The 12 Tasks of Asterix: The Place That Sends You Mad (widescreen)

My favourite scene from my favourite film as a child, in which the defiant Gauls have to endure twelve herculean tasks in order to prove their godhood to Ceasar and the might of Rome.
After conquering athletes, magicians, nymphs and beasts, Asterix & Obelix face the deadliest challenge of all; accountancy, bureaucracy and bad customer service.

@megapulsar9244
@megapulsar9244 2 года назад
Well that's still kinda logical in a way : I mean why would they send back clients who already know about and who are asking for something specific instead of going to check it themselves? It's their job after all, they have to get filled in on everything. But yeah I so wish this kind of trick would work irl, just for simple payback for all the trouble they put us through, especially here in France (cause yeah, don't forget that the Astérix & Obélix comics, and thus this movie, is French).
@Psychohistorian42

@@megapulsar9244 it catches them off guard, because Asterix says something plausible enough that they think its real. It's mostly a tactic used by scammers and grifters, but you'll occasionally see someone use it like this to play their own game with the system.
@timothycarney9652
@timothycarney9652 2 года назад
Its because other than the guy at the front, everyone else only sees the people who were sent to them, if they don't know where to send Asterix they have to deal with him themselves, and if they have no idea about that form, then they will have to deal with it the next time it comes up. Its why asterix asked the one person who was having a good time gossiping, she had something she wanted to get back to, and was a window person who was supposed to "help" It then snowballed because they all know it will be horrible for them if they don't know what is going on, but since it was a wild goose chase it had no end point for them to reach, they just kept draging more people in.

I notice that Asterix defeats a lot of the tasks that can't be bruteforced by simply tricking the taskmasters into trying to complete their own tasks. I'm starting to realise how silly the 12 tasks are due to them being technically designed by mortals, therefore the act of testing the divinity of Asterix and Obelix is as much hubris as attempting the 12 tasks.
@KingOfElectricNinjas
@KingOfElectricNinjas Месяц назад
It's quite common for Asterix in the movie and in the books. Especially since the Gauls are basically fighting a guerrilla war where their brute force advantage is situational, and they don't always have access to the magic potion, he uses the strength and resources of his foes against themselves. It's also a fitting allusion given Hercules is often shown to be quite cunning when his strength fails, and even in using his strength in the optimal way.
@ethribin4188
@ethribin4188 28 дней назад
This is what Asterix does, and why he's the main guy, not Obelix. Asterix is very smart and cunning. He may not be a genius, but he's not the be underestimated! Asterix is smarter than most people, especially compaired to other people in the comics. Its realy only Caesar who is equal to Asterix in smarts and cunning. But he has more important things to do. Like leading Rome.

Failed my driving license exam twice after getting the witten exam then moved away to an other department in France. Tried to pass it 2 years later. They asked for my file which I had to ask to my previous driving school which never answered email or phone. Took 2 months to figure they threw away my file which they were supposed to keep 5 years. I asked what to do to a driving school I wanted to register at. They told me I needed a number which I could only get in the office department where I pass the first test, which I moved away from. But to ask for the number you need to be resident of the department and show a proof of residency... Took me a month to get make up some papers saying I live there. I send in the papers wait 2 weeks to get the number. Go back to the current driving school to register, and they tell me since I have the written exam the number is useless... Now I need to ask for the driving file the department office which takes 4-6 months to transfer. I pretty much gave up at this point.

After insisting, she gave me a ticket for the queue telling me "that I'm just gonna lose my time" and that it is "pointless". Once I was to the counter, the lady updated my information in less than 2 minutes. I told her about what the lady at the front desk told me, she went "oh nevermind, don't listen to her. She's just bitter because she doesn't like her job". Before leaving, I went back to the front desk telling politely to that lady that they actually updated my informations, just in case if she wouldn't have the information. She went "well, it shouldn't have happened anyway!" ... Gosh I hate french bureaucracy.

