PLEASE HELP. I'm looking for a valve amp that is a good home and practice amp and a small gig amp. Looking at like a blues jr, bassbreaker 15 or something in that category. I'm gonna use pedals with it so mainly looking at for an amp that's really clean sounding and distortion and everything else my pedals will take care of. Any advice? Thanks!
Have you guys tried getting Steven Wilson on the show? I remember seeing the rig rundown you did for him a year or two ago, but I think it would be cool to bring him in to talk in depth about his approach to effects, tones, and things of the like.
That Pedal Show My timing is impeccable then! Any chance he's bringing his Bad Cat in with his board and guitar? I love the tones he gets from it and would like to see it up against something like the Marshall or the V40 Deluxe, and I really love its ability to blend the clean signal in with the overdrive for more clarity.
The King Fuzz sounded ace! I know the left side was supposed to be an overdrive but to me it was getting that spitty fuzz tone. Not your typical overdrive. I'm not saying it is a bad thing because I do love me some fuzz.
And away goes my productivity for the afternoon. I've been binge watching TPS for a few days now. You guys are the perfect mixture of technicality/nerdiness and musicality. I wanna be Dan and Mick when I grow up :p Cheers from France, again :)
Can't say it enough...LOVE this show!!! And please please PLEASE!! You need to get Brian Wampler on here! It would be amazing! He's such an awesome and knowledgeable guy just like you two :) Can't believe you guys haven't employed him by now... Dan: I want and new fuzz pedal with clarity and rich harmonics...get on it Brian. Mick: Yeah, make it happen Wampler! Brian: One Dan-ish Fuzz pedal coming right up fresh and hot off the bread board! Hahahahaha It'd be like your own personal pedal maker :)
+Hulk Slayer We would love to have Brian on. If we're ever there, or he's here it will happen. He's 3,947 miles away, North Atlantic Ocean included. Cheers!
Hulk Slayer why cant you be satisfied with the great show and appeciate this dynamic Duo, instead of decrying them. . If you like wampler just log onto his chanel. If you want a burger go to McDonaulds.
Stephen Fell who said I'm NOT satisfied with the show as it is? Pretty sure I DID show my appreciation of them in the beginning of my comment and I do t believe I've ever "decryed" anyone in my life Lol I DO like Wampler. I DO watch his channel. I DO want a hamburger and I WILL go to McDonald's and get one :) Hey Stephen, why are you judging my opinion with your own opinions? Hey Stephen, why are you commenting on my comment? Hey Stephen.... do you want a hamburger? Do you Stephen? lol Hey Stephen, why are you so against suggestions? Dan and Mick welcome our suggestions all the time and have asked for them before. Why are you decrying their wishes for us to make suggestions Stephen? Huh? What's up wit dat Stephen? Hey Stephen.... I have a cousin with a similar name... his name is Steven. I said "similar" Stephen, not exactly the same. How do you pronounce your name Stephen? Is it like Steffen? Steven? Stef-On? Can I call you Steve-O? Is that cool? Huh buddy?
Stephen Fell so.... you don't like it when they have guests on? You prefer the shows when it's just the two of them? I think those are some of my favorite ones too... but I still enjoy when they have guests on. I'm sad to hear you don't watch those episodes cause you think it should just be the two of them...Steve-O. Steve-O-reno ;) Your name is fun to say. Mick thinks the same thing about Brian's last name lol oops, I mentioned him again...sorry Stevie-Peavey. It won't happen again, I promise. I'm going to agree with you because you're so insightful. I myself could never have figured out that their reply to not having him on was because they knew his pedals better than him.... I thought it had to do with logistics. Thanks Stephen for cueing me in ;) In my defense, the numbers threw me off lol
It's funny to me that Larry Carlton has become so known for using a 100W Dumble, when his arguably most famous solos on "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" was a 20W '50s tweed Fender Deluxe :D But then again, a tweed Deluxe seems like a more appropriate studio amp, than the Dumble. So maybe the Dumble is just his preference for live work? Has Mick ever had the chance to discuss this with Larry Carlton? :)
+Magnus Guldbrandsen Hey Magnus. Yeah, a couple of times. Larry is a lovely guy and I've had the great pleasure of interviewing a couple times over the years. I guess we're all on a progression. He used Boogies for a long time too... then when he found the Dumble he said the same thing they all seem to say. Paraphrasing, but the sustain, the clarity... essentially (and I'm really paraphrasing now) all those guys seem to say that their Dumbles help them sound most like themselves. Which is a paradox because here we all are assuming the sound is in the amp... and of course it's not. It's only a sound when you have something to say. Then the amp gives you the voice to say it. Sorry for the philosophical thoughts but I've been mulling this for a while now and I think I finally understand it. The tone isn't in the fingers and it's not in the gear. It's in what you're saying... enabled by both! :0)
If a an amp is played, but no one hears it - was there in actual fact a sound? Phew, all that philosophical pondering... Time for a pint, me thinks ;) In all seriousness, thank you for the detailed reply. Both your written and audiovisual infotainment (God, that is a horrible word) are always highly intersting. Thank you for sharing! :)
I was waiting for the Reveal into the Fat Larry but it never materialised! Pretty sure that would work nicely. Great show as always gents, definitely liking the random selection of Pick'n'Mix!
