Can you imagine the outrage if a modern team signed a kicker with a career percentage of 62%?
@logan_nowicki
@logan_nowicki 5 лет назад
@Matt Pizzano yeah, that's kind my point really. We have such high expectations now it seems like we expect too much from certain position players. I'd go out on a limb and say Cody Parkey would out kick this guy, meanwhile some like Adam Vinetari wasn't able to win MVP despite being the greatest kicker of all time

@Boba Fett No doubt about that, but doesn't help that they were out of shape and toe punching it.

You guys do realize you can't even touch the long snapper. Back then teams would maul him, and get in the backfield before the placeholder had the ball. Kicking is much easier now from that rule change. Which I admit is only 5 or 6 years old

I feel like some of the issue is that almost anytime a wr does something the qbs stats get boosted as well, so you can look at it and say without the qb this wr wouldn’t be as good. Don’t get me wrong though I don’t understand how a wr hasn’t gotten an mvp either.

For those who haven't seen old games, this straight on kicking style was standard until teams gradually started bringing in foreign players to kick "soccer style" in the late '60s. By 1982, Mark Moseley was one of the only kickers using this style left in the league.
@marvinschmid
@marvinschmid 4 года назад
@Matt Pizzano And that's good. I can't believe anyone ever thought it was a good idea to kick a ball that way. How could anyone ever think you could have any control over the ball that way?
@marvinschmid
@marvinschmid 4 года назад
@Matt Pizzano Strength is really easy. In football (or soccer as you call it), many small children tend to kick the ball with the toebox, because they don't have the strength to kick it properly. It's one of the earliest things taught in football to only kick it with the toebox if you really can't get to the ball otherwise.

Actually, if you want to get it right, Pete Gogolak was the first major pro "soccer-style" kicker (drafted in 1964 by the Buffalo Bills, later playing for the NY Giants.) Morten Andersen (the correct spelling of his surname) was a 4-year old toddler in Denmark at that point. By the 70's, soccer-style kickers slowly replaced "straight-on" kickers, with kickers like Garo Yepremian, Toni Linhart, and Chester Marcol leading the evolution of the kicking game in the NFL. A final note on that, however, is that the long-standing record for longest field goal was (until a few years ago) a 63-yard kick made by Tom Dempsey, a straight-on kicker with half a foot and half an arm. Additionally, the old "straight-on" kickers were themselves an evolution from what is virtually an unpracticed art form today - drop kicking. Drop kickers had no holders (an advantage in terms of added blocking), they simply set up in a formation similar to a punt formation and artfully kicked the ball after dropping it to the ground. Doug Flutie's last scoring play as an NFL player some years ago was a drop-kick extra point for the Patriots - and it was the first score via a drop kick in some 70 years. The evolution of placekicking is about accuracy. Drop kickers could be better protected, but accuracy was a greater issue. Straight-on kicking with a holder sacrificed protection, but increased accuracy to a certain degree. Soccer-style kicking with a holder suffers again in terms of blocking, and some soccer-style kickers have difficulty hitting from longer range, but the vast majority of kickers on the list of most accurate in league history are soccer-style. Eventually, the distance record Tom Dempsey once held fell to soccer-style kickers - but it took about 40 years to happen.

The AFL has given the NFL a couple great punters in recent years, and in an ironic twist, there's been a movement bringing American football talent to the AFL. As would be expected, the Americans are encountering resistance, but are learning to adapt to the AFL game and might soon be a factor. And the return of the drop kick to the NFL? I wouldn't mind seeing a drop kicker in the game, if only for all the possibilities it brings to life. Personally, I would love to see a real throwback to the old days of the NFL, when virtually all players filled multiple roles on the team. On many teams in the *really* old days, the kicker was usually the quarterback. Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins (the team that won't change their racially insensitive name) was at one time a leader on both career lists for passing *and* punting, and the immortal Jim Thorpe at one time was paid to appear at games to demonstrate his considerable skills as a drop kicker after his playing days had ended.

