That Rotor Riot bridge dive - where do you stand?

(Edit) a lot of people have said stuff like "but they are professionals" or "are very skilled" but sometimes shirt happens to even the best pilots, including members of RR: • Third Person Drift (end edit)
They broke Transport Canada regulations by diving a bridge with cars and trucks on it -- but was this as bad as some folk are making out? Where do you stand on that video... was it just "great fun" or was it an unreasonable risk and unfair on the Canadian model flying community whose rights and privileges would have been at further risk if something had gone wrong?
And what do you think Rotor Riot could do to make their videos more entertaining without jeopardizing the rights and privileges of others?
Don't just think about it -- have your say in the comments below...

No matter how good the pilot, pulling stunts like that in a place like that is going to damage the reputation of our hobby. Yes Bruce, just imagine if the media gets hold of it, you can just imagine how they will use it to portray the hobby. Talking of which, here in the UK the Dartmoor National Park Authority have just brought in a blanket ban of all drone flying on Dartmoor - simply because of some pilot doing something stupid, then posting it online. In that case a miniquad pilot was tearing along the roads buzzing cars and flying alongside the drivers window whilst the car was being driven down the road. Someone sent the footage into the authorities, and they in turn showed it to the media. Resulting in a total ban on unauthorized drone flying within the national park. The authorities had been looking for a reason to ban all drones due to complaints about irresponsible pilots worrying wildlife and flying too close to people, the video footage done the trick. So to find someone like rotor riot getting involved in such irresponsible behavior is the last thing this hobby needs right now.
@55Rumble
@55Rumble 6 лет назад
Totally agree....But isn't flying in a national park banned anyway?
@100SteveB
@100SteveB 6 лет назад
KillerDave55, Not up till now, they have been happy for many years to allow people to fly fixed wings etc, simply because the pilots were responsible and considerate in their actions. But uneducated miniquad and drone pilots have not been acting responsibly - chasing cars on the roads, buzzing people out for walks, and scaring the wildlife. So the authorities have dug up an old by-law that would cover them banning drones. Sadly people acting irresponsibly is going to end up with more and more authorities simply saying no more drone flying.

@ 100SteveB,spot on mate and i agree 100% with your comment,i'm in the UK too but no where near Dartmoor sorry to say but i've often thought to myself that would be a great place to fly and away from people, (of course you get this idiot flying along the road side,scaring the wildlife and chasing people,where in his stupid little mind did he think that was safe or fun,the mind boggles) sorry to read about this but are you still allowed to fly fixed wing? i noticed you did mention them so guessing and hopping you still can,just for your sake and other responsible RC fliers. Thanks for sharing this sad story as it's appreciated.

mcgherkinstudios = I am in north Devon, right on the edge of Exmoor - just wondering how long it will be before Exmoor follows suit and bans it. Not long i am guessing. All of this is worrying because like Dartmoor, Exmoor covers a vast area - pretty much half of north Devon.

It's not even "if he had crashed" it's when transport Canada or whatever see the video, they see a distraction to drivers and a potential hazard. Then suddenly we find we can't fly withing 100 feet of roads (which technically we already can't since you can't fly close to people, buildings or possessions?) I mean look at all the fencing that transport authorities put up near airports or on bridges. They are terrified of drivers being distracted haha

Even if someone is the best in the world in doing something.... There is always the risk of a technical failure of the gear... And then you have a uncontrolled 700g piece of material around many people. The danger of something like this is real. And the danger of hurting someone in a car is real too. Here in Germany happened horrible accidents when people were throwing stones from bridges over the autobahn onto cars. Don't get me wrong, I am totally excited by these fascinating videos and it happens too often, that, after I have flown somewhere, I think, oops, maybe I shouldn't have done this, because it was a bit dangerous.... Maybe there is an additional argument, the rr guys are half of my age, maybe they think a bit different in the future about what they do now, maybe not...

