In this video Daniel and Mick discuss Boost pedals. We have four kinds to hear: a treble boost, a dirty boost, a ‘clean’ boost and a mid boost. How do they react with clean and dirty amps? How do they react with another overdrive pedal? We’re here to find out…
The pedals we’re using today:
Keeley Java Boost - no longer made
Green Carrot Pedals Dirty Radish
www.greencarrot...
Xotic RC-Booster (Scott Henderson model) - no longer made, try version 2 in the links

With all the knowledge these guys have, I would love to see them focus on a Vox AC-15, or AC-30 and give us what they think would be the best pedals for the amp. Then move on to Fender amps, Marshall etc....

Thanks That Pedal Show! I've built my pedal board today and as you know it can be an expensive thing to do if you have to buy some pedals and the board, power supply etc. But it has to be done if you're playing live. I had some pedals and bought a couple extra, but thanks to your show I've put it together in the order that you suggest for the front end and sent delay and trem to the effects loop. It sounds awesome and without your advice and suggestions I would not have got this result or known how to go about it in the way I did. Keep doing what you do it's interesting and useful.

Thanks Mick and Dan..Loved tumnus>reverb>super reverb at 29.47. Very pleased to hear that mild overdrive/boost whilst retaining the character and sound of the strat and SR. I can hear it, but i can't explain it like you guys do, in term of mid pushed, mid humped, and mid scooped. It seems that a mid scooped amp responds nicely to a mildly accentuated mid range boost. I've given up trying to change what the SR is, but happy to finally find something that will work with it. The soul driven worked nicely also. Compliments also to your guitar playing. cheers
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 6 лет назад
Thank you. The Super Reverb is a tweaky beast, especially the reissues where that bright switch can be so ugly... but in common with many Blackface Fender amps, a little mid push can be a wonderful thing. Similarly, the Tube Screamer with its mid push and top end roll off can be the perfect foil for the Super and bright switch. ‘Tis all a balancing act. Glad you found this useful!

I've got to say that the "That Pedal Show" is not only great fun but very informative. I have learned so much from it. By the way congrats to the Gigrig team who have just built me a pedal board to die for and my choice of pedals was very much inspired by this show. The G2 is a fabulous piece of kit, (thank you Dan) it's so easy to use and does so much more than I had envisaged or even imagined. The ability to move one pedal in every preset to another position in the chain without having to physically rewire it is a magical discovery and a godsend and the soft noiseless foot switches are terrific. The quality of the build of my pedal board is first rate (well done Joe and Jake). It's the envy of so many. Thank you guys. The wet and dry amp set up is also a real quantum leap in terms of my tone and is inspiring my playing. So I am indebted, and please keep the show going.........Rest assured I shall be ordering a "That Pedal Show" T-Shirt and beanie to aid the cause. I can't thank you enough, Ian

Hey Dan & Mick - Greg here, love the vids. I've learned a bunch. been watching for 6 months now and binge. i recently bought a DigiTech Whammy II and am having issues with my fuzz pedals when it's in the chain. my signal path is as follows: 1981 Ibanez Blazer/2011 Gibson SG 60s Tribute > tc polytune 2 > Digitech Whammy II > Carl Martin The Fuzz > Electro Harmonix Big Muff Wicker > Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl MKII > Demeter Stereo Tremulator > Skreddy Echo > Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 2x12 combo. And suggestions/recommendations (or video, fingers crossed!) would be very much appreciated. Thank you and thank you for all that you dudes do.

Some majestic tones, gentleman. I will use a boost to punch out of a mix for a solo but often get told its too loud - subtlety is not really my strong point. When dialling in a boost pedal is there a sweet spot that is commonly found that pushes the sound over the top but without drowning out the dynamics? Actually, would you do a video on how you dial in pedals - would be great to learn what you are listening out for when you set up a rig.

Loving your work guys. Can you do a video on volume? I.e. controlling your volume on stage. Either when you realize the band has got a lot louder and you can't be heard any more, or you realise you are too loud, or you just want to play loud and soft. Do you use the guitar volume pot, which to me is more of a tone knob? Do use a volume pedal, which to me is more for swells? Do you go to the amp (if you can get past the horn section and the percussionist on a small stage) Do you rely on the sound guy? Do you grin and bear it? What are the solutions? Thanks a lot!

Ok...since you guys have made me addicted to pedals and broken my Multi-Effect curiosity. I have a Tele and a Strat with a JB in the bridge and a Blackstar Artist 15. I only have the Hall of Fame currently but want to go with: Tuner -> EP Booster -> EHX Glove -> Electric Mistress -> Flashback Delay -> Hall Of Fame Reverb...would the EP Booster and Glove work well with the Blackstar Artist 15 using the "Drive" Channel Gain turned 3/4 up?

Worth a nod to using boost before "mixed" overdrives. It can sound a bit off if using in a truly clean amp. I use a mid-humped boost to shape tone in front of a modded (less mid-dy) SD1.. the non-compressed sound that bleeds through when the overdrive is on can be louder than the compressed sound if using lots of gain on the pedal and the boost together.

