can have everything else effectively turned off and just have the Level (volume) turned up for a clean boost.

Something kind of interesting: I found an interesting how to use a Metal Zone on a Sweetwater review for the pedal, of all places. I followed those instructions, and came back to this video out of curiosity, and it is interesting how closely the settings I ended up with mimic what is on the board here. The set up is worth noting though (as opposed to just copying what is here) because it allows you to adjust for your particular rig. Credit to "Tony" from Sweetwater: "Start by placing all controls at the 12 o'clock position, which should be more or less neutral eq-wise, the inherent tone of the pedal not withstanding. Now turn the mid control all the way up(stay with me here) - now slowly sweep the mid-frequency control all around and find that awful, nasally annoying frequency... you'll know it when you hear it, and it will be different for your guitar than mine, so one setting does not fit all. Now that you have found that nasty tone, turn the mid control down to scoop it out. You are NOT scooping ALL the mids, just a certain frequency range that is unpleasant to the ears. Now adjust level, bass, treble & gain to taste."

I've been meaning to comment on this video since the day it was posted. I hope a lot of Guitar Center Heroes watch this video and learn something about setting a superior, more sophisticated sound instead of wanking away with the scoop of the month. I play more classic rock, but I really appreciated Rabea's focus and knowledge of his chosen musical genre, and his attention to detail in sculpting his guitar's voicing; adding clarity and dynamics in the stead of all out gain and scoop. Well Done! Love the show!

Great comment Curtis. I totally agree! Being a blues-rock player, rarely would I think metal players would have much concern about tone. Obviously, there are a few who "get it." After seeing this, I am now an even bigger fan of Rabea, a very talented, gifted and seemingly all-around great guy! And, it goes without saying that Dan and Mick are of that same merit... Happy Trails !!
@MellonVegan
@MellonVegan 7 лет назад
To be fair, though, the modern metal community seems to be very focussed on tone, getting it not only to sound heavy but also to be clear and the notes of chords to be distinguishable. Though, to be fair also, I mostly hear from people who play heavily down-tuned genres. If you don't dial those tones in correctly you're gonna have a bad time. :D
@Yupppi
@Yupppi 7 лет назад
I hope they don't watch this though, the eq settings are set horribly. Full of that bassy mush that makes all the riffs sloppy. I listened to this with studio headphones that usually lack a lot of bass but this video was just full on filled with bass. The telly sounded way better because the eqs were set silly. But I sense a bit of elitism with "superior" tones and "wankers" so I'll leave it :)

thought: when I was young, I cranked way more bass into my tone in my bedroom, simply to reproduce the sound I heard on albums. I failed to realize that I was attempting to replace bass guitar tones with my rhythm guitar work. later when I played live and/or with a band, those same tones don't translate at all, and midrange eq became essential, as stated in this video.

Finally been experimenting with the Boneshaker, and Mick and everyone, this pedal is fantastic with all the gain down, eq’s at noon and the level about 1 o’clock with a neck single coil, great big cleans to subtle blues crunch. I was not expecting that, and think ill use this for all “clean blues”, I.AM.AMAZED! Great show idea, using pedals not how they were intended but still useful! Cheers!
@hashdealer8822
@hashdealer8822 6 лет назад
I think the Boneshaker is aimed more at the doom/sludge metal realm. It got kind of a fuzzy quality to it, though if you dial the gain back you can get some tighter sounds out of it. Great pedal for sure, the parametric eq is awesome.

Rabea is clearly a knowledgeable person in addition to being a great player and until watching this, I've heard people talk about distinctions in metal tone but I've never really heard them. His explanation and playing really really highlighted some very important aspects that honestly, apply to many styles across the board - it's all about getting a sound that works for what you're doing. Love this show! Learn so much every week! Could you do a video about guitarsond in synht-heavy pop music? I feel like the definition of good guitar tone = good blues or rock tone. I love that, but my experience is that that same tone dont work at all if keyboards are the maine part of the soundscape. You talk about it in videos like this, with the mids and amount of gain and stuff, and that is very interesting. I think a video about for exaple Coldplay and the guys from Katy Perrys band would be really informative! You should check out some live clips from the norwegian pop queen Gabrielle, she has a great guitarplayer in her band :)

I love Dan's reactions to hearing a sweet riff or lick, this vid or any TPS vids. Love it!

I actually think that analog metal zone sounded pretty good. Don't know how it would be at high volume, but it wasn't bad. Can't believe I'm saying this!

Daniel, another great show! Hope Mick is on the mend from last week. I'm not a metal guy myself but I was glued to the screen! Regardless of the weekly topic your show ALWAYS contains so much knowledge. I find myself trying new things with my amp and pedals every week from your conversations here. That Pedal Show has been my regular Friday ritual since the second episode... keep up the GREAT work!! Also, Rabea was a perfect guest. A great player with loads of personality! AWESOME!!

I suspect he has always had some love for the Tele, considering he put a reversed Tele headstock on his signature guitar...

Really great video. Finally, a fair review of the MT2. You confirmed what I have always believed about the pedal single coil is best with it. Those Amptweakers though, LEGIT. Thanks guys. Really good fun.

Dime had an EQ pedal boosting mids. So to achieve an OK-ish tone on the metalzone, I don't scoop the mids on it. And Cut the mids a bit on the amp instead. Just a bit, not too much
@thomasrevill7723
@thomasrevill7723 6 лет назад
I believe Dime's pickups also interacted in a way that boosted his mids without any amp involvement, though that is secondhand knowledge so take it as you will.
