Still using this camera over my iPhone 15 pro, for almost 9 years now! Slapped on a tiny Samyang 12mm lens on it and it goes on every hiking trip with me. Also added a MagSafe magnet to the back so i could mount my iPhone on there pretty easily
There’s a usb version of this camera (which I was lucky to buy) called the umc-r10c which is normally used for drone imaging but makes for an awesome webcam!
I bought a QX1 recently, as i liked the Idea back in 2014 when it launched, but was never able to buy one back then. And i do like the QX1! Yes, it's not for quick photos, but for everything else it's really handy, since the objectives are as big, or most bigger than the camer itself :D And if Sony would make a new version of the QX1, i would buy that, but not let go of my old one. The idea of the Camera Style lens was really good in my opinion, but it might have been to early for those
Woah! I can’t believe you managed to get your hands on one! I hope Sony can revisit the idea of QX-1, it really was ahead of its time. Thanks for dropping by!
It's possible to go full manual mode if you buy a manual focus lens and put the camera into "S" mode. That makes it great for taking photos of moving traffic at night or even the night sky. Also you do not need to have your phone or tablet mounted on the cameras back... The smart device can be used as a remote.. This way you can walk away from it and take selfies of yourself or a group picture... Or remove shakes from long time shutter photos ✌
i just purchased the QX-1 2nd hand and I can wait to get my hands on it, hopefully it's still worth it in 2022. thanks for an amazing review. hope you create more content with the QX-1 to show its capabilities. thanks!
This and the DxO One are cameras that deserved to have more iterations, despite their apparent lack of market viability. It's a shame that creative and inventive products get relegated to the dumpster because they don't sell well. Every once in awhile we need companies to stick to their guns and let the engineers run wild instead of the same old camera formats we've had for years.
I agree. I'm kinda sick of cameras looking the same, except for things like the Insta360 Go 2 or the DJI Pocket 2, and I'm just waiting for someone to come up with a vlogging camera that truly blows my mind.
Been lovin using it many years ago, sadly id lost the whole camera set for like 5 years. Fortunately i found it back misplaced in my house yesterday. Can u imagine how it feels to get it back runnin😂💪🤪
Still have my QX-1 since the release. It also can sync with AZ1VR live view remote when you don't have a phone. I wish it has Apple watch support where you can directly hook up to this camera.
I still got mine and still use it. I recently found out that you can still take photos while NOT connected to the phone it makes it a fun go to party camera for me since it gets past around and you dont know what you got until you look at the sd-card. I looking for new lenses tho, that's how i stumbled a pun your video, haha. Couldn't remember that it's this old lol but i still love it.
Sometimes amidst all the specs upgrades and all, we forgot what cameras are supposed to do - make it fun to take photos. I absolutely love this camera to bits.
I have this camera since it was released. Nowadays I use my a6400 for dedicated fotography tours, but still use the qx1 one for traveling especially bikepacking cause it fits perfectly in a food pouch 😂 and the sigma 18-50 f 2.8 is a Perfect addition
I'm a proud owner of six QX1s. This unsung hero of the Sony camera ecosystem was so underrated, but I still use it for going to photo shows and other expos, as well as carrying my primary camera as an addition. It's ten years on, and I'm still turning heads. This camera had a multi-camera link system that connected up to 5 devices with a live-view remote, which gave me a multi-cam setup for interviews. I'm a videographer first and a photographer second, but either way, once again, this is truly one of the unsung heroes in the Sony ecosystem. Its small shape makes it easy to carry and get into places where they don't allow bigger cameras. It's small and powerful. I wish there were an update to control more of the video function of the Sony imaging app. I even went to a Sony event and met a few people that worked on the QX1 project, and we're amazed about the modifications that I was able to create for this already fantastic product. If there were an update to this product, I would jump right on it. The possibilities for this 10-year-old camera are endless. I would love to see what Sony can come up with now.
Yeap! I still use mine for street photography. I control it with a live view remote that came with my AZ1 action cam and sincronice them at the same time. Really nice camera
I just started using my QX1 after retiring my QX100.. I got them both when they launched and all my videos have been recorded on the QX100.. I hope Sony revisit the QX and RX range. (Just bought a RX0ii 🥰)
As a Sony cams user, I have purchased one on Ebay. Can't wait to test it 🙂 Knowing the pros and cons of it. But I have a bunch of creative manual lenses I would like to test with this "bad boy": Lensbaby lens, Sirui Anamophic lens, vintage lenses... Greetings from Brussels (Belgium) 🙂
I guess given how slow the focusing is on the QX-1, manual lenses don't sounds like a bad idea since you'll be taking time with your shots anyway. Let me know how that goes, maybe I'll pick up some too! Thanks for dropping a comment!
I have the QX1, I own many prime e mount lens, I sold off the NEX7, many years ago, brought a RX10III, but the size is a full kit size, the QX1 and my prime lens collection covers any thing I want to shoot, I shoot in Raw/Jpeg so I may correct in post. Many software programs are available to enhance w/o needing full photoshop skill level med/high. The size makes it the one to grab when I want to bring something, not knowing what to expect. I have the Zeiss zoom , and the PZ internal zooming lens, all the prime APS-C. I can hang the QX1 with the 35mm 1.8 w/OSS, around my neck and no one knows what it is with my phone around my wrist like a watch for full control, or leave it on a table top tripod, not behind it, I am in range to shoot covert unposed images, a more natural look. It’s Iike the old weegee style, gritty, full of stories, random crop, uncomposed, hard, unique. Run and gun.
