Regardless of what you think about 1 card combos, I think we can all agree playing a game where you get hand trapped 3 or 4 times and pass your turn only for the opponent to normal summon 1 monster that leads to full combo/OTK is the worst feeling in just about any card game.

Pettingcesseur has been a 1 card +8 with an otk attached to it for ages. But the archetype is so fragile that it doesn't matter. The problem is the resilience of Snake-Eyes and the idea of 15-18 handtraps that just chokes out everything that can't play something simillar.

For reasons i'll explain in the future, we actually do need to ban Poplar. Any other singular ban won't significantly nerf the deck aside from Ash, and it just got an OTS UTR print.

I think Banning Oak would be better. Doesn't allow the extra summon for extenders which is what really gives the deck gas imo. Obviously Flam is a close 2nd but its the boss monster of the archetype and I'm not the biggest fan of banning boss monsters of an archetype (unless they're floodgates)

Just ban original sinful spoils so you can't play the wanted engine. A single hand trap stops the entire deck, much easier to ban them pop

I do feel like YuGiOh's identity is found within this forever ongoing powercreep and ever more efficient card design. But I would kill for konami to have a rotating format where they would craft higher or lower powered formats at will. Wanna nuke the format into the stone age? Go ahead. We'll be playing with pebbles for a year or so. Wanna have a format were everything is combo and nothing is banned? Of course Mr Konami. Or maybe you want all matches to become a grindy 30-40 minute control mirror? Please do so.

I think 1 card combos are a case of the Genie being out of the bottle. Konami can ban all generic negates (and they probably will), but they can't exactly ban every deck's centerpiece.

They tried to ban one generic enabler (Linq) and two very generic boss monsters (Barrone and Borrelode) and Snake Eyes on its own deck still topped. The engine is way too good and they can still splash into other things (Fire King and Rescue Ace.)

Theoratically speaking we've had 1 card starters for 10+ years, like tour guide into dante or shaddoll fusion into construct. And if we go by 1 card combos we've had stuff like Zoodiac Ratpier 7 years ago. The concept itself is really damn old, the difference is that the consistency is much higher now since instead of 1 one card starter, we now got 15 one card starters and the end board is much more broken. Getting a 1 card XYZ into Dante is a joke compared to the stuff SE or SHS can do with 1 card. (Heck even normal ratpier ending on like emeral + 2 drident is a joke compared to that) The deck which started this stupid trend was Prank kids with meow meow mu, somehow konami saw this and thought that it would be funny if a bunch of decks get to do this stuff, so they printed shit like circular and wakaushi.

​@@ChoccyMilk1940 All I think of when I see connector is infernoble hand ripping me like 2-3 times with aqua dolphin + smoke grenade while ending on a few negates. Early Covid era somehow traumatized me even more than 2018.

​@@bl00by_I totally agree with you. That board you described is the most oppressive and outright unwinnable in the entire history of the game. The only issue holding the deck was fragility/consistency and the end board was always GG

A thing I would really push back on is the aspect of consistency being the major difference between those older starters and modern 1 card starters. For example as powerful as Dante pass was at its height that is nothing compared to the litany of interrupts that are produced by resolving snash.

It was banned because It was a single card that required multiple hand traps to be interacted with in a meaningful way; even tho SE Ash provides a lot more of advantage, circular required way more efforts tò be stopped. (Don't take me wrong: both are insane Cards, but single card design of circular was waaay worse)

1 card combos that when resolve create an insane amount of advantage are a mistake, especially when you have 10 different ways to access it. Unfortunately, it does not look like Konami is going to stop making archetypes that have little to no weaknesses that are also incredibly resilient.

Couldn't agree more. It just kinda is what it is, there's no real way to fix it without a several hundred card banlist and a hard reset of design philosophy. Bring rush duel to the west btw.

If the common take on tear is good mirror but bad coz its the only playable deck in tear format. Wouldnt the solution be multiple tear level decks that have good interplay with the other decks?

