If you want to delete instead of backspace, hold the fn key down and press delete, it then acts exactly like the windows delete key. Two key presses required yes, but it eventually becomes muscle momory.

You can do Option + left or right to jump by words. You can also use Option + delete to delete by words. Also command + delete will delete by lane. And command + left or right to jump to either end and command + up or down does the same. We can push this further with Shift if you want to select and jump by words or lanes or go all the way up or down.

Funny story, I almost exclusively use backspace and delete mapped to my mouse buttons for video editing. Once, I borrowed my friend's macbook for a project, and found it impossible to map delete to my mouse (it was a logitech). Using a modifier to access the delete function is not the same as actually inputing delete, at least to the configuration software which only registered the modifier or backspace by itself. Ended up having to connect a USB keyboard just so I could press the delete key which I found hilarious.

I think he knows these key combinations. On windows it's just one button. Muscle memory makes it difficult to add that one more step to use the delete button like on how it is on windows. For me it's exactly the opposite. inadvertently always make a mistake on my windows gaming PC if I'm too lazy to open the MacBook Pro I have for simple emails in-between sessions of gaming.

First time on the channel. I think the video is great. Videos about day to day experience are much more understandable for normal users than watching benchmarks. Some things i've read in the comments and what i learned myself. The "delete" function can be used with the function and backspace keys (read that in the comments and tried it out, it worked) or by pressing the control and "D" keys simultaneously. For the screenshots you could try using command+shift+5 instead of command+shift+4 (which i assume you use). You can just copy the screenshot (with command+c) then and paste it to where you want it to be. Also command+shift+3 would be a screenshot of the whole screen.

Pressing and holding control when doing any of the screenshot commands (e.g. cmd + shift + 3 for fullscreen screenshot or cmd + shift + 4 for selective screenshot) saves the screenshot to clipboard instead of saving to desktop 2. You can get clipboard manager apps like Maccy 3. My personal favourite mac hack is Rectangle which is absolutely free and lets you snap windows like you can on Windows ! Apple silicon is one of the biggest changes in computers in as long as I can remember and I worked in computer sales for 4-5byears and kept up with every new release. I've been on Windows since I was 4 years old and have used Macs before but never thrilled with them. I got a refurb M1 Pro 14" as a compliment to my 5900X desktop with 2080 GPU. I now barely ever touch the desktop at all unless it's for gaming as the M1 Pro laptop is as quick as the 5900X system in all but the most intensive tasks. All in a tiny body with amazing display that I can use anywhere for 6+ hours. Completely bananas

Thanks for the helpful comparison. Although I made the switch to Mac many decades ago, as a non-power user I've never missed Windows because I have continued to use some of my irreplaceable Win apps with Parallels Desktop. Even on M1 Macs, Parallels runs seamlessly and very fast, with virtually no practical loss of speed compared to native Mac apps. One other not-so-minor consideration in choosing Mac over Windows as a non-power user: Mac support is great because Apple takes responsibility for both the system and the hardware. Moreover, my experience has repeatedly been that phone support continues long after formal coverage has run out. FWIW, I have a background in electronics and can troubleshoot and fix about 95 percent of the problems I encounter with our Macs - M1 desktops and laptops, iPhones and iPads - but when I can't, it takes only a couple of minutes on an initial call to Apple support to reach a senior tech, and they invariably can fix the problem. Compare that to the typical experience with Windows machines that have problems.

The same bar shows on both screens so if you have a Safari window with RU-vid on your left screen and another Safari window with other stuff on the right monitor, it takes a surprising amount of mental energy to get back to the windows from the dock. You right/long press on the Safari icon and then have to look at the text to remember which window is on the monitor you are looking at. if you want to screenshot to the clipboard instead of to a file use the option key when taking the screen shot such shift-option-command-3 or shift-option-command-4. That will cause it to go to the clipboard but not save it as a file. I think there supposed to be a way that you can reverse how that works but I don't recall how to do that at this time. Personally, I like having it save it as a file, that way if I screw up and lose the clip in the clipboard, I can just reopen the screenshot. Once I am done, I can delete. To me, its not that big of a deal but that's just my preference. I just thought you should know that there is a way to screenshot to the clipboard without saving to the desktop. Also to copy a files path from finder, you have a couple of options: Option 1: right-click or option click the file that you want to copy so the menu comes up on the screen. If you press and old the option key down while the menu is open, you will see the copy change to copy "filename" as a path where filename is the name of your file. Option 2: If you have the file path showing on the bottom of the finder window, place the mouse over the filename at the end of the path and the right-click or option-click the name and it will have the option to copy as a path.

