you work when the market tells you to. That's not exactly free. Your only flexible when you have a high AR with "dash now"....that ain't freedom either. It's an illusion of freedom.
Most gig-app workers are earning substantially less than minimum wage if they properly account for true expenses, taxes, benefits, etc. Most gig-app workers aren't "up to date" on their taxes. They think they're getting away with it. And maybe they are. For now. The IRS will eventually flag you (remember the headlines from a couple years ago about the IRS hiring 87,000+ new agents? why do you think they're doing that?). The IRS will let your back taxes slide... until the last year or so before the statuary limit. Then you'll get the letter where they whack you for all the back taxes, plus penalties, plus interest. If you ignore that, one morning you'll wake up to find your bank accounts have been levied and your pay garnished.
cars cost a fortune. I guarantee hardly anyone factors in having to buy a new/used car for 25k+. Driving your car around is literally burning tens of thousands of dollars, and working more only make you get taxed more. It's literally a double negative.
I knew a friend that never filed a tax return in his life and the irs never came after him, he passed away at 52. His excuse was if I never file, then they don't know who I am.
Facinating!!! Purely!!! like wow!!!! Dude was smart!!!! There are other ways around taxes but its complicated if you know how to fill out a UCC1 form, my friends mom hasnt paid taxes on her property in over 7yrs!!! She gives seminars but the first lady that was a lawyer figured it out and she got thrown in prison. There was a tik tok video of a Minnesota sherif calling 300,000 minnesotans that figured it out , calling them paper terrorists! Since biden was in power the forms were piling up and gave the courts power to just let them forms stack pile and not look at them!!
I mean his analogy isn't wrong that their whole system depends on us volunteering our time and reporting what they already have on file from businesses we deal with, in fact ,why not make it to where the gig apps have to report the mileage we drove even and make it automatic for all US citizens to where you just answer a few questions on who is in your household so that you can get the appropriate credits and then they either send you a direct deposit, check or a bill that you can do on interest free payments, because that would be the American thing to do instead of trying to make everyone go further into debt.
Some CPAs have a stamp on there work to where they are ''responsible'' if anything happens! My limo driver buddy told me this. I been using a cheap cheap CPA! So I am still learning this stuff...
I think a big part of the reason people look to gig work is the ability to start doing it without having an interview process. You don't need to be "hired" by some person you interviewed with who likes/doesn't like you out of a pool of candidates. And once you start, the tax things you discussed keep people hooked.
I'm retired. I get a pension. I'm willing to file taxes--I have a much more complicated matter at hand. It's not cuz I'm worried about paying tax on my earnings! Complicated!
I'm forced to make 40k per year doing gig work ... And I do, or im homeless ... I file a loss every year due to the crazy amount of miles I put on my car and the standard deduction the IRS allows. if you know you know
You can file tax and still barely pay any taxes. I think I ended up with 40k in the bank, even after gas and maintenance last year, and paid about 2k in taxes thanks to the mileage write off. I live in the country and do a lot of long drives, so I do a lot of highway miles, which is a lot easier on your car.
I have always paid my taxes. What a lot of people don't know is, that there are a ton of tax credits, when you work a 1099 or what the government is it is a business. Your mileage will be your biggest tax credit. If you buy clothing or shoes that you use in the gig economy that is also a tax credit. If you have traveled somewhere else and do the gig economy in that location, that is a business trip you keep up with all these things your gas, your stay, your food when all you have to do is speak about your business add a meal and that is a business meal. That you can get a tax credit for. Last year I received a refund for nearly $1,000. Because I am meticulous about keeping up with all the things that are included in my business. A lot of people that are not reporting their taxes will eventually get caught.
Pedro, the reason my husband and I are doing DoorDash is because we used to own 2 restaurants but lost both due to running out of money. We owned one restaurant for 3 years but never received a paycheck until we started dashing.
