Actually I think that's five pounds well spent, a box of sandwiches and a drink at work costs that; if not more.

Just wanted to take the tine to say how much I enjoy these videos you put out. Really watchable and easy to digest, especially as somebody new to ownership and usage. I feel my understanding and vocabulary increasing as time goes on. So cheers, yeah?

It's a cap gun. At least with a Baikal you can bang a fence post in. :D

My first gun, cost 60 quid in 83 still have it, took it for a walk last year and shot a lovely high pigeon with it first shot. Still have 3 singles, something pure about using them. I’m very lucky to have 6 farms with hedgerows to walk along, but I must admit I prefer my sxs 410 to all of my 12 gauges.

Yildiz makes a single shot folder that is very popular among turkey hunters here in USA. They often saw the barrel shorter and add extra tight choke tube with a red dot sight. Very light to tote.

I have a cheapo .410 bore, single. On a ranch you use these for snakes, and varmints. You can leave them outside while you work, and it's not like taking your nicer rifle outside and having to worry.

I started at 10 with a single shot 410 then like after a week of shooting that I was shooting a 12 bore side by side now I shoot a browning 725

A very natural progression, i think I managed about 5 shots with a 20 before going straight for a 12. I didn't like the disadvantage (or perceived one anyway)

I have the exact same gun, used to go pigeon shooting when i was 16 with my dad in the late 80s.

4:00 still very much used up in rural Scotland. And popularity in the US certainly has exploded with the prepper/survivalist types. The idea typically being that a modern ejector single shot can be very quick to reload, which, whilst not being the best for birds, can be very effective with small to medium game. Also the obvious weight advantage as mentioned as an easy to carry hedgerow gun.

Not seen many tbh always seems to be a benelli semi or some form of over under that ive seen, maybe to do with whether you already own one? Shooter age perhaps?

In the states people buy these single shot shotguns as “stash” or “hideaway” guns, everyone owns one

These 410 single shots are what Americans call a garden gun. They keep these for varmints in the kitchen garden. The 20 bores are usually a youngsters first hunting firearm.

What I call a Garden Gun is the 9mm rimfire bolt action smooth bore shotguns that fire either a shot load or a round ball solid

Great video John, reminded me of when my grandfather used to take me out when I was only about 5, still love the chance to walk along a hedgerow, sadly without a gun now. I agree entirely about the purity of shooting a single. Thanks

Back in the late 1970's I used to do a bit of work with The Hilton Gun Company who used to import Pedretti single barrel folders of the type shown. One of the sales team, a splendid chap called Dave, used to sell quite a few and when questioned about it he told us that he sold loads to the Middle East. I queried this and received the explanation that they used them as Camel tethers! To howls of disbelief he explained that if you don't push them into the sand far enough they still work because not even a Camel would be seen dead dragging a Pedretti behind them!

I’m from the U.S., and I’d be happy to own both of those, and would spend them money to have one in .410 as well. 1: it’d be super neat to have a full set. 2: while small, light scatter guns are not ideal for volume shooting, they are wonderful for carrying around as a handy tool. A simple gun slip and a shot card with a variety of loads in it and you have yourself a versatile tool that will get most jobs done well enough, like a leatherman of the shot gun world.

In rural Canada where I am, back in the day almost every family had one or two single shot shotguns kicking around. Youngsters learned to shoot with them, farmers kept pests down with them and many a duck, rabbit and grouse were taken by them, usually in the hands of younger teenagers. Only after demonstrating shooting proficiency were they allowed to graduate to a pump gun, invariably an Ithaca Model 37, Winchester Model 12 or a Remington 870. It was usually later on as adults that they finally got an auto loader or an over under. Rarely did you see a side by side in the field or in a goose or duck blind, at least after the 1950's. If you did, it was likely dad's or grandpa's old Ithaca, L.C. Smith, Fox or even rarer, a Parker. I never once saw a Winchester 21. Not in my social circle, at least. That was a fancy pants, city slicker gun!

got one in 20g marked as stirling, had it since we were about 12 i am 55 now. learning gun, beats the shoulder hammering single harrington and richardson and the stevens we used at age 9, black shoulders toughened us up. my twin brother used the h.r i used the stevens. dad got the 20 gauge to ease they pain a bit, maybe mum said something about the badge of honor we wore on our shoulders lol. kill well the stirling does

Learned to shoot with an old Iver Johnston "Champion" 12 bore single barrel. Was my great Grandfathers, from the early 1920's. Regularly put Eley Alphamax through it, which looking back, was a tad risky 😬

Wow in some ways I’m kinda jealous of the UK now. A similar gun in the US (a used single-shot 12ga of some Turkish make) costs $100. A £5 gun like that sounds fantastic.

Supply and demand my friend. In a country where anyone can own a firearm, there's much more demand, therefore prices are higher. Here there a relatively few firearm owners and therefore less demand, equalling lower prices

Thanks Jonny for another interesting video. You've made the point that it's not about what it looks like or how much it costs or whether it's popular. It's about the joy of shooting.

Most of those guns I have encountered will fire with the safety on when the trigger is pulled hard . I have a mint Spanish Mugica .410 3" folding sb hammer gun . It is great for shooting possums out of trees and sitting rabbits but useless when the target is moving . But it is fun .

You could always fit a long suppressor like the 'Hushpowers', it's only an aluminium tube with the barrel drilled in a few places and you'd be quids in!! (Might have to get it re-proofed though?)
@tomsoki5738
@tomsoki5738 4 года назад
That would be great for humane dispatch, get a .410 make the barrel as short as is legally possible and load it with a large birdshot load and you can quickly end a fox or deer with a round to the head

Belgian poachers guns go for more because they are older and so have a bit more history and are generally more sought over than modern versions.

I like single shot guns for teaching my kids to shoot. If god forbid something goes freakishly wrong, Dad will only get shot once. They also usually require extra actions over and above other guns to ready them to fire.