Thanks for another great show. My stream-of-consciousness bullet list: 1 - I love the sound of Mick's Collings (his Strat is pretty sweet-sounding as well). 2 - I LOVE it when Daniel goes into "shred mode". 3 - I LOVE the Platonic method premise with Daniel as Socrates and Mick as Phaedrus (or is it vice versa?). 4 - This is still the only show I feel reveals the tones of the various pedals in a subtle and significant way - kudos for your studio/engineering (slash-musicianship). 5 - The format is really the perfect platform from which to show off the gigrig - incredible. 6 - This is pretty much my favorite show, and is yet one more reason I look forward to Friday.

I've been using a screamer into a Timmy for a while now and it is a really nice sound. Use the timmy from anywhere from saturated clean to light overdrive (depending on pick attack and pickup selection) and then use the screamer to push it and push the mids a bit to get a stronger overdrive sound for when I need it. There is just something about using a screamer/klone (something with some added mids) into another overdrive. Tumnus -> Carpe Diem -> super reverb towards the end was probably my personal favorite of the combinations shown.
@ThatPedalShow

@intrsoul

What I want to see is an Xotic EP with 3 or 4 user presets. Why? I use a variety of guitars/pickups and I use the EP to curtail the input for each guitar. For instance, a Duncan JB has the EP on, with gain all the way down. For vintage Strat pickups, the EP is set to noon, and so on. I've seen pros use programmable EQ's to do the same for touring artists (Joe Perry), but it makes more sense to me to leave your boost on all the time and switch between gain settings. Ideas?

Hi Mick. Not certain if you are still monitoring the comments in this video or not. But-- I just picked up a Suhr Koko Boosted Reloaded. I find the mid-boost section adds a great mid bump [go figure] to any OD pedal. Provides a great tone to my Strat into a black-face Fender amp. But, because you can control the amount of mid boost, every pedal does not necessarily sound like a tube screamer. Not certain if you've ever given one a try or not.

@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 лет назад
+Adam Narrell yep, great idea Adam ;)
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 лет назад
+Adam Narrell Hey Adam, Mick here. It might work for a show... I've been playing Strats my whole life. The biggest hum exacerbaters are lights and screens. There are other things too, but those are the ones you encounter as a guitar player the most. You just learn to deal with it by physical position and using your volume control when you're not playing. In my opinion - and I'll just be clear that this is my own personal opinion - any physical or electronic intervention to get rid of the noise (noiseless pickups, noise gates etc) makes the guitar/amp/pedals sound less good to me. The other essential element is having your power/isolation really well sorted on your board, so that you're adding no more noise than you absolutely have to. For the show, we sit there under lights and in close proximity to the amps. The single coils do hum, but we manage it with the volume pot on the guitar and physical position. If we can get a show out of that, we'll do it! Thanks for watching!

In your opinion, what would be the best boost pedal (for soloing purposes) to use with a multi-effect unit with amp modeling? I am inclined to think that the treble boost and the clean boost would be the best choices

Brilliant video guys. I'm having myself a bit of a problem with finding a pedal that can drive a bb preamp into super saturated solo mode. I'm running a '72 Marshall Super Bass running fairly clean. What would you suggest?

Really enjoying your shows! in Incredibly helpful! I think it would be really interesting to compare multieffect digital modelling technology with the original to see just how far technology has come or whether you still can't beat the real deal.... anyways keep up the great work!

Screw you guys! I already have a huge pedal shopping list (2000€+) and every time I watch one of your videos I find more pedals I want! That Carpe Diem is a pricey SoB! In all seriousness, guys, this channel is great, I'm learning heaps and really enjoying the show, keep it up!

O there is tons of toilet humor in Sweden! And with that being said I have the ultimate challenge for you gentlemen. Mick once said in one of the old videos that you generally hear modern bar and restaurant entertainers playing a guitar directly into a mixing board with some sort of synthesized device. I do not do this, but I am a person that runs a full pedal board into a mixing table and it is fantastic. I have created my pedal board as if I will be playing into a super reverb and a lot of my petals are placed together with this in mind. I will be eagerly waiting for you to create a pedal board that sounds fantastic plugged into a mixing board. You guys have the ability to make such a grueling task sound awesome. I love the show and it gives me so much information every week and it answers all the questions I've had since I was a smelly little kid in a bedroom with a terrible peavey guitar.

Look forward to your show every Friday! I have a 78 JMP 50 watt head with pre 73 cab with 4 rola/greenbacks. Looking to simplify with pedals. Full tone deluxe wah-java boost-full tone octafuzz-Evh phase 90-72 Echoplex ep-3. Considering germanium pedals should I be considering Gigrig quartermaster for isolating pedals? Thanks!

+Bruce Wayne I had the same amp Bruce, 76' lady of the great non master volumes. a QM does help tidy things up and take unwanted pedals out of the signal path but the most important thing to isolate us the power, specially with germanium pedals. Cheers Wayne ;)

Question :) should I get a booster pedal, or should I buy another JCM2000 and run two through my stereo cab and have one for clean and rhythm and one for just solo's ?