Asterix means Christmas to us in French-Canada. It was an almost religious thing: Christmas eve and all the way up to the New Year, "Ciné-Cadeaux" was playing on TV and while the uncles were getting drunk in the kitchen, we kids watched Asterix, Tintin, Mysterious City of Gold and all these iconic cartoons.

As a french person, I am so proud to see people loving what I thought to be known only by french speakers. This comic/cartoon is a part of my childhood and it feels great to see that it could be the case for other people all around the globe. I think it's interesting to note that the french administration was something very special and the epitome of bureaucracy when this comic/cartoon was made. It is due to the fact that France has one of the biggest states of the Western world. It is historically the first modern state and it is actually really effective in comparison with other countries. But we also tend to have a tradition of harsh criticism about it and self-derision. For instance, this sentence of Courteline "Administration is the place where people who arrive late meet those who leave early on the stairs"

I watched all the comics multiple times, since they my parents would put them in dvd players when we’d travel somewhere by car (which was often). My dad had some left from his youth too, with many of them being in French. I have to say Asterix isn’t very good in the English voice over, but it is quite good in Dutch. Also, I’m not sure about the English movies (never watched a full one), but in the Dutch ones they’d keep the French songs, if there were any.

I think my favourite part of this is while it is a great sendup of beurocracy gone up its own arse, is how it genuinely adheres to the format of a greek/roman myth. The heroes need a thing. They must go to a place that is out of the ordinary to obtain it. They find themselves stymied by the nature of this place and all their strength and power are of no use. But then they manage to turn the challenges nature on itself in order to triumph, and they leave sucessful, if only inadvertently. Not just satarizing one thing, not just two, but having those two subjects play off each other in order to make it work. Either a greek hero's task being dealing with beurocracy, or beurocracy bneing on the level of a greek hero's task. Fantastic writing.
@timothycarney9652
@timothycarney9652 2 года назад
I didn't notice that, cool. Also I like how we see all the mad townsfolk first, showing that this is an institution, something that everyone has to deal with, and not something cooked up just for the challenge, like how one of hercule's labors was cleaing out these stables that were filthy after years of neglect, it was an existing problem. It also means that the romans are also doing this sort of thing to themselves on the regular, at least in that town.

I never got the last bit of this scene as to why the administrator went ape shit. Was it because he was tricked into giving up the form and he was supposed to make it as convoluted as possible and failed?

He forced the romans to engage in their own consulates administrative structure and they were driven insane. But I think the him going wacky there at the end was because specifically trying to get form 838 drives you crazy and he already had one hence he was secretly as crazy as the structure the entire time

He always *was* mad - he's in charge of the place after all. He just didn't show it when others were around.

Listening to the Prefect in this scene is so delightful for some reason (amongst everything else great about this scene). Props to that voice actor.

During South America's military dictatorships of 1973-1980s, this is exactly how government departments were run. I experienced it as a kid, with mum and dad and later as a teenager when attempting to update my I.D. What made it worse is that a lot of people at the top got their positions from their 'friendly attitudes' towards the fascist states and not due to any form of competence or knowledge. I imagine it would have been the same throughout Asia, Africa, Italy, Spain and Germany, hence why this skit would ring so universal. Forms were usually type-written in triplicate and required stamping by different departments none in the same building or across town, none of which spoke to each other.

It is not any better after the transition to "democracy". In fact worse in many regards

This was a very memorable scene. I also saw this when I was young and this was the only scene that really stuck with me. I couldn't tell you about anything else in the movie but I remember this. I still think about it on average once a year - usually around tax time or car title transfers.

This was one of those scenes that was already funny as a kid, and became even more hilarious when you see it as an adult.

As someone who's been through the headaches of the formalities of Egyptian bureaucracy, this entire part is painfully relatable.

Any adults laughing and then realizing with horror a few moments later that you've spent a good part of your career working in such a building?
