The $140 PC I Thought Was Impossible to Build | OzTalksHW

That PC had a lot of potential, but the i3 530 and GT 1030 I originally had in there was a slap in the face. I finally upgraded it, but the masterpiece didn’t come without modifications and deal hunting. I’ll be honest, I didn’t think this was possible, especially since this entire journey has been anything but smooth; but I’m happy to report that the computer functions and is pretty good for the price...and that I kinda owe Lenovo an apology. So here it is: The $140 PC I Thought Was Impossible to Build.

Lenovo's can be hit and miss, sometimes you can also get away with turning on CSM and disabling secure boot, got a few AMD cards to boot that way (just make sure the bios doesn't get reset). I am also finding alot of second and third gen thinkcentres are having a lot of bitrot problems too with their bioses. This ain't research, this just trial and error :P. P.S I also learned you are probably one of the most (if not the most) patient and calm man in the world. If I had that many problems with a PC it would be Thanos'd out of existence.
@OzTalksHW
@OzTalksHW 4 года назад
I've seen soooo many 2nd and 3rd gen core i Thinkcentres on ebay for pretty cheap, and I'm tempted to pick a few up. They seem to have better compatibility than the older model that I tried here. I never tried those methods to enable AMD cards but I'll give it a shot next time. And thank you Bryan lol I've had my fair share of Thanos experiences with this PC

It is so uncommon these days that two channels working in similar topis and business don't hate, make fake wars or just tell bulls** about each other to gain more viewers. Instead of this you can comment, suggest, share with your ideas and experience and do it in so nice and professional way, that it is rarely seen, especially here. That's why i absolutely enjoy your work and i'll be your viewer and supporter always - hats off guys, real men, not envious, brainless kiddos!!!

With all the difficulty finding PC parts these days, I'm surprised you were able to get your hands on as much stuff as you did. I'm slowly planning my first build in years, and I'm seeing a lot of stuff showing I could get a pretty badass setup for a surprisingly reasonable price, especially now that I know how to focus a build (this will be, bluntly, a gaming PC without the need for CPU-heavy - or thread-heavy, I suppose - tasks). I can see doing this build as very much an enthusiast endeavor, with all the work you had to put into it, or the beginnings of a pretty gnarly sleeper (though there'd be a lot of case-modding needed for cooling) and you did a helluva job getting it done. Thanks!

I can't express how much I wish I would have found this video about 2 months ago. I'm also a firm believer in reusing equipment whenever possible. I got my hands on a Thinkserver TS140 and have been stumbling through the very same process. This would have helped me immensly with the pinout process for all power and lighting issues (Really my first reuse build project). I have the same power supply, and it looks like the interior of these cases is identicle. Nice build! I have a sleeper workstation build in progress, and I'm hoping for similar results. Awesome job!

Love your persistence, liked and subbed for your chill vibe. I did the same thing with a Lenovo M93P SFF for my 8 year old a few months ago, I put 8Gb DDR3, an i5 quad and GTX1030 in - job done. The big weakness with any office Lenovo will be the PSU. I'm in the UK so prices are very different (cost me £250 total) but she's got a decent machine that can play most modern titles pretty well in low/medium at 1080p. I think the problem here was so many of the OEM matched components were missing in the original machine. The best thing about older Lenovo's - the firm do keep a lot of the old specs on-line and the community forums are very good too. Research :)

Nice work! Lenovo prebuilts are pretty tricky to work with. I also have one (although it has a Sandy Bridge CPU instead) and moving it into a new case was a bit of a challenge for me since it was my first time doing so. One specific specific with that model (that you probably didn't have yourself) that I run into was that it has a proprietary wired temperature sensor that runs from motherboard into the case and you absolutely have to take it out of that old case (takes some force) into the new one. Without it the PC will think that the CPU is overheating and it will run the fan at full speed and cause some other issues as well.

G'day Oz, Sometimes getting old parts to work together can be frustrating, but Kudos to you for persevering, I have been doing a couple of projects lately too, one is Modifying the Cooler Shroud on a Sapphire RX480 Nitro OC to fit a Dell with i7-3770, the Sata Data Cable sockets are right behind the GPU Cooler 👿 on the M/B, I can use 2 Right Angle Sata Cables but want a 3rd to add a SSD to the H/D & can still use the DVD Burner, it came out pretty good considering I am as shaky as someone with Parkinson's Disease, So a Dremel in my hand can get all sorts of an outcome, the other project is a XP PC for Retro Gaming with my old Games on Disc, like your build it has a i7-780 but is in a GA-H55-D2H with 4GB@1333MHz RAM (all free), & GTX680SOC Windforce5 ($100AUD), it will have a 120GB SSD, I won't need a Hard drive as my old XP PC only had a 120GB IDE H/D with plenty of room, it was a C2D8400, 4GB 800MHzRAM & GTX260 so the 'new' PC will be a big upgrade 😏

Heya Oz, thanks for the heads-up about the PSU motherboard adapter, I didn't know those existed before you mentioned it! I have an HP Compaq 8200 I've looked into getting a good GPU in the GTX 1650 series (no external PCI-E connector required) b/c I'm one of those few that still cares about PhysX supported games like the Batman ones, or Borderlands series. Thanks to you I upgraded the HP 320W PSU to an EVGA 500W that I could couple with a GTX 1060 6GB that needed a 6-pin PCI-E power connector. I also now have the option of putting in a more power-hungry GPU in the future without issues :D All the best man, your vids are great!

