I started training in BJJ over 28 years ago. I can remember my instructor (very popular old school competitor) telling us never to go to the guard in a street fight.
To the guy who said: " I would say Purple belt, but I get his point": DUDE! lol. RICKSON SAID BLUE BELT!!!! How do YOU sound saying he does not know what he is talking about? People are insane!
I'm a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt at an MMA and competition Jiu-Jitsu School. You should absolutely never hold guard in the street. Also, due to the fact that Jiu-Jitsu is in fact a business, the belt system in its entirety is very subjective and there is a lot of marketing involved great video coach!
As a 12 year, Bjj Brown belt, Master Army combatives instructor who has trained in MMA kickboxing, etc. I have to wholeheartedly agree with this 💯. I think most of us should forget why we actually started in martial arts and that was to learn how to fight!! The tournaments was just a “legal” way of fighting without getting into trouble if you know what I mean.
I’ve been training Gracie Jiujitsu for over 20 years. Boxing, karate, & Thai boxing throughout the years also With one mind set and that was street efficiency & effectiveness.. Professor you are 💯 SPOT ON. People have become brainwashed, being taught strategies and techniques that will get them killed on the streets and in a real life self defence situation.. what frustrates me, Is that you get these people who train for a few years in Bjj then start “teaching” techniques on social media platforms with no real world experience in street defence.. For me it has become a JOKE.. Thank you for posting this.. I hope more people take heed..
Once you have many practitioners, you will have your belt by the time. but by saying they are unworthy as a Bluebelt, Purple or evena Blackbelt. So what is the definition of worthy of the belt?
Saw BJJ's limitations years ago when I watched wrestlers neutralize BJJ's takedown attempts in mma and smash them from the top position or use their sprawling skills to keep the fight on the feet. BJJ is only one part of the martial arts world and it's fans need to understand that.
@thelinealchamp9027: Off the top of my head: 1) The "Gracie measure stance" used to judge distance is good. 2) drilling entries into body locks that can be used to fold the body and trip if needed 3) Lapel chokes (Be careful, you can kill someone or they can suffer irreversible brain damage if put to sleep for long) 4) TRANSITIONS FROM ONE POSITION TO THE OTHER (FROM BOTTOM TO TOP) while being punched (put gloves on a buddy, wife or big enough child to practice). Note: GRAPPLING SHOULD NOT BE THE DEFAULT. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GRAPPLING FOR IF YOU INDULGE.
That’s a very interesting comment. I’m curious as to why you said lapel chokes over kinds of submissions. Also, love the content I love your honest approach to the martial arts. It’s very refreshing. I have another question too. I’ve been practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu for around 11 months now, and I was thinking of doing another martial art at some point. The only places I can find nearby me are either MMA, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, American kickboxing, and Boxing. If you would recommend One to learn out of these options for self-defense which one would you recommend the most?
@terrywhitley6718: Thanks buddy! But notice how few thumbs up you got on your complement. LOL. They can take from me, but you better not give me too much credit. Now try saying Joe Rogan would have been the greatest UFC fighter ever and you will get 150 thumbs up in agreement. That is how far we have fallen. And you just said I was AMONG the best. LOL
I agree for the most but I would have to say purple belt. Yes I get blue belt is where you really learn most of the functional moves but I think purple is where you really put it together. Unfortunately you’re right BJJ has been ruined by making it more of a sport when it’s designed to be a self defense system. I just wish I could find a school that focuses more on self defense than tournaments.
Even the casual fan was clowning Glover Texiera for giving Alex his black belt, considering that there was no grappling in the fight with jamahal hill. It was so brazen and insulting to the intelligence of everyone present.
I agree with you! I love BJJ, I am a brown belt but I have to say that American normie culture and overemphasizing of competition vs self defense ruins jujitsu as a self defense discipline! I now realize the I am not a complete grappler and I don't fault my instructor for it but the culture of the sport overall! Even before starting jujitsu I wanted to practice judo but I decided to get a bjj brown or black belt first because it was harder and longer time wise! I still cross trained with judokas and wrestlers from time to time! However I observed the my stand up and takedown gave is lacking! I want to pursue a second degree in martial arts this time in judo and to black belt level! I am more of a guard passer than a guard puller in bjj but even I pull guard too often! This is not a good habit to have in a self defense scenario! Once again I love bjj but the criticism you laid out in this video is very much constructive and your points are valid! Jujitsu guys lake to kiss 💋 each other's asses and pretend the bjj is the best self defense martial art in the world! It's very much like a cult! We bjj guys need to do some introspection, we need a reality check and a dose of healthy self criticism!
