In the past few weeks there has been a media firestorm surrounding Catherine, Princess of Wales aka Kate Middleton. What started out as a leave of absence to deal with a private medical issue sprouted conspiracy theories on line and has ballooned into a royal PR nightmare and calls for proof of life. And the Palace’s poor handling of the situation by releasing a heavily doctored photo and other missteps has poured gasoline on the fire. Throughout history, people have been fascinated by royals and especially royal mysteries with even the slightest whiff of scandal. And there have been so many times when the truth turned out to be even stranger than fiction, it’s little wonder that we’re primed to imagine the worst.
Today I will catch you up on the timeline of what has been happening surrounding the Princess of Wales. I’m not going to get into the many rumors which have been circling, as they are, at this point only gossip and not confirmed. But I will be discussing the historic context as to why the Palace has so bungled this situation, and share a few other royal mysteries from the past to explain why the public has become so obsessed with this story and spun it out beyond all proportion.

Lol, always wanted to be the shining star, but he is outshined by everyone else. Eclipsed by his mom, his sister, his 1st wife, his children, and now their spouses. The only one that doesn't is Camilla, which is why I'm sure that he hung on to her.

Came here after Catherine announced her cancer diagnosis. The way the US and British media has treated her has been appalling. I could not imagine coming to terms with this diagnosis and trying to figure out how to tell my children with the media hounding me, spreading lies. That is so heartbreaking.

I was rushed into hospital last April with excruciating stomach pain. After scans they found a huge abdominal abscess. I had emergency drainage surgery and spent 10 days there. The drain was left in for 3 weeks. A year later I’m still not right and need further treatment. If it would have burst it could have gravely seriously. I’ve been left bloated and in pain. The last thing I would want is to be photographed. I haven’t even shared this with some friends and family. Kate doesn’t need to explain herself. She needs to rest. I’m sure she will make an appearance it due time. I do find the photos very strange and the way things have been handled. It’s not hard to see why it’s caused a frenzy. When we see so much of them people feel deserving of answers which is ridiculous. From commoner to royal we ALL have the right to medical privacy. Wishing her a full recovery ❤

@@sharonsmith583 not really! my friend was walking around the day after the surgery and discharged the third day. There is no reason for princess Kate to be out of action for such a long time and there is no need for the royal family to release a fake photo to calm the media. It is an act of of panic! They are trying to hide something deeply concerning. Maybe they killed princess Kate and now staged the car accident to kill her mother as well because she knew something which the crown doesn't want the public to know. I only hope my suspicion are untrue and that Princess Kate will return well and healthy in April as promised. Let's hope they (RF) won't release terrible news that Princess Kate had some weird acute disease and had passed away in her sleep or something ridiculous like that. I lost all faith in the RF after witnessing what they did to Diana. King Charles and Camilla are two selfish, disgraceful people who has no ethics nor respect for other people. I will never trust what i see in the news from the UK royal family.

This is not about you. This is about Princess Katherine. And as a Registered Nurse, I can tell you that even our abdominal surgery patients are up and about within a day or two. Then, they are released to home by day four or five.

I know someone going through something similar right now. He was rushed in with severe abdominal pain on Christmas Eve. They found a tear in his intestine. They PLANNED surgery for about a week later after they were able to stabilize him and give him antibiotics. He had the surgery and needed a reversible colostomy which will be removed next month - after about a 3 month recuperation at home. I'm sure there will be more recovery time after the reversal takes place next month. People who keep saying this think with Catherine is "so strange" must be lucky enough to have never experienced major abdominal surgery or known someone else who has. It's very frustrating to hear all the hyperbolic speculation.

I think she's having a difficult recovery and probably doesn't look like herself. She takes pride on her appearance and probably doesn't want anyone to see her swollen and miserable. If she wants to take the rest of the year away, I'm 100% okay with it. Not my business.

Frankly, I doubt most people will care what is exactly happening, if Kate wants to take time off to heal, that’s totally cool. But the palace PR has done more harm in botching any kind of normal reaction to this. They should have just been honest and people wouldn’t be up in a fuss.

Knowing that she's been diagnosed with cancer, I just wish that the Wales team had followed the lead of the King's team and been open about it. She doesn't owe it to us, yes but it could have saved her a lot of grief from all the speculation. That photo was a gigantic botch. I wish them all well

@@strange144George Vl, who died of cancer, was 56 at his death. The cause of his illness was not publicised as there was a taboo of talking about cancer in those days - but it was known that he was unwell.

