Bland but then again, the focus should be on her character... not how abstract or eclectic her clothes look. At least not right away. But that's only my thoughts. I'm looking forward to the new series just like I've looked forward to the previous ones. I'll make up my mind when I have seen it.

rocketcon True, but Smith’s costume was the kind of dorky I could accept, a bit more stripped back, like it could work in the modern age, while this costume is way too out there (although I will accept the coat), the rainbow shirt is weird and the overall are just plain “iffy”.
I love the fact that you made a joke about Doctor Who haters. In all seriousness though, I think as time will pass there will be other costumes that the 13th Doctor will get, I didn't like the Capaldi's new look when he came, and I grew to like it with his other ones too. So I'm hoping that the same will happen with Whittaker.
To be honest this costume seems more like something that the doctor would wear when trying on different outfits like previous doctors have in classic who.

I for one an looking forward to seeing The Doctor like this. I like how the costume is an amalgamation of previous costumes. I can honestly say I have no worries about the next series. I'm going to take it for what it is and see if it sucks or not.
I agree. The first thing that hit me when I saw it? "Oh, she looks like a modern soccer mom who's trying to be with it and hip and now to her kids." I think it's the high waisted slacks that ruin the look. Why not jeans? Jeans are cool. Be the casual Doctor. That's an idea! She could wear various logo tees or something. Damn it... Another gaffe that makes me want to be on the design and style crew of DW...
It's such a shitty situation for Jodie Whitaker. She's got a lot to live up to, and she's the first woman to take the mantle of The Doctor, so she's under such intense scrutiny. I'm excited to see how she does.
Season 11 looks like a possible train wreck. the fanbase is split on there being a female doctor and with raiting already low its probably going to get much lower. From past stories, you can see that Chibnal is a sub par Doctor who writer. The doctor has 3 companions, so there a chance she wont get alot of development, or that they wont get alot of development. the costume is very odd and haas way too many callbacks, rather than being its own thing (but hopefully its because this is the first time the doctor has been a woman, so he dosent know what to wear) Will this be the end of Doctor who? we'll find out soon!
If the show starts to really suffer, I hope it doesn't go off the air, because then it will just be blamed on the Doctor being female, which will have little to nothing to do with the show being cancelled but a-holes will use that as an excuse all the same. Whittaker doesn't deserve that.
Ah, but you also should try and see it from a brighter perspective. Sure the fanbase is split, but it's not like they haven't been before in castings such as Smith and Capaldi. Ratings may be low, but most television shows these days are and those don't necessarily factor in ratings from online viewings and other sources. As well, Doctor Who on it's worse days does better than most shows on their best. Chibnall is an awful Doctor Who writer, fair point. But, he is good at being a showrunner, as evident in Broadchurch, and hopefully that talent will translate into this series. There may be little development amongst all the characters, but the timing of the episodes are extended a bit more and it's not as if Chibnall has worked with bringing out characters and making them realistic and relateable prior. The outfit is odd, but that's the glory of it in my opinion. Each doctor's outfit matches their type of doctor. For Whittaker, I assume she'll be spontaneous, able to grab attention by just walking in a room both physically and emotionally. From her outfit, I think she'll be someone who is no longer running from the shame of the time war, but is travelling around with a group of friends just to have fun and explore the every expanding universe that the doctor can't get enough of. There's no worries or stresses in how she travels, just like her outfit, as in the end, she's is running to the adventure, and no longer from her past, at least in my opinion. Will it be the end of Doctor Who? With Whitakker, probably not. My belief is that if it tanks so bad that ratings are awful, they will cast one more Doctor, and depending on how they do, will decide the ultimate fate of the show. But as you stated before, this is just conjecture, and only time will tell.

Gaucho pants, yes they are back in style. A character in the first episode of this season's Blind spot was wearing them. As the the Doctors first time as a female, it makes since she would choose something familiar but comfortable.

