Over the last 6 months, the 14” MacBook M1 has been a treat, BUT… I’ve run into some serious pitfalls. In this review, I share my long-term experience with the MacBook 14” M1 Pro and my honest opinion on whether or not it’s still worth the investment, especially with the M2 MacBooks on the horizon. Enjoy!

if you want the battery capacity to last longer then make sure to keep battery between 20 to 80% .. avoid completely discharging it if you can.. and for goodness sake dont leave it plugged in all day everyday.. use the battery down to about 20% before charging it again... bruh

Thanks! I am experiencing the same issues with my brand new new MacBook 14", as well as a number of other glitches with the laptop such as USB stick corruption, network, Wi-Fi and I/O port issues and Final Cut pro Library files being severely corrupted and backup Library files completely disappearing! as well as other files becoming corrupted and unreadable, that don't bode well for a new device. There were also a number of OS System and FCP updates that came through just before the the FCP Library file corruption issues but I suspect it's a hardware issue, possibly involving drive corruption. After watching your video I am going to return the new MacBook as it's a good reminder of one of the main reasons I stopped doing media production. (Too much time invested in chasing broken hardware and software along with broken client for the return on investment), and forgo getting back into content production as a serous effort, as the time and money I've spent trying to update to a "New and Improved" device and software has been ten times what it should have been, and I've only just started. It seems the old trench of obsolete vs bleeding edge has not have ended, and after being left hanging by Apple on Two MacPro Desktops and two MacBook Laptops, I'm inclined to downgrade back to my 5 year old Intel-Nvidia laptop workstation as it's more reliable and gets the job done better and with less headaches without additional cost with less stress.

Just picked it up on sale. The M2 Air with 16gb of ram and a 512 GB HDD costs the same as the M1 Pro 14 inch so, to me, this was a no brainer. Also, that mini led screen upgrade is something to behold and this has the best speakers I’ve ever heard on a laptop. Very pleased with this device.

I experienced this crashing issue on my intel MBP 16" in regular dual screen setup. What I noticed was it was the power delivery on a single cable from my monitor wasn't sufficient for PD + all my USB peripherals and running the monitor. By plugging in the laptop with the stock plug+cable separately fixed this issue for me, annoying as I wanted to live that one cable life.

Its your setup, I think . Try changing your power setting to not sleep when docked and adjust your screen saver. I used to have an issue when or after waking from non apple display (49” Samsung.) as it resets some external dongles. Once I adjusted power AND got a new Apple keyboard with Touch ID, never another problem. It works PERFECTLY.

My 14” M1 Pro also spends a lot of time plugged into a dock with multiple displays and peripherals. Battery capacity is 96% of original after 7 months. Are you using the Optimized Battery Charging option in macOS Battery preferences, to preserve battery capacity by limiting the charge level on AC power? I use the utility Al Dente to manually limit the charge level to 80% on AC. Either way you can make it top off to 100% charge on demand. Also, do not frequently drain the battery to 0%; that, and high heat at 100% charge, are major contributors to reduced battery capacity. Also, you said the battery has a “maximum” number of cycles and it is 1000. But that number is not a maximum; the battery doesn’t just die at 1000 cycles. What Apple says is that the battery is designed so that at 1000 cycles, it still has at least 80% of its original capacity. If it drops below 80% during your warranty period, they might replace the battery under warranty. I have seen some reset issues when docked, but they are random and infrequent. The current uptime for my M1 Pro is 14 days. I agree that the 14” screen size is a sweet spot, and I’m happy with the overall performance and experience (cool and quiet). This is the right model for me.

Despite these negatives, it's still the best laptop I've had in my life by FAR. I got the base model. One thing people have to be aware and that I personally struggle with is that there will always be something "better". It doesn't matter if you "future-proof". In 5-10 years, your future-proofed laptop will be outranked by something cheaper. Get what you think you will need/want for your upcoming work, because you will always say "I should have" as technology gets better. Could I have upgraded than ram, storage, cores? Of course. But for what I do (music and video editing), it's amazing even at base model.

