In this preliminary episode (yes there will be more, based on the questions you ask following this one) Daniel and Mick get busy with the rockingest - literally - pedal of all time, the fantabulous manual foot-treadle-operated envelope filter.
That’s the wah-wah pedal, just in case you hadn’t worked it out by this point.
We set out to address a number of questions ranging from the basic to the slightly less basic: what is it; how does it react with overdrive and fuzz; what is a half-cocked wah, and just how does the Vox V847 Handwired compare to the standard V847? Burning issues, all.

Rediscovering Wah for the last 18 months after a number of years without one have to say a big thank you to Mick and Dan because until watching this video I have always accepted the way the switch worked and never thought about how to adjust it. Simple to do when you know how!

Best wah I've ever used is the Ibanez Weepin' Demon. It's the best pedal of any kind I've ever used, infact. It's my desert island pedal. It has several knobs to tweak the sound. It has the auto-return when you take your foot of the pedal it goes off. And it sounds absolutely brilliant.

Great video! Even tho I've been playing electric for ~24 years, I'm always learning something new. I had no idea that a fuzz pedal had such a massive frequency range. I read somewhere that fuzz pedals acted like a filter pedal and mixing a wah and a fuzz was like mixing to freq filter pedals. I never understood that. Your explanation about what a wah does before, and after, a fuzz pedal was really helpful and insightful. I think I like the sound of a wah going into the fuzz, as it keeps the guitar sound large, and doesn't shrink it - for reasons you already explained. And Daniel Steinhardt, does playing the wah bring your inner shred out? :D Good stuff!

Just in case anyone's wondering "Q" stands for "Quality" and is usually described as being higher when the frequency band is tighter, I tend to think of it like a knife, a higher quality blade has a finer, sharper point. Bugged the hell out of me through college until I went and looked it up!

Anyone else notice that most beautifully amazing yet completely unintentional vocal harmony at 15:36? Lol nicely done gents, as was the rest of the video. I agree with the comment below on perhaps doing a video on rotary speaker simulators as long as you can find and lug an actual Leslie in for a authenticity reference. I'm thinking about picking up a Strymon Lex but would first love your opinions, which I hold in the highest regard, on a plethora of rotary simulators. Cheers!

Criminy!,~ that's what's needed,- one before AND one after... What a fantastic invention .Consistently suprised by what you can do with wah,- even the basic models,- and there is the real danger of frittering away hours fooling with them.I think many don't really consider the myriad of more subtle uses, and dismiss them as gimmicky. Think that wah and the basic volume pedal are two of the most unexplored and underated tools available(Vox, no doubt, sets the tonal standard;but, be nice if they kept up with features, including simple true bypass.). Thought Dan was going to lapse into some Killing Joke with that Muff hybrid. Nice.
@lance134679

Groovy and funky. Considering what a simple concept the wah pedal is - a sweeping frequency filter, it's amazing how deep the subject it can be. I like pedals that give you a few controls over Q and overall EQ, especially if they're mini. In future videos, it would be nice if you were able to borrow a few other wah pedals, especially those from smaller pedal makers.
@bcg2g
@bcg2g 8 лет назад
This is great! I ~think~ I understand how my RMC3 controls work now... except for the dip switches. Lord, those dip switches... anyways, question: there's a point at which some wah sweeps, when paired with some overdrive, sound like a door slamming open and shut rather than a nice smooth sweep. The Xotic and the Boss did this a little on certain settings while the others smoothed through it. Any insights as to why? Would this strictly be in the Q? Too wide maybe? I have had this problem on an RMC3 and it's really frustrating to troubleshoot. Also, didn't Frank Zappa use alot of 'stuck wah' tones? Thanks for the videos!

For your Fuzz/Wah episode (if you haven't filmed it already) you should check out the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz-Wah (JH-1FW) from Dunlop. The side switches allow you to choose Wah--Fuzz or Fuzz--Wah. You can use just the way or just the fuzz and there are knobs on the side and bottom to control each. I don't think they sell them anymore, but I'm sure you guys could get your hands on one....or make one. Thanks again for the show. Great episode.

I have a Thomas Organ made in Italy Vox wah that I bought used in the early '70s. Compared to CryBabys of the time it had a sharper "whack" to the upper end of the range. You could also slip the rack on the pedal a tooth one way or the other to change the range the wah works in since the treadle doesn't utilize the full rotation of the pot. Unfortunately about 10 years ago the Vox started making funny noises on occasion so I put it away and got a CryBaby 535Q which also has the variable Q control and could do both the sharp Vox sound and the softer CryBaby sound. I had a Univox wah in the late '60s that was optical but it had a metal flag between the lamp and photodiode with a V cut into it. Worked but had nowhere the sound of the Vox I got later on.

My favorite wah, after long using the midrangey vox style wah, is the rmc "wheels of fire" wah, based on the macari wahs Clapton used with cream. Really worth checking out, either the rmc reissue or original if you can find one. I don't think a better wah exists with teles/SG/ or other mid pushed guitars as this wah has a scooped sound. Anyways, thanks for the video as always, cheers!

