All too often, the question of Palestine is framed as an eternal conflict arising from ancient ethnic or religious hatreds, with questions regarding the origins of the state of Israel and the legitimacy of land claims reduced to matters of scriptural interpretation. Such views entirely omit the actual history of Palestine and the Zionist movement. The colonization of Palestine, a process still playing out before our eyes to this day, has definite historical origins at the turn of the 20th century, when Zionism was born and the encroachment of Palestinian land began. Historian Rashid Khalidi, author of The Hundreds' Year War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917- 2017, joins The Chris Hedges Report for a look into this essential history, and how it can help us frame Israel's present war on Gaza.
Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, and the author of several books.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this discussion with Rashid Khalidi. I had gotten his book and his speaking of it is unstoppable. Comments of almost all the shit going on and in the media just substantially what I'm seeing and frustrated. And I can say vocalizing any of this stuff closes the door with most friends and possibly considered antisemitic, which I'm far from that.
@qtsmlearning
@qtsmlearning 5 месяцев назад
Don't be intimidated by the use of declaring a person anti Semitic if s/he doesn't support Zionist apartheid and oppression of Palestinians. Palestinians are Semitic too. Israel doesn't have the moral high ground. If we lose friends because we are standing for right, what have we really lost? Nothing. We need to assess who we are allowing in our inner circle.

I would say that when people understand the difference between Zionism (Christian and Jewish) and Judaism, and how Zionism describes as Antisemitism any critique to the state of Israel, then some people start to change their views.

I've come to think the main problem is we don't share an accurate history. He was entirely right about it being generational at 60 years old mine was raised to think of ourselves as protectors of innocent Jews, they are all good, and especially after 9/11 Arabs Muslims are all Islamists. I struggled to understand young American Jews supporting the Palestinians until really opening myself up to a much larger narrative. My friends and family don't really have that desire, they're busy people, these are deeply held beliefs we learned in childhood that have largely gone unquestioned and been reinforced: Jews good intolerant murderous Arabs want us dead. It may require these senior leaders to die off because they refuse to hand over the reigns, and they're living longer. Biden, Netanyahu, Pelosi, Trump, Feinstein, ......

This is the Ottoman census of 1878 indicated the following demographics for the Jerusalem, Nablus, and Acre districts. Muslim - 403,795 or 85.5% Christian - 43,659 or 9.2 % Jewish - 15,001 or 3.2% Jewish (Foreign-born) - Est. 10,000 or 2.1% As you can see, most of the 3.2% Jews were new immigrants themselves. The Arab people have been in that area for hundreds of years. They migrated there peacefully and had nothing to do with expelling the “original Jews”.

What happened to the Jews living in East of the Jordan River became the Emirate of Transjordan, to be ruled by Faysal’s brother ‘Abdullah? The Jews living there disappeared. Not a single soul remained. And that remains the west of the Jordan River became the Palestine Mandate. So u are going to expel the existing Palestinian Yishuv Jewish communities living there? How about 1880s mass immigration during the Ottoman Empire bet 1881 and 1903? That is only the 1st Aliyah of Jews. This only highlights Dr. Khalid's narrative of his biases against the Jews. There are many points that he did not bother to discuss.

The Balfour Declaration had no actual authority... Britain’s governance of Palestine, purportedly under the mandate scheme of the League of Nations, never gained a lawful foundation. The League of Nations had no power under the League Covenant to attribute legal significance to the Mandate for Palestine, or to give Britain a right to govern.

Or has ever been?????????? What you don't know is a lot. You don't speak for anyone but yourself so don't pretend you know better. You are entitled to your opinion but not everyone elses. Do you think what Hamas did was ok? Have you seen any of the videos that were shown? Sickening. A young german girl who was jewish had attended the music festival and when Hamas terrorists attacked with no provocation they indiscriminately slaughtered everyone they could get at the music festival. There is video of the young german girl being raped while others stood around and kicked and punched her. Afterwards they dragged her naked body through the streets while Palestinians cheered like it was a celebration. Another man called his mother proudly declaring how he had taken off an Israeli mans head with a shovel screaming how proud she should be that she taught him so well. Did you see the video of the man with his small child who he held being tied together to and then set ablaze? Don't pretend that you know everything there is to know about the relationship Israel has with the Palestinians. You see one side because the media controls what you see. Why is it up to Israel to fix this problem? Egypt also borders the Gaza strip and they don't want anything to do with the Palestinians. They won't open their border to them. Why is that? Don't condemn what you don't fully understand. We need the truth from all angles not just one and from where I'm standing what I know is that this conflict was instigated by the Palestinians. I would like to see an end to all wars but as long as men decide to do wicked things the retaliation will continue to follow in the form of another war.

Zahir Muhsein was a Palestinian leader of the pro-Syria As-Sa'iqa Ba'athist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization between 1971 and 1979. In an interview with Trouw Magazine, 31. March 1977 he stated....."The Palestinian people do not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity exists only for tactical reasons. The establishment of a Palestinian state is a new tool to continue the fight against Israel and for Arab unity. If Palestine were an Arab state, at any point in recorded history, why was there no mention of them? Because there never was an Arab Palestinian nation, nor any nation called Palestine, ever.