@@Lady_dromeda George V and George VI lived in different eras (1936) post WW1 (1952) post WW2 Back then about all they could do was operate to remove the cancer (or as much of it as possible on an organ) No chemo. no radiation therapies. Penicillin was not available to the public until 1946 -- Then in only in limited amounts. Since the military still had a huge need for it as the soldiers were discharged, etc. And private manufacturers ramped up for the civilians.

I also felt that C is not feeling her best and doesnt want to be photographed, and this led to the situation not being handled well. A very human reaction. Also, your voice is very calming😃

Frankly, and I agree my with this theory, my mother has posited that the Princess of Wales’s mystery abdominal surgery was probably a hysterectomy. It’s a plausible surgery for her to get (she’s a woman in her 40s with 3 children), it explains why there is no visual evidence of any surgery (any scars aren’t in an area we would see) and it explains both the long recovery time and desire for privacy.

A robotic vaginal hysterectomy takes about a week long of recovery time 😢. Being as economically “stable “ as they are, I can’t imagine getting an old school hysterectomy which would take about two weeks of downtime, three tops if you have issues with pain, etc. If what you recommend is a fact it’s even scarier or really creepy you know…? Hopefully this lady is alright… 👍

An umbilical hernia that might have cause complications with her pelvic floor would also be possible. Many women deal with that. It was a missed opportunity for the palace to just say that and head off all these rumors. I feel bad she has to recover with all thi scrutiny.

But, a hysterical does not require almost six months for recovery. She was last seen, in public, in late December. Now, I read that now she will not be seen until the first of June. That is about six months!!

I am not making commentary on what she may or may not have had done, because she's entitled to full medical privacy. That said, I personally had a hysterectomy late last year. An abdominal surgery. The swelling was so severe, I genuinely looked pregnant for months. I *still* swell if I'm particularly active and am frequently embarrassed by that. Given my young age, everyone assumes I'm pregnant. Regardless of what surgery she had, not wanting to be swollen on camera is not unreasonable. It's also not unusual to say "I'll be able to do this post op!" and then not be up to it. Hence the Italy trip cancelation. Let the poor lady be!

Yes, it may well have been a hysterectomy - but the handling of the Italian visit still doesn’t really make sense. If the surgery was “planned”, Catherine was, at the best construction, given poor advice as to whether she would be up to a trip to Rome or not. Of course she is entitled to her medical privacy - but it would have been much better if, like the King, she had been open and honest. I’m afraid that is what is expected of royalty - and it would have been setting an example of courage to other women, frightened perhaps of having to have a hysterectomy.

I agree I went into a myomectomy that resulted in a stoma, the stoma was not planned. I had to stay in hospital for the same time. I believe that this could have happen to the princess. There’s only so much you can plan when it comes to health.

It could have been planned and things didn't go to plan and dear Catherine may need longer than the original estimate to heal. They could have gone in for a partial hysterectomy and decided to do a full. She may have underestimated her ability to heal from such a massive surgery be a hysterectomy or anything else.

Hysterectomy was my (completely non-medical professional!) guess when it was first announced she was having abdominal surgery. Just about anything else would be announced and would almost certainly be met with sympathy and then moving on. A hysto (given the fact that one of her roles is mother of the future king) could come across differently. (And yes, I know she has already given birth to "heir and a spare - and another spare.")

No matter how glamorous it looks on the outside, the amount of stress and public scrutiny, and expectation of always performing certain duties with a smile on your face sounds absolutely horrendous. Doesn't even have to be royalty, could just be fame or celebrity status. I know some people seek fame & being a celebrity, but not all celebrities seek it. Just because a person becomes famous, that doesn't oblige them to make every aspect of their lives an open book. People should just accept whatever information they're given, respectfully let the rest remain private & not speculate wildly on what may or may not have happened or will happen.