I personally like the costume. It is not too sexualised, while still showing that she's a woman. I can agree that there's not much "iconic" in it, but I wouldn't agree that it looks bland since it shows her propably being whimsical, adventurous and propably a way more extrovertial than 12. I also like how contrasting it is to 12's costume. His outfits were always minimalistic while this outfit is bursting with colour and is a bit uncollected. Like the doctor was panicking on what she should wear since she's never Been a woman before and just picked what she thought might look good
Joe Taylor yea exactly. David sons costume was good because it was Themed and had different contrasting colours to work with. He liked Cricket so he put something Crickety on. Had a Shirt. A jumper. A Jacket. All had a Red and white colour scheme and stood out. Tennents on the other hand was a pinstripe suit with a Trenchcoat and Converse shoes......it would have looked better if he was going for the full 1940's American Gangster Look.
I happen to like Tennent's costume and would gladly take that over this any day, I mean when you take the coat off she's a gender swapped Mork for the love of god.
I thought it was fan art when I first saw it too, but then I checked it and thought "OH SHIT ITS REAL". I'm digging it tho tbh, same with the TARDIS design. It's very different. I suppose it's always gonna be totally different with a new showrunner, cus when Moffat first took over I didn't feel as though it was Doctor Who. Over time though I got used to it and appreciated it again as my favourite TV show. Still personally liked Russel T Davies era better tho

Reminds me a bit of the costumes we got toward the end of classic Who. It was someone's idea of what a Doctor Who COSTUME would look like, instead of what someone might actually wear. I thought we'd gotten away from that in the new series (until latter-half Matt Smith), but seems like we're back to that.
I think the reason you may think the outfit is bland is her expression. Either she isn't excited to have her picture taken, or the photographer did the exact opposite thing to generate a smile and micromanaged it to the point she just wouldn't. I thought parts of this looked cobbled and nauseating because of the promo image, other photos taken of Jodie in costume with fans and even the leaked clip show it can look really good on her.
I think it's ridiculous of people to hate on the 13th Doctor. That's not because I think anyone who does so is sexist because I don't. It's because we've barely seen a hint of who she is. She hasn't said a single word and people are now saying she'll ruin the franchise. I'm sorry but it's WAY too early for that. And as for her costume, in one word: Meh.

We all knew it could and would happen it’s been speculated for years and years that the doctor could regenerate into a women and now we have a women doctor we will just have to wait and see if it goes down hill or if she is as good as David tenet and Matt Smith
I think for me its the colour palette and it feels as though the colours don't compliment one another. What I mean by this is if you look at previous Doctor's clothes they had a bit of colour consistency or colours that complimented each other very well. For example the tenth Doctor had a brown or blue suit with brown overcoat but the colours complimented one another. 11th especially in his series 7B outfit had a purple theme run throughout his clothes and 12th had a dark theme keeping mostly to dark colours, there were moments he'd have a white shirt or change his trousers but it didn't detract. With the 13th you've got lilac grey coat black shirt with stripes blue trousers brown boots yellow suspenders, what I'm basically saying is it feels as though its working against one another rather then complimenting. But hey it may look better in motion and the colours may look better it is just a photo for now.

