Life too short for long RU-vid videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we have a preliminary taste of the main food groups when it comes to guitar synthesis. From the simple Digitech Synth Wah to the mighty Roland GR-55 and GK MIDI pickup, guitar synthesis offers you a colossal range of options and sounds beyond your ‘normal’ amps and pedals. Huge, crushing distorted synth lead lines, whammy-type bends, sample and hold, crazy church organ madness through to a full-on jazz trio? It’s all here and a whole world more besides. Let’s synthesise, baby…

The difficult issue for synth pedals, is that guitarist only think guitar. A synth is a whole different instrument. And it seems that in order to make this pedal work well, one has to get out of the mindset of being a guitarist and explore a whole new landscape of sounds and color. If all one wants is another color to the guitar riffs, then play around with the various overdrives and modulation pedals. If one choses to enter the realm of synthesizers, then begin thinking globally with the landscape and environment of the music.

I haven't gone thru all the comments, so I don't know this has already been said, but: as a bassist and lover of synth tones, the sickness you guys were feeling about the harsh highs are because you both were favoring the bridge pickups. Most synth pedal makers will suggest you use the neck pickup because they track better. The bridge pickup sends too much attack transients to the synths, whereas the neck pickup will send more balanced level of throughout the entire frequency spectrum. I'd also have suggested you guys play with trying the fuzz after the synth pedals, because the synth engines track better with clean signals. There's obviously no right order, but with the ease of order switching on the G2, I'd have liked to hear both ways on a few of your examples. Still a lot of fun to watch. Keep it up.

Couldn’t agree more. I quite like TPS but at time’s they really don’t do their research and don’t do a enough to showcase some of the specialist pedals. But they’ll talk about OD pedals all day. Id rather they had guests on to do the demos, people that know how to get the best from them. it’s a bit harsh to say but M&D are rather one trick ponies, you get the impression they’re just fumbling there way through, with no real clue. Laughing at each other whenever one creates a weird sound, just like kids do when one does a fart. When it comes to creativity and diversity they just don’t cover the bases these pedals would be used. Being blunt, they should rename the channel to “The sound like SRV show”. Sorry to sound harsh but the name doesn’t fit their MO.

I’m a synth/keyboard player in my band Black Whales and have recently purchased a few synth pedals. I was getting really board with keyboards and felt stuck creatively. It’s really opened up so many doors with my guitar playing. Also, the singer in my band wanted to play more keys and I wanted to play more guitar but not sound like I’m playing guitar. This pedals have solved so many issues. Just AWESOME!

@forester057
@forester057 7 лет назад
Matt Raino How can I debate it (lol we just did)? I just can cause I'm human and I have ears that don't like Rush. Different people have different tastes. They are talented. Just not the sound I like is all. Mr busy drums and whinny voice guy just make the whole thing a bit comical (I seriously thought my friend was joking when he played it and said he liked it about 30 years ago).
@mattraino3274
@mattraino3274 7 лет назад
David D Ok fair enough. And apologies for the 'tube' comment. Still- why pee on others love for a subjective experience? Perhaps it's when we hear music and the context that can color it so....I suggest more respect for the taste of others. Respectfully....

That was hilarious and entertaining, especially the full prog-off at the beginning (and the Zappa style stuff later on). As someone who plays keys and guitar it was especially great to watch. I agree with Dan about using a guitar synth to play sounds that are specifically *not* piano etc. I think using the synth timbres mixed with regular guitar tones is where it's at. It's basically what guys using Eventide and really high end effects over the years were doing, just not with pitch-to-MIDI.

Brilliant video as always. Years ago I had one of the early Roland guitar synths, which was a far cry from the GR55, but I always found to get the best of it, I had to imagine I was playing the instrument I was trying to imitate, rather than playing a guitar. I had particular difficulty because I tend to string bend without realising it - I'm sure most guitarists do - which was a definite no-no when sounding like a flute or vibes etc.

Awesome another great vid I've fallen way down the synth rabbit hole I really like the boss sy 300 I don't always use synth still love traditional effects too but I tried the whole midi pickup thing and I'm amazed at what the sy 300 can accomplish without a midi pickup needed and because of that you don't have to worry about tracking it works just like a traditional effect. Can't wait for every new episode of that pedal show you guys are freaking awesome much love

