The BPO has quite a number of women, just not in the cello section. You have to remember these positions come up very rarely. When you get this post you can be in it for 30 or 40 years. There is another woman in the section. She may have opted not to go on tour.

so? apparently, when there was a vacancy, the candidate who played the cello best happend to be a man most of the time.
