Rudy is a great not because of football. It’s great because a guy that struggled scholastically due to dyslexia worked hard and ended up at one of the best universities in the country and inspired members of his family to get a college education.
@@blancobasnett for sure, it’s a movie not a documentary. It’s still possibly one of the closest to the real story movies Ik of but that’s not saying too much.
Literally no one cares about some stupid guy going to some random Catholic school before committing securities fraud. They like it because they think it's true, and it's bullshit.
The players didn't put the jerseys down on Devine's desk, but a couple of players did go into Devine's office and requested that Rudy suit up. Apparently, Devine wasn't resistant, but embraced the idea as well as one of the assistant's in the room. There were people in the crowd supposedly chanting Rudy, but it wasn't the entire stadium, and he did make the sack and they did carry him off the field. I'm sure it was in good fun, but I don't think it was mocking Rudy....it was celebrating how this one hundred and nothing, 5 foot nothing nobody made a great play to end the game.
Nooo, he said when some players carried Rudy off it was for fun, NOT a joke. And nobody was making fun of him. Joe was actually pretty complimentary about Rudy. I don't see any problems here.
@Mrraugut he should make fun of the little idiot. Dude committed securities fraud and lied his ass off because it let's him charge for speaking engagements.
Seaton response was the best. ‘Oh look at me…Can’t share the stage…” haaa! Was waiting for Joe to pop out any second And say “what did you say?” Makes me chuckle. Thanks
Listen to Joe’s comments, then listen to them talk about his comments 11 years later. People hear what they want to hear Joe said “I’m not saying it was a joke” To have him carried off. Them commenting “Joe said it was a joke”
Exactly, Joe said nothing bad about Rudy. He praised him between 1:02 to 1:07. He just pointed out what was inaccurate about the movie and in another video Joe hinted he's stayed in touch with Rudy, who acknowledges its just a movie.
@@MrraugutWho CARES?????? Joe is an idiot. He wants all the limelight for himself. What did it cost Joe Montana to grant Rudy a tiny amount of fame??? Absolutely NOTHING.
Even Rudy has said that was Hollywood. Also he said that there wasn't one friend who helped him and one janitor.. There were lots and lots but the put them all togethers in one or two characters. I just think it came off like Joe took a cheap shot. Its that Jock mentality where you have to be better than the next guy..
@@ashleywetherallno he didn't he just lifted the vale of bullshit, because people believe every movie they see when it's based on a true story. The operative word is based.
I believe Joe Cool. Montana has no reason to hype the Rudy story or to disparage it. All Joe did is give everyone a little reality check. and remind everyone that as always with sports movies there is a handful of script doctors punching up the script in order to make it as feel good as a feel good film could be to maximize box office success over the Christmas holidays. Mission accomplished, and Rudy should just be happy that he is a small footnote in a storied football team's long history.
He praised Rudy at 1:02. I've checked other interviews and Joe never badmouthed Rudy. He just dismissed inaccuracies and embellishments in the movie and that's it.
@jamesmckenzie7049 I have seen other videos of Notre Dame players from that team speaking about the Rudy movie. According to them, only half of the things that appeared in the movie were actually true. I can't blame Joe at all as long as he's telling the truth. Yes, Rudy they say he worked hard just like many other players. He got into the game on the last play and got the sack and they carried him off the field. Hollywood's portrayal of Rudy as a hero is not true. According to his teammates, the crowd did not chant his name and nobody gave him their jersey. It did not appear real to me as I watched that film as Hollywood movies based on a real story are often only half true.
@jamesmckenzie7049I don’t think he meant nobody gave their jerseys I think he meant that not everybody did like in the movie. Probably a few people did and joe wasn’t one of them so he didn’t see it happen.
@jamesmckenzie7049 I'm not sure what tone or content we would expect. For my part, Montana simply said what I've known from many other sources. What isn't being said here is that the depiction of players laying their jerseys on Devine's desk because Rudy didn't get scheduled, then the crowd shame-chanting a reluctant Devine into letting him play, well, that's the REAL mean spirited thing. None of that is accurate, and Devine (RIP) felt betrayed by the film for having painted him that way. He always backed Rudy, and never wavered, and that's a fact. I'd be more inclined to wink at the inaccuracies if they didn't smear a true ND legend in the process--Dan Devine.