I disagree the number one reason people do this line of work is for the freedom and flexibility not necessarily the pay, because the reality ia many dashers are not making the money they used to due to many variables and factors.
the major reasoning I hear people do delivery work full-time is because of disability or mental health not suitable for an employer. It's literally the people who have trouble getting employed/staying employed, such as failing drug tests, bi-polar, lazy/pessimistic/procrastinator, stealing, arrest/jail records, homeless (difficult to maintain routine), don't speak english AT ALL...etc. The people who have a tough time qualifying for the work force can work in this industry because there is practically zero barrier to entry. Do you have a car and a pulse? Your good. Any store manager would look at these types of people and say, nawh, they will give me a hard time and move onto their next interview.
@@Rizzerio1 except that it’s up to YOU to get up and get out there to make that money. Nobody is waiting for you to punch in and hop on the fryers. That doesn’t sound like a lazy person to me. Some people like the open flexible schedule because they have other gigs to work as well or family things, etc. that a “W2” job wouldn’t tolerate. Some people like use it as stepping stone into actually working for themselves but are to nervous to just jump into the pool and need a nice set of stairs to ease them in. It sounds like you have a lot of thoughts but not actually giving it any thought.
The #1 reason I do it is the schedule...i love choosing when I work, I also love not answering to a big boss man... I love not being punished for not working... And I love being able to get paid instantly
Tax write offs - phone, phone accessories, dash cams, gopro's, home office, accounting software, hot bags, carts, health insurance, milage or car insurance,, gas, car maintenance & repairs, car payments. What am I missing?
Noticed I’m getting larger hits lately and it’s mostly tips. One benefit is CA prop 22 and those low end payments from Doordashes end still has to cover 120% minimum wage plus miles. So the larger the tips and low pay equals more money at the end of the week. More states need to step up and protect their drivers!
@@StofleTheBadger What are you even talking about momma? Subscribers? What? Lmfao 🤣 You Cali tweekin bruh? This why you need to keep that west coast trash out of the rest of the country lmao
I pay my taxes, not my business that they don’t, but if they get caught, don’t cry foul! It’s not a fun part of society, but it is a responsibility of everybody in society.
I was a server; I did everything from fast food to fine dining, for over 3 decades then decided to retire from it literally right before the pandemic hit and have not gone back to a w2. With that said, I am currently in school to be a nurse but will continue with gig work until I graduate.
Whichever President actually makes "no taxes on tips" happen, wins. Sports Gambling is another avenue to make money and never pay a cent of taxes either.
I started because there's no huge commitment. I start when I want or can, I stop and or take breaks when I want to. No overhead either. The only downside is that a hell of a lot of that money goes back into the ⛽. Also, there is this thing called taxable income for contractors and business owners. If you make under a certain dollar amount per year, it's not feasible to do taxes, but then all that money you put into your car's expenses are gone forever. You have to make enough taxable income to get all that money you spent back. It varies by state. I'm in California.
Knowing how tax works and how to use deductions, is just as important as knowing how to earn money on the gig apps. It will take you a weekend of sitting down and reading your countries tax websites to learn. If you don't want to do that and play cowboy not paying taxes, you will eventually get audited and dragged through the hot coals for years of unpaid taxes.
I love paying into the system since I take out of it through SSDI, I put 20 years of on the books work to become disabled, I'm happy to pay the taxes to keep my earned income credits up. Being American is pretty dank.
I use my W2 job to over pay.. claim 0 and add 10% more per pay period so that when I have to claim my earnings on gig work... I've basically already paid it.
Anyone getting away with not paying taxes, good for them, however, if they ever do get caught, it's not worth the stress and all the extra fees and penalties (legal issues, etc) that they will have. Id rather pay the damn taxes.
I’m retired. I DoorDash for spending money, so I don’t have to pull any money out of my pension. I want to let it grow while I am still able to do something to earn money. Also, love the flexibility so that I’m available for my family if they need me.