Similarly, I keep mine plugged in (with optimized battery charging), most of the day and unplug overnight, while in sleep mode. My Battery Health is 100% and only have 29 cycles (purchased in November 2021). Performance has not been an issue, at all.
@MattMerkle
@MattMerkle Год назад
99.9% of the time this is because people start loading up their laptops with more software. It's very easy to look up the battery capacity in System Info, which will show that the battery hasn't degraded (it's nearly impossible to degrade a modern laptop battery in less than a year, even if you tried). The Macs get their long battery life by staying idle as much as possible. As you have more software in the background (like Creative Cloud, Dropbox, Mail, Spotify, etc), all of that will slowly eat away at the overall battery life per charge, even if it doesn't seem like much on their own.

True, the 14" seems to be a kind of sweet spot. I originally ordered the 16", but after trying out the Air M1, the 14" and the 16" several times in the Apple store, the 16" seemed more and more oversized and over- weight. Good for stationary work when you still want to store it in a drawer or so, but just too heavy and too huge to carry it around. So I cancelled the 16" and ordered the 14" in return. It is also more reasonably priced as I took only 16GB and 1TB instead of 2TB.

For the heat rise / fan spinning, occasionally click on the battery on the finder to see what's using "significant energy". If "Core Sync" from Adobe Creative Cloud shows up, you can disable it in system pref under Extensions, uncheck it. It will stop you from using Adobe's cloud sync I've read, but it's been known to cause the issues you're describing. I just found this fix today. Hope this helps!

This is the first of your videos that I've seen. Good job. It's extra interesting following the reviews I'm seeing for the M2 MBP. My 1st ever bleeding edge computer was the M1 MBP which I got right after its release. I just couldn't stand the roaring fans on my 2015 i7 15" MBP anymore. The M1 MBP was a dream except one thing ... PORTS!!! That part was a nightmare. I tried several various dongles to plug in my three external drives and my HDMI 4k monitor. They would all randomly disconnect and even managed to corrupt my Time Machine drive so badly that I couldn't repair it. I got the binned 14" MBP Pro as soon as I could and I haven't looked back. The only upgrade was the 1TB SSD. It has functioned flawlessly. I've managed to make the fans run a little bit while editing photos but I couldn't hear them. I have not yet done any video work on it yet since my need for that has mostly gone away. Seeing the reviews of the M2 MBP, I'm ultra-glad I didn't wait for that. But I got the M1 MBA for my wife when I got the 14" for myself and now I kind of wish I'd waited on that in order to get her the M2 MBA with magsafe. But otherwise, the M1 MBA exceeds all her needs by a huge margin. So far, the 14" MBP is also exceeding my needs.

And when I do venture out I usually carry a power bank and I can usually can end the day with 100% charge everyday. So the battery is almost never taxed. I am planning to keep this around for 3-5 years and even if I need to change the battery once or twice would not be a big deal.

16'' M1 max 64 gigs 2tb ssd reporting in. Zero regrets and working 100% fine zero crashes or any severe issues about 1 year in. I also didnt have the patience and was extremely tempted to get the base 16in off the shelf but I'm very very very happy I held back and waited weeks for the m1 max instead. Absolutely solid machine as my daily driver

I was just thinking the same set ups - then I saw you said access the mini remotely - can you elaborate on that? - at this point I will wait and see about the new MB air announcement due shortly i believe, I was thinking of getting one of those with increase ram and just a m1 mini with 16GB as my home option - i just recently saw these MBook being used in the docked or closed config at home, I had no idea that was an option to do, yeah I am not with it when it comes to all the these things but started examining videos that do that and saw this one, i use a 2018 iPadPro for the majority of doing stuff and have an old 2014 Mac mini for my music and graphics - Juky I will be ready to go full upgrade and I liked hearing your option…thanks

Gold Standard 💖 This was a great great review! I've started looking into long term reviews of the M1 pro & max chip and I'm happy that you mentioned the max chip with 3D renders. As someone in the 3D field, I was very worried about how long the pro chip would handle files Vs the max which seems to geared more to 3D creatives and power users. I'm still saving up and researching my options. I wanted to ask, would you recommend the max chip to someone who doesn't use the clamshell mode and just uses it for working away from home but still does 3D work?

