ALL were an improvement! The 30H had the best clarity overall. Clean sounds SHOULD have been considered as well, as not all speakers to both types of signals well! (UNLESS they're LORANTZ speakers of course! )
This is why I love this channel. I know a LOT of (mostly useless) information about guitars, but up until about a year ago, the only thing I knew about amps was how to turn them on.
Mojotone makes amazing speakers. Love the greyhounds and the British vintage series. The Bv-25ms rival my amazing vintage celestions. The greyhounds sound incredible with just about every high gain amp I’ve recorded through them
@@Gainovermg yeah the greyhounds cover some of the ground that V30s do, but they actually work for cleans, and don’t have that spikey upper midrange. It’s like all the stuff I like in a V30 without the drawbacks. My bandmate has an invective and we couldn’t believe how great 2 greyhounds and 2 creamback M75s sound together with that amp.
So awesome. I have a Marshall 4 x 12. It has the evh, bv 25m, swamp thing and stock celestial speaker in it (waiting on a Hesu demon) That one cab, coupled with a multitude of mics and I’m overwhelmed with tone choices. It’s a lot of fun. Johan and Glenn. Both are my “go to” for speaker stuff. 🤘🤘
I started watching this video in my car as I was waiting for some heavy weather to pass so I could drive on, and the difference between the original speakers and the upgrades is clear even on a phone speaker. When watching the video again through some decent monitors, it is even more incredible. My fav is the BV30H, that speaker sounds fantastic!
This is absolutely an A+ video. I don’t like the idea of luging around (or paying for) a cabinet in addition to a combo. Seeing exactly how to put a new speaker in, and hearing the difference between the two is GREAT.
Yes!! Hey Glen I really appreciate you pushing MoJo. My younger brother Andrew has been with them since they were in a shop behind the owners house. Aside of working with the signature artist, and content creators he is on the R&D for alot of their products including speakers. I remember testing the B30s in Andrews garage when they were still in the development stages. Andrew is a metal guitar player at heart, They got the sauce they thats for sure. Love the show, long time fan here.
Excellent advice when you said the Sheffield speaker sucked. I tried to like it back in the day and wanted to like it but quickly found out it was inferior to fane, celestion, and eminence models. THE SPEAKER IS THE FILTER. YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD AND PUT THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN. You've single handedly made us guitar players everywhere {that have 30+ years of experience} happy. And hopefully some young-uns too. You deserve more business sir.!!
My 1971 Marshall cabinet with G 12 M’s is a freaking awesome speaker that brings home the mojo, I’ve tried others and kept coming back to it… Keep on rockin
As a cab builder who uses Mojotone speakers- I love them! My builds usually have BV-30Hs or Greyhounds in them. But some of my absolute favorite mixes came from the 30V and their Watchtower greenbacks.
Great demonstration Glenn!! I personally installed a DV-77 couple years back into my combo from a V30, and it sounds amazing, a lot more focused. Love these combos, very versatile if you work with it.
Glen! Thanks for making this video. I don't know if you saw my comment on your first video of the 6505 combo, I had suggested this very test. As I had said, if the room is small, often a small combo sounds bigger than a half-stack even WITH metal tones. Sometimes there just isn't enough space in the room to get all that air moving by a long-throw 4X12. Thanks for the video. I thought it would be a great option. Now you have scientifically proved it. Thank you Glen!
That's my sound! I prefer using an amp that has more watts than the speaker. It is great to hear it in a quality mix. Your videos are a gem to the metal community! Keep up the good work!
Speakers are what matter! Those BVM's sound freaking awesome! I wish I would have learned how MUCH MORE IMPORTANT SPEAKERS really are! DAMN! I sold my Peavey combo because it never sounded that great- EDUCATION CAN BE EXPENSIVE.....great stuff man!!! I am subbed!
I own that amp. the speaker alone is not enough of an upgrade. what worked for me and blew me away I changed the internal speaker cable with a monster cable and the amp came to life and the sound is orgasmic
Maybe it’s because i grew up playing thru em but I like my G12T-75s . I know it’s not the industry preferred driver but I know how it responds and I like it’s or I’m used to it’s flavor. My current drivers are in a Sunn 412 that toured as a bass cab for years before I got it.
The G12T-75 is a good speaker, the bad reputation comes mainly from people not knowing how to use them. Like every other Celestion speaker, its sound shifted in different eras, probably due to production choices. I love how it sounds combined with a good Greenback, they're from the same heritage so they mix well, however it adds depth in the low end and bite in the high end, while the Greenback dominates the midrange.
this video annihilates any argument against the amount of sonic change one can expect from swapping speakers. good on you, Glen! this argument can now be laid to rest.
