The #1 Tip for Spot and Stalk Hunting

My #1 tip for spot and stalk hunting…
This comes from hunting 3-4 months every year with beginners where mistakes are even more unforgiving. I won’t claim to be the best hunter, but working with groups of people (the more people, the higher risk of alerting animals) and beginners in particular (not usually well-educated on avoiding detection) means I have learned a thing or two about spot and stalk hunting.
My first suggestion is the create a field of fire BEFORE the animal walks into view. Many times, especially in thick brush, it is very challenging to get a good shot on an animal even if they are close. If you can see an animal walking through a clearing, setup in the clearing beforehand so you have a good field of fire without needing to move much.
Second, it can be valuable to make some kind of ungulate noise right when the animal is in a good position. I might make a “bahh” goat noise or something that captures the attention of the animal and stops them in their tracks - even for a couple of seconds! This is a risky maneuver if you aren’t ready to take the shot because they will now be aware of your presence. However, if you need just a moment to keep the animal still, this tactic may help.
Finally, check your wind! This is the #1 thing to be aware of while spot and stalk hunting because animals have a keen sense of smell. This sense of smell allows them to understand the past, something most people don’t realize. They can understand when an animal (including human animal!) moved through a region by scent alone.
If any of these things, and the wind in particular, doesn’t cooperate with your hunt, this is where hunting can become a spiritual practice. In life, there are many things we cannot control. How someone else behaves, what happens with the economy.
All we can do is our best and try again. Good luck!

The use of senses while hunting is such a great way to connect to our ancestors, as this isn’t a way we use our body within our society. Love the way this video gives some insight into different tactics and perspectives of approaching the hunt.

As someone who has never hunted, the level of focused awareness needed to not be smelt by an animal is fascinating. Very informative video. Also, thoroughly enjoyed the Siberian tiger and bear comparison video. Truly incredible to hear the story about the tiger man handling a grizzly!

I appreciate how you explain yourself within each of the videos. It makes the experience flow well and the information easily understood. the words you use when taking time to express and also the humor towards the end. The one with the baby deer got me 😂

Just watched the baby deer. Learned a lot of practical knowledge as we have a large canyon that is full of deer near our home. I love the ending, let the mama take care of it. One of the best takeaways from my sacred hunting experience was remembering my role as husband/father is to support my wife and kids. Not just financially, but emotionally and spiritually. We cannot do that from the bleachers. I am sending my wife to experience FFS at Sedona for this reason.

Very useful technical information for a hunter at any level. More profound, and more rare, is the way you carry it - hunting as a metaphor for life, the inherit meditative aspect of the hunt, the sadness and beauty of taking a life. I strive to connect with and learn from individuals who have journeyed so far into their passion that it becomes the lens through which they view the occuring world. I consider you such a man. Thank you for following your heart and for sharing the lessons you've learned along the way. Aho.

Oh man! I’m on my 3rd year of archery Elk hunting here in Idaho, and I’ve definitely had similar experiences to you. The season just started but I’m hoping the 3rd time is the charm to get my first elk

If you are debating whether or not you should apply to do this, I was there. I took the plunge. How much longer are you going to wait before you demand to become the best version of yourself? My takeaways: Be where they are going to be, not where they are. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Even if you don't get an animal on a hunt, the time and effort is never wasted. Aho.

I saw your Siberian Tiger vs Grizzly (?) Bear video. No comments allowed of course. Weird that you showed nothing from Siberia... As for Tigers and Brown (!) Bears, there are not one single case of any fully grown male killed or even attacked by a Siberian Tiger as the Tigers give grown males a vide berth. Scientists say there is a "limit" for any interaction made by the Tigers towards a Bear at 200 kg. Bears over that the Tigers do not go near. And the largest ever Brown Bear documented killed by a Siberian Tiger was a female in hibernation, weighing around 170 kg. And those are facts that totally contradicts your claims. Therefor you allowed no comments...

You are right. Tigers never mess with adult male Brown Bears. And no Brown Bears 170 kg or more has been killed by Tigers. If I were in Siberia, I would certainly document it with videos for my channel for heavens sake 😅