paused video after the negatives to answer a couple of specifics. I have the same model as you, for about the same time. I also use the Caldigit TS3+ dock (that's what yours looked like). I used it docked a lot with a Dell 4K monitor for a while, now the Studio Display. it's docked a *lot*. Battery health FWIW now 100%, 47 cycles, "normal", design capacity 6075 mAh, current: 6008 mAh. FWIW. I hadn't *noticed* a fall-off in battery life, but it may be I don't take it out enough... I also don't make any special efforts with battery management. With the Dell monitor (always via displayport) I have sometimes had it failing to properly wake or sleep the display, but I don't *think* I ever had the computer actually crash. Of course, a failing-to-wake monitor could *look* like a crash but I'm sure you're beyond that kind of confusion 😉 All has been perfect since getting the studio display, on or off the Caldigit dock. I did have an issue with the Caldigit dock's ethernet port though, not showing, not working properly, etc. It turned out to be a known problem, probably since macOS 12.4 I'm guessing? (for a few months either side of 12.4 coming out I was on wifi-only anyway so didn't see it when it started.) It tries to put the ethernet port into power saving mode and the dock doesn't support it. You need to turn off that "energy efficient ethernet" setting. Caldigit has a video about this issue here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bR-thVDtt3s.html and since doing that, it's been solid again. (and in general they've been great for support, especially given mine is about 4 years old now and still gets firmware updates...)

FWIW, the only "clamshell mode" issues I've had with mine is slowness to wake up from external Apple BT keyboard-sometimes I have to open the lid to get it to wake and reset the video output. It also seems to really hate switching between external displays of varying resolutions-artifacts in Photoshop (I blame Adobe), and general app slowdowns requiring app relaunch or sometimes Mac restart. Everything else - smooth sailing after 15 months.

Al Dente is a great battery app to keep your MacBook topped off at 70-80%. I’ve had my 14” MBP for 5-6 months and my battery health is still at 99% and maintains a steady charge and keep it plugged in most of the time. Hope this helps some people.

Mac OS already does that. You don’t need to buy any additional software. I have left mine largely plugged in working from home since launch and have 100% health. Mac OS regularly refuses to charge it past 80 and has a notification stating the reason is I almost never use it on battery.

Hi Andrew , you said you left your MacBook docked all day long ? meaning you have less than 10 battery cycles ? I would love to know to know exactly how many cycles you have ( Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu , then choose System Information. Under the Hardware section of the System Information window, select Power. The current cycle count is listed under the Battery Information section.) Cos I did just bought an M2 max 16 inch and like you most of the time it will be used as a desktop , but I thought of taking care of my battery cos the Mac will never use it unless there is a power outage, by discharging and charging it every 2 weeks . and can you tell us how is your battery health reported by the Mac ? which % ? cos it seems weird that after 6 month already you battery drain in fast, I know that on mine even brand new that with all the programs running in the background ( little programs and well known one ) I've noticed that the MacBook worked for only 8 hours instead of 22.. but then I logged in my second admin account which had nothing in it ( useful in case of an issue ) and here without all these background apps I was able to play Apple TV and even RU-vid Content back to back for 20h30 . so maybe you have a ton of background process and your battery health is good. I would love you to answer to that . And btw for your issue about unexpected restarts or shutdowns , please disconnect any accessories, turn off any bluetooth trackpad , mouse and trackpad and run Apple Diagnostics mode, turn off the Mac and only leave magsafe plugged in , cos otherwise you'll have an error code cos the tool will report that there may be an issue with power adapter . then keep pressing Touch ID button until you see the recovery partition , then Press Command D and wait until the Mac restart in drag mode. this will analyse all parts of the Mac and if something is wrong it will tell you which part it is , then contact Apple for a repair . ( my guess is that maybe you may use too much docks and some of the cheaper ones can screw up the Mac but not for ever.

I dealt with the reset issues BIG TIME and what stopped it was getting dual studio displays. I had it connected to a 50" Samsung TV and it was a horrible experience. After switching to the studio displays, all of that went away and going from sleep to awake is instant. I know everyone isn't into the studio displays, and they're pretty pricey, but if you can do it, for the time alone it was worth it to me. It's trash that Apple seemingly purposely makes their products to not work with other brands. Just a bit of info in case you decided to ditch the monitor you have.