Glenn, I literally just found and bought a used 6505+ today for no other reason than to try this because of how neat it sounds after watching this video yesterday. I told myself I wouldn't do anything with a 5150 or anything in its direct family and what you demonstrated actually made me reconsider it. If nothing else, it will be a neat project amp and I'm stoked to swap out the speaker (I know it's a little thing but it's always weirded me out since I thought soldering would be involved and that's a skill I never actually developed). Thanks man! :)
This is actually pretty cool how you show people all this. I'm interested in doing this. Very interested, it's done on a budget, but with a huge reward. Thank you.
Glen, after watching your first video on this amp I decided it was time to leave behind the solid state Marshall I've been playing since high school and get a big boy amp. On your advice I bought one of these for $400. The sound was disappointing at first, which I knew might be the case ahead of time knowing what you had said about the speaker and what I had read about the speaker on forums. The original speaker is not even a real Sheffield, as Sheffields are made in the USA, and this is made somewhere in China. After changing out what I assume were the original preamp tubes (V1 and V5 were toast) things definitely improved. And most importantly, I got a new speaker made at the factory in Eminence, KY, about an hour from my house. Now, it sounds like a real amp! Fronting it with a tube screamer clone really helped too. I found the original speaker to be muffled and ice picky. If you like a cheap knock off of a green back with scooped mids (on an amp known for its mids) really fizzy highs, and farty lows, the original speaker may be fine for you. As for me, my 6505+ proudly wears an "Eminence inside" badge! Lots of people have replaced the speakers in these with a V30, or with an Eminence Governor or Swamp Thang. I didn't do any of those, because I didn't want to sound like everybody else! But what I did put in there sounds good. You haven't mentioned this in either of your two videos on this amp, but I think it is important for people to know there is a bit of an issue with the FX loop. It is not transparent. Many people complain about it, but some people like it better. However, this can be fixed very cheaply if you are any good at soldering and know what parts of the amp to stay away from so you don't get shocked and die. As a side note, because a certain angry, long-haired Canadian would have told me to, I did an A/B test. I'm glad I did too, because at first I couldn't tell much difference between the speakers, but listening back to back shows they are quite different. Let me know if you want the files Glen, and I'll send them to you. Thanks! Loving the new amp!
I’ve had this combo for about 9 years, ended up chopping it up to remove the cab (basically giving me a 60w head) and no reasonable amount of money could make me part with it it’s amazing
Just as a side note: speaker polarity only matters when using multiple speakers. If you switch the polarity on one speaker, it will be in opposite phase to the other and cancel it out. The same is true when using multiple amps and/or cabs: make sure the polarity is identical on all of them. When this is your only amp, the polarity on the speaker matters not.
One of my only regrets as a young lad was faced with a selection between Black Widow and Sheffield, I thought the font looked more refined so I thought the Sheffield would have a more refined sound. Maybe it sounds better after being in storage for a few decades. Tone crafting molds and spores perhaps.
That phase cancelling segment was insane! I liked the brightness of the V for leads, but maybe overpowering for rhythm. The H and M both sounded great to my ears. I'm not really in the market for an amp at the moment, but looking forward to the next video on using it as a head. BTW the MUG arrived - thank you Glenn!
9:50 I actually prefer the sheffield. But then again my favourite speaker is the T75, which everyone shits on nowadays despite it having been used on a billion classic metal records
Yeah I have two Marshall quads loaded with them from that era when I brought the cabs. One thing I really like about them is that each quadbox is rated in total at 300 watts with them inside! Would I ever run a 300 watt per channel power amp into them? Probably not, but it gives one confidence that you're not gonna pop it!
I love the 30H sound! I like the top end clarity without slashing the ears. The M sounds kinda hollow, maybe? I've been looking for a speaker to swap the crappy one that my Marshall combo comes with, but I'm certain this one will gwt the job done.
Lately I started recording cabinets (loaded with classics V30) with a Behringer XM8500, a €30 microfone that is a little more acid than an SM57, and I love it! I play black metal and I find it perfect, I suggest you to try it by yourself, trist me you'll not regret it!