I'm not familiar with all the belt levels of bjj but I noticed something interesting. This bjj blue belt named Kanna Asakura competes in MMA and grappling only contest and beats everyone with her wrestling. She's been learning western wrestling since she was a small child. Kanna pulls off submissions against people fine and she's not a brown or even a purple belt.
Khabib use to wear a shirt that said "if Sambo was easy, it would be called jujitzu"........ im not calling anything easy, i jjst thought it was funny when he use to wear it

It was inevitable that BJJ went the money route. TKD went the WTF route for the Olympics, not the ITF, which actually has practical techniques.. Just follow the money.
I don’t mention BJJ as a separate Martial Art it is Catch Wrestling. Mitsuyo Maeda learned catch wrestling from Frank Gotch and then he transferred it to the Gracie’s
Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo student and he perfected his skills by fighting wrestlers. It's not like he learned everything he knew from Frank Gotch, if they ever met each other.
I totally agree! I'd also say that same thing happened to Judo to an extent. Lots of its important self-defense techniques are no longer taught. Judo sport though still beautiful is no longer the original Martial Art it was. That being said, Kosen Judo (only Newaza) is still practiced in Japan. I personally think that well rounded MMA (High level MMA) can be great as self-Defense just as combat SAMBO is.
Its crazy coz the gracies didn't let certain wrestlers compete in the ufc and made bias matches in royce's favor but the thing is would the west even know about submission grappling without the gracies bias towards royce getting easier matches?
Grappling with a knife or a stick changes everything. Check out Dog Brothers Martial Arts. Sport bjj is like sport karate. They are sports. Training for reality is different. Thanks for this video. I hope people learn from it.
Never ever ever ever…..EVER pull guard in a combative situation. Guard is a survival transition position. Not a place to hang out and get smashed. You only go into guard if you have no other choice and when forced but you better get your ass up and out of it by sweep or escape. Attempt a sub if one is there but do not get smashed holding it. Throwing a sub is also a good way to get someone to fight hard out of it and use the opportunity to get space and get to your feet.
I’ve trained bjj for the last 14 years but I always knew this as truth as long as you have acceptance cause this was always common sense anyway I would like to finish it cause I’m already to deep in it but I see it more a a disciple and a way to stay athletic and healthy
Also, you are one of the most consistent RU-vidrs and you have been stating these facts for years. Once you learn the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu AKA the blue belt curriculum, it's all matt time and you just get more proficient at those core techniques which are the fundamentals which is what you should be working on most of the time
This is pure facts, on the point you made in the beginning about your height, i think the ego struggle most of these people have is that their gyms are actually decent about drilling in the idea of humility in the streets(to a degree, obviously it becomes unsuccessful as they progress), but this keeps them in controlled environments practicing bjj. I say this because as a boy i took quite a bit of tkd and that was what i was repeastedly told in classes(truthfully, what everyone should be told, which is to avoid fighting) however when life erupted and i was faced with year after year of necessary violence, i found it was impossible to utilize tkd and i believe it would be similar with many bjj practitioners. I hope that ramble made at least a bit of since. Thank you for your time and opinions!
The highest percentage submissions in the UFC I believe are 5 1.Rear Naked Choke 2.Guillotine 3.Arm Triangle 4.Triangle 5.Armbar There’s articles about this.
@@itstruyouAO Kimura, and perhaps a few others. I was being generous at 9 actually. The point was that the Blue Belt was the base of BJJ. Something most people don't say.
,AM 12 YEARS!!! I remeber that vids too lol. look at that black beard! I cant belive ive been following you that long i first learned about you from percsion striking but started watching your vids more, Who do you have on Canelo Mungia? i personally think mungia due to his size.
Yes, as long as I've listened to this channel, you have said exactly that about BJJ. You've been very consistent too. Now you've shown irrefutable proof, and straight from the Horses Mouth no less. There can no longer be dispute. How embarrassing for your detractors. I might be enjoying myself just a tad too much, so I'll stop here. Great video.
All these years consistent with the information and application of BJJ. So as the unethical awarding of BJJ blackbetls to NCAA wrestlers with fame. But you all would rather pull guard in front of a chainsaw.
