In 2005 Germany was exposed to its own match-fixing scandal. A cup upset between a Bundesliga team and a lower-ranked side revealed a sport-gambling syndicate, and sentenced a professional referee to time in prison.
All on the eve of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The scandal has still effect on the German fan culture. When you are not happy with the referees decisions, the whole stadium shouts "Hoyzer, Hoyzer, Hoyzer...".

First I’d ever heard about this. Mad that this was going on around the same time as Calciopoli, goes to show we’re hardly “holier than thou” in European football. Great video, very informative 👍

but the thing is he got caught, imagine how much he would have made if he had just worked 3 years. The betting would have been increased by 10 fold by then and his cut would have been massive. Imagine if he was active during world cup. He would have been shitting gold to this day.

3:35 One of those he tried to recrute Is Felix Zwayer. There are still alligations against him, but the DFB protects him. Zwayer now is an international FIFA referee.

And there are still shady people in the DFB. They kicked out the wrong person with Fritz Keller. The poison that kills the DFB are still in. Namely Rainer Koch and Peter Peters.

Zwayer actually even got a ban for it, it just didn't seem to matter in the long term because he's had a lot of allies along his career. It's insane how he ever made it to the Bundesliga in the first place, but the fact he's done international Tournaments and the Champions League as a matchfixer says everything about modern football that you need to know.

@@michiadams He didn't get banned. They lessened his punishment (a six month ban) due to his cooperation with the DFB.

I still remember when the investigation was taking place. This was the first time I saw a scandal at this level of football in my life. I was following up live updates on Goal website like a madman. This brings back nostalgia. Another top video from a top channel ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

The sentences handed out seem a bit odd to me... so the guys who organised the whole thing and did the bribing got at most 35 months, but Hoyzer got over 2 years, even after helping the police?

Maybe they spend good money to buy good lawyers or admitted some information to get the reduced time. Hoyzer would probably get 10+ years if he didn't cooperate. But I do agree, I also think they got light jail time compared to Hoyzer.

35 months = 2 years 11 months, so they got a slightly longer sentence than Hoyzer. They were crooks but so was Hoyzer but he also broke his vow to uphold the game so he does deserve a longer sentence and if he hadn't cooperated it would have been much longer. You cant get rid of all crooks but without inside help they cant influence games

In Brazil, something "simillar" happened, and it was in 2005 too on the Campeonato Brasileiro, aka Brasileirão. It is a BIG case that you could do a video of.

Reminds me of a scandal that happened in Brazil, also in 2005, aka "The whistle scandal", in which games had to be replayed. There was a great coverage of the media, and in the end, some refs admitted receiving money to influence games. It would be a great idea for a video imo

Doubtful that it would ever reach the top levels of the sport. No player would ever participate because they are already exceptionally wealthy and the referees know they wouldn't get away with it because of the level of scrutiny.

That game was/is to big to be investigated. Imagine an Uefa referee in a champions league semifinal being investigated for match fixing.Ovrebo got paid hugely , and he will never face any consequence for it.

A very similar scandal happened in Brazil in 2005, the difference here is that not only a referee was involved, but Cotinthians, who was national champion that year. Other difference is that in Brazil nobody was punished and the club involved on corruption was given the championship anyway. Brazil is the paradise for corruption practices
