As long as betting exists this problem will never be solved.
@MM-bx1ei
@MM-bx1ei 4 года назад
Problem is not betting, problem is lower ranked players are not getting money because tournaments are stealing away money from the totality of the players in the first place. Slams share %15 of their revenue and they earn €1,1 billion in a year. And it's like %19 for ATP tournaments which earn €563 million annually. Obviously it's more of an issue with slams as they earn more but give less percentage but those are pathetic, disastrous revenue sharing percenateges nonetheless. This is why Pospisil's vision consists of increasing revenue via negotiation and funding ITF circuit players who lose money on the tour and have to revert to match fixing to literally continue their career. If players are able to at least double their revenue sharing percentages, then significant step would be taken to solve the problem of match fixing.

@zee_12
@zee_12 4 года назад
@@MM-bx1ei don't disagree at all, this should be happening but I can guarantee you if there's any money on the table somewhere it'll be taken. My take on it is as it currently is, you already know prehand what is the projected prize money and expense for the Futures tournaments, many players including myself knew where this is going and that you need to invest not make profit in this phase. I quit early but I also happen to grow up with the two brothers mentioned here and am telling you it's not always about having enough money to survive on the circuit, the temptation of making an extra dollar will never go away. Again am not in anyway against increasing the prize money and have a proper ratio between expenses and returns but don't expect betting to slow down one bit. The concept of betting itself is flawed and at it's core destroys any fair competition.
@memememe843
@memememe843 4 года назад
@maccajoe agree. No one has successfully made corruption go away, and higher pay at the lower levels would be good for a bunch of reasons, but that won’t stop some players who know they will never break the top 50 from cashing in. It just needs to be policed as well as possible. I do think higher pay for those starting out or competitive but lower ranked would be great for the sport, but I am not sure the tournaments are necessarily holding back. Putting on those tournaments seem expensive as heck. The venue, the people, the marketing, the food, and much more. A lot of expenses there.

15K ITF Tournament, prize money 15 000 dollars. Tournament winner earns 1/6 of the prize money or cca 2500 dollars, minus taxes that's 1500 netto. He must win 5 matches to earn 1500 dollars. Imagine you are number 345 and play against number 758. Odds before match are 1,15-- 4,50. If you win first set 6:2 , odds will be 1,02-- 12,0. You (your brother, trainer) just needs to bet 200$ on your oponnent, you lose on purpose and you won 2200$ netto (2400-200), that's more than tournament winner

I am both a gambler and a tennis fan. The most unfortunate part of match fixing in tennis is that, if done correctly, it is completely undetectable. The examples covered in this video were sloppily organized by wannabe low-level mob guys who didn't cover their tracks. A sophisticated operation bets on the other guy as well. Not only does that lower any red flags, but it even helps the fixers as they will get better odds on their guy. The inherent greed of stupid criminals is the only reason we know about these instances. There are countless others we do not know about and will continue to not know about.

One other thing -- I hope people don't watch this and immediately start thinking that any comeback in tennis is a sign of match fixing on the part of the losing player. Sports are sports, humans are humans. Blowouts happen and comebacks happen. A true fixed match usually does not include any type of drama or comeback. You get in, do the job, get out and get paid.

Wrote a research paper on performance enhancing drugs in tennis in college in 2012, definitely very interesting as well. It must be rampant, as with match fixing, just so many players, only so many players able to be drug tested/ able to be caught for fixing, masking agents for performance enhancers exist... Not just steroids, there's "blood doping" / other kinds of strength and endurance enhancers. Could go on about it, only so many have been caught/ called out on it, and of course the ATP looked the other way / dropped all charges when the legendary 90's-early 00's player tested positive for a banned substance because he denied it (one that probably does more harm than good, and maybe in grand scheme of things we should admit most of them must be on something/ even established players having multiple coaches/ endorsements/ nutritionists, etc. are unfair advantages against up and comers... But what can you do. Still funny to think for how "clean" the sport is perceived as over the years, the deeper you dig, is very not... Still yes, it is an entertainment product for money, above all, whether it has as much integrity as they want/ need it to appear as or not

This is absolutely 100% going on in every area of tennis especially the ATP. I watch a lot of tennis matches and it almost always goes to a 3rd set. it's not as simple as lose win betting. There are so many live bets that can be done and it is all absolutely rigged to a certain extent. Players always ironically lay back in the 2nd set and lose after they just won the first set 6-1. Doesn't make sense at all. Theres no stopping it either. Disappointing and it's pretty much stealing

I agree it happens a lot but equally winning a set 6-1 and then losing the next set 6-1 is very easily done when the margins are so small in tennis. Just because a player is dominating the first set it doesn't necessarily mean they will dominate the whole match. It's no different to football when the momentum swings in the second half and fixing a football match at the highest level is almost impossible

As a professional tennis coach, I can say many shady things happen in our sport. Silent bans for PED’s, match fixing, etc. I know a few players who have been banned, but have never been up close and personal with anything like it. Most of the guys who do it are struggling monetarily and are trying to make a living. The need to raise the prize money at the lower levels is very much needed.