The sad thing is, is that the markets and the gig apps are now showing a steep decrease in earnings and as far as the tax man one mistake during an audit in taxes in the last 7 years can lead to multiple years of audits going back to 10 years costing thousands. How do I know? From working in the tip industry for years since the 80s. One audit cost me 5 years of repayment. Not good.
There’s no way for him to be paying $0 in taxes on his $1k weekly income unless he’s barely breaking even, or losing money even lol. There’s only so much you can write off on your income when directly incurring the expenses to generate said income. Is he spending a total of $1k (whether it be in the form of depreciation or cash flow) to make that $1k? If so, that’s not a sound business plan just because you don’t want to pay any taxes. I understand maybe how you could potentially reduce your taxable income by a significant amount (by incurring depreciation, variable expenses like gas, etc); but creating a 100% tax shield on that income in this particular industry doesn’t seem realistic, unless you’re committing tax evasion.
Well, don't forget you can also write off your business with mileage, office supplies, even partial rent your telephone and a few other ways. Electric many ways to write off. With my various gig jobs, there are various deductions where I don't want to pay any taxes. And you're not doing nothing illegal if your business is taking a loss, which 80%of SB owners are doing!!
@@lisajandro1662nah…Kamala was the deciding vote in the senate to go harder after people getting tips. She’s only pandering to gain votes from uninformed people
@faustinofernandez6394 Actually, this has been talked about for decades, he was the first that brought it up in this cycle. Truth is a President can't make it happen. Congress has to pass a bill, then the president can sign it into law.
Not only do I not pay taxes at the end of the year but I actually get a return because of my child tax credits. The expenses I pay out during the year evens out so I owe no tax. The reason behind this is because of gas and oil purchases. That's my tax same as if you buy oil or energy stocks the government will give you a tax credit for contributing to oil and energy or housing. That's why real estate pays no tax as well. And as far as a W2 if you choose to opt out of taxes and handle your own tax at the end of the year you won't owe as much as you think. They take more tax from your check than they are supposed to that's why they give you a return. If you handle your own tax out of 50k a year you might owe between $800-$2000 depending on certain factors. If you have kids you might not owe at all they will just take it from your tax credit.
I paid taxes on my side jobs, but then went to do the math how much I actually made. Gas, mileage, maintenance, down time, it all adds up. Vehicle maintenance is expensive. $50 oil change, one tire is about $75 cheapest to include Mount balance. Other maintenance or month. Blah blah... Usually is not worth it unless you get nice tips.
I just listened to over an hour of the democratic national convention and I laighed so hard when Biden said we have had a great economy the last four years. I mean who in there right state of mind would believe this? 😂🤣😂
My reason to do it besides trying to pay off my credit cards off faster is I have ADHD pretty bad and it helps to satisfy my urge to always move lol. So I guess you can say I get paid to help with a mental problem lol. Hope you are having a great day sir bet on you!
I truly believe you the DoorDash feds homie cause you always saying so low key snitch 🤦🏾♂️ like you & dasher when yall talking about the DoorDash glitch. I was avg 35 hunnid a week with that shit you haters start talking about it & boom…it’s patched
Pay my quartiles, home owner so I kinda have too. Had em pulled aside last year but this year it's been extra grind when they are due because it's been a paycheck to paycheck kind of year.
Also, the last w2 job I had was weird, when I went to file taxes I thought i was gonna get money back, my CPA told me that my company was only paying 17% in taxes which I got no return for making almost 48 thousand dollars. That explained why my paychecks were almost identical to when I made 35 an hr from a previous w2 job!!! They dont tell u this crap in the ''interview'' LOL
I guess, if you have only gig as income, & do not file a tax, you may skip paying tax... for a time, but, unless you leave the country, The IRS will eventually find you, tax, penalties, & interest... Why don't they pay us interest on what we Over Paid when we file? Most of what I ern is W-2, but if you don't pay 'quartile' what you may owe with your gig work, That is a $105 fine. Who knew? My 2023 lesson, ... still watching ... & Thank you for your videos :-) Remember, Gig work is not a 'job' no W-2... I have always paid my tax, been working for almost 50 years... as long as The Lord wakes me up, I work, pay tax, & try to have fun with that. After all, if you can make your work into a game, it is fun :-) Again, Thank you for your videos :-)
I pay yearly, and it's not too bad because I utilize all the available deductions, and a tax professional. It's not too much honestly, nowhere near the 20-30% people think after all the business expenses. However, I chart miles and save all receipts on gasoline and car expenses, business cell phone, unlimited 5g plan et al., in case Uncle Sam wants to waste his time auditing me. I'd rather pay the tidings than worry about the IRS police knocking on my door with a warrant!
