I would like to upload content about my board game hobby, but I'll keep it as just that. Some may see it. Some may not, but I won't care much in that aspect.

Something I have just realised with your comments. Watching content creators also tends me towards trying new games and not playing my existing ones. A mindset I need to address.

@@BoardGameComore often than not I end up watching a preview video to a game I scrolled by after a preliminary glance and then end up buying or backing after the video 😅

I think the worst part is the cult of the new... there are so many great games that I wish there were more videos about, but because they are a couple years old at this point, there isn't really a benefit to a content creator to make a video about it.
@ChaBox998
@ChaBox998 29 дней назад
I'm sure when these older games were new, they had their moment. The ones that had few videos probably did not make much ripples in the community. The problem, I think, with board games, is that there are too many games for each of them to get decent attention from the community. If you are lucky, your favorite game might have a following on its own, but if you happened to love a game that is less known to the gaming community in general, you are not gonna find much coverage for it. Contents creators really do matter a lot in promoting games.

I agree with all of this. Being a tiny creator I am interested in how you kept going when you were small and were getting no return on your investment of time. I am working in a slightly different video model but am still easily spending 40 hours a week shooting scripting and mostly editing. When I am deep in the hole of grinding a video out I often ask why I am doing it. I certainly would prefer to do it over my day job but that is not likely anytime soon and have only spent money in pursuit of this. I love playing games and making videos about them it’s just such a time suck with personal sacrifices and no compensation that it becomes hard to justify taking the time away from my family.
@BoardGameCo

Unfortunately, there's a reason that high quality content is so sparse in the space, you really have to get that audience for it to be worth the time and energy. It's something that shut up and sit down has done but barely anyone else.

This is why I don't care to become a full time board game reviewer. Whenever I think about trying to grow, it ends up being making stuff that I don't want to make. So I'm happy making things I want to make, and I've been kinda trying to keep it at least a little consistent for the algorithm 😅 But I also now have 4 different RU-vid channels because of making things I want to make 😆

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. As content consumers, I don't think we typically consider what creators have to work through in order to do what they do. You have always been ready to pull back the curtain, so to speak, and let us see what the reality of your job is like. The one thing that surprised me while watching this piece is that there was no mention of the time requirement and the potential pressure that puts on family life. I am not trying to get personal, and you may have figured out how to find a place of contented balance, but I can only imagine that you invest more hours per week in your work than most people do in their "regular" jobs and that potentially means that you are away from family when you wish you didn't have to be.

I couldn't do it for so many reasons. Don't have the talent, don't have the skills, don't have the drive to develop the talent or skills. However the biggest part of it is I'm not going to play games I'm not interested in. I'll bend this rule slightly for fiends and family but otherwise hard pass. I'm also strongly against the current drive to try to monetize anything you enjoy which is the quickest way to turn your hobbies into an anchor around your neck.
@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 29 дней назад
Yep, I generally agree with that. 1000%. It happens to be that doing this hasn't killed my enjoyment for the hobby at all, it has just channeled it differently

I just recently decided to dip my toe into the pool of content creation. The worst part, by far, is that 50% + of my hobby time is now spent on video production (which isn't my hobby). Very cool video, as usual, Alex!

All really true points. I have a friend that does some review and recently I told her "I would not want to do what you do. Yeah free games is great but the obligation that goes with ? I would not want that. I like the freedom of playing what i want when i want". About the fact that you don't make everyone happy ? Because you are critical ? Even if you said just good things about all the games, that would still make unhappy the one that hates them" reviewer is about being neutral and personal and subjective. If people just come here to hear what they want to hear, then a mirror would cost less than a computer or a phone right ? Thank again for everything and for making those videos about your job and you as a person

Interestingly for publishers there's no distinction between influencer and reviewer (of new games). For them you are an influencer and part of the marketing machine.
@BoardGameCo
@BoardGameCo 27 дней назад
I disagree. An influencer represents a safe bet. A reviewer represents a risk.
@nirszi
@nirszi 27 дней назад
@@BoardGameCo I agree with that distinction. But at the end of the day any review that is say, 3.5 and above will be treated as a great marketing piece. And btw I'm not saying it as a negative thing.

The fact that you can do what you love and get paid is rarity in this world. I appreciate your update videos on your game rankings. Videos about your 'All time favorite games' is okay but it's generally the same each time so updates to other good games that may helps me focus my radar as someone who is limited on time wants to know what is holding a professional gamers attention. Thank you and keep making videos.

J from 3 Minute Board Games talked about the burn out from constantly playing new games in his recent "10 Games You Can Play Forever" video. Really good watch for both content creators and regular gamers as well who might be feeling a bit of burn out from the unending games churn. The only channels I can think of that aren't always looking at new games are ones focussing on the proper lifestyle games, mostly the LCGs. But even then it's a mix of old content with the new expansions/packs, and what's coming up.
@BoardGameCo

Yep, there's definite burnout on some aspects. Fortunately, I appreciate so many other aspects more.

I think maybe on shabbos because you can't record videos anyways you should try and pick atleast one game from your top 100 from last year and play it that way you're always playing the games that you want to play. I don't know if you already do that but that way atleast you will see half of your top 100 each year. (And if you manage do two games you will play your full top 100 every year)