"I don't think you have the right to ruin other people's hobbys" yeah i think he's focused on the wrong peoples RIGHTS in this.. its not about rotor riots rights.. its not about ours.. its about the people using the bridge who have the right to be safe. I almost fought an ACRO FPV guy who was diving the queensboro bridge last week because he was diving DIRECTLY above my girlfriend and I laying in the grass.. then he flies between the bridge cables and crashes with his drone landing 20 feet from us.. then he tries to play stupid like he couldn't see us until i call him out "Is that a run cam?? yeah you could see me in a white shirt unless your camera settings are shit!" I love flying fpv but i HATE almost everyone i've come across that does it.. maybe that's just NY/NYC??

Take the quad and run man! That's a free runcam by the looks of it. I don't know why some people are stupid and fly near others (I might try to shave my beard or land on my box goggles with a Lizard95, but never do something stupid like that to others! Its fine if I cut my own throat with my 250mm race quad blade, but I would feel awful if I even rolled over onto someones shoe (motors off even). Always respect people's property and safety, you can fly through the window of your own can at 50mph, but don't get anywhere near endangering others. I don't get why that is so hard to understand.

There is no excuse, it is thrilling, cool, makes Your jaw drop and all, but there is a lot of traffic on the bridge. It does not go well with other drone freestyle videos that for example Drew and Tommy himself publish - in those You can`t see anyone around - parking lots - empty, bandos - empty. They could have done it early in the morning when there is hardly any traffic (not that I know anything about traffic on that bridge..) It would still look as cool as it did..

@alllbe
@alllbe 6 лет назад
Yes, simple and logic solution, punish him ONLY! New rules, laws will not prevent these stunts. E.g. Car industry. A irresponsible car driver is 1000x more destructive than a 500gr droooooone... It will not ruin the hobby, we will just need to pay more for it, as authorities will put rules , and these laws cost a lot of money... But in the end nothing will change , "irresponsible" pilots will always be part of the system.

Imperial Fire it's down right quadracide and we need to stop them from killing baby giraffes and hippos. They must be stopped! Do you realize you're talking about something that weighs roughly a pound like it's a Katusha rocket. You are literally hundreds of thousands times more likely to be hit by someone riding a bicycle or even a baseball on your way to work in the morning. Let's end baseball golf while we're at it. Way too dangerous!

If this was the first occurrence I might agree that we should cut them a little slack and hopefully Chad will learn that this isn't the best way to represent the brand or the hobby. Unfortunately this is not the case. A similar uproar occurred for a previous (now removed) rotor riot video with Steele diving sky rise buildings in downtown Atlanta. I predict that the bridge diving video will soon also be removed due to the backlash in an attempt to minimize the negative impact on the brand. Unfortunately the negative effect on the hobby can't be so easily removed.

Unsubbed and will never buy any of their stuff again. Even Trappy has changed TBS into a respected brand now which doesnt engage in this crap anymore. I urge everyone to report the vid and let Chad get the message - so that he may correct RotorRiots direction before its too late for him and our hobby.

Bruce - I just watched it (Thanks for the link!) and left the Rotor Riot brats a few words of wisdom. Here in the former Land of Smiles the government recently announced that ALL drones are banned unless registered within the next 90 days, which the stop watch began counting down 2-3 weeks ago. It's already been a nightmare to import toy-/hobby-grade drones here this past year (ask me how I know that) and now we have another fatwah from Thailand's military junta leader announcing this new ban. Yep, irresponsible flying videos posted on RU-vid give government morons more and more ammunition to kill or hobby. Oh well.

In the UK we have laws that prohibit flying within a certain distance of roads and structures - I assume it is the same in Canada. If so, it doesn't matter if what they are doing is considered by some to be "art", they are still breaking the law - end of story.

Hi Richard, The CAA info sheet, CAP 1202, says: "It is illegal to fly your unmanned aircraft over a congested area (streets, towns and cities). Keep your distance 50 metres. Don’t fly your unmanned aircraft within 50m of a person, vehicle, building or structure, or overhead groups of people at any height." So I interpreted that to mean it is illegal to fly within 50 metres of a road/street.

