Mine did too... I still use the first gen Apple Pencil and I have an extra nib in the box. But the nib is pretty durable and it’s shown no sign of wearing down.. I think it should be noted that it also doesn’t have to recharge by sticking in the side of the iPad. It does come with a charging lightening cable to recharge through an outlet. Although charging through the iPad is much faster.

A few things: - When using the stylus, yes, palm rejection works. When in stylus mode like in Apple Notes, touching the screen doesn't draw or do anything other than move the image around and allow for pinch to zoom. Only the tip on the screen actually draws anything. - When the stylus is off, it doesn't do anything at all -- has no effect on the iPad screen. - Bluetooth and pairing isn't necessary -- it just works when it's on. The pen still fully works when the iPad is in airplane mode. - The iPad doesn't report on the battery level. I assume on a real Apple Pencil this is happening over the Bluetooth connection. - The stylus has no effect at all on an iPhone, my OnePlus 6 Android phone, or my Lenovo Flex 14 laptop (which has a touch-screen and a pressure sensitive Wacom pen for use on the screen.) Whatever tech Apple is using to detect the stylus is different than the way a Wacom stylus works. - If you don't need the tilt angle or pressure sensitivity, then this device will suit you perfectly. (Like if all you want to do is annotate or take notes.) - Viewers have reported that this works exactly the same way as the Logitech Crayon. So it is more accurate to say this is a clone of that device. - People have asked if the other side of the stylus works as an eraser -- and no, it doesn't. It is only the on/off button.

@frogz

also, having taken apart a stylus from a samsung note, the tip/nib/nub literally just pulls in and out with pliers, pressure sensitivity is acheived alot like a digital caliper with a capacitive patterned area of pcb that detects how far it is pushed in,in reactance to a waveform injected from 1 track to another few and the offset between them and i seriously need a generic wacom pen, the tablets themselves are worthless throwaway items in comparison, $2-3 for a tablet from goodwill or about $7 on ebay, $50 for a pen!

I can see my Apple pen battery from the battery widget that you can add to the left side of the home screen. The pen does come with a F-F lightning port adapter so you can charge with a cable. But plugging it straight into the iPad is useful if you want to charge the pen a couple minutes if it’s empty. If you’re a Windows user then the Microsoft apps work fine for me. OneDrive is good for PDFs because you can upload them from your computer and if you draw on them it will save it to the PDF.

if you are only going to read then it is much more relaxing for the eyes to buy reading boards designed for books and reading. the screen is too slow for anything else but very relaxing for the eyes. PocketBook Touch Lux 3 and similar.

I and my wife have been using this Apple Pencil alternative for a year and LOVE it -- no lag, precise, long-lasting charge, no nibs, easy USB recharge. Just no pressure feature, which is not a problem for our use. One thing: While it works just fine on my wife's two iPad and both our iPhones, on my 2017 iPad it doesn't work when using straight up at 90 degrees to the screen. It must be at a small angle, which is almost never a problem in the way I use it. I suspect this is because of the way that the iPad Pro screen is designed specifically for the official Apple Pencil.

Honestly from my own experience, I've found that Chinese knockoffs are actually pretty decent, if you know what you're looking for. Sure they make some crappy things, but that doesn't mean Walmart or Target doesn't either. Also the knockoffs are usually cheaper too.

The main reason for wearing gloves on active stylus tablets is to make it easier for your hand to glide over the surface, which improves drawing motions somewhat. In my experience the gloves don’t do anything to help palm rejection on passive styluses on capacitive screens anyway.

Adrian, great review. When you need to exchange for a new pencil tip, I'd strongly recommend unscrewing the cone that holds the tip, rather than the yanking approach. I could see a seam between the cone, & the barrel of the pencil. Yanking the tip sounds like a recipe for breakage. It's also possible that the cone itself can be gently pulled off. Also a great note on the pressure sensitivity. Won't make a great pencil for digital artists, w/o a graphics program that you can adjust pressure sensitivity in.

now that I have both, magical is absolutely the right word to use for the Apple Pencil. You pick it up, use it, draw with it, then dock it when you're done (and repeat & repeat). You never think about if the Apple Pencil is on, charged or connected - it just works. Not so w the knockoff - I was constantly managing if it was on so what you are "paying" for (by saving money) is having to devote precious brain cycles to manage "yet another device." With the Apple Pencil, it's a fully fluid, integrated experience - what I agree *is* magic!

This content doesn't feel out of place on the channel and quite happy to see more of it, I liked your Thinkpad screen one from a while back which was quite an eye opener. If you do end up looking for an Android alternative I'd recommend a Galaxy Tab S3. I bought one fairly cheap initially only as a monitor for my DJI drone but come to really like it, the tablet is fitted with a 10in 4:3 OLED high resolution screen, good speakers, microSD storage, LTE and the s-pen as well.