@@ArissaHa yeah I have contacted a developer to do just that but apparently it’s illegal to do. 🫣 In the mean time I created a nice setup that transforms the device in a mobile centered camera. I would upload a render but RU-vid doesn’t support that unfortunately.
I had a look at these when they were new. The big problem with these is that they aren't really more portable than carrying a "full" APSC camera. They are less wide, but have much more depth/height and more length than an a6xxx series camera. With the smartphone clamp, it gets even chunkier. This is a problem because what keeps mirrorless cameras from being pocketable/more portable are the size of the lenses more than the size of the body. What you save in length with the QX1, you more than gain with length and depth. The QX1 is no more portable than a A6xxx camera and it doesn't really save more space in a bag. On top of that, you have to deal with the lag, lack of manual controls and lower spec sensor compared to even the OG A6000. In summary, they aren't competitive enough in the one thing that should be a USP - portability.
It's possible too connect to both phones and tablets. The smart device can be used as a remote control and does not need to be mounted on the back of the QX camera. Also... It does not have a fully manual mode but if a manual focus lens is mounted on it... And the camera is put in the shutter mode it becomes fully manual... This in combination with a tripod make it a great camera to remote control photography of stars in the night sky or drawn of light trails from cars driving at night. I bought my QX1 camera the same year it came out and been happy since then 😎 if you are going to use it... Make sure you got the latest firmware installed on it as well on the left something you are using it with and the latest version of the app needed to controlling it (imagine edge). In the app when not connected to the camera it is possible to press the 3 dots in the top corner... There... Make sure you select original size as transfer to your smart device... I think it is pre-set on a 2MP copy of the photo taken (to save time when transferring photos). ✌
wow I totally forgot about this, glad to know it still works great. might get this next time I need a camera. phones still cant replace proper cams. this looks like a better solution than the new Xiaomi 12S Ultra concept. wish sony updates it
I bought one a few years ago with a broken housing that still worked fine, built a box camera style designed "case" for it using my Mamiya RB67 Pro SD as a reference that it was just attached to via the tripod mount and snuggly fitting around the mounting side to be flush. It works fine, but I really wish they would have put out a model that let you hard connect an external display and released an attachable grip, or some means to give direct settings and shutter control, that I could hack to fit into the same box camera design having zero lag. I didn't have to gut this one, but I would if it meant getting a decent spec box style camera focused on stills that didn't cost an ungodly amount of money. Eventually I'll probably just hack up a Fuji X-E, Panasonic, or Olympus body to fit in the formfactor and have full control/display lag free.
That sounds so cool! I remember Olympus having a similar phone-mounted lens camera when the QX-1 was launched. I would love to see brands revisit this idea in the future.
Imagine how much they could have dominated the vlogger market if they had just released a flip up viewfinder attackment for the back of this thing. It already has the mounting mechanism and could be wired in to the USB port or something. Such a lost opportunity.
Hi Alissa, I got this QX1 many years ago, used with a Sony mobile phone, recently I tried with Pixel 6 pro and tried to installed Imaging Edge Mobile app, but couldn’t link this QX1 with my mobile phone, no luck
hmm, I'm not very certain as I've always been an iPhone user and it seems to be still working with the Imaging Edge software for the iOS. Are you able to contact the developer on the Google App Store for help?
QX1 is a fun camera, you can get some wild angles and unusual shots. I also agree it's a great travel camera, compact and very low key. But the software sucks
Hello, thank you for your video, it helped me a lot, I bought this camera but I bought a telephoto now I want to buy a compact and light lens for travel and music festivals that has a good zoom, which one do you recommend I buy?
Thanks for sharing the video . Very interesting. Do you use this with your IP13 max pro? That’s a massive phone and wondering if it’ll clip in place well.
@@cyncyn1525 I still think you can't beat the bokeh of a lens and camera with a bigger sensor than an iPhone though. I just wish the QX-1 had the fast autofocus of modern Sony cameras.
Thank you for the video, I am considering buying this camera as they sell it in my country for 300$ for a brand new. I’m a beginner photographer and I don’t want to kill myself with the budget right now until I save enough for a more serious camera (I still don’t know which one to buy). I plan to take mostly stills and maybe some video. But the focus is on photos. I wonder if this camera could provide an answer until I can purchase a more semi-professional camera. I also have the iPhone 13 Pro Max. But it’s not the same at all.
Hey! Thanks for your comment! I do think you should choose a different camera that will allow you the finer points of control which the QX-1 may not provide. Perhaps there are good options secondhand for an older DSLR which would "force" you into using manual controls.
@@ArissaHa yes eventually i have decided to save up for a better camera, the Sony ZV-E10. Which is a Good camera for a beginner, a little over the budget for me, but I have bigger plans for the future, so I believe it’s a good entry level camera for me. And thanks again for replying. 🙏🏻
@@Replay_1988 Yes the ZV-E10 is great! I've recommended it to friends who are looking to buy a beginner camera, but still allows a lot of room for growth. Best of luck for your journey!
Given your experience with these, can you give a rough estimate for pricing? What I mean is, how much SHOULD I pay for one these days? I ask because these are getting rare and, unfortunately, a lot of listing I see are from sellers that know they have a rare device amd charge more than it is worth from a pure usability and feature standpoint. From what I can tell, a good comparison is the price of an A6000 as they have fairly similar components. Is that reasonable? I appreciate the form factor and believe I'd prefer it to an A6000 or similar.
It's always an estimate with these things cause it's the value that people tie to them. Like the Canon Vixia, it's being sold more than twice the price now just cause it's popular amongst K-pop stars. Pay the price you think is fair and can afford.