Hamas Minister of the Interior and of National Security Fathi Hammad, aired by Al-Hekma TV on March 23, 2012. Stated..... .....we all have Arab roots, and every Palestinian, in Gaza and throughout Palestine, can prove his Arab roots - whether from Saudi Arabia, from Yemen, or anywhere. We have blood ties. Personally, half my family is Egyptian. We are all like that. More than 30 families in the Gaza Strip are called Al-Masri ["Egyptian"]. Brothers, half of the Palestinians are Egyptians and the other half are Saudis. Who are the Palestinians? We have many families called Al-Masri, whose roots are Egyptian. Egyptian! They may be from Alexandria, from Cairo, from Dumietta, from the North, from Aswan, from Upper Egypt. We are Egyptians. We are Arabs. Salma Fayumi, a resident of Kafr Qasim (Palestin/Israel), demonstrated her cooking prowess on the show "Master Chef." Fayumi proudly showed off her Kushari dish that she prepared, "Egyptian cuisine made of rice and lentil." "My family came from Egypt, from Faiyum, and I am Salma Fayumi from Faiyum," the cook from Kafr Qasim said. From 1917 However, his ignore this little piece of history. How willfully ignorant you are. Pre-Roman Period Ancient Civilizations (Before 1000 BCE): The region was inhabited by various ancient peoples, including the Canaanites. It's mentioned in Egyptian and Mesopotamian texts. Israelite Kingdoms (c. 1000 - 586 BCE): Biblical accounts describe the formation of the Kingdom of Israel and the subsequent Kingdom of Judah. This period saw the rise of Hebrew culture and religion. Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian Rule (8th - 4th Century BCE): The Assyrian Empire conquered the northern kingdom (Israel) in 722 BCE. The Babylonians conquered the southern kingdom (Judah) in 586 BCE, leading to the Babylonian Exile. Persian rule began in 539 BCE, allowing Jews to return and rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Roman Period Roman Conquest (63 BCE): The Romans conquered the region, which became part of the Roman Empire. Jewish-Roman Wars (66 - 135 CE): A series of revolts against Roman rule, including the Great Revolt (66-73 CE) and the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-135 CE). These revolts were brutally suppressed, leading to significant Jewish casualties and diaspora. Byzantine Period (4th - 7th Century CE): Christianity became the dominant religion under Byzantine rule. The region experienced relative stability and prosperity. Islamic and Crusader Periods Early Islamic Period (7th - 11th Century): Arab Muslim armies conquered the region in the 7th century. The Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates ruled, with Jerusalem becoming a significant Islamic center. Crusader Kingdoms (1099 - 1291 CE): European Crusaders established several states, including the Kingdom of Jerusalem. This period was marked by conflict between the Crusaders and Muslim powers. Mamluk Rule (1291 - 1517): The Mamluks, based in Egypt, defeated the Crusaders and took control. They maintained Islamic dominance and stabilized the region. Ottoman Period Ottoman Rule (1517 - 1917): The Ottoman Empire conquered the region. It was administered as part of the Damascus Eyalet and later the Jerusalem Sanjak. Relative autonomy for local communities under the millet system. British Mandate and the Creation of Israel British Mandate (1917 - 1948): Post-World War I, the League of Nations granted Britain the mandate over Palestine. The Balfour Declaration (1917) supported a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine. Tensions rose between Jewish and Arab communities. United Nations Partition Plan (1947): Proposed a partition of the land into Jewish and Arab states. Accepted by Jewish leaders but rejected by Arab leaders. Establishment of Israel and Arab-Israeli Conflict (1948): Israel declared independence in 1948. This led to the first Arab-Israeli war. Significant Palestinian displacement (Nakba). Post-1948 Developments Further Conflicts: Numerous conflicts, including the 1967 Six-Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Peace Efforts and Ongoing Conflict: Attempts at peace, including the Oslo Accords (1990s), have seen limited success. The region remains a focal point of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with issues like settlements, borders, and the status of Jerusalem unresolved. 21st Century Developments: Continued conflict and peace negotiations. International efforts to resolve the conflict, though a comprehensive peace agreement remains elusive.

I want to bring to your attention my issue with the historical data provided. Specifically, I have a problem with Khalidi's book. He seemed to be biased in his approach as he selectively presented historical facts to support his narrative. In contrast, I have presented factual information. It is unfortunate that some individuals make baseless and childish comments instead of relying on facts. However, their behaviour only serves to prove my point. I do not expect such individuals to realise this fact.@@walter1932

Evil and Genocide triumph bcos good men are passive. They sit idly while the Palestinian holocaust occured. One of the reasons why United Nations was formed after WWII was to ensure effective intervention can occur in the future b4 another potential Jewish Holocast can recur. Apparently it failed miserably based on ethnic hatred. UN does not serve and protect human rights when powerful nations are the perpetrators. The Palestinian Holocaust still can occur.

Tremendously informative recounting of the historic and political emergence of the present status quo with all its inherent or inbuilt faultlines that have led to today’s status quo with all its horrific consequences, deadlocks and unending conflicts. The presumptious, nefarious and characteristically racist role of the retreating British Empire as it ended its so-called « protectorate » in Palestine in 1948 but carving up the region into inevitably divisive and destabilizing enclaves without due regard for the millennial indigenous Palestinian Semite populations who had welcomed the Jewish refugees fleeing unimaginably traumatic genocide in Europe - whose leaders looked the other way as the atrocities unfolded. And no they did not come from Canaan as they claim. It was the Philistines who lived there & waged wars against Israel. The Philistines originated from Greece & Cyprus & were known as the boat people. And yes the lived & traded in Gaza.

No it was not. Here is the historical context. @@accrillia It's silly to bring ancient history into the discussion. Ancient history is irrelevant. The Zionist movement of the past 100 years is the primary cause of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The first official census in Palestine was conducted by the British authorities in 1922. A total population of 757,182 individuals was found, of whom 590,890 were Muslims, 83,794 were Jews, and 73,024 were Christians. Palestine should have been a Muslim-controlled country, but Zionist Jews from other countries flooded into Palestine. Zionists claim that Palestine was "a land with no people for a people with no land." That's a lie, of course. With the help of Britain, the US, and the UN, the Zionist Jews stole Palestine from the Muslims.