Hi guys! I am a huge fan and I loved the episode, keep up the great work! I just have a couple of quick questions... 1) I use an Xotic XW-1 & when I play live I notice that sometimes I lose a lot of sound and my guitar doesn't cut through the mix when the pedal is rocked to a certain position. Is this an issue that is best fixed by adjusting the EQ or the Wah-Q of the pedal? I believe that if I make the Wah-Q wider by turning it down I will keep more mids (and cut through the mix better?), but I will lose more of the wah effect that I like. What would be your best advice? 2) Would you tell me how you set the Bias, Wah-Q, Treble and Bass on the XW-1 in order to get the Budwah sound like you did in the video? Also do you think adjusting the internal dip switches and gain trimmer will help match the sound better? If you have the time, let me know if you have any success in trying these adjustments. Thank you in advance for taking a moment to address my questions!

I have that Boss wah, and it was really difficult to turn it off and on, it required so much force... I skimmed the rubber studs and now it's perfect. Along with the wah I use it for the univibe which I find quite good. I have it set up so that I can change between wah and univibe with the heel switch.

Now that I've watched the whole video, I can say that you can calibrate the pedal travel to your liking, and it looks like you are keeping the distortion modelling on, so no wonder it "adds something". Just twist the drive know all the way down.

great video as ever guys, you've always been a fantastic source of info going all the way back to Daniels gig rig vids on how to set up fuzz, distortion and OD. but I think you missed an opportunity here. Yes you have 6 great wahs, but 5 of them are basically vox/crybaby based designs and sound pretty similar with the same basic characteristics, even with Q adjustment controls etc. there's a few other classic wahs out there that have their own sounds and are available as clones or reissues. I only say because you do so many great comparisons on a theme. all fuzz, or OD, or delay etc. nobody has really done the same thing with wahs. coloursounds, boomerang BG2s (THE shaft wah, also used on crazy mama by JJ. cale), Chicago iron parapedal, the ibanez WH10. any of these would give the black label bud-wah a run for its money.. yep, I'm a wah geek. cheers!

i thought you guys had more subs. oh well this is still a lot. And that gig rig is one one of the coolest things ever. I am going to buy a G2 but I need to wait and save up a lot. This one looks really nice as well, a lot less space, you wouldn't even need 2 giant pedal boards, maybe save room and just buy one I enjoy knowing the basics about how the pedals works, too. It simple stuff after all how you explain it

I've had V Wah since it first came out, and it's incredibly much more broad than what's shown. You can customize the range of attack from shallow to super deep. The stock settings you guys are showing are very shallow. If you take 30 minutes to learn how to use it, you can create all those wahs on the board. My only issue, and it might just be mine, but it seems to cut out the sound when it's turned off and on. Might need to do a factory reset to correct that. I also forgot the built in Uni Vibe, Suppressor, Vowel simulator, and multiple Distortion pedals. It has four presets, so you have four different modulators in one pedal... and a suppressor! C'mon brobinos... Get your shit together. hahaha

Same, I have had it for 20 years or so? My only issue with it is I wish the built in boosts, fuzz, distortion, could be set up to turn on once the wah is engaged rather than always on.

First time I saw a wha on trumpet was not so long ago with Snarky Puppy... I was like "waou, such a great idea!". But I didn't know it was done before nor it was one of the origins of the wha! Thanks!

Dude, me too! I saw that guy and was like, damn that's inventive. Still, respect guys who steal little techniques like that and make it their own.

I have recently bought a Morley power wah. It is just too subtle. Like when the cue is wide. Is there any way to mod the pedal to change this? Or should I just move on to another pedal? I've considered changing the hole size on the shutter that blocks the light. Not sure if this will help. Cheers

Big Jim Sullivan guested on the Bay city rollers TV show. Shangalang. Inspired me to get my first electric. a £25 zenta. I still recall the one when Eric jammed with Jim on a white strat and a fuzz pedal. I have a white strat now!!! Arrrghhh!! Just realised the link.

I've had a Dimebag CBH wah for a few years and had though I'd never need another wah... Then I decided I wanted another wah for a second pedalboard I'm building and found a great price on a used Vox 847... I'm conflicted as to which wah to put in my main pedalboard now. The CBH is more versatile because of its adjustable parameters; but the Vox just sounds incredible!

Hey fellas. Great show. Currently shopping for a wah and kind of got my sites set on the CAE MC404 crybaby. Seems like a pretty versatile tool and the two different inductors and the boost seem to add a huge amount of flexibility. Just wondering what your thoughts are on that model?

I like the Budwah the best. To me it's the smoothest on the high end and just has a great sound throughout the sweep. Honestly about anything would sound quite good through both those amps, though! They complement each other so well.

Great video as always. Jokes about electric trumpet mutes aside, this original application of a wah DOES make sense when you consider the similar sound of the plunger mute - something jazz trumpeters and trombonists had been using for decades prior to the pedal's creation.