I can't imagine being seriously sick (I am) & having to talk about it non stop. I would NOT want my picture taken at the height of it. The anxiety around being seriously sick & having to act normal to make others feel better about it is also off the table. As I feel better, my eyes are looking much better, smoother, without super dark circles. Catherine was looking very stressed & tired last we saw her which was probably from what she was going through before surgery. In my case I still have no answer as to what it is but I do know what it isn't. Imagine if I were Catherine! When she comes back healthier, looking rested, people will forget she had abdominal surgery & instead got a face/eye lift etc. etc. etc. We don't need to know exactly what was done, she will tell us herself if she chooses to. I waited well over a week after the worst was over to post anything going on with me. My year has been much like hers, I'd hate to be a Royal in the spotlight in sickness or health. I'd definitely edit any pictures & the average person never does what a professional does so if William did it, it makes sense. My jewelry has been annoying me so her not wearing her rings only means she doesn't always when she is at home like many women. It's all the media making a huge deal out of it all.

I'm a gynecologist. I was unaware of the ambulance from Sandringham late December, but it fits the timeline of the Italy trip being planned followed by a cancelation due to "planned surgery." That surgery was likely either a bowel resection or a hysterectomy - both of which would require weeks to recover (although as an American, the 2 weeks in the hospital is making me side-eye it). I wish the PoW a swift recovery & hope she gets back to her usual state of health.

Ah thank you! I'm a health care worker too, and I was side eyeing that 2 weeks in hospital as well. That's a lot of time to spend in hospital nowadays for an abdominal surgery. baring some type of serious complication

@@susanwetmore4822I wondered that too…I had a friend who had one and needed a hysterectomy due to the bleeding. There may be grief involved. A hysterectomy where they have to repair hernias, bladder issues due to pregnancy and/or remove endometriosis can take quite some time to recover from. My mom was on the hospital for 8 days here in America. They are royals in a private hospital…they likely get nursing care for longer than we would.

Wonderful video as usual! Thank you! I am someone who had an unforeseen medical condition /surgery pop up unexpectedly that significantly changed my appearance. It was a difficult and trying time for me that spanned a couple years- and has left my appearance altered. Now that I have healed- I am stronger mentally and physically than I ever was before! But- my recovery was NOT easy. I do sympathize with the Princess. To say that she has the weight of the world on her shoulders is an understatement, not to mention the negative attention she may receive as she returns to the spotlight with pundits and journalists scrutinizing her every facial feature and comparing her to her pre-surgery condition. She is a human being and deserves the dignity and space to recover in her own time. Praying for her! ❤

My initial thoughts were a miscarriage/ectopic pregnancy that resulted in a hysterectomy or D&C. And the recovery period is also including a period for grief. I don't think the surgery was initially planned as a surgery, but instead a check-up turned surgery. With that said, it doesn't matter and I hope that she's healing well.

I absolutely believe she’s fine, just in recovery. I believe that no matter how famous you are, when you have any kind of surgery, you’re allowed to rest and recuperate. They stated she’d be out until after Easter, so let’s just wait to see if anything is made. My mom believes she had a hysterectomy (I have no idea why, abdominal surgery could mean a lot of stuff). I’m not making any speculation; it’ll be revealed when she feels like she’s ready to disclose it.

Your mom probably thinks that because hernias and pelvic issues are pretty common in women closer to menopause. I thought it was probably a hernia because that's the most common thing that happens with women who give birth to multiple children.

Kate is 100% entitled to privacy, as is her family. So is Harry & Meghan. Seeing the press turn on the Royal family is almost like karma for their lack of compassion to their situation. This video is a very logical, measured (and historical, of course😉) response to the Catherine rumors specifically and royal behavior generally. The problem may be the infrastructure of those who work closely with the royals who seeming, as was said, operate at the level of a late 19th century public relations firm. It astounds me that anyone thought that the Mother's Day edited image release was a good idea. I wish the Princess a full recovery, hope that she is relaxing with her family and completely staying off of social and news media.

Princess Kate is of the age when Women have uterine and intestinal problems like fibroid tumors, or gallbladder issues. I've gone through both in my 40's and early 50's and takes weeks to recover from either one of them.