Well delivered story Bruce, I'm a bit that way in regard to being critical of this type of quad footage. There will be fans and critics no matter what, but perception of the non modellers are what probably hurts us the most and they are a much bigger crowd than the people flying fpv, the voters if you like! If we behave better, we surely have a stronger chance of being able to legally do this stuff in a safe manner away from potential impact on others. If we flaunt the possibilities like this video does then we should expect stronger regulation and the likelihood of the FPV hobby's demise as we know it
@anthonywitham2305

That video is just more ammunition for the politicians, rule makers and others who are crippling this hobby. It will reinforce the public view that these "drones" and the people who fly them are dangerous. Just what we need at the time when the media is sensationalising anything to do with "drones." I can hear the sound of more restricted rules on the way.

i did wonder why chad posted this edit, its clear to see tommy trying to avoid flying over the traffic, and failing, so wind direction would be a safety factor in all this.. was it blowing him onto or off of the bridge. everybody defending the video seems to think he didnt fly over the traffic at any point, i think its fairly clear he did more than twice, like i say while trying hard to avoid doing that. so yes, this was dodgerous flying. and yeah nurks one battery uncut flight was without doubt the flight of the year, i wish it had gone viral, he did another one in a river gorge that was just as good but it was several bats and finalglideaus's video was my second favorite of the year, one is the maximum of what a drone can do, and the other is maximum of what a drone can see.

For the general public, these RC craft are unpredictable and therefore scary. The operator knows what they intend to do and how manoeuvrable the craft is but if the number of RC crash videos is an indicator, even the operators are not to be trusted. Perception is everything and people have many fears that in this case are justifiable. These people who push the limits of RC aircraft MUST do so in safer locations and perceived safer locations.

I'm a bit on the fence myself Bruce. I love watching spectacular visuals as well as the rest, but do question the intent sometimes. I saw the video, questioned how close to cars we flew. I think the issue is distractions for an already distracted driver base. The mini quad itself is going to cause minimal damage to a vehicle or bridge, but a distracted or startled driver will hurl a heavy piece of machinery in the drink or neighboring traffic. Safe is only as safe as you can control. Thanks for bringing this up Bruce, something for us all to take a good, hard look at.

There is definitely a time and place for everything. Don't think that is the right place with that many people nearby - as spectacular as the video is. I agree with you Bruce. There has to be a way to create an eye popping video without the need to endanger others. As much as I like the video, and admire his skills as a pilot, he still risked a potential accident that could have cost someone their life. And I am not in favor of anything that puts humans as risk.

The question is, of all the stunts like this where something DIDN'T go wrong, how many are we not shown where it DID go wrong...I do find videos like this bridge dive to be pretty irresponsible, they have a young and enthusiastic crowd, they should be setting an example, because amateur and unskilled pilots will try to do as they do, and will fail, causing us all bigger problems.

It will be a wonder if these guys, amazing pilots, make it another year without loss of license and lawsuits. Steele/Skitzo already got arrested once, and then in the video after Steele tells how he "told them how it is" . . . I bet that plays into their next legal issue. I fly near buildings, even a train . . but not over people ever. But to each his own, good luck RR! I unsubbed long ago.