Pedro, i am parnoid, I dont trust the govenment I,I been doing gig work for 10 months have 16000 on tax write offs, My question is ,is what can the big brother do to us!!!!
If you take enough trash some trips will technically be a 0 dollar gain or a tax write off, but if you actually wanna make money you will have some profit and decline such trips. Its all how you work it. I pay taxes as a full time driver but its less tax than if I worked a W 2 that's for damn sure!
9:34 I really dont know what the ''right thing is'' because I watch so many youtube gig workers saying u can do this and u cant do that, then later that youtuber says u can do that? My tax guy makes 40k a yr and pays 500 in taxes. He told me I can write off lunches etc... A youtuber said u cant do that and then later says u can do that, i wont mention his name. But anways I mostly cook at home anyways and rarely eat fast food etc... But my theory was I could buy a used hybrid every 2yrs with 40k miles on it after making calculations on a w2 job vs our gig work!!! I mean doing gig apps full time!!!
People of all backgrounds do this work for a number of reasons. But the apps accept you for one reason. Your car!! This sector of the economy does not even exist without your car. Your gas. Your insurance. You are actually superfluous!!!
Don’t pay quarterly why would you front your money to uncle Sam? I once was paying $500 quarterly on my eBay business. Yeah next year I’m just gonna write miles and gas
Most DoorDashers have either worked some job in the food industry or delivery or taxi job. I have a full tine job being a server and I DoorDashers for supplemental pay.
@patriciastanley2849 Thank you for letting me know. I will try to find a good CPA that will help! I did the standard mileage deduction and subtracted hot bags, car washes, phone mount, a little home office stuff, etc. It didn't feel right, no more than I made...to have to pay!
Facts 💯 and if his friend is saying he's making $50k a year doing DD which I know is a lie and he hasn't paid any taxes he will be in for a big surprise in no time. Uncle Sam wants his cut there ain't no free lunch here brudda
Meanwhile you trash your car get no sick pick no benefits. Whatever tax benefits you get are gone when you have to replace your car every 4 years not to mention other maintenance. Then all these gig drivers go on Medicare of the state equivalent and W2 people have to pay for that expense and then you gig workers complain when people don’t tip when they are paying almost double with fees When that gig worker turns 65 then they want all the safety nets that they didn’t pay into.
@@Lightdog555 You made valid points but if you want to bring up gig workers going on Medicaid debate let's mention the following. How about all the printed money given away in foreign aid to every country in the world? How about all the hand outs the government is giving to illegal aliens that never worked or earned that right at the American tax payers expense? How about all the money given away for decades to food stamp, welfare, and section eight housing recipients that are running and, know how to run game on the system at the tax payers expense? The reality is gig workers paid taxes when they worked a W2 or 1099 way before the gig economy ever existed ever thought about that? At least gig workers are working tax paying citizens not sitting around waiting for a handout at the tax payers expense. So your rant about Medicaid and gig workers is invalid.
@@bballah9969 Those are just what aboutism nothing more. You’re taking a small insular issue and trying to make it bigger than what it is. I’m not saying people shouldn’t do gig work. USA need a major overhaul on many aspects of life. You’re not incorrect in some of your points but again I am sticking to the narrow question that was asked in the video.
