When working with children with autism, assessment is an essential piece of the ABA therapy puzzle that I often see overlooked.

Totally agree, i have two diagnosed children ( now 17 and 24 ), five children altogether and an autistic uncle i cared for while raising my children. My dianosed boys were treated terribly in system with as you say so much confusion, every child is different and should have specific unique assessments and stratergies put in place for each individual child. Well that is what i did, took them out of the system, assesed them, used stratergies that worked ( also with my uncle ) and working with their strenghs. We all became less anxious and learning started that was needed to access the adult world. My 24 year old son has learning difficulties and social issues but is now reading Tony Robbins Books etc and is extremely clever with his hands, he is a qualified tiler and plasterer, will easily be able to achieve his dream of renovating his own home. My youngest son had extreme social issues but always had a thirst for knowledge which he would have lost with negative association if i left him in education system. He is now social, loved by all, innovative and at college pursuing his dream career of a highly paid job in IT.

I agree about not enough assessment being done. I went through primary school, secondary school and university only to be diagnosed with Aspergers a year after I graduated. I fully believe if I had the right support earlier, I would have got better grades at school.

Wow that is quite the journey! Good for you for pursuing an assessment!
@ocarinajourney5374
@ocarinajourney5374 5 лет назад
@@marybarbera Thanks :) I think it's because my Aspergers was relatively mild therefore slipped through the system. I had suspected it during school but it wasn't until someone said something during 4th year at uni that I began to pursue an assessment. Now I'm at uni again 6 years later doing a course in Digital Media :)

Thank you for this video.. I am at the moment struggling with my 6yr old son. He has stalled in terms of learning at school, new aggressive behaviour traits coming through. I have taken this up with his teacher and requesting a meeting with the school senco and I want a reassessment in all areas. Thank u AGAIN. Bless you. X

Couldn't agree more with this. I work in a public school and it lacks this most basic part of not only ABA but that of analyzing the whole "piece of pie" of a child vs. one "slice" - we are nearly at two thirds of the way through this school year and there are several children (middle school) who have lost valuable learning time for this very reason. What is your opinion of how ABA is used within the public school systems but not implemented as it should be? Does this cast a somewhat negative reflection upon the science vs. elevating it?

My autistic son loves school and makes straight As in public school, and I am thinking of sending him to a private school for 3rd grade because 3rd grade at public school is an open concept school. Not sure if it's a bad idea or not. My son is not very good at conversation when he is at school.

My sis doesn’t like school much, doesn’t progress much, and I’ve seen online school options for her.. she does better at home. But, don’t want her trapped at home so much.

Assessments first? Yes. But not language. First assess should be: reinforcer. You run the program, the child will tell you what to use.