Let me fill in some other details for you......Michael Ohr from the movie "Blindside" Didn't just start playing football in high school, Pitcher Jim Morris from the movie "The Rookie" didn't just walk in to an open pitching practice, or throw a ball past a highway speed sign. Vince Pappale from the movie "Invincible" only recorded 9 reception yards in two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also wasn't a walk on, he was invited. And last but not least folks.....Rubin "Hurricane" Carter did actually murder 3 people in a bar. A simple google search will confirm all these facts. It's called "Artistic License" and Hollywood can make anyone a hero if they want too.
To be fair, the Vince Papale part isnt really saying much.. They never claimed him to be some "great receiver" in the movie. Just a guy who was quick, n was just good enough to play special teams.
some characters are fictionalized for dramatic purposes .. no representation to actual persons, living or dead, is intended .. objects in mirror are larger than they appear.. all disclaimers .. folks please use your common sense!
Moneyball: The 2002 Oakland A’s success was due to the performance of players acquired through scouting, including the Cy Young award winner and AL MVP. Billy Beane acquired a few role players who absolutely did not tip the scales to win games. The A’s already had an ace pitching staff not mentioned in the movie whatsoever. Beanes moves were overblown to almost comedic levels.
The fact of the matter is both stories can be true at the same time... some people were probably teasing Rudy (jerks) while others were probably appreciating the moment...
Hollywood dresses things up their way, to make movies more "entertaining", according to their ways of doing things. An accurate portrayal of the subjects would be better. I always wondered why "Rudy" was called "Rudy". There were many kids in the family, they all had the same last name, and they still call him "Rudy", and he was the only 1 who was called that name LOL? Well, it made for a good story, but I always knew it was not very accurate. I believe Montana's take on it, he was there, we were not!
That's why Hollywood always uses the term 'based on a true story' or 'inspired by' and such. They never say all the events in a movie are accurate of a true story or real life events.
Yeah, but Montana has also made a point of “setting the record straight” in other interviews as well. Why? Good grief, just let it go. There’s clearly something that gets under Montana’s skin whenever Rudy’s name comes up. It’s just weird.
The only thing I think about when I watch the film "Rudy" is that actor Jon Favreau was cast in the wrong movie about Notre Dame. He should have starred in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
Most of Rudy was embellished. He had no older brother, there was no Fortune "the black guy", he had no older brother, he didn't work in a steel mill, he worked at a power plant. The movie made no mention of his military service prior to going to college meaning that he would have been awarded the GI Bill.
I heard Joe claim on another show that the real Rudy's dad was NOT actually Ned Beatty. Boom! There is a director's cut of this movie finally being released this fall. Go Rudy!
Oh and one other minor detail...Rudy was the oldest of all his siblings, something the screen splash at the end hints at when it mentions all his younger siblings going to college. That means he was not a kind of picked on, beat down kid brother by his elders. There were no elders.
Did joe ever get a movie made about his struggles in life.... Errrrrr Nope.. I think its just a bit of Jock Jealousy.. Rudy became an inspirational speaker encouraging people to believe in themselves. Joe comes off as the opposite..
The dude was a national championship in college then 4 SBs, is considered one of the all time greats, married a model he met on a commercial shoot, and is generationally wealthy. Rudy is still milking a largely fabricated decades old movie . What exactly is Montana jealous of here?
@@patrickthomas8890 Actually Rudy is the first to admit to the inconstancies of the film. He's a motivational speaker, encouraging others to go for there dreams, he actually talks though what the film gets wrong and how many others , not featured helped him on his way. But Joe got his dream and some of ours. But I find the haves are always a bit jealous of the have nots.. But Joe to his credit has also done a lot for others. I just think that he should have learned. That if you can't say something positive about someone who has done you no wrong. Best to say nothing at all.
@@ashleywetherall Didn't sound dismissive to me. At 1:02 he praises Rudy. I think the guys on the show have also manipulated it a bit to misportray Joe as a jerk.
As a 49er I love and admire Rudy movie it’s one of those movies that makes you appreciate football. Joe “cool” is still Joe “cool” unlike that other Joe “cool” wannabe
I admire RUDY and I painted him and gave him my honor cause I knew a guy from my hometown in Texas who played for Notre Dame and never played much cause was a chicano and Rudy played and got his Fame.
These commentators wish they could be as committed as Rudy or as gifted as Montana. But they aren’t so they sit and blab all day and stir up controversy.
Maybe you guys live in fantasy and joe lives in reality. Typical media, looking for an angle. Make a living on stirring the pot. If u don’t like the answer, maybe u shud not ask the question.
