Why do these architects always come in after the materials have been ordered? Seems a bit late... hasn't he already paid for these walls they want him to get rid of?

Piers scrounging the countryside for stuff to finish th rooms with reminds me of the late sixties when people were in a sort of anti-materialistic frame of mind and doing anything that would look imperfect, recycled, earthy, call it what you will was the way to go. Sometimes it was of necessity, of course, but it was often just the sort of ethics of the times. With the corona virus devastating our health and economies across the world over, i can see the situation ending up in a similar way for a big segment of society every where. Creative uses of unusual materials and re-use and recycling will be the order of the day and I think we will all be better for it.

His house turned out great. I love the metal wall too. If he wanted to sell, it would definitely be at a profit. People always think “high design” is more expensive, but oftentimes use of less expensive materials in unique ways and making things simpler can save money. It’s about being clever more than the money spent.

These self-build are incredibly courageous, smart, + inspiring. The people in the UK have tremendous grit. They are allowed to get true info (the need to greatly reduce their carbon footprint), and, affordable housing is extremely scarce. There's an actual shortage of literal structures. Due to overspending + poor planning by developers, we all pay the price for their quite self-centered greed (most, not all, developers).

Those parents have great faith in their son risking their pension for a house their son has no experience to build. I wish my parents had that kind of faith in me. I was so nervous so glad it worked out better than I thought. Good job.

Nice h house that sounded like it was over budget by 2000£. Not bad! Looks fairly impressive. I like airlocks like he put in. Honestly, plastic or glass sheeting works good enough for an air lock and it still gives you a larger line of sight. I have a slight affinity for tensegrity structures so if I would of ran into miles of steel wire rope at the beginning of the build; it would of ended up replacing many of the structures tension members. I also like plenty of light but plenty of privacy in my bedroom, bath, and if possible reading room part of the house. No big glass windows in my bedroom walls, but windows at the roof line and skylights in that section of the house is a must. It's just more intimate that way when your a married man. Liked the shed roof & modern open plan house that he ended up with. Steel siding these days not only saves a ton of money in the USA but is pretty much maintenance free. His steel bedroom wall even meet my approval. Great job for a budget of 100000£ and a build price of 102000£.
