--------------------------------
Interviews are difficult, there’s no denying that. In fact for some people, they’re downright terrifying.
I’ve been in the recruitment industry for nearly 20 years, and I’ve seen people get paralysed at the prospect of sitting in front of someone that they don’t know, desperately trying to say the right thing that could in turn mean that they get a truly life-changing opportunity.
In truth, success in any interview is entirely down to how much preparation you put in. I’m no mathematician, but it wouldn’t surprise me if success in an interview is directly proportional to the number of hours you’ve spent researching for it.
From my experience, the biggest problem people have is not knowing how to go about their research.
And taking that even further forward, how to prepare answers for questions they’re going to get asked, and that’s because generally, people don’t know what they’re going to get asked.
So the purpose of this video, and the Interview Academy in general, is to dispel any myths and to give you all the tools you need to ace every interview you attend, to know the questions you’re going to get asked in advance, and have brilliant planned answers at your disposal so that you can position yourself as the best person for the job.
This video covers the following job interview questions:
#1. Tell Me About Yourself [0:14]
#2. Why Should We Hire You? [4:06]
#3. What Is Your Biggest Weakness? [7:50]
#4. What Is Your Biggest Strength? [10:58]
#5. What Do You Know About Our Company? [13:40]
#6. Why Do You Want To Work For This Company? [16:42]
#7. Why Are You Leaving Your Current Workplace? [19:46]
#8. What Salary Are You Looking For? [22:42]
#9. Where Do You See Yourself In Five Years? [27:01]
#10. Do You Have Any Questions For Us? [29:16]
For each of the questions, I'll explain why they're asked and the best ways to go about answering them.
Good luck with your interview!

If you're worried or anxious about how to adapt your answers to any of these 10 questions to your situation, put your question in the comments below and we'll do our best to answer them. And if you haven't seen it already, make sure you watch our video on how to answer behavioral interview questions - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-URs2vLAPNT0.html. The advice in it is "literally GOLD", as one commenter put it... :-)

Really useful interview tips and techniques without being too prescriptive like some of the sites. I have an interview tomorrow to a role in a different organisation in the same role so I know I have the skills needed but it doesn’t take away the slight nerves of wanting to come across well, Especially in Skype interviews during Covid-19. This was a very useful watch and has made me think of the main messages to get across without waffling, I like the STAR method also as it helps prevent rambling answers. Thank you, I would definitely recommend this and other videos from The Interview Academy.

great video mate. Thank you for posting it. I always ask the last question to employers: "do you have any concerns about my ability to do the job" and 99% of times they respond nothing back. I guess here in the States they are afraid of lawsuits or who knows what!!

@@TheInterviewAcademy Exactly! Forgive the typos in my last message, I was rushing to catch a train :) Now, if you can upload a video to help me smash the second interview that would be amazing! Anything you need to add in the 2nd stage to clinch it over the other candidates?
@TheInterviewAcademy
@TheInterviewAcademy 5 лет назад
Often Jordan it’s just more of the same, possibly with a greater emphasis on behavioral or competency questions, which we have got a video on (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-URs2vLAPNT0.html). Normally in a second interview the interviewer is looking for specific skills, so can you actually do the job, and culture fit, or will you fit in. Get your head around the STAR technique which I teach in that video, then research the company to death. Anything on Google about them, any news articles, social media, Glassdoor profiles, review sites. Get a feel for what they’re like as a business and identify cross overs with you, both from a skills perspective and how you think you’ll slot in. Other than that, go back over this video because undoubtedly you’ll get asked the same especially if you’ve got different interviewers, which you normally have for a second. Best of luck, and let me know how you get on. James
@theelegantstylist
@theelegantstylist 5 лет назад
@@TheInterviewAcademy Gotcha. I have seen the behavioural video and the STAR technique is a great tool. The company research always stumps me as I'm never sure what sites to search for reviews. All great advice so I'll get to work! Thanks again, much appreciated 👍🏽
@TheInterviewAcademy
@TheInterviewAcademy 5 лет назад
If I was you I'd be looking anywhere I could. Glassdoor is good because it provides reviews from current and past employees. You'll need a filter for some current employees who are obviously making the company sound brilliant (!) but it should still give you a good idea on what goes on. Good news stories are also really impressive, so have they won any big contracts recently, have they been mentioned in the news, have they won any awards? Sounds like you're on the right track though. Hope it goes well, James

Why not ask your current manager what your biggest strength is, and use that when asked in a future interview. Also, when identifying a weakness, if it's something not relevant to the role you're being interviewed for, it's not going to be detrimental.