And also it was dan devine who came up with the idea to dress Rudy up for the final game, butin the movie, dan devine doesn't want rudy to play the final game.
The NFL conducted a poll from fans on the nicest QBs to meet. Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and John Elway were rated the worst. Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and Brett Favre were rated the best.
Joe wasn’t disrespectful. He just made a comment. He said they basically gave all seniors the opportunity to make a play or two during the season. He said Rudy worked hard and was carried off the field.
I don't even care if Rudy was offsides, seriously, I don't. Look at the big picture! A walk-on who went through everything he went through getting to play for the FIRST time in the last little bit of time in the last game of his senior year!
That's a little extreme. Haha. Rudy didn't get handed his small bit of playing time and recognition with his team. He worked very, very hard for it. Even Joe Montana said so. That doesn't sound like a participation trophy if you ask me.
I always thought the end when the stadium was chanting his name wasn't very believable anyways and frankly unnecessary to the story. As for who carried him off the field, how could more than 3 do that in the first place? That part sounds like the movie was accurate.
Joe probably thinks like everyone that went to ND In that era…. It was an embarrassment to their alma mater, lots of great came out of ND and the world talks about Rudy 😂
I wish they would keep true life stories true to life- they are so much better that way- it would have been a better movie, as it was it seemed so fake that you didn't know what was true.
Typical pundits. Never played the game. Talk about a walk on. How about Matt Turman at Nebraska 1994. He started at QB for the 1st half against an undefeated Kansas St at KSU. They also won
"Rudy" is a great true story, where they took slight liberties telling it. Montana is a loud mouthed jerk trying to pull down a fellow teammate, of all things.
I love how a bunch of nobodies are making fun of the second greatest QB of all time for telling the truth, and if Joe Cool were to hear this he wouldn't give a damn bc he's Joe fucking Montana
@@richarddouglashelms6376 7 SB's, compared to Joe: 3 Won 6 SB MVP'S: Compared to Joe: 3 Has way better stats than Joe, has more longevity and success than Joe, and unlike Joe Montana, Brady never lost his starting spot to his backup like Montana, don't ever disrespect Brady without thinking, you really thought you had something huh, look at you quiet, bitchless cause you too worried about hating on another man, it's sounds beach as the French in France would say
He’s full of crap! I saw an interview with the DT that played next Rudy on that final play. He said the Jersey turn in did happen, but not by the whole team. It was a CB
Bruh.. Joe.. you're a football icon. Let the dude have his moment. He literally had one moment to shine and you shit on it? For what reason? I get he's just answering the question but c'mon dude sounded a bit petty downplaying it.
Actually Joe Montana is talking out of his a$$ about the jersey scene. It was only, according to the players who were actually there a couple of guys who offered their jerseys to coach Devine so he'd allow Rudy in that game. So maybe over embellished, but it did happen. Just be quiet Joe if you don't know what you're talking about
It’s sad how much these guys feel the need to cling to a happier version of reality, even if it’s not true. And Montana didn’t say it was a joke, so their characterization was wrong too. Sorry to break it to you, but life isn’t a fairy tale. It’s more nuanced than that... and it STILL is exciting and inspiring. I don’t even like Joe Montana. It’s just annoying to see men who have an influential platform behaving like boys, living in fantasy.
Rudy came to my school and told us point blank that the movie was fictionalized. He also told us, look at me, I'm a no talent nothing from nowhere and I played d1 ball at the most prestigious university in its hey day and you can realize your dreams to. Which we related with because most of us were no talents definitely from no where. Joe cool hasn't done jack with his platform except be bourge af. The words came out your mouth Joe tell us how you really feel
Calm down ; such babies, Rudy said it himself it was a movie a lot of this was fiction. It was a movie …. Montana said the truth you guys blew this up shaming Joe put him on the defensive that’s wrong of you… Sean Astin was telling about this movie you didn’t want to hear it …. Covering your ears and acting childish to a guest answering truthfully of the questions on being asked …
This is why I love Joe Montana. Give this interview with his former center Jesse Sapolu a listen and the story he tells at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1280">21:20</a> tells it all. Joe got sacked 8x vs. a Philly defense that featured a young Reggie White...wait until you hear what Joe said when he popped his head in the O-line room the next day. Joe story starts at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1280">21:20</a> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sZH4Ofy4KIM.html
It's a movie. Of course they are going to embellish some things. Rudy still worked his butt off for the team, but it'd be a pretty boring movie if it was just him studying and showing up to practice everyday. Even the real Rudy has come out and said the movie embellished facts. It's a fun movie, everyone relax. I don't see why Joe doesn't just show some class and say the same thing. "It's a movie that took some liberties, but Rudy is a great guy and the movie was great." It's really that simple. He seems kind of petty talking about it the way he does.