Frankly, i didn't even notice the photoshopping snd think it's all a lot of drsma and sniping over nothing. It doesn't change anything about Catherine recovering. Now thst we have seen the POW in a video explaining her cancer diagnosis, i think the photo drama is even more despicable. She had every right to keep her health private, but the blood thirsty media likely caused her to have to publicly disclose her diagnosis and need for treatment. I would absolutely hate being a public figure.i wish Catherine a speedy and full recovery.

i don't fallow anything royal at all, but my only thought is that, for all these years, their marraige and a family have been "awwd" at for being 'perfect' and her for being ' perfect' the couple as ' perfect ' . Only to now, because they aren't sharing as often as everyone wants, a 'picture perfect' photo is torn apart. I just think its crazy that so many feel entitled to more info. yes, obviously it would be great to just know, weather good or negative, but damn. Let them have some out of the spot light air and room. It's like people won't stop until they see photos of her surgery.

A staunch monarchist all my life, I find Kensington Palace’s handling of this crass beyond belief. The next surgery will be to feet that have been shot. And - I hate to say this - William’s pathological hatred of the Press (understandable, but hugely ill-advised for one in his position) may well be at the heart of this foolish affair. Naturally - to start at the beginning - a supportive public should be given an explanation as to how the surgery was “planned” when a visit to Italy had also been planned. Unbelievably inept, whatever the truth may be.

Thank you for your video Lindsay! Princess Catherine is going to get a lot of questions about her health issues when she returns back to her Royal duties. We need to realize that people get older and have medical procedures all the time, some procedures take more than 3-6 weeks to recover from. I really wish that people would stop dragging Princess Catherine through the Mud. Thank you for your respectful video about this issue with the Royal Family.

I honestly hope Kate is recovering well and all the rumours are just rumours but the way the palace handled the whole situation has been very odd... It's completely clear to everyone, even those who don't use Photoshop that the Mother's Day picture was heavily edited, and so was the picture of them in the car. They could have just released an older picture instead and explain that she's still recovering, it's not that hard. Also, the fact that they made Kate apologise for editing it? Do we actually believe she spent hours editing a picture and posted it herself on Instagram without having an expert to check on it? I'm pretty sure they could have found a way to be more honest with the public and still respect her privacy to avoid all of this, which ended up drawing even more attention to her.

As for Princess Catherine, I wish her comfort, healing and peace. The big red flag for me was the 3 major media outlets igniting this entire episode by publicizing a very public, weirdly termed; "Kill" notice to their clients🙄. It defies logic. When has the public ever been privy to such a dramatized business decision or change?? Why was that done? Seems like an electronic business communique to their clients is the standard method. The "withdrawal" of the photo could have been announced like any other "recall." I'm not buying what they've scripted.

The media is pissed that the photo was taken by William and put on their IG account. It was not meant for the media who grabbed it off their IG account! They made no money on this photo, and are losing control over the RF. They want info on her surgery so they can sell newspapers. It’s so obvious that the driving force is $$$$ for the media!

Honestly, I had a standard planned c-section (aka a major abdominal surgery) and was out of commission in some areas for 6 weeks. That's in Canada, with a similar health care setup to the UK. Also, I'm not a royal and had a job to do! My guess is more likely the stress of her daily life as a royal, mixed with the sudden opportunity to have uninterrupted private time with the kids...I'd take the opportunity too. Maybe the only lie is the "planned" part of the surgery. Appendicitis, ovarian torsion, an allergic reaction, or any other number of possible reasons for a sudden trip to the hospital could explain it. All would lead to speculation, hence a planned surgery. If she's due to return to royal duty at the end of the month, then let the poor woman rest. If she's still MIA without any actual signs of life after that, then go ahead and speculate.

What's more peculiar is the situation with Charles. He announced he would be getting treatment for an enlarged prostate, which is a highly sensitive thing, yet the type of cancer that was discovered is top-secret. It makes me suspect it's a type that's rarely survivable.

My favorite thing about this video (I don’t care about royals at all, but I love history and how you tell is so I just watch everything you make!) is how much you hammer at how difficult their lives must be, and how much they must be protective of their and their childrens’ privacy, dignity and personal information. Yet you still critique the information coming out of the palace and how it is presented for clarity and honesty, while making sure to point out how reasonably it may have happened. The rings not on, is a simple explanation. When you have surgery, you must remove your rings. Then after the surgery it is very common for you to be bloated because of the medication and gasses they use to do the surgery. No need to wear jewelry while you are recuperating, especially when it takes a few months to leave your swollen body. You would think the public should know this, especially reporters who should do their due diligence before reporting some conspiracy. 😠. God bless HRH Catherine the Princess of Wales. God save HM the King, Camilla and the Wales Family and save them from those trying to hurt them.❤

i had complex wisdom teeth surgery last year, first ever surgery, and i was beat... yes there is the physical recovery but no one really discusses the mental recovery, and just getting back to normal.