I’m surprised people don’t talk about Command-Tab, the equivalent of Alt-Tab on Windows. It’s the primary way I multitask, and you can quit things with Command-Q just by pressing that while it’s up. And it makes it trivial to see what is open.

To use windows style delete key, press function + delete on Mac, does the same thing as delete in windows. Mac OS also have an alternative way to view different windows of a same app: deep press on the app icon shows you all the windows that are opened for that app, and in the settings there is an option for 4 finger swap down to view all the windows opened for the current app in focus. As for windows snapping, bettersnap app solves most of my problem with Mac OS windows management, and spotlight is so fast that it is often faster to open apps with it than going to the dock or alt+tab in Windows. Closing apps with a mouse might be faster on windows due to the placement of the close button, but Mac have superior keyboard shortcut to close an app: command+w/q is so much ergonomic, intuitive and easy to press than alt+f4 on windows.

Some of this has probably been covered by other commenters, but I figured I'd let you know a few tips that I thought of during the video. I've been a Mac user since 1990, and have worked (as a programmer) on nothing but Mac laptops since 1998, but my 16" MBP M1 is my favorite Mac ever. - You can move the cursor by word by pressing Opt-Left Arrow and Opt-Right Arrow. When not in Vim, I use this all the time. Cmd arrows will move you to the beginning and end of the line. - I don't really paste paths, so I don't know of an easy way to get a path (but a utility I'll mention soon can probably help with that). One way you can get a path into the clipboard is to drag it onto Terminal, which will put the path on the command line. To _go_ to that path in the finder, you can press Shift-Cmd-G, which brings up the Go to Folder dialog. - Saving screen shots is an option. Press Shift-Cmd-5 and the screen shot interface will come up. At the bottom of the screen is an "Options" menu that you can use to select where the screenshot is saved. You can choose Clipboard, bug if you're usually messaging it to someone, you can also choose Messages. As far as things not natively supported, I highly recommend Keyboard Maestro. I use it for dozens of macros to control the UI, but of interest to you are macros I use to snap windows to the right, left, top right quarter, top left quarter, etc. You could also probably use it to capture the path of the currently open Finder window. While it's probably the most valuable utility I know of on the Mac, here are a few others you might like: - SwitchResX: Allows me to increase the resolution to 2992x1870 (better than my previous favorite, the 2012 17" MBP). I need my glasses to be able to use it but if your sight is better than mine, it can go up to 3456x2180. - DefaultFolderX: gives many more options in the open and save dialog. - iStat Menu: Gives a menu of various status of the laptop, including CPU and memory usage. - Alfred: Sort of a supercharged Spotlight with more options. - Carbon Copy Cloner: Plug in a drive at least as big as the internal drive and you have an exact clone that you could use to boot another computer should something happen to yours.

@linkfang9300
@linkfang9300 3 месяца назад
I agree on quite a lot of things you mentioned in the video! And overall I also think Windows handles multi-task better than MacOS. One more thing on the multi-task stuff that Windows does better. I can see all my running applications/instances when swipe up using 3 fingers, but on Mac, I can only see the ones that are not minimized and it's super annoying as I have to first check here and if I can not find the one I want , I have to un-minimize a few to see if it was hidden there, what worse is that if you un-minimize the app/instance, you can not click the icon in dock bar again to minimize it, you have to move your mouse to top left of the app/instance to minimize them again... For an easy photo editing, I can use Photos app on Windows, but the one on Mac seems to be just a viewer. And PowerToys is amazing to use! So, I wish Intel and AMD can do better this year, and also hope Qualcomm's new chip could be as good as they stated. I do like the performance and energy efficiency on Mac, but still prefer Windows, not to mention there are quite some interesting designs from Windows OEMs, like the Asus ZenBook Duo 2024, a real duo screen laptop but sill offer the traditional laptop experience.