@@stone1andonly Drop kicking is dead for a good reason. Even today the gamble of losing accuracy may be taken for the protection, but the act itself is improbable. The ball shape slowly moved from a rounder, close even to an egg with even sides, to the ovaloid it is today with the sharper tips, with the growing use of the forward pass and changing of the way the game was played. And so, dropping the ball and having it bounce in a fashion that is predictable enough to be useful as a scoring method is such a small chance, it just won't happen

Because if a wide receiver put a monsters numbers of receiving yards and touchdown like rendy moss did in 2007 season it means that the QB (brady in this case) will have a monsters passing yards and touchdown, so at the end the QB will win the mvp. A kicker or runnig back or defensive player are not Not dependent on a quarterback like a wide receiver so they have a much better chance than him to win the mvp.

Attended several games at RFK that season. That place was a dump! But it was, hands down, the most fun I've ever had as a fan. It held about 55,000, and you sat right on top of the game. Ticket prices were such that it was a diverse crowd -- professionals, workers, white, black, young, old, you name it, all cheering for the 'Skins. Downtown DC. And that team was pretty dominant, on its way to its first Super Bowl win, so that was great, too.

Marcus Allen should’ve been MVP. Led the league in TD’s and helped the Raiders win more games in 82 (8-1) than they did in a full schedule in 81 (7-9). He was THE difference in that team. As a life long fan of the Dallas Cowboys since 1970, I pull for my team no matter what. But there comes a time when you have to put team Fandom a side and recognize greatness. Mark Moseley was one of the best. And one of the last straight line kickers. I hated Washington at this time. It's was the era of "The Diesel" John Riggins. Dallas and Washington both played old school, Smash Mouth football. Dallas has TD, Tony Dorsett. Philadelphia was on the down trend and nobody heard anything from the Giants since Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry left New York. Of course a couple of years later, New York was a dominant force toward the end of the 1980s. But from 1992 until 1988, the Washington Redskins, led by "The Hogs", Washington won several Super Bowls in the 80s and early 90s. Many of those games came from Mark Moseley.

I met Moseley at a game when I was a kid. I didn't know who he was, but I saw people taking pictures with him. He shook my hand, but my dad who was an older fan than I was, was up getting food at the concessions. I remember him coming back and I explained how I was confused about why people were taking pictures with some kicker... He knew immediately it was Moseley. lol

The MVP award is given to the player who contributed _the most_ to his team's success ... great season by a wide receiver depends on the quarterback having a great year ... running backs depend of offensive linemen ... so if the kicker is the reason the team is successful, then the kicker is the single most valuable player ...

You question LT's '86 MVP? WOW, You must be the best player that ever lived to think he didn't deserve it that year!
@johnliberty3647
@johnliberty3647 4 года назад
I gotta agree with you, LT was the absolute best football player of all time. any position. He used to destroy my favorite all time player Joe Jacoby. Still upset at that 1986 season when he blew up the league. That was the year he went from best pass rusher of all time to best player of all time. Without Lawrence Taylor the Redskins go 14-2 and the Giants go 12-4 that year.

It’s not career mvp or best player it’s most valuable. He was sure as hell valuable during the regular season seen as they may not have even made the playoffs without him.

Straight on kickers never had the accuracy of the sidewinders but as a Redskin Moseley was consistently great especially when the game was on the line look up percentages of made field goals and you find Mosley near the top year over year

@johnnyraymond429
@johnnyraymond429 5 лет назад
@@inthemoment8791 He was not the best kicker, he just had one fluke season. He finished 23rd and 17th in fg% in the two years preceding his MVP season, and 17th and 8th in the two years after. If he had played a full 16 game season, he wouldn't have made over 95% of his kicks. There were other players that benefited from the small sample size. Wes Chandler was on pace to set what would have been at the time the record for receiving yards in a season. If he played a full season, I doubt he would have continued to average over 21 yards per reception. Moseley just had a lucky year.

Johnny Raymond a lucky year? I understand that success like that isn’t always sustainable, but one does not get by (or win an mvp) purely through luck