He tried out for the NBA in the off season didn't make it and came back for a second stint with the Kings the next season here. The first few games were played then out of no where a bunch of federal police flew over from America and arrested him and took him back to the states where he was convicted for "point shaving" along with his other 4 starting team mates from his college team from 5 years previous. But to counter and and to go into what you said, this is why education is important. And I don't just mean academics. Like education about how the professional circuit works and at the same time, have an education that you can fall back on. No one can truly predict, even talented juniors, how well their professional career will turn out. The media also tends to portray and make well known top players in the top 50 for singles generally, and so forth which in turn can attract sponsors and such. But that's not necessarily something you just want to bank on, if you're officially on tour. Last i heard, unless you're in the top 70, you're barely breaking even. So I believe it is very important that before one turns professional, they should truly take time to think about possible expenses and things they may have to do to supplement. Because the system and what they pay may not change for a long while. Having something to fall back on will help a lot. Correction, having something that you can fall back on and also enjoy.

In general it is easy to fool tests as long as you train in a country that won't test you. Let's say you take PED once per year during off season and travel to Nepal or something (excuse can be to get better training due to altitude). During that time you do a lot of physical exercises. When you return the PED is undetected but you have got incredible and permanent physical results

This is crazy never knew about it. It's unfortunate how capitalistic the tennis system is set up - top players get richer, lower ranked players lose money and have no choice but to match fix to keep their career alive. A system where lower ranked players could be paid a liveable wage or at least expenses covered while on tour would be ideal, albeit hard to expect something like this to ever happen
@JakeLesser

Thanks for the video. This is an interesting topic. I believe match fixing only really concerns the lowest levels of pro tennis. Frankly it is bizarre that you can even bet on matches that far down the tennis ladder when the majority of matches are not even televised.
@Boollish

The shadiest stuff probably isn't in fixed matches at the highest level, but on fixed bets. You can make prop bets on things like "who wins first game", "double faults", "match points saved" etc... What's to stop a Top 25 player from tanking just a few serves if he gets paid off on the money line against a low level futures player? What we really need is high level statistical analysis on bets and individual games. My money (har har har) is on coaches and players all being in on fixing these small little bets to the tune of millions. All a coach would need to do is send a small signal during the match because the player would get a cut to go over 18 total match games. Or the players have a handshake agreement that if that match is 6-0 4-0 but the money is on a 3 set match, the winning player will take a dive but be guaranteed a third set win in return for the two players splitting the money.
@JakeLesser
@JakeLesser 4 года назад
@@Boollish That is a great point about prop bets. I didn't consider that aspect. I would say that the highest level players who are making serious money through prize money and endorsements, the risk would be too great. But lower down, the only thing that really incriminates the players is a paper trail and suspicious betting patterns.

If they want to stop this they need to promote more smaller tournaments so prize pools are larger. ATP and the Grandslams should donate a portion of profits to smaller tournaments. THis would allow winners of those tournaments to improve.

Dude there was a match that was 6-0 6-0 and the player that lost was nowhere near being a pro, you should check out that cuz not only it did rise suspicious but the ones that participe in the match were saying they would do it again.

The thing is with Betfair, in order for your bet to count, it has to be "matched". Whatever odds you try to bet on to win, someone else has to agree to stake their money at those agreed odds. Betfair then just takes commission for the winnings. So the sad thing is, real people who actually "knew" tennis and thought they were getting a decent shot at good odds got screwed, and a bookmaker didn't. BetFair did a great job by voiding the bets nd looking into the fix, as they themselves stood to profit from it either way.

Indeed, there were a lot of threats on the ATP Directors in the main case you mentioned. (www.buzzfeednews.com/article/heidiblake/the-tennis-racket) I think the match fixing matter even affects Grand Slams.. Yana Sizikova's doubles match in Roland Garros 2020 for instance. Your three recommendations are completely right. Education should start as soon as you play ITF events. Kids should learn that these fixers will use you forever and that you'll get caught eventually...

IIRC, shortly before (or maybe it was after) the cheating scandal, Davydenko won a whole tournament using a single racquet. I don't think it was a big tournament, and I don't remember who he beat along the way, though I remember being really impressed. More than that though, it instilled in me the fact that other pros going through multiple racquets in a single match was completely unnecessary (smashing racquets aside). In hindsight, maybe it was a sign he may have had money problems.

Match fixing has gone to a level of unthinkable levels in Tennis. Top players are seemingly into it. I think people who watch B. Paire matches can easily find out that he is fixer. What was the last time a player lost 2 sets and a break Up and still lost a Grand Slam final. And Zverev did that. It must be either Thiem lost the first set purposefully or Zverev lost purposefully. The Khachanov vs Garin match in French Open was one of the purposeful losing case. Garin was clearly the better player on the court still he was decided to lose. Tennis is no more a Gentleman's sport. It is clearly becoming a cheaters sport.

If there's heavy betting on something, then fixing will be rife. All professional sport is indelibly tainted. So enjoy watching pro sports for the amazing athletic feats, but don't get too excited about the results. Sadly, you can never be confident the result wasn't predetermined.