My first gaming PC was a HP Z600 with 24Gb DDR3 ECC, 2 Xeon X5675s, and a GTX 1070. I still have and it rocks at gaming, all together I got it done for around around $315 of profit. Deal hunting was key. Got the Z600 for $150 on ebay with a 2TB HDD and 128gb Intel SSD, sold misc parts not needed like DVD drive for about $15, bought 3 pcs for $35 with various parts (including the 1070) off Letgo sold all the parts minus the 1070 for around $450. Yes you're reading that properly. Used the computer for 2 years now and now it sits in my office, it rocks as a PC still! Don't game on it as much since I used the leftover money plus some to build a new Ryzen 3600 build with a 2070super.

Oz I need help. I bought a compaq 6305 and it needs a graphics card but the heat sync on the motherboard is limiting the space. Where can I find help?

For sure, those cases are cramped as hell man, (only downside to using refurbs from the big manufacturers) and the i-Generation of intel ran hot! Gotta go next-generation for overclocking. (Sandybridge in particular, like my 2400K or the i7 version) overclock like a beast on air, and run cool!

Can you do this to a optiplex 790? im stuck on what motherboard to buy because the motherboard mounts are custom sized.

You should try some LGA 1366 builds, I've built a Dell T3500 with a Xeon X5675, Nvidia GTX 980, Corsair PSU, Crucial 500 GB SSD, it works very well, and yes, you really need to do your research on these OEM pre-built computers as when I was upgrading the cooling with newer fans, I ended up needing an adapter, Not a big deal as the Arctic Fans and new thermal paste really dropped the thermals pretty low.

Nice video! I've been doing a decent amount of benchmarking, and one of the reasons warzone gets so laggy is the hard drive. I think the models just don't fully lag, and it causes a ton of stuttering, at least in the initial stages of the game. Also, I love the 770 meta! Just got one for $40 on hardwareswap, but it's one of the massive windforce ones, so it doesn't fit into my case for my upcoming build, and I don't have the balls to take a hacksaw to it haha.
@OzTalksHW

The 770s are such solid choices nowadays and they're so cheap! I agree - I think the stuttering was a combination of the 8GB RAM and the spinning disk

I have one of these machines that I had bought a few years ago. a little slow now but it is an i5. Going to upgrade to the gtx 1050 ti 4gb and add 8gb of ddr3 ram but was wondering if you know of a good ssd that would work with this machine or should I just go with and external ssd? Want to use this machine for streaming and running liftoff drone simulator on my 4k TV... Any thoughts? Thanks again as this would be a much better option than buying a 1k machine which this option would save me 700.00.

To clean the board if your out of other supplies, green palmolive or green dawn are safe. Dont use any other flavors as the additives will corrode your board. It goes with out saying 110% make sure your board is dry. Use heat or wind, dabbing dry wont reach all spots, although that might speed things up.

I think I understand what you are going for here and whilst an SSD would be an good thing to speed things up abit more I'd still go for a beefier CPU-cooler. Not to overclock the system but for a cooler CPU making it not only alot more quiet but probably alot more stable aswell once the user-dust has begun setting in. You said it yourself that it will probably not getting to someone tech-savvy and they might think it's broken once the stock-cooler isn't performing after 6 months of no dusting the system. Just my two cents

Man, to be honest, I usually can't stand most tech RU-vidrs. With their forced emotion & over the top acting. You're like the chillest dude though, had to sub right away ahah. I love the budget videos too ✌️❤️ I've been flirting with the idea of upgrading a used office PC for awhile. I think it's time to finally pull the trigger!

I kind of feel the "research" here, and luckily I managed to get my upgrade done. Originally my school was getting rid of a bunch of core 2 duo computers, and I managed to snag 4 (somewhat to the reluctance of my tech teacher) before the outbreak. Well, after researching for days I found that this computer appeared to be consumer, just mass produced. But, of course there were some cut corners. The power supply seems obscure but so far holds up fine, and the motherboard was an Intel DG41RQ. Only 2 dimm slots, and already with 2gb of RAM. This didn't discourage me though. Since this was a consumer board I just had to research the most likely candidates for processors. Until I realized all of the Intel Archives had been wiped for their motherboards. So after more research on other sites I decided on a q9550 (much better than the old Pentium there). As soon as I was about to order, I was still researching just to be sure and found that this motherboard of mine was rev 5.0 or something like that, which means that a q9650 or xeons most likely might not work. On top of that, the q9550 wasn't strictly stated as able to work so I just had to take a chance. And also hope it worked on a 4 pin power connecter. Once it came, my grandfather (who uses a core 2 duo Mac) decided to try it, and the machine booted! I found 8gb of ddr2 on Ebay and ordered that as well. One was doa but I'm just glad the computer works. We just need to find a cheapo graphics card that used dx11 so we could use it as a minecaft/general pc.