Hello Bruce, "I Do Not want to upset Anyone, or hurt the hobby (that I LOVE) in any way shape or form". Although, I Sincerely Mean it when I say That I Support Rotor Riot 100%, I Would NOT want ANYONE to Try to Duplicate Their FPV Videos, Stunts, or Flight Objectives in certain Places where People are present, but not participating in the Flight / Hobby at that time. I Don't Get Enough Flight time in to Even Trust Myself. I Do Not Know Any of The Members of Rotor Riot Personally, Although I Feel Like I Do know them all to an extent. I Personally Believe they ALL CARE Much MORE Than one Might Think Just By watching a few of their Video's. They ALL Truly LOVE FPV, and Would NEVER Deliberately Do Something to Hurt the Hobby For Any of Us Including Themselves. I Have Faith in Them ALL, and do Believe they are ALL Chasing the American DREAM, Excluding Chad:). Chad Appears to Just LOVE To Fly FPV, (Income or Not), from the best of my Knowledge.. Just Keeping up with A U-Tube Account is HARD WORK as I'm Sure You Can Agree ESPECIALLY if your Trying to Do it on the Side while Trying to Keep it Interesting, Without the Same Old Same Old Every Video. I Probably Wouldn't Hurt For Them to Make Just ONE Serious Video explaining how they have all had many years of practice, and in no way shape or form mean to instigate, or put ideas in ANYONE'S HEAD that would cause them to try, and Duplicate ANY Of Their Complex Maneuvers Around / Over People. As I mentioned before I like them ALL, and wish them All Of The SUCCESS IN THE WORLD!!! Maybe some type of short conversation between all of the guys at the end of these, what is interpreted as Risky videos saying please do not try this, or what you have seen in this video yourself. What we do is just as dangerous as it is fun in (Some Cases). They all have grown for the most part as personalities are concerned so I'm sure between all of them they can in a positive without sounding stuck up way simply say we have crashed thousands of times between us all and the risk for error is razor thin. It's not worth destroying your 200 To $1,000 racing quad that you have spent hours if not days tediously assembling and wiring just for a short video that is literally impossible to go viral UNLESS they were to CAUSE some type of extremely complex ACCIDENT like you described in your video about an elaborate car crash sparked By a out of control "*UAV*". The way I see it anyone filming something like this without the skills to perform it 99.9% of the time flawlessly we just be doing it for bragging rights and there isn't a lot of bragging rights tied in to destroying your beloved equipment and hurting people getting yourself thrown in jail and one of the ugliest pictures you've ever taken on national TV looking like a MORON to the UAV / Drone community, but more importantly the rest of the WORLD. I'm aware that needs to be trimmed down a bit, but I'm sure you get my point and as far as the guys and rotor riot themselves are concerned I don't get a chance to watch every single video they turn out although I wish I could. From what I have seen this is one of the only ones I've seen with public traffic under them as they fly fpv. All of the videos I have seen are at the most avoiding security guards because they have DELIBERATELY WAITED for the public to leave and rushing to get there equipment out and goggles on before the sun goes down Exedra. Minus the video where they asked the police to fly brushed mini whoops around the boardwalk and a little bit of flying through I believe it was a donut hole in a sign. Can't remember exactly. In conclusion, I Do Not Personally believe they are just Deliberately without any regard for their fellow man, woman, FPV Brother, or child flying over crowds doing backflips barrel rolls, or tricks even Steele Hasn't had Time to come up with a name for yet on a regular basis with ZERO RESPECT for the law, or by standards safety. Let me say again I have not been able to watch every single video ever released buy rotor riot but what I have seen is a Group of FRIENDS trying 2 Entertain, While stay as responsible as possible at the same time which has never been easy when it comes to (Anything These Day's) Not Just FPV. I think the most productive way 2 have a conversation with someone is to not appear angry, jealous, envious or anything other than just sincerely concerned about the future of FPV, and more and more regulations without clearly looking like a Hater. I say that with the most sincerity because it's so easy to rub someone the wrong way with good intentions, but the wrong attitude. This is never productive and has led to more Wars than I can count. Turning the Emotions Down a notch to have a discussion, or voice one's opinion will always get you further, and allow a more successful Possibility of reaching someone with an open mind rather than immediately getting written off as a hater, or troublemaker which know one tends to listen to objectively. That is just my two cents, and I never claimed to have all the answers. I just believe in ideas, and healthy NON Emotional discussions. Happy Flying to All, and to All a Good Night!!!:). God Bless

Thanks for keeping it civil Bruce! Like you said, to outright condemn or celebrate these actions really misses a valuable opportunity to have a conversation. It's important to break down where exactly peoples concerns are coming from: 1) Safety of Civilians 2) Legal issues for Tommy & RR 3) Potential new laws introduced b/c of this video In my opinion, if you think (1) safety was met, then 2&3 aren't that important. And in fact, if that was legal then that's was brilliant sendup of some of the most restrictive drone laws in the world.

Simple answer: if a Formula 1 driver ripped down a bunch of local community roads exceeding 150+ MPH would you then say, “never mind, you’re a professional race car driver”. Not the same thing? If that Quad came down and went through someone’s windshield we would be having a different discussion. Even when a professional driver tears down a towns roads it is usually a publicity stunt and precautions are taken.