BOO HOO (*SNIFFLE, SNIFFLE)! Of all the storylines dyslexia (RUDY), doesn't compare to autism (RAIN MAN)! Joe Montana doesn't SUGAR-COAT!! Neither should anyone!
Im pretty sure most people already knew that stuff even before Joe said it. Cuz it had been talked about by other players before that. But still, Joe is a dick lol. Rudy is the man

Seriously, why the fuck did Joe Montana have to say anything?? Yes, we know it’s a movie and dramatic license is often taken, but to sit and actually take the time to point out all the flaws of certain scenes seems mean spirited. Why can’t he just let Rudy have his movie? I love the film and don’t give a flyin-fuck if the jersey scene never happened, or why he was carried off! It’s still a great story!
The biggest "Hollywood Treatment" in the movie Rudy was not what was embellished but what was left out. OK, Great movie, insprational story about persevering and continuing to follow your dream against insurmountable odds. But, movie added things that just weren't true. As a 1977 Notre Dame grad, I was not only at the 1975 game but on campus 4 years living the Notre Dame experience. OK.... What was left out was that although he was undersized and lacking major college talent, Rudy was a 27 year old man in that 1975 game. He was born in 1948 and joined the Navy and worked in a powerplant years before Holy Cross JC then Notre Dame. The movie would lose some of its message if Rudy was shown as a mature man instead of naive kid as effectively portrayed by Sean Astin. Hollywood juggling the facts and outright eliminating a crucial one.

He’s just telling the true story which seems to hurt peoples feelings. The vast majority of “true story” movies are almost total fiction. It’s a great movie though, which is what matters. Like they say…don’t let the truth spoil a good story
Nah, he’s just telling the truth. Hollywood will elaborate and lie to spin a hero. There’s already enough fakeness going around, why are you blaming Joe as a narcissist for calling out movie producers?
Spoken to a numerous example of players during the 70’s-90’s…. Little Joe was always looking for recognition. A “works hard” normal showed him up during a national match… One has been three times accused of sexual assault. One quietly relives their moment in history….. I wonder who is the most noble…….
I've read several stories citing montana as being a dick for more than one reason. Obviously, one of those reasons is him trashing the movie Rudy. Yeah, it's Hollywood. we know it's likely exaggerated. That's what they do. When he said the teammates that carried Rudy off the field as a joke instead of celebrating with him was messed up. Especially when another teammate that played with Rudy said that they were genuinely happy for Rudy because he was so excited to play. Idk just that and reading other stories about him is upsetting because you think he'd have more class.
Did you not listen to what he ACTUALLY said?? He clearly stated, "I WON'T say it was a joke but playing around." He also said, "He worked his butt off to get there and do the things he did!" Telling it straight is NOT "trashing/being petty" people. Then again, it's even more perpetuated by the guys here making the same misconception and you'd think THEY'D pay better attention as they have their own show. Talk about over-sensitive.
Hello Baby Joe it's a movie & any & all movies that r based on something is never exactly like the whole truth. Name a real movie that stuck to the exact truth even if its real. Thats why its a movie. Joe is jealous cause focus isnt on him. The big picture that baby joe dont get is how much of an impact the movie has made on young kids to never give up & hard work really can pay off in any career choice not just sports. Yet baby joe focus on the spot like not on him.
Joe Montana sees him as a sub par football player....and he was....and that's how he sees him. Can't blame him, it's not an inspiration to a guy like him....it's funny to him. It's inspiring to average Joe's, rightfully, but not the greatest Joe lol
Hollywood makes me sick! They will do ANTHING the have to to make a story more exciting including lying and making up false situations in order to “sell more tickets”! I don’t know about you but, I feel as though they have NO RESPECT for the general public and have to lie in order to make more money! Hearing how they embellished the movie “The Blind Side” really pisses me off! If a story isn’t good enough to STAND ON IT’S OWN MERITS, then don’t tell the story or make the movie! It’s called HONESTY Hollywood!