Booster will be much cheaper but jcm2000 will offer huge spectrum of tones

What a great episode guys! Best moment for me: @ 25:17 - Mick :- "What's that?!" Dan :- "That's the 2 amps together.." Mick:- "That's a KILLER sound!" Dan:- "Well now let's put a booster into that!" Mick:- "What a CRACKING sound!!" Couldn't agree more! Best tone of the episode for me :))

Despite hours of RU-vid videos and internet searching, maybe I'm just dumb but, I still don't know if I can get my amp (1950s Harmophone[ original Magnatone rebranded for a now defunct suitcase organ company]) to break up at reasonable, non-painful levels. The amp has an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING overdriven sound, but It takes the paint off the walls to do so. I put my dirt pedals into it and it sounds great, but I'm curious if I can get its OWN sound, because quite frankly I never get to hear it as there's never a situation to play THAT loud for me. Nor is it pleasant or comfortable to do so. I realize I could just buy one and try it out, but I'm really poor so I'm trying to figure out if/what is even possible to do. Any ideas welcome. I've heard I could somehow wire a master volume between the speaker and the amp, but that's not something I've yet tried. Slainte.

Se Sa Try out an attenuator! Boss Waza tube amp expander, or some cheaper options too. It won’t be quite the same, but should be very close to the same sound at lower volumes
@sesa1076
@sesa1076 4 года назад
Thanks for the reply man! I appreciate it a lot. From my understanding those attenuators run through the effects loop right? This old beast has no such thing. That's part of the trouble.

I have been thinking I need to hardware something in. I was originally thinking of putting a master volume there, cranking the amp and turning that down, but not sure how well it will work. Yeah, it's a really cool amp. Magnatone 213 rebranded Harmophone for a Now defunct organ company. They made suitcase organs and stuff. Here's a link to the exact model if you're curious. I appreciate the help. I've asked all over in different forums and got nothing. I had assumed all those attenuation devices worked through an effects loop. So that was very helpful. : reverb.com/item/10252590-harmophone-magnatone-super-130-custom-high-fidelity-213-troubador-with-pitch-shift-vibrato-1950-s-br

Hello again guys, still loving the show. So, with something like the TC Spark Booster with its EQ controls, gain control & fat/mid options etc, can you cover a lot of the ground of the different boost types?
@AdamDavidOfficial

i have literally been watching your vids back to back all day haha loving your patient and very thorough demos/experiments! i do have a question. im playing a custom shop strat into a hot rod deluxe with a v30 speaker in it. i mostly play with tubescreamers and i have like 4 different ones. my go to is the ts808 handwired. i have been exploring stacking 2 because i feel like i need a boost at times when the band is picking up dynamically or for solos/etc.. it doesnt seem to do the trick. just very noisey. i feel like there could be a more efficient way to accomplish the sound im aiming for. i was considering using a klone (tumnus or archer) or clean boost after the ts808hw. or vice versa? and maybe even adding a compressor in the mix? hoping for some advice ha. lost in sound atm!

Swapping my Boss sd1 for a clean boost (Earthquaker Devices Arrows) was the best thing I did for my sound. It's an awesome tool for making high gain stuff sound a lot better.

Hey guys great video! I've been messing around with building my own pedals for a little over a year now. What do you guys think about doing a video on diy pedals?
@HermelJaworski
@HermelJaworski 8 лет назад
Great video guys ! So, to sum up, what I need is an EQ with headroom, rather than a special boost. Because all what those boosts do is boosting certain frequencies. I am right?
@mattsnyder4754
@mattsnyder4754 8 лет назад
That's one way to do it, yes. It'll be a lot harder to dial in, and the frequencies on the EQ may not exactly reflect what the boosters are doing, but it should work a bit.
@HermelJaworski
@HermelJaworski 8 лет назад
Thanks Matt for your answer, I was kinda expecting an EQ to be harder to dial in and less plug 'n play that a booster with one or two knobs.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 лет назад
+Hermel J. As Matt says, you can do it that way. But certain boosters have a very specific tone/effect on the whole rig. For example a germanium treble booster will sound very different from an op-amp type booster. Try them, it's fascinating!

+That Pedal Show Hey Chaps, how's it going? So boost based question. Are boosts inherently noisy or is it the boost I've got? I using DOD FET410 into the middle mode dirty channel on my JVM205 to fatten up the tone, push the front end so I can roll of the gain to keep definition and stop it getting flubby. Obviously that isn't too much of a problem when I'm running full tilt, but I also like to roll off the volume on the guitar and use my split pick up (BKP Holydiver), for my 'clean' tone and this is where the problem is, the boost is so noisy! It's running off an isolated power supply (Gigrig Isolator/distributor/generator combo) and it seems to get quieter when I touch it (which can't be good). So my question is, would I have a similar noise issue when I roll off the volume if I got say, the RC SH Booster (which I love), or, if guilt get's the better of me, say a TC Electronic Spark booster??? Be good to hear your thoughts.

Hey guys, humble suggestion... Creation Audio Labs "MK 4.23". Easily the most transparent boost I've ever heard. Sadly, not a very well known boost.