TBH my concern would be for some driver to see the quad out of the corner of their eye, totally overreact and cause an accident because they got confused. I like the Rotor Riot stuff when they go somewhere interesting and fly but yet another building dive or power loop around some part of an office block doesn't really do much for me. I much prefer FinalGlideAUS and Charpu solo videos as there is a sense of pleasure in their flying, RR are trying too hard for it to feel like fun.

I guess Monster Energy gives an F about the brand, the people watching, and actually understand the dynamics of being in the spotlight. I absolutely agree that the train video by nurk was above and beyond rr bridge dive. That's what more teams like rr need to be doing. I love flying all kinds of drones and at times i push the limits like hight restrictions but i would never put someone else's life in danger for my fun or Finacial gain. That's low, greedy and desperate and says more about the person then the hobby, Imho. With all the places to go in the world and all the things you can do with a race quad, especially with pro pilots like them, Chad could have definitely thought of a better way to get noticed. Just my opinion! Thx for letting me share! Michael

I live in the city of the bridge.. We barely have anywhere to fly with the current regulations, and get enough crap trying to fly safely.. Crossing the line like this doesn't help things for us. It seems fairly irresponsible to make a trip up here, do something stupid that has a negative impact on the locals, and flee the country.

but tasers are not being threatened by the faa or other major government organizations and the main stream media targets all drones as being super dangerous and most people believe that crap. on the other hand a lot more people know tasers are not deadly in most cases. nobody has died from a quad yet but its just a matter of time till someone gets hit in the head by a quad going 100mph+ and dies and it causes mass hysteria.

I'm on the side of it's cool but there's always a chance something can go wrong, what if he missed his mark and the quad hit a car windscreen?, it might not punch through, but could be startling enough to cause an accident. As they say it's not if, it's when.

Without Rotor Riot, the business wouldn't be what it is. I don't condone the bridge diving in Canada but I expect Rotor Riot to do these kinds of things whether legal or not. I just don't want average joe FPV pilot trying to do the same thing, much riskier than the rotor riot guys doing it. I agree with one of the comments below that the public shouldn't have to unknowingly bear the risk of an FPV pilots stunt. A mini quad going 60+mph would hurt someone pretty bad but is little risk to buildings, structures or vehicles. Bruce, as always, you are the voice of reason in this hobby, keep it up!

I haven't commented on the video until now. I do not get into the facebook drama. Thanks for the commentary Bruce! I would appreciate it if that level of risk was not taken again by such a high profile group. Our community may be able to defend accidents and injuries by amateurs, but not by seasoned, high profile, "veterans" in my opinion. I would like to safely fly freely for the rest of my days instead of being potentially fpv handcuffed (choo choo) because of the unsafe acts of others. I would also like our community / "industry" leaders to consider human lives as something for everyone to take as more important than views, clicks, likes, shares, subscribes, thumbs ups, and tweets. Usually I am of the opinion to let others do what they want. This rotor riot act was just a bit overboard. I love flitetest and rotor riot. I''m just hoping that rotor riot doesn't literally ruin the hobby. I have exactly no worries that flitetest ever will. I will continue watching both brands vids. I will consider buying flitetest products. I will not purchase any rotor riot gear. I have working kk2 boards and f4 boards btw.

I agree 100% with you Bruce! I have been in this Hobby for many years (even owned & operated a retail Hobby shop late 80's to mid 90's) and I for one do not want any MORE regulation forced on this hobby because people do things that "COULD" have had a horrible different outcome. I remember when I started back into this hobby and ran across a video a few years back showing a quad flying WAY ABOVE the clouds I just could not believe what I was watching even though I thought it was really awesome & would love to the same thing the first thought that came to mind was " Man this is NOT SAFE " any planes flying at that Alt could fly right into that quad and the next thing ya know they would be outlawed or severely RESTRICTED!! and I left that as a comment too-and what do you know maybe 2-3 years later BAM!!!! Drone registration!!!!!-next they are in the news- should they be outlawed Blah Blah Blah.... well you know how the story goes!!! No one person for WHAT EVER REASON should do something that would maybe injure some one or jeopardize this wonderful Hobby for the rest of us after all it was the Freedom to invent and fly that brought me into this Hobby many many years ago!!!!
