"That's No Way to Get Along" (by Rev. Robert Wilkins) performed by the Piedmont Blūz Acoustic Duo of Valerie & Benedict Turner (piedmontbluz.com) on the front steps of the Mississippi John Hurt Museum, complete with sound effects from cicadas and an occasional breeze. This arrangement was inspired by Guy Davis' playing of the song.

The original song is called prodigal son by Rev. Robert Wilkins. It was also covered by The Rolling Stones in the 60s.
@PiedmontBluz
@PiedmontBluz Год назад
Actually, Wilkins did "That's No Way to Get Along" first, and changed the lyrics to create "Prodigal Son" after becoming a minister. Bands like the Rolling Stones covered this and many other pieces created by the early Blues masters. I've always preferred the originals. Something about the Rock & Roll covers always sounded a bit off.
@DerekCastleSr.
@DerekCastleSr. Год назад
@@PiedmontBluz good info! I agree about the original recordings too. I do give the Stones and a few other bands in the 60s credit for working to bring the blues guys into the mainstream and getting their music in front of the world. There are several greats that would probably be buried in obscure history without some British kids in the 60s. Of course I am omitting Led Zeppelin who did them so dirty. Zeppelin owes Willie Dixon alone millions of dollars. The song sounds great and it’s so refreshing to hear someone doing traditional music correctly

I discovered this song on RU-vid being performed by S. Grossman and C. Marsh a couple of weeks ago. Since then I've been checking out many different performances on RU-vid, including originals by Rev. Robert Wilkins. There are a lot of good versions. But I keep coming back to your's. Maybe it's that Valerie's voice is so well suited for this song. Maybe it's Ben's percussion that makes it distinctive. And, of course, Valerie's fingerpicking is simply wonderful. It's all excellent. Thank you.

They suggest that musicians perform at other local venues, build a following, and then possibly attract the attention of IHE. That's great advice for a local band but I'm not so sure that it's a viable game plan for out-of-towners. This is how the business works though, and it's a real stumbling block!
