The 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks Location

In July of 1916, New Jersey became the site of a series of vicious shark attacks that would span 12 days and take the lives of four people and severely injuring one.
With previous deadly attacks in Beach Haven and Spring Lake, New Jersey, the shark made its way north and down a freshwater creek in Matawan, New Jersey on July 12, where it would attack and kill 12-year-old Lester Stillwell and 24-year-old Stanley Fisher within an hour of each other. Matawan hadn’t prepared itself for attacks like other shoreline towns in New Jersey, as they were so far inland along a freshwater creek.
The suspected man-eater would be caught two days later in the nearby Raritan Bay. To be sure it was the killer, the over 300-pound monster was dissected, and 15 pounds of human remains were found in its stomach.
It has been determined that the shark was a bull shark, the only shark that can survive in both fresh and saltwater. However, new research has shown that a great white could have survived depending on the length of time it spent in brackish waters. The incident was a heavy inspiration for Peter Benchley, who would write his 1974 novel Jaws.

It's Matawan creek, not a river. The old dock is called Wycoff. Fisher wasn't trying to save him. It had been over an hour. He was trying to recover the body for the family.

I appreciate history for the good of it, or for the gruesome. I was thinking it was a Bull. No doubt that it could of been a White. Pick your Jaws. Either way you’re getting chomped. Well done video.

It was during a full moon and the tides were unusually high, thus the salinity was higher than usual, facilitating white sharks' ability to get that far up the creek.

The creek you're showing was much more navigable in 1916. Those docks were for boats, and their was industry in Matawan creek.

Wow, you make a great point. Never thought of that. 100 years total makes a difference too especially if you’re not using it like it used to be used. Thanks for the comment! And thanks for watching!! 🙌🏼🦈🙌🏼

This is the way it looks based on plain facts. After the attack on Charles Vansant, the Great White developed a taste for human flesh (which happens with lots of predators, both land and water). This shark moved inland with the tide into brackish water and caused the other attacks upstream and then moved back downstream to the open sea. This tallies with the geographical sequence of the attacks. It was then captured in the bay.
@justinp5661

You are correct. Most experts including the leading expert believe it was the Raritan white
@joshuagann8026
@joshuagann8026 5 месяцев назад
They say the way the tide was at that particular time there would have been plenty of salinity for a juvenile white to travel Matawan creek. Who knows though coulda been a bull in the creek and white in two ocean victims, or the same shark for all, or 2-3 different sharks.

Love the SUP + history vlog! Very interesting video; I hope you do more SUP vlogs like this. I was planning on doing something like this at Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, where the Harriet Tubman Museum and Underground Railroad are. Didn’t realize the shark attacks took place in NJ. Thanks again for the cool video!

Lester Stillwell's body was spotted floating in the water on Friday morning by a train conductor just on the other side of the shark mural!!!!!

Lester Stillwell is my great uncle. From what I was told, they had to fashion a stretcher out of wood to carry Lester to the train station to take him to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. They got him there and he died in the operating theater (operating room)
