The Secret to shooting a 410

The little 410 is so different in size, weight and balance to our usual 12 gauge. These are my reasons for historically struggling to shoot one, but with a .410 competition at Casa De Campo on the horizon, it was about time I learnt.
So we hooked up with Jake Pike and Adam Calvert to try and get to grips with it!

I'll turn 75 my next birthday and have accumulated a couple of health issues along the way. I hunt doves mostly and with a .410 mostly. I think it is adding to the number of years I will be able to hunt.

after watching films about .410 from TGS and TSC I decided to buy my first .410 at the height of the international cartridge shortage. I bought a Browning citori for my 49th birthday present. With the price and limited availability of cartridges I try to make every shot count. I used to consider the .410 a "child's gun" but after owning and shooting sporting clays with it I realized that it will make a man out of you and humble you scores. Box checked!

Did always wonder why the .410 was a ‘kids’ gun. One hell of a way to demoralize a kid and put them off the sport 😂. I love taking the .410 out for a couple boxes sometimes after I’m done with the 12

@@harryminkley1962I think it's a "kid's gun" in the sense that it goes bang, yet doesn't carry as far as a 22 if the neophyte forgets some of their target discipline. I'd guess most kids used them for small game rather than serious wingshooting.

Now that 410 ammo has gotten even more expensive and rarer I'd recommend to you a MEC 600 jr in 410, a 25 pound bag of shot, primers, 410 wads a reloading handbook for 410 and a can of Hodgdon's L'il Gun. The material costs of reloading 410 will soon pay off the equipment. And if you like you could reload 000 buckshot for it. Material costs for 410 birdshot is around 4 bucks a box if you have hulls.

I bought a 725 .410 last year and absolutely love it. We often shoot 100 sporting clays with 12, 20, 16... then go out and shoot another 50 of the easier targets with .410. Last week I actually shot a better score with a .410 than a 12 gauge.

Dear friends! What an interesting video. Thank you for showing us all its relevance to Sporting Clays presentations. You show us that this little one has plenty of merits. He deserves much more than to be relegated to oblivion. THANK YOU to the American skeet discipline who keeps two calibers alive still today: the .410 and the .28. Thanks also to all the authentic small game hunters who use the .410. These two categories help keep subgauge calibers alive. You guys demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is not so much the number of pellets contained in a cartridge that guarantees success in clay shooting. The guarantee of success is to fire at the right time and at the right place in the trajectory. That's an open secret. The challenge is to apply the fundamentals in such a way as to shoot at the right time and at the right place WHILE ALWAYS looking at the target from the start. Late Wayne Mayes, Mr. American Skeet. This exceptional shooter and distinguished holder of an endless list of numerous titles and records, shows us that the well-known expression saying: bigger is better is not really justified in clay shooting. Meaning that the phrase more pellets more kills is not an axiom of truth. I raise this point because Mayes, in his successful career, hit 100 straight American skeet 200 times with the .410 caliber. For the last 6 or 5 years of his illustrious career, Mayes used only this caliber in all events of American skeet competition. To think that the secret of success is to relate to the caliber used is a bit like believing in Santa Claus... The secret lies in the optimal way of using the conjunction between peripheral vision and direct vision. The other determining element is to ensure an impeccable gun fit that matches the conformation of the shooter's face, the length of his neck and his LOP. With the aforementioned attributes, the targets move inexorably towards a fatal fate. Cheers to all of you guys.

Two of most embarrassing moments of my shooting life were 410 related. 1) An Olympic gold medallist giving me a stir about doing 2 rounds od practiseDTL with a 410 , and 2) deciding the slippery, hard plastic butt plate on the Yildiz needed to replaced with a rubber pad... trying to explain to the gunsmith ( and having tge rest of a busy shop overhear) that I wanted a rubber recoil pad on a 410 wasn't my finest hour.

I’d take the 2-1/2 inch.410 shell every time over the 3”. The factory loads for the 3 are so slow at 1100 fps. The 2-1/2 is usually 1235. I do have a 3/4 oz handload for the 3 inch that is 1210 fps. I use it for hunting as 3/4 oz was actually the factory weight for 3 inch.410’s back in the day. Since the factory loaded 3 inch with 11/16 oz at 1100 is completely ineffective against game. I once shot a grouse that was sitting on a log 3 times from 15 feet away with 3” federal #4 shot and watched it literally shake it feathers off after each shot- and then it walked away. Again American factory loads in 3 inch .410 are unethical to use on game imo. Take the velocity of the 1/2 oz 2-1/2 if you have to shoot factory loads. The 1/2 oz is deadly at 25 yards and in.

I'll never understand why people talk sh!t about .410's. It doesn't have a lack of power, it just has a smaller load. It's probably the most versatile gun that exists. You can 410 get loads for every single small game size that exists, as well as being able to take larger game like deer or vermin with slugs & buckshot. Little recoil, light firearm, easy to use, much lower noise (which is a good thing) and still extremely lethal. People sneering at the power of a 410 is so silly. if a person was struck with 5 pellet 000 buckshot from a 410 they would still be blown apart and hit the floor instantly. People talking about it like an air rifle is weird. Very useful & respectable firearm. Louder and larger loads doesn't mean better. A 410 will get any job done.

It's about time you treated yourself to a 410. Folks, the 410 is NOT a difficult caliber to shoot, the only difference between the 410 and 12 gauge is that you have to be a bit more precise with the 410 and the 12 gauge uses 1/2 ounce or more lead than you really need. BTW, I have a Silver Pigeon III 410/28 gauge 2 barrel set with 30 inch sporting barrels and don't find it at all "whippy'. Note, I load my own and all that extra lead for the 12 gauge adds up to about 2 dollars a box.

410 shotgun uses this actual measurement. A 12-gauge shotgun's bore is between 0.720″ and 0.740″ so the terms “12 bore” isn't actually correct even though it was a common term until recently.Jan 31, 2020. 410 is the only one you should refer to as bore. 12, 16, 20, 28 should always be referred to as gauge.