Also, that stripe on her top is definitely not the rainbow like LGBTQ. I don't see why people are drawing that parallel. Because she's a woman? In all seriousness, I'm mixed on this outfit. It's kinda cool, but a bit too campy. I don't think it's made up from references to other doctors though, I think that's just the doctors style. Not everything is a reference.
If you have a 3d printer you should make an antweight or poundweight (aka an antweight here in the us) combat robot. I have a feeling youd have alot of fun
I was a little taken aback when I first saw it, but it's grown on me. I like the throwbacks to the Fourth Doctor with the stripey jumper/edges of the coat. The culottes are a nice choice too, they add a feminine touch without going as far as putting her in a dress or skirt, and are more practical for running in.
The outfit looks nice but I don't like the pants. It's too blue for my liking and it doesn't reach down to her feet. But if Doctor Who continued on to the 90's and if she was cast, this is what she would wear as it reminds me of the fifth, sixth, and seventh doctor's outfits it sorta looks retro to me and the lantern on the new Tardis exterior looks a bit odd to me.
Time makes fools and liars out of us all. She is not the 1st doctor to make a worse dressed list. And I'm very confident she won't be the last. Love it or hate it, every costume eventually ends up on the action figure shelf. Why fight it?
That's actually a good thing... if you can keep a neutral reaction going in it should mean you give a fair and balanced chance to Whittaker. Can't really ask more than that... definitely allot better than the people who have decided to hate it without even seeing the show... (That's not sexists per se, but it is extremely stupid.)
Personally I think there are one or two elements of her costume that are good, like sturdy boots, or the long coat, but I really REALLY hope the rest of the outfit changes at least once every few episodes. Hell, I really hope she pulls a Capaldi and after episode two the only think that's the same for the rest of the series is the coat and/or boots. I think it will look okay in modern-set episodes, maybe some stories if they're in the 80s or 90s, but it won't look good at all against a backdrop of Daleks or Cybermen, which is where it falls into the "generic modern hipster" category and not "timeless alien" instead (where it should have been all along).
Meh. It's alright. One thing that I've learned is that generally, most women don't want my opinion of what they are wearing if it's a negative one. On the flip side, they are also pretty quick to point out when they think that my clothes are stupid, so hell with it. She's not dolled up like a sex object. She's not breaking any barriers. The ensemble isn't detracting or explosive. It's really just well, safe. After leather, pinstripe, bowtie and monochromatic, this is just kind of colorful, soft, and safe. I think it's a smart move for the first female Doctor.

I don't love it, but I like it! I like it's simplicity and it looks comfortable. The only thing that is really bothering me is the fact that it doesn't have a iconic item, like tenth's coat, or 11th's bow tie, 4th's scarf, etc... I hope she gets something of her own to be memorable.

I did find myself wondering where the rest of her trousers went. I think the choice was to show off her boots, but I really don't think that's necessary. She's got some pretty nice boots, I'm sure people interested in the Doctor's footwear will notice.
I first saw the reveal on instagram. My initial reaction was "Oh hey that's neat. Look at that box!" The change in police box to a more classic look had gotten more of my attention than the outfit itself. But you make a good point, that coat will look incredibly neat during some running.
I had been hoping for something like the reveal trailer, actually. As for my opinion on the new ouftfit, I think it'll depend on her character's personality and how it looks in action. As with all Doctors, I'm trying to take a "Don't judge a book by its cover" approach, and wait until she appears onscreen and gets her first full episode to truly judge the choices they've made for this new regeneration.
Not much to say about the outfit... but the Tardis? Loving the new exterior look, very reminiscent of Tom Bakers, look forward to seeing the interior (fingers crossed for a classic interior style)
I was taken aback at first, but it's really growing on me. I think a lot of peoples problems is that they were expecting her to basically wear men's clothes, or a female version of a male Doctor's outfit. Instead Chibnall has embraced the fact that the Doctor is now a woman, and has given her an outfit only a woman would wear. Colourful, feminine, but still 100% Doctor. I approve.
Honestly, I didn't even notice most of the callbacks until you pointed them out. I am getting a bit of a Colin Baker vibe, though, and I don't think that's a good thing. It's a Colin Baker vibe in the sense that they stuck him in a costume that was so eccentric and out there that it was stupid. They took the "The Doctor wears strange clothes" too far, to the point where The Doctor apparently has no taste or ability to match clothes. And that's what I'm afraid they've done hear, "Hey, look, The Doctor doesn't know how to match clothes so she's just wearing a mismash of different things!" That all being said, after a few hours of living with it, it is growing on me a bit. I'll be interested to see its variations and how it changes in Whittaker's second season (because the outfits always change a lot in the actor's second season). P.S. I really hope they don't change the Tardis interior or the sonic again. It's far too soon for both.
I have mixed feelings. First, what I like is that it doesn't just...how do I put this....show off her womanly features. I like that as it is keeping with the character and isn't putting her sex at the forefront. It does have that sort of geek vibe to it as well. Though, it's a bit bland and I don't like how a lot of it is paying homeage to previous incarnations. It needs to be unique to her and it just doesn't look it.
To be honest I was more excited of the new tardis prop. Also, I’m iffy on the revealed costume but it’s a work in progress. The majority of the past Doctors have changes or tweaks to their overall appearance so I feel like it’ll be refined over time
I... don't know. I know the past Doctors had some odd outfits (7 being the most bizarre of course) but even still all of the Doctor's outfits in full looked like they fit together. For the recent Doctors you can see a jumper with a leather jacket, a full suit and long coat, a tweed with a bowtie, and so on. This outfit just looks so out of place with each piece, and even if ya do like the fashion its gonna be strange to see saving the world in it. I don't want to hate yet but for now im not on board and hope she has others or updates.
Too much references and not enough her own style. Each doctor has their own style, she has references to her past self which although is nice isn’t what the doctor outfits is for. Hopefully it changes after her first season and she gets something a lot better.
I think in the future parts of her outfit will change but for now i think it’s a generic outfit and i just want to see her in capaldi’s outfit when he regenerates and also how she will looks like in the first episode in 2018/2019
I’m about the same. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. I appreciate the fact that they didn’t make her overly feminine. She needs to be able to run, so putting her in high heels would of been stupid. Same with a skirt. The pants look easy enough to run in too. The coat doesn’t seem to be a nod to any particular Doctor, but something the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th have all work at some point. You’re right about the costume being kind of bland though, but it’s at the mid way point between classic Doctors, and modern Doctors where it’s still a bit “different” but it isn’t weird...
IMO it looks a little too fashionable and I would change the trousers and braces. Otherwise it’s fine. Only a costume and it’s pretty gender neutral so likely to be cosplayed by lots of people.