I do not hear anyone demanding to know the particulars of Kate's medical situation. What I am hearing is that people do not believe that she is okay, perhaps even unable to communicate with the outside world. Her family and friends haven't spoken with her or seen her. Her kids are also in hiding. This is highly concerning. It isn't that anyone would fault her for refusing to pose for an image, but putting out an image that has been doctored to make her appear healthy when she is not is highly dishonest. If they are willing to put out photographic lies why should we believe anything that is coming out of Kensington Palace? I have no idea who William is. I was married to a charming charismatic abuser. No one would have ever thought he liked to beat me when we were alone. I have no trust in William. He could be a complete psychopath, and no one else knows him either. You just feel like you know him because of the press coverage he receives. I am inclined to believe Harry's account of his violent temper. And that is really worrying.

I think the Princess of Wales just wanted everybody to know she was recovering and doing ok. The Family Photo is a beautiful picture. One would think the royals would have time where they did not wear their jewelry when they were at rest. The jewelry is expensive and sometimes should be stored other than worn. That does not mean William & Kate are having marital troubles. Everybody seems to be paranoid about AI. Any altering of the family photo should not raise such alarm. Everybody is a little on edge because They was steady press of the Princess until she ducked out to tend to a private health matter. There was suddenly a void in the age of reality tv. That rumors started flying makes perfect sense. Everybody calm the Princess is ok. She will be ready to go back to royal duties very soon.

This is the first I'm hearing of this because I don't fallow the royal family on any social media, but why is it that just because they're royalty people feel entitled to know everything about their personal lives? You could make the same argument that a regular celebrity would have money and fame if you didn't buy their movies, or music. I personally wouldn't feel lied to if Tom Holland had a medical emergency and just decided not to be in the public eye. It's a bit weird.... I also think it's possible the surgery was scheduled for a layer date but a complication made it an immediate problem. That would explain the ambulance. Loved the video❤

I think what the palace doesn't understand is that most of us aren't looking to get details about Kate's medical history. I am just of the opinion that if any other tax-funded institution put out photos that heavily doctored, they would be heavily scrutinized and criticized for doing so, and I don't think that the royal family should get to be above that. That being said, I also think all monarchies should be abolished based on the inherent inequality they represent. I know it's not as simple as a royal family just saying "okay we'll be private citizens now", but frankly in the long run I think abolishing any monarchy would benefit the descendants of a family, too. Being born into that level of public scrutiny is probably terrible to experience, and I am not trying to downplay that. I think monarchy was a much more tenable system for the monarchs when they were better able to control the narrative due to having more political power (and also much slower spread of information). Nowadays, it is truly a gilded cage. I think the people who would be harmed the most by the ending of any monarchy would be the lifelong staffers whose entire lives have revolved around propping up the monarchy and the aristocracy who are able to hoard almost as much generational wealth without nearly as much public scrutiny. Anyway, all that is to say, I have sympathy for Kate. I do. But if the British royal family want to maintain their position in society, I do think that they at least owe the public enough honesty to not try to pass off obviously false images as being the reality. I know they've gotten away with it in the past, but that doesn't mean I think it was okay then either.

I couldn't have worded it better myself. I agree with all of this. There is a level of transparency that public figures (who use the state and tax money) have to have. Of course we don't need her detailed medical history, but they are not private citizens. Harry and Meghan opted out of public duties (including losing income and security) to have more control of their privacy... William and Kate have that same option.

She has asked for her privacy and people think they own her and her life. She is a member of the Royal Family, a Mother, and the wife of the Future King of England. Last remember she did have hard pregnancies. All 3 times. She had severe morning sickness. So it is possible to have caused some long-term issues. As far as the planned surgery. Her Dr could have told her 2 days before. No rings....she could still be swollen.

This reminded me of when my brother had surgery before the holidays. His toe was broken and they had to use bone transplant. He couldn't do physical activity or shower for two weeks throughout the whole winter break. Ever since then, his toe was swelling for a few days and me and my whole family had to do everything for him. Now he has gotten better and can do physical activity again.