24:59 "Good interviewers will also ask you what you're currently earning. . ." FYI ~ Many U.S. states prohibit potential employers from inquiring about salary history. www.salary.com/resources/guides/salary-history-inquiry-bans/ Included in that ban (for many states) are inquiries about the value of an applicant's benefits, such as equity, health insurance or other monetary benefits. Job-seekers should research the relevant law for their states.

how do you answer the question "why should we hire you" when you have 1 year of working experience? help please ^_^
@TheInterviewAcademy
@TheInterviewAcademy 5 лет назад
I think the key here is to focus on what you have got, rather than what you haven't. I wouldn't focus on your lack of experience. Instead work out what skills you have and what you bring to the table. Then get hold of a job specification for the job, and work out what skills they're looking for, and then marry the two up. Look for skills you've got that they want. When you know that, the answer becomes much easier, but the key is to properly get your head around what they're really looking for, so take your time going through the job specification. Use the process that I outline in the video - if you follow it, you won't go far wrong. Let me know if you've got any other questions and I'll do my best to help. James

I have a question regarding salary expectations. In the application I was asked what did I expect to receive. After doing research on glassdoor and indeed, it listed a salary range. As such, I placed that salary range on the application. After the first interview, I was advised what the salary range is. Sadly, I was $100k short. How does one recover from this if a offer is made based on my expectation and not with the position allots for?
@TheInterviewAcademy

Hi Charles - I just wanted to clarify that you were $100k short and that wasn't a typo, as that seems like a huge amount to be short by? James

These are some solid tips...however, I have to admit, in my case, every job I got was based on lies and deception about my abilities and skills. And I've not been fired from any of the jobs I've done over the years. Even this guide is essentially a form of manipulation. It would be lovely to live in a world with open and frank engagement with others, but I'm not sure the human brain is capable of it.

Your examples are of someone who has extraordinary accomplishments. An ordinary person cannot answer like that and will sound like a poor candidate.
@TheInterviewAcademy
@TheInterviewAcademy 4 года назад
Hi Teresa - the goal is to pull something from your career that you can adapt and use as your answer. The ones we used in the video are examples we've heard over the years, and we didn't consider them to be extraordinary as such. The trick is to write down your achievements and work out which ones could be adapted for each of the questions. Hope this helps. James
@redhotgalego
@redhotgalego 5 лет назад
My problem with all these videos with advice is that they are written for people with insane resumes. Like, "answer this question by telling them that you are the best salesperson in the world and use these ridiculous stats to prove so". No shit, Sherlock. At that point in my career I won´t need this advice, give me answers that I can use in the interview to get the job where I can make those achievements, not the jobs after.
@TheInterviewAcademy
@TheInterviewAcademy 5 лет назад
Thanks for your comment, but after helping thousands of candidates over the years - of all levels of abilities - the principles and structure behind answering these interview questions is the same, regardless of ability or depth of experience. We've used examples in the video to try and give you some guidance on how you could structure your answers. Clearly those exact answers won't be relevant to everyone watching (!), but if you use that basic structure and adapt it to your own experiences and skills, you won't go far wrong. Hope this helps.

To me the only reason someone would ask that is because they’re keen for nobody else to snaffle you up! So I would say it’s a good sign. One way you could answer it would be “yes, but given how much I love this opportunity I would cancel every other interview if you made me a satisfactory offer.” Does that help? James

@@TheInterviewAcademy Thank you 😊 Im waiting on a call, I was told I would know by the end of last week? Should I send a follow up email?

Personally, I would. When you write it though err on the side of not pestering or being too aggressive. It's a fine line to tread, particularly over email as it's impossible to ascertain tone in an email. Maybe if you feel comfortable enough you could call them instead? James

Question #11: Who the hell do you think you are applying for this job that you're clearly unqualified for?

Ha ha - I've felt like asking that question myself a couple of times, especially with people who have lied on their CV just to get an interview, only for it to unravel in the interview. Key takeaway is: Don't lie on your CV and you'll never get asked this question!

How the hell are you supposed to prepare for an interview when in reality you don't actually know what any of the questions will be? This is a list of the 10 most common, that a lot of preparation for 10 questions when you might only get asked 1, what about the other questions in an interview. How bad is it going to look when you have managed to rattle off an answer to only one question with confidence and crumbled at the rest?

There's loads of ways you can prepare for an interview without knowing the questions. The first thing is to make sure you've got an answer for the all the common questions, even if you only get asked one. Just doing that puts you at a big advantage over the competition. The next step is to get your head around behavioral or competency questions, and watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-URs2vLAPNT0.html to understand what they are and the strategy for answering them. The final tip is to learn everything you can about the business and the role you're being interviewed for. Doesn't matter what you learn or where you learn it - Google, newspapers, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, review sites, etc. Just get as much knowledge about the business, what they've achieved, any awards or newsworthy stories and take notes / learn them. It's safe to assume that you'll know your career inside-out, so you should be able to answer any direct questions about your skills and capabilities with ease and confidence. I promise you, the vast, vast majority of people you'll be up against will do very little preparation for an interview, and that's after 20 years of recruitment experience and seeing it for myself. The really impressive people are the ones that have gone the extra mile and put some leg-work in. Just doing the above, then taking notes and making some questions you want to ask at the end of interview will make you wow the interviewer. Hope this helps, James

Those 10 questions are more than enough to answer almost all common (non-technical, not-job-specific) questions - especially if you prepare your own answers based on your experience and yourself. I find 2-3 questions within this video overlapping with another (i.e. one Q/A answering part/full of another Q). When you extensively and positively prepare to ALL 10 questions, by writing them down; you'll definitely not comment "how the hell" response! Think of these ten questions as ten math operations (add, divide, subtract, square [root], log, ratio,....). Once you master all of them and a combination of them - would you ever ask that there can be umpteen/infinite math problems? Do you want ALL those infinite problems to be solved by book/teacher/video?