Pick'n'Mix is a great format, nice to explore what's new on the market without confining to a specific 'genre' of pedal :-) That said though, the best sound in this episode...that white Duesenberg through the gainy V40 Deluxe!! Unbelievable!
Guys I realize this is off topic, not about pedals, but any thought to doing a short show on demonstrating some of the bluesy licks you play? Pedals only sound their best when you put something really great into them !
+Gary Poland Hi Gary - we agree 100 per cent about the context and playing bit. Dan is a superb guitar teacher as I found out when we went to Italy with Guitar Breaks earlier this year. I'm the opposite unfortunately because I have no idea what I'm doing. However... we did talk about the possibility of some tuition. If we can ever get the regular shows running smoothly, it might happen as an extra. At the mo, it's struggle enough to get the main stuff out. Thanks for watching!
+ClamLeaf Grahame We have one.... so yeah, that would be cool. It'll be a few weeks out as we filmed some stuff ahead so we could have some holiday/vacation time. Thanks for watching!
Can we please make it compulsory that each future Pick'n'Mix episode ends with everything turned on at once? Found myself waiting for it in vain at the end.
I'm really enjoying Dan'n'Mick's Pick'n'Mix. You should do a full show on Free The Tone pedals, because I've never heard of them and it looks like they're doing great stuff. Oh and that Kingfuzz deserves it's name :D
I love how well the md-500 emulates the boss ce-1 circuit. I've been waiting for so long for you guys to get this pedal on the show. The best feature by far is the ability to program where you want your modulation in reference to your drive per preset. Revolutionary.
Actually really like the way the King Fuzz sounds at 10:40 with 'too much input', it drops a ton of the attack, makes it feel like sidechained compression. Neat.
This show is fantastic. I'm not into fuzz pedals because I like clean over drives and heavy distortions that are clean as well. But this King Fuzz has made me a believer!
don't mind the "Pick N Mix," however I think it could be more fun. Maybe you could put all the potential pedals in a bag and pull them out at random. Let us follow you figuring out how to get it to work, etc.
That Pedal Show Sounds good to me mate! I'm ready when you guys are :) Just re-watching yesterday's episode to pass the time on the Glasgow to Newcastle drive for tonight's show; that King Fuzz is something else!
Nice video! +/- 20% is usually my tempo too. The Flight Time sounds awesome, love that level of control all on the panel. But man if that's the improved preset switching, how long did the old take? Did you have to press a button 23 times for preset 23? Also, what's a corker and what's a doffer?
That was over too soon! Enjoyable format. Great just listening to you both noodle about while exploring different sounds along the way with each pedal in the pick and mix. I have a suggestion moving forward for the general format of the channel / content. I'd try something like alternating between a show like this pick and mix (an overview of a few different pedals, maybe add in a BRIEF news section, audience question section, plug your merch) and another where you get as detailed and analytical and nerdy as possible, share your deepest insights. That way you'd be catering to total noobies, and your most hardcore and now educated audience of guitar players and pedal aficionados. Week 1: Pick and mix. A show with a few brief segments that are regular every week and begin to build that sense of continuity / branding etc. Run through 3 or 4 pedals. Week 2: That pedal show pros *working title*. You can unabashedly geek out over whatever is taking your fancy in the world of guitar pedals. More joey landreth please 👍 let your personalities shine through, because honestly that's a huge draw to these videos is watching two nice humble guys in front of a camera sharing knowledge to help people be creative. I love this show! Cheers fellas
+Alex Flannagan Thanks for the suggestions Alex - some great stuff in there! We had talked about doing the newsy thing for sure. Hopefully as we continue to grow we'll get the point where more shows are possible. I LOVE the idea of a weekly news show. (Mick here). Thanks for watching and for the suggestions!
Suggestion for a video. Try the different speakers threw a HotRod deluxe and see which is the better combo. WGS 12C, WGS REAPER, REAPER 2, WGS ETS 65 AND Celestion Vintage 30. More mod videos!
With the MD-500. Can you create one bank using 2 different banks. So in turn creating bank A&B into just one preset? This way you could create several multi-effect presets for extra stacking versatility. Or does it not allow you to save sounds that are stacked?
Congrats on the much improved sound quality! And the lighting is better too! Appreciate the tweaking and tuning... but then that is expected from pedal fans.
I think the Pick'n' Mix format is good, but I don't think I would prefer it to overshadow your more traditional format. Maybe do Pick'n' Mix once a month?
Both of you have made the statement: If given the choice I would have 4+ gain pedals on my pedalboard. How about a show that showcases gain pedals that are very sensitive to the volume knob to achieve a range of distinctive tones.
DAN through the victory you had it nailed when you dont need to introduce that cheap british distorted distortion. It even amazed you! speak your mind? your not Andertons having to sell them.