Thank you for this video! I just received an iPad Air 3rd gen, and I’ve been casting around trying to find a good, less expensive pencil. I’m an author, so the pressure sensitivity/art aspect isn’t important, but a good writing experience definitely is. If you picture it as using a pen instead of a pencil you really won’t miss the pressure stuff anyway ha! I’ll be giving this a shot, though I paused when you casually said your pen arrived a “few weeks” after you ordered it. I’ll need to recalibrate my patience level for that. I also subbed just because the first computer I bought on my own (summer job at age 13) was a Commodore 64, and the second one I bought was a C-128 so you are a worthy hero!

I bought my kids iPads for Christmas due to their sale on 7th gens on Black Friday 2019 (which has come in super handy due to school being shut down and their lessons online now). Ended up getting used Apple Pencils on Amazon Warehouse for about $60 each. The pressure sensitivity is way cool and it feels really nice in the hand to use. While dumb, having the built-in lightning charger is convenient because you don't have to worry about a cable or finding a USB charger. But dang, had I known that I could have saved $80 I would certainly have reconsidered. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'd recommend buying a UT658 USB tester that measures the amount of amps a USB device takes. Big Clive uses one. They're just a few bucks on eBay from China. I use it to work out how many milliamps devices use when charging, and I've discovered that some devices continue to charge even though their lights turn green to show they're charged (e.g. my Motorola S305 headphones).

It looks like the plastic around the tip might be removable? I see a seam, so I'd try and unscrew that first before pulling on your tip to replace it.

Ok, this is NOT a clone of the Apple Pencil. It is an active capacitive stylus. The difference is that the Apple Pencil communicates with the iPad; which gives you pressure sensitivity. In order to do this, the Pencil must be registered with the iPad, which is accomplished by plugging the Pencil into the iPad’s Lighting port (this only needs to be done once). I suspect - but have not tested - that this communication also is used for tilt detection; so it may be registering as vertical all the time. Because of the communication between the iPad and the Pencil, which this stylus does not have, I’m surprised that the iPad recognized it as a pencil; and not just a finger. I would not depend on this behavior remaining present; as it’s arguably a bug (but one which happens to work in favor of the user in this instance)... at some point in the future, you may find yourself back to wearing a glove or hovering your hand over the screen. Oh well... it’s only $17... less than dinner out at a restaurant (remember those?).

Yes, I can confirm: the Apple Pencil 1 (and probably the new Pencil 2)must be paired with an iPad to work. But as seen in the Notes app, Apple seems to detect some basic pen functionality. If this is all you need, this clone is fine.

I got one that's kind of like this, but for 30-something dollars. The battery life is surprisingly long!

Bought myself an iPad Pro off eBay recently ( a second gen version) and also an Apple Pencil as well (a genuine first gen obviously since that works for this tablet). I suppose you get what you pay for with these pencil alternatives but at least I could get pressure sensitivity with my genuine Pencil. I even could do shading by tilting the pencil to the side as I tried in Procreate. Only a shame the second gen Apple Pencil isn't compatible for my tablet but I guess these companies know how to milk money out of suckers like me that way.

I wouldn't worry as the 2nd gen is functionally identical at drawing as the first. The joys are the shorter length/balance, wireless charging, and being able to tap it to flip tools AFAIK. So yeah, nice to have if you're getting a newer iPad, but the refresh rate and other pressure/tilt functions are identical so your drawings would come out identical - so it's nicer to use, but not limiting your artwork.

I have this for my iPad Pro 11” and it works great, it’s just better on the Pro because it has reduced latency; you need to dull the tip on a piece of glass though. IT WILL SCRATCH YOUR SCREEN.

Actually just tested and iPad Pro with Face ID will unlock from flat on a table, just a tip for anyone looking to get one!

Yeah ipads are pretty good for reading. I only ever used my old one for comics, couldn't really find another use for it.

There are some screen protectors that make it nicer to write with. They don't feel and sound like you are writing on glass. Great for note taking.

THANKS for this, as, would be a good choice for a child’s use, & even an adult that doesn’t wanna shill out $99 for an Apple Pencil Gen 1 (or $40-$80 for a pencil on any “marketplace” type apps). Instead of buying a used Pencil gen 1; this would be the way to go (if don’t need that pressure sensitivity) for kids doing schooling now😉 Thanks for the info 👍🏻 The only downside (con), would be shipping time; as it may take a bit longer for the “crisis” we are living w/ currently; besides that.....can’t think of any negatives, imo. Thx 😁