I would tentatively agree, but I also think tears power level was too high for how much it was able to extend. Me personally, an ideal Yugioh world would be one where the main deck mirrors what full powered tear looked like,l as far as deck count, but with the power level toned down and the amount of potential chain links cut in half lol.

The issue there is those decks have to have good interplay but with how yugioh has evolved that would just be 5 flavors swarm and vomit extra deck so just pick your favorite art

one card combo's should only be a feature of mid range decks. Like chimera and swordsoul. There is a hard cap on how much advantage their starters can get you in one turn. Combo decks should never have one card starters.

Fenrir would be in literally every deck. 60% of decks would be straight up unplayable. Voiceless voice would be tier 0. 90% of players would be on stun.

I still haven't had fun like I did with tear format. Not only was it fun to play but it was extremely targeted. Being able to cut ash and just play bystials and crow was simple.

I disagree with engine vs engine being unhealthy. Adventure prankkids was not a “play on your opponents turn” deck. They didn’t actually play on your opponents turn, they just triggered effects to gain advantage on your opponents turn, similar to how flamberge works. There’s no decision making, you’re just triggering prankkids off of a fusion summon for value. Tearlament, labrynth, fire king, Paleozoic, ghoti and probly some others I’m not thinking of atm, actually have decision making, and in some of those cases, it’s also nonlinear. This is what the engine vs engine should look like. If engine vs engine is always hyper linear combos like modern designs have had them be, then the result of that engine vs engine is all but predetermined. Yugioh biggest problem, imo, isn’t even the one card combo (it is a massive problem) - it’s linearity. When every single engine is designed to try and do the exact same thing every game, then that’s 1) either unhealthy for the opponent, 2) unsatisfying for the player that got stopped by hand traps since their deck didn’t get to do its “thing”, or 3) just not strong enough to see play. A nonlinear deck like tearlament has the perfect design space for modern yugioh because it’s powerful enough to compete with hyper linear single-card combos, but also has a nonlinear gameplan which makes every game different to a certain extent. How do you do this without milling in modern cards? Card draw. Look at runick - i do have problems with that archetype, and no it’s not because it banishes cards. Runick’s main form of card advantage by far comes from fountain. My main problem with runick is simply hugin, and runick tip. I think it’d be much more interesting if the deck drew cards from other means and it wasn’t all focused down onto one field spell that can be removed, which usually immediately wins you the game against it.

Everybody complain modern yugioh is too much powerfull, and that old decks cannot keep up, due to them needed a combination of 2 or 3 specific cards. Of course 1 card combos are broken

@user-rh9uu1bg1p Nobody is playing dinos at a high level. Especially not my FTK build. I was ranked 19th on Dueling Nexus while I was exclusively playing Dino FTK for the first 100 matches of this banlist season. 72 wins, 28 losses. I consider it a near auto-win when I see Snake-Eye. I mostly play pure jank lately though because I think it's funny to flip Scrubbed Raid or summon the Buster Blader fusion against Tenpai just to lose to everything else.

Pretty soon, YuGiOh will end up becoming a single coin-flip game. I'd say within 3 years we're going to hit that power creep limit, and then the game will collapse. After all, you'll end up spending (by that point) $4000 for a pile of colorful cardboard that you don't even get to use as everyone who loses the coinflip will just surrender given that FTK will be the only way to win, so there's no point in going second.

Time for Konami Yugioh to evolve. Introduce a new format. The Advanced Format has been around for far too long as the mainstay for competitive play. Set rotation would be nice. Players may complain that would force players to spend money, but they're already complaining about the prices already.

Okay so u want to get rid of 1 card starters ... fine ... but that just means snake eyes will be tier 0 for the next 5 years and theres no reason for me to play absolutely anything else ... and that means konami makes exactly 0 money ... and that means yugioh doesnt work anymore fundamentaly ... the moment they printed the first ever 1 card starters they forced themselfes to continue doing it and theres no way around it u can never ever make anything weaker than what you have already done or ppl just stick with the current tier 0 ...
