Out of curiosity - I had a trumpet repaired back in the 90's because someone broke into my locker and bent the ever-living sh* out of it. It never looked the same. Is there a way to have the trumpet somehow dipped, to restore the plating on it? I want to have it fixed up, get the plating restored and start playing again.

Sorry to hear that. What a gruesome situation. A trumpet can indeed be lacquered or silver plated again by a competent repair tech, although the expense for the latter would be significant.

Part of what may be causing some of the deficits on this instrument in particular could be related to the volume you are pushing for. The king is made to be played at a much louder dynamic, to the point of what would be overplaying in a classical context. When you play at that level many players play sharp which in this case should pull it more in tune. Additionally that “tubby” tone is also an overcorrection for the bright and possibly spread tone that can result from playing beyond a standard volume. Essentially this horn is a niche design for a niche purpose and I absolutely agree that outside of that singular use case it is a poor instrument, however on the marching field when you need to project a baritone sound across a football field it is one of the best in class in terms of keeping a warmer sound and not flying immediately sharp, especially for non drum corps purposes. I would love to hear your rebuttal though!

How do you get the valves stop being sluggish?

Seriously tho, it depends on the issue. I’d start out by removing the valves from their casings and washing the euphonium. Then, re-oil the valves and put them back in. If that doesn’t work, I’d take a look at the springs. If they are stretched out, they won’t always go all the way up, and be sluggish, so it could do with replacing. If the springs are compressed, they also won’t have the right tension and won’t go up fast enough while going down easy (sounds like my weird aunt putting it that way) If all that fails, take it to a repair shop. Or just deal with it

You’d need to take off half the tubing on the instrument to do that. Besides the lack of a bell flare this is still just a normal trumpet being played in the high register.