Who else likes it when Glenn yells and the red clip light comes on in Reaper? :) LOL We’re turning into the old guys that yell at kids to get off our lawn Glenn! “Raking the Lawn, Raking the Lawn!” ❤ from James Bay! \m/, ,\m/
For years I ran my guitar through my 1st gen script version 5150 head into a 15" Peavey Black Widow speaker cab. It always sounded great for what I was looking for. Pictures hanging on the wall didn't stand a chance when the chugs hit.
I’ve got one of the 212 combos cut into a head, and let me say. This is totally true. I have tried it will several different cabs, and the speaker is definitely the factor holding it back. I’ve got an older Peavey 2x12 cab from the 80’s with black widows and it’s a much more solid Peavey cab for about half what you’ll pay for a new one.
When you done the out of phase trick, there was more sound left over (AKA the difference in sound) than when you used the same trick with changing pickups, what a surprise. ;)
That upper-mid grind of the BV25M is very reminiscent of the Celestion G12M Legacy/Heritage series (not the G12M Anniversary, which is a different beast). One of my all-time favourite speakers.
For the longest while I thought my 5150 combo was shitty sounding because i bought it used. Thought it was just the speakers being old or something but NOOOOPE. it was the damn shitfield. even opened it and saw the stickers on the back. might get a pair of the BV25M's for it, cuz man I really need the upgrade. Thank goodness for SMG's videos because it has really made me change my approach to just choosing what is right for upgrades. Keep up the amazing work!
When you talk about creating new tones by stayong clear of Celestions, I couldnt agree more. I LOVE the tone of Eminence Speakers. Id love to.see you put a set through thier paces and see your thoughts
I’m actually excited to see your next video on how to turn this into a head. I’ve been debating getting one, but I have so many combos and not enough space for them.
@@haydenkayne i know how to hook it into a separate cabinet. I was hoping he meant actually putting it into a head instead of keeping the whole combo cabinet.
Glenn, Jet City 5012C is Soldano Licensed amp that is a clone of HotRod 50+. Look into Jet City amps with two rocker switches, without jewel light. Those are modafunking killers blessed directly by Soldano.
Ok, so I followed your advice and got the 6505+ 112 combo and I was pretty impressed by the tubes and size for such a reasonable price. I got this monstrosity about 2 months ago and have been trying to figure out a decent setting ever since (guessing due to the sh!++y stock speaker?). Fast forward to today; I followed your advice yet again and ordered the mojotone bv30v on Sweetwater (on sale for 110 USD) and got it today. Followed these stupid simple instructions and the difference is literally night and day.
My 2x12 cab has some custom built Ted Weber Legacys in it that my buddy consulted me on buying, and then ended up selling to me cuz he got a vintage Traynor amp and cab. Every amp I've plugged into it (and I tried quite a few) all agreed. They like the Weber speakers A LOT and so do I.
I have a fucking guitar and free amp sims and i have been following this marvelous guy for ages! Cant do a shit about what he recommends, but still love him. Because of him, I could at least plug my guitar to the damn computer and lay down aome tracks. I am easily amused so they sounded great to me! Someday i gotta thank you in person Glen!!
I played through those sheffield speakers when I got my 6505 and it sounded like a blanket was over the cab. I ended up buying a randall cab with Jaguar 60s. It was so much better than everything else.
Hey Glenn, Why not try adding a powerful magnet on the back of the shitfield? Like the neody magnets sticking it at the back... I tried it on a cheap 70/80 speaker and it added more definition on bottoms and mids
Gleeeennnn, you playing the JP "Gotta Another Thing Coming" riff and me stuck at a red light has tempted me to put one foot on the brake, one on the gas, and do doughnuts in front of a cop! 😂 (And I do have a BMW I can do it in).
Nice! I have been guilty of not using anything but Mesa or Orange cabs. But there is a ton of good gear that won't break the bank. Definitely a good time to be a player.
Hah I'm doing a retro version of this and was thinking of swapping out the Sheffield in my bandit 112 for a Seventy Eighty or something of a different brand so cool to hear a new to me brand of speaker. Keep up the sciencey stuff 😂
An amazing super unique speaker is the Celestion G15V-100. I made a cab with two of them in and I play suuuuper heavy shit on my 8 string through them and they sound incredible! Basically 15 inch green backs with the frequency response shifted slightly lower. Really throaty growly sound. Highly recommend!
To be fair, Carcass, Machine Head, and In Flames (as well as many others) blended solid state amps with their 5150's to get those "iconic" tones. They also used V30's!! MojoTone makes some pretty good, and affordable "imitation" oversized Mesa and Marshall 1960 cabs (loaded and unloaded), speakers, and a few good pickups (on the rare occasion they have them in stock).