Greetings brother. I cannot disagree. Im not a professional fighter but i grew uo in the 80s through mid 90s at a time where fights were a weekly event throughout nyc. Sports martial arts and regular martial arts are 2 different animals. Pulling guard is dangerous. What I saw that worked on a regular basis before the ufc had its first match on vhs was the following: guillotine, rear naked chokes and arm bars with guard being used momentarily as a transitional move before sinking the hooks in which had to be done quickly. Besides that, boxing, wrestling, judo, a good understanding of kicks without the fancy stuff or an understanding of kickboxing. All of these mixed together. Everyone is built differently so the tools will not be effective for everyone. The belt system recommendations can be made in just about any art form. The midway point gives you the knowledge of what to do according to the situation. Youve been steady on your beliefs and havent wavered. You stand by your principles amd you should continue to do so. Those that disagree can do so and ifnthey get all emotional about it, they can go eat a 🤫
In The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico ( two countries I live in back / forth) which come from the Spanish feudal and pirate traditions which means grab what you have - if you pull guard you will get stabbed probably 50 times. Even the use of brass knuckles is prevalent- you pull guard you will get decked
I didn't watch UFC 300. Can you guys elaborate. The guy who got his black belt didn't use any grappling at all and they still used that to justify giving him his black belt anyways?
I am a brown belt, Sifu, and I remember hearing you saying this many years ago and I whole heartedly agree. I still fully agree and actually I really don't care to learn more bjj technique, I just want to get better at collegiate wrestling, and beginner basic techniques.
Yeah Sayf has highlighted this type of behavior for a decade now. So long that this type of stuff wasn't a surprise. Alex hasnt even fought one decent wrestler or grapller at 185 or 205. He probably won't if he goes to heavyweight. If he fights Jon Jones he'll have to throw that blackbelt into the ocean
Absolutely 💯! Training for sport is not training to protect your life. Also, how you train is how you fight. No point scored karate, no point scored based training. Why do we train, for medals and belts? Or, do we train for self defense? Point scored tournament based training will lose in tournaments to students who train for the streets. I've seen it often.
What you said about Blue belt stuck with me as it was about the time I started to look into JuiJitsu which is going back a few years as I didn't stick with it so I can categorically say what you are saying here is FACTS!
Coach is correct.Pulling guard on the street is terrible because the opponent can ground and pound or body slam on the cement. You need Muay Thai more than BJJ.
On point King! Thanks for a saying this. I’ve been saying it for years myself. I cringe when I see it in videos. The reality issue is why never got into competition.
another great video sir. btw, may we know what are those 9 submissions? I'm sure the rear naked choke and guillotine choke would be 2 of them, but what are the other 7?
Another way to look at it is, OG has always taken the educational potential of this platform seriously. Facts and wisdom all day. Being popular or a personality is a different thing and what most people on YT are pursuing.
@millyyardopeacecraft9778: And chase it with a beer for every time you idiots said BJJ was the ultimate martial art lol. If you don;t like what I say or said or how many times I say it, do to another channel. Don't learn how to keep jokers off your ass by coming to my channel.
The late GM Moses Powell would have wiped the floor with ANY of the competitive BJJ black belts of today. No question. Great video, btw. Joe Rogan, imho, is a drug pusher as well. Not seller, just one trying, imo, to make it attractive to this generation. I wish he would go back where he came from.
As a BJJ, Karate, Boxing, and Muay Thai practitioner and coach, im sorry to say that I 100% agree with you! They nearly destroyed Karate with the emphasis on sporting competitions, and they are doing the same with BJJ.
At least 20 years ago, I watched a bjj class and decided it wasn't for me because they weren't teaching any self-defense, it was all based on sport. When I found your channel, I knew you were the truth because of your rational thinking towards bjj. You're absolutely correct about calling it a cult. Joe Racist Rogan makes me sick to my stomach, especially with that " it doesn't matter, who cares give it to him" comment. From my personal research, the only ones who teach realistic self-defense are David James, Lee Morrison,Geoff Thompson Carl Cestari, Richard Dimitri, Kelly Mccann, The Gracies and yourself.
90% of BJJ techniques are null when you add in striking techniques and will get most of these people 🪦'ed on the streets. The exercise is probably the only useful thing besides the basics.
@@brazilianjiujitsu4838 You need to be honest with what you have said in your comment. Of all the arts you named for doormen, the one you DID NOT need was BJJ! To control people or get them out of the door, The MT clinch and Aikido worked as good or better. I understand that you put a lot of time into getting your ranks, but even Rickson has said you never needed that to learn what you need! Your comment shows that you are in denial of a few things.
I also knew that BJJ was the next American fad martial art. It didn't disappoint. It's why I tended to stay away from formal training, by Asian culture worshippers. My wrestling and boxing while middling...has been pressure tested.