Hey guys. Just seen the title of an Andertons upload. Can you get yourselves an epic deal on a DSL40C please to give it the 'getting the best out of' treatment?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. You mentioned the MD-500's ability to do two mods at once and I believe at least alluded to the fact that it's the first of these types of pedals (going back to the Line 6) that does that. Doesn't the Keeley Super Mod Workstation allow two mods at once? If so, perhaps you could add IT to the mix if you're comparing the Boss and Strymon. You guys are awesome... thanks for everything you do!
+Gary Stackhouse Yss, good shout Gary. The MOD workstation is a great choice if you're after basic, easily editable sounds. The Strymon and the Boss go way further with editability however. We should do the Keeley mods whatever - great pedals!
Thanks guys for your fun and insightful approach to pedal sound-scapes.. Truly an entertaining watch with you two and it's enlightened me to no end. Keep it up please :)
I personally love the pick n mix format chaps. It's a nice bit of variety in amongst the more focused episodes and the guest shows! It's a nice way to get a glimpse of some interesting new pedals too! Great stuff.
A-B'd the Fat Larry with your episode with Kingsley "Dumbly" Pre/OD. Kingsley somehow more organic or natural sounding in the headphones. Hey, theres an episode. Mumbly Dumbly Drives. ;)
+That Pedal Show, I like the format to keep up with new cool gear. Not as cool as your other informative videos, but I dig it. I would love to hear your opinions on cab sims! Two Notes Torpedo CAB, DSM OmniCabSim, Neunaber Iconoclast, BluGuitar BluBox, possibly compared to a cheaper alternative.
+apeekaboo They're all brilliant tools, is our opinion. In the right hands they can sound absolutely indistinguishable from the 'real' thing once mixed and mastered in a track... and maybe even before that. In the room though a cab, not so much. Really all down to what you have to say and the artistry/skill in using them. Erm, like all gear. Cheers!
Thanks for the info gents. I am in the market for a delay and have been looking at the TL, ElCap and DD500. But, I've had 2 people recommend the Flight Time. I'd not heard of it. With great respect and thanks...the FT does look complicated, but the killer for me is that is seems clumsy. In my opinion, some controls are better suited for "sub-menus." Sounds great though. Again, thanks.
Would you guys ever do a video comparing the G2, ES-5 and ES-8 or any other switcher. I'm looking to buy one and the G2 looks amazing but are any of the other alternatives as good. Great vid today, keep them coming.
+Sam Harrison Highly unlikely Sam. Dan owns TheGigRig, he started the compact pedal loop switcher thing and it's his livelihood. He wouldn't put out a product that he didn't believe was absolutely the best, and we both believe it to be so. Cheers!
I like Pick'n'Mix! Maybe you could do Pick'n'Mix videos dedicated to different pedal types! (Instead of going from overdrive to chorus and straight to delay, which is a tiny bit strange to me) For instance, you could do a video on the delay pedals you haven't touched on yet (such as Caroline Kilobyte, Walrus Bellwether, Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude and etc!) Maybe even do a dedicated video to different delay types (Digital, analog, lo-fi...) and so on! Just play around with them and tell us what you like about them :-)
Strange question, I would imagine, as it is not pedal-related (or is it...). What is that black thing on the headstock of your Tele? Is it just a clip-on tuner or something more nefarious?
Any chance you could do a general show on matching pickups with pedals? For example, i have suhr doug aldrich humbuckers and would be curious to know if certain pickups favored certain pedals.
+Jon Galiardi Tough one that, Jon, because it's all a matter of taste (and EQ and gain stage/compression/dynamics) and of course the amp! So it really depends on what you're looking to achieve and indeed your amp - the same pedals can sound radically different through different amps. Thanks for watching!
To answer the question posed, I enjoy the PickNMix format as a nice little change once and a while. It's a nice change and in reality, there wouldn't be enough weeks in the year to keep up with new and interesting pedals if all the shows were straight theme-only formats. So yeah, great show and every now and then thrown in a PickNMix!
I know you two enjoy the amps. But how about showing Thomas B "Bluguitar" a bit of love. . I know yes I know you reviewed it in the past but how about using the Bluguitar amp with these epic pedal demos?
I like this format as it allows us to experience pedals that aren't necessarily staples in the community. What I think is most important about this though, is that you are showing pedal builders that if they send you stuff it could get airtime. Not that I want the focus of the show to become you guys just demoing products for people, but the more access to gear you get means the more knowledge you can impart to us less experienced players. Maybe a once a month feature? Make it well known through the channel that you'll do something like that?
I wish Dan could do a short tutorial like he used to when G2 came out, showing how to save presets on the MD500 to presets on G2 via MIDI.. very easy with strymon pedals, not so sure the best way to do it with the MD500?
My favorite part of these videos is seeing Dan just get moved by the tone. If he becomes gobsmacked by the sound of a pedal, then that tells me I should buy it. Bet you can't guess what overdrive I'm buying next?
+Derby City Rock Co Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jack White, Dan Auerbach etc etc etc. Those are good routes into understanding the appeal of fuzz. :0)
You guys should try SolidGoldFX pedals. The Rosie is my favorite fuzz and I would love to see you trying the new mini-boosters. P.S.: I'm not being paid by SolidGoldFX. P.P.S.: I really wish I was being paid by SolidGoldFX.