I don't think anyone would ware this if they weren't getting paid. I think if they went with something slightly more practical, or slightly more formal it would look better. At least increase the length of the pants to actually meat the boot tops or surpass them.

Here are my thoughts. 1) the rainbow stripe is like the 4th Doctor's scarf or the 6th Doctor's costume. 2) yes the suspenders (as we call them in America) and boots are like the 11th Doctor. 3) the coat is very like the coats for Doctors 4, 5, and 10. 4) the high up trousers remind me of the 2nd Doctor, who loved having his pants up to his chest (joke). I instantly love her outfit. But is this just her only one? Or will she be like Doctor 12 and have multiple costumes?
I was actually much in the same camp as you! Especially with the eighth Doctor comment! I missed the doctor wearing proper waistcoats and frock coats with actual trousers (take a hike 11, skinny jeans were never cool), so I was hoping that the first female doctor would have an outfit with some sort of velvet frock coat and maybe a Pertwee-esque shirt. The sensible boots are okay, but 1. The lacing bugs me and 2. I'm not a huge fan of exposed boot tops. People who are skeptical about 13 are being called sexists, but frankly the idea that they've stuck the first female doctor in something so casual and eh just strikes me as a little unintentionally sexist. Like, just give the woman some proper pants and a nice shirt with buttons on it. How about a flowing frock coat and maybe an ascot? There's lots of room for variation there!
If I remember right, Baker described his costume as "an explosion in a rainbow factory." For the record, I do think his costume did match the 6th Doctor's unstable tendencies so it was appropriate.
Victorian or Edwardian.. yeah she would love to run about saving the universe wearing tons of layers and a fecking corset. I love her coat, the trousers are not great but other than that, i dont care what she wears.
I may change my mind when I see it in action, but right now I think there are too many nods to previous Doctors. She needs to make the role her own. At this moment, it feels like who ever decided on the outfit is trying too hard to appease the wrong kind of fans.

Well I liked with peter he just kinda wore what ever he wanted while still sticking to the Basic 12th doctor getup. It shows he doesn’t wear the same thing everyday like a hoodie under a suit I hope they do the same and it’ll get better Also with Matt, later on his clothes got better but you didn’t notice till you rewatched his first season We just need to wait until she gets comfortable in the role of the doctor
I would agree that it is a bit bland, but I'm sure there will be a bunch of variants like with Capaldi. All we can do is wait. I'd like to see it in action first before I properly judge it.
