@@saya7292 The normal expression is 'Lulled him into a FALSE sense of security' meaning that he believes you to be a friend (but you are not). Here Jim changes the idiom into 'Lulled him into a TRUE sense of security' meaning that Sir Humphrey Appleby was an idiot (which in this case he was) . He was an idiot for trusting his colleague who was someone not to be trusted- he was a spy for the Soviets.

I looked up the actor who played Sir Arnold to see what happened to him, turns out that as of this post, the actor who plays him is still alive and well at the age of 93.

Well said, it's John Nettleton. The man outlived all three main characters including Fowlds (Bernard), his younger and the only to die of less aggressive causes. Quite something.

Kind of makes sense for him to have outlived the other three. After all, his character, sir Arnold, was always on top of the situation. He has the last laugh, so to speak.

Arnold is a terrifying figure for the full might of practised, intelligent, validated and rewarded cynicism. As much as his like must be respected and definitely heard, one mustn't carelessly condone this, something Hacker ineptly but on some level consistently understands. There is something fundamentally contrary to the best sides of life in that darkly monolithic mindset.

There is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. Arnold is a superbly well written/acted character but if he used too often than 1 of 2 things would have to happen: 1. Arnold always outsmarts every other character, and it will be seasons of "Arnold and the fools" which is very very boring. 2. In order to prevent 1, they dumb down Arnold which in turn ruins his character. Both are bad. So, the best case is to use him small doses.

One of the most convincing transformations this show pulled off was raising the intellectual minimum bar to astronomical levels, to the point where a character as obscenely intelligent as Sir Humphrey could be portrayed, given the right circumstances, as a goof (sic), did not break the theme or the presentation of the show.

Sir Arnold Robinson would never threaten the Prime Minister, certainly not in such a blatant manner. First, because it was unnecessary, a well-placed suggestion was just as effective without repercussions. Second, because it would be uncouth and boorish, unworthy of such a refined gentleman.

My friend recommended this show to me and said that it is "arguably the best". I disagree with him, as the use of the word "arguably" is unfair. THIS IS *THE* BEST SHOW EVER MADE. No counter arguments accepted.

The comedic timing of both of these actors is delightfully perfect. The mis-speaks, hesitations, and 'cogs-turning' helps lift the highly crafted script.

This scene makes Sir Arnold look like a soviet spy. He NEEDS Jim and Humpy working together and, at zero hour, a mysterious diary entry is found. Almost too convenient. And the wording is something you'd expect someone who knows Humpy to say.

@@ThatGuyNicho true, but he was (until retiring on a yacht and gentlemans club owner) the most powerful man on the show, controlling the Pm in Yes, Minister. Even Hacker says as such in one episode "Its frightning, you know. Sir Arnold might be the most powerful man in the country. Direct access to number 10, control over government policies, first hand knowledge of cabniet reshuffles before even the PM...."

It wouldn't make sense that Sir Arnold is a soviet spy just from this scene; after all, he's just bringing the information from MI5, as Humphrey's superior. Even in the context of this show, Sir Arnold is the ultimate civil servant insider, it wouldn't make sense for him to fabricate something that he personally hands over to Hacker.

In other words, because Humphrey has tricked him so many times, he has learnt to recognize the tactics of the civil service, and made him a smarter politician.

Humphrey could still be a spy and Halsted was just unaware of it. Maybe Humphrey was 'higher up' in the command chain and was tasked with aiding Halsted, a lower cog, avoid detection and expressly forbidden from disclosing to Halsted that they were on the same side ;-)

I wouldn't say Arnold disdained Humphrey. Most of the time the two of them were thick as thieves, and Arnold did support Humphrey to replace him as Cabinet Secretary. It's just that Sir Arnold Robinson was a next-level bureaucrat.

The quality and sharp wit, the brilliant acting and the timeless context of the political shenanigans made the series brilliant. ( except the attempt to bring an updated series on UK Gold was nothing short of dreadful). The frightening thing is how true it rings today.

Sir Arnold is my favourite character. His Machiavellian attitude, cunningness, etc are a turnoff at first but later on one starts to like his presence…he is a shrewd bureaucrat. Even Sir Humphrey is fearful of him.

John Nettleton who played Sir Arnold is so far as of March 2022 still alive, aged 93.