Dan - if you really take to the synth guitar you may want to consider doing what I did and build the pickup inside the body of the guitar. You can do it so the guitar doesn't even look like it has a synth pickup as the pickup can be built into the saddles at the bridge. Look at the Graphtech Ghost system. That's what I have and the control switches are little toggles on the guitar with pull switches on the normal guitar knobs to be able to blend the raw guitar tone with the synth tone as well as use the saddle pickup as an acoustic guitar tone as well. The guitar was built by Charles Cilia in Sydney. He now helps build guitars for Industrial Radio guitars which is the cutting edge of synth guitars where the synth is truly hidden in the guitar. Each fretwire is connected to the tiny brain in the guitar so that you can put a separate sample at every note on the board. It uses a special guitar pick that helps detect the attack. I used it in a test run in his workshop and it is even more accurate and totally glitch free unlike the Graphtech and Roland systems. Plugged into the Axon box and then MIDI to a Muse Research Receptor running Ableton synths, it was massive through his QSC PA system blended with an Axe-FX and it didn't sound as plasticky or gimmicky as the built in sounds of the Roland GR series or even the built in sounds of the Axon. I'm sort of surprised you went with an external Roland pickup when there are many better options especially when you had a custom guitar built for it. Cool show though and I really love that you touched on this aspect of guitar. I've learnt so much from your show and wish I had known this stuff years ago when I was gigging with Midi, pedals, and rack systems through a Sherlock Fathead and my Belman Albatross.

Inspired by John McLaughlin (one the key pioneer users of the guitar-synth!), I started down the midi path in 1990 with a tele + shadow synth system connected via Yamaha TX-7. I've since changed to the Axon AX-100 with Godin Guitars SA classical + freeway. I used it live and combined the sounds with regular guitar via a 2 or 3 guitar amp system.

I'd love to see an episode on strange delays (Red Panda effects, etc), weird bitcrushy stuff, and especially an envelope filter shootout (OG Mutron, Mu-FX TruTron, ThreeLeaf Audio Proton, Keeley Neutrino, EHX QTron, etc etc etc). The Deadheads in your audience (myself included) would REJOICE at an envelope filter episode!

+Gene Chaban We need to show on that stuff. Bitcrusher, presumably?

That Pedal Show It does the bit crusher thing, but it is also does a hp/lpf with sweeping frequencies, very cool delay with glitched out trails, infinite reverbs with modulation, octaves and a lot more.. All that with an expression pedal that can be assigned to change the function... Something for part 2 of the synth episode maybe? ;)

That Pedal Show a show using bit crushers, low fi delay and reverb, mobius destroyer, heck even the jhs crayon or color box to get that crazy breakup those achieve turned up. Get some midi control thrown in on some of that and the possibilities are interesting!

The Digitech Dirty Robot is the Synth Wah combined with a Vox synth I believe. I just picked one up and its my new favorite pedal. Does everything the Synth Wah does and more!

I write/perform music that is just layers upon layers of looped guitar tracks; stuff like this'll REALLY push my sound waaaaay out there! So thanks for letting me know where to take my money next :)

Ideas for episodes: Oil can delays, octave-fuzz (both for sub octave and octave up) Harmonic trem, different stages of phasing, wah part 2, envelope filter, FF type pedals, Octavia type pedals, tone bender type pedals, and super fuzz type pedals. There is everything that I can think of that I want to see

I was just listening to Thomas Wynn & the Believers, there was an insanely fast electric harmonica solo, now I'm pretty sure they used GR-55 so if you use them carefully they can work in the context of a 'normal' song. Great stuff.

guys you need to include next time the TWA Analog Octaver! i think its one or the best synth pedal out there! luv your show btw!thanks for incl the Digitech Synth Wah, im digging mine and i believe its a very underrated pedal!

And definitely the Octron 3 analog Octaver! I have all the usual Octave pedals and units, but this Foxfox Octron sounds so awesome and organic that I can't stop playing it. They really need to go and revisit Octave pedals including new analog octavers.

If anyone wants an excellent example of one way to utilize the Synth Engine pedal, look up the band "Turnover". This pedal is used on every song on their record Peripheral Vision. The rhythm guitarist hits the chord thats the key of the song and then swells into the note so that theres a cool synth effect underneath the whole song.

Hey guys I just wanted to say I love your channel, it's helped so much with getting into pedals. I was just curious if these or any synth pedal has a recommended spot in a signal chain? Whether it be at the very end, before reverb etc. Thanks!!

Hi guys I have an SY300 no need for any midi pickup .I find it a very powerful and versatile unit .great video !!!!!!!

@jimspinner9030 7 лет назад
Chaps, the gk does no processing (apart from amplification), it only takes the signals from each string (and the guitar pickups) and passes them on to the main unit for processing.

I'm with Dan. That could pull you out of a rut. I could see it used in recording cool loops to play over. Mick, I don't know how it plays but I'm falling in love with that Collins, don't know how you are gonna give it up. Thanks for all you guys do.
