The 2019 Lexus GX 460 was the perfect vehicle for us to upload on this Throwback Thursday! Hope you guys enjoy this video. We're heading to NJ today to drive and film the 2020 BMW X3 M and X4 M :D
Sofyan, I noticed that you were trying to provide a justification for every critisize you made. Come on, the vehicle is "a throw back" "as you mentioned" in these days features in the market.
Sofyan, I absolutely LOVE your reviews! You are my favorite auto reviewer... So what I say next is with the utmost respect, not hating at all! I enjoy that you are experimenting with a new video format, opening with a voice over while simultaneously doing shots of the vehicle. I, however, REALLY loved your previous intros, where you would say a little, short spiel while standing next to the vehicle and then cutting to the music and shots of the vehicle. I love that! Anyway, my two cents. ✌🏾
Bro. This is an “old money” suv. These are the wealthy people who don’t want to show off and demand reliability and luxury. This is a goldmine for Lexus.
I don’t understand this logic. So u have enough old money for premium fuel for 15 mpg vehicle, but not enough money to lease a new car every 3 years! Ppl with money should not be losing sleep over long term reliability of their cars!
@@mtnslyr if you still have a mindset of "flexing" your wealth, then you're not part of "old money" people. People in the "old money" category didn't have the desire to flexing their wealth they didn't need recognition for their wealth. Unlike new money which usually always need recognition from other people.
Ryan Patel Agreed, accept there are some very expensive vehicles that appreciate in value. I never knew that. Tracy Morgan, the actor, purchased one of those types of vehicles for $1.5 million used.
You can not compare this dinasour with a Range Rover. It produced 300HP from a 4.6 liter engine. Nowadays engines produce that horsepower from a 2 liter engine.
@@malikulamin9948 this uses the same frame and body from a toyota prado and the 4.6L v8 is borrowed from a 2012 and plus model land cruiser just this motor has different tuning and ecu
This engine is the most reliable on the planet. It is the same de-tuned engine from old Lexus LS460 that people love. They take the direct fuel injection out of the GX which makes it less stressed! Lexus knows what tf their doing
@@ronin120 The Lexus offers a higher level of power and luxury. If I was nitpicking I might say that the Premium fuel requirement for the Lexus might be a consideration but that is a very minor quibble for such a fine vehicle. Actual fuel mileage seems to be very close considering the power upgrade that comes with the GX. I suppose you might want to ask your insurance agent whether there is a large difference in insurance costs.
Looking to purchase one..how do you like it? I have a current 4runner and this looks like a luxury version of that vehicle. Ignore the hater below..the LX/Toyota outlast all the competition with no drama.
I’ve owned fourteen Lexus vehicles and I’m currently on my third GX. Love these SUV’s! I get 20mpg on the highway. Not too bad. They are bulletproof! I have the luxury version with all the bells and whistles including the 17 speaker Levinson system.
Colin Flaherty Videos Daily lol none of my parents Toyotas have blown head gasket. Tundra 300k miles, Sequoia 280k miles, RX300 200k miles with no problems but oil change. Plus my 7 year old IS350 is still going strong with 56k miles on it.
Colin Flaherty Videos Daily I do my research and I know a lot them plus I make contents on my IS350. I've never heard of these problems. Like I said my parents drive nothing but Toyotas and never had any problems with them. Maybe you have bad luck with Toyota vehicles
2007 gx470 owner purchased used with 167k miles. Just hit 404k miles with only the timing belt replaced and got rid of the air suspension. I bet I could still sell this for more than any BMW, Volvo, or Merc with half the amount of miles. Not to mention it can out perform all of the aforementioned brands off-road any day of the week!
I completely agree. We have a 2006 and a 2010. Both solid and very off-road capable. They also pull our RV reliably. I have never seen the temp gauge move while towing. Uphill.
I have a 2016 that’s the same car, and I love it! Very squishy material leather, very comfy, reliable, and quiet! May not be the most up to date with technology, but I love it.
I know this Lexus is so very dated, but I've always found it charming and timeless. It looks like it belongs in a town's "old money neighborhoods." And I'm certain it would be reliable and comfortable 20 years from now. If I was in the market for an SUV in this price range, I'd give it serious consideration. Great review as usual!
As an owner of a 2015 GX and previous owner of a 2007 GX I can tell you exactly why it still moved 30k Units last year despite the aging design. 1) Ultra Low Depreciation Value 2) Reliability/Quality 3) Body on Frame (enough said) 4) Off-Road Capability vs. 4runner is better 5) The V8 . The GX offers things that make it outdated but a true SUV. SUV's like the Range Rover, X5, and Q7, and even the XC90 are beautiful but they will NEVER have the same value as this one and will never be as reliable. They are fun to drive but it's own right so is the GX. This thing is a tank and it will be around for years to come.
Love this truck. It’s so underestimated and under appreciated. It’s not a poser SUV. The luxury variant is the better option. Folks who buy this aren’t getting it for everyday 3rd row use. This doesn’t compete with crossovers it competes with GLE, X5... the 2020 will be out soon. The G wagon was just updated and was the oldest vehicle in the MB lineup but you journalists loved it. Why the complaints with Toyota?
Don't expect much from the 2020 model. Aim for the 2021-2022 model. 2020 is just another facelift based one the pics that have been leaked of it so far. New LED headlights, new grill, new steering and maybe a minor interior update, possible update to the infotainment if anything. It's a stopgap while they work on the all new one. The new one however is said to be like a baby LX, so that'll be something to look forward to.
@@Monkeyseemonkey79 That's a matter of opinion, I think. Being the owner of one myself I'd say it has plenty of personality. It's not iconic, I'll give you that. It won't stand out in the quirkiness department like a Volvo, or match the ultra-high tech experience of the German luxury SUVs. But it'll outlive them both and remain comfortable the entire time doing it. As the review says, it's really an experience in old-school stately luxury. And on top of that, it'll eat most other SUVs for breakfast off-road. It's essentially a luxury version of the same vehicle that's been a UN Peacekeeping staple for decades now, with a more powerful engine and better transmission. Properly prepared, it'll go anywhere, and will still outlive most of its peers. That in itself is a persona that stands out among its rivals. It'll just fulfill that persona while not being as fancy or RGB-LED-filled on the inside as a Mercedes :P
2019 owner here. The low depreciation takes the sting out of the price. Those nice Volvos and BMW's can have soul destroying depreciation. An alignment that adds some caster angle makes it track much better.
Yea, this design has worked well for a while and does depreciate slowly. Also, buyers of these vehicles ( not saying you ) are generally older people with grandkids and within their prime buying ages were buying mid to late 2000's vehicles and are very used to these types of interior designs and is comfortable and easy for them to use. People bought 30,000 last year for a reason. Like I said, maybe a well off 25 year old isn't gonna buy this to travel the country with his buddies, but a 45-70 year old mature adult will buy this up and love it. Convenient and practical and familiar for most of the buyers. All these new fancy technologies make newer vehicles depreciate quick for a reason.
@@_dmfd Being 62 and having worked a career in auto tire and service, I have a distinctly different outlook than many folks on what impresses me in a car or truck. Big fragile wheels/tires and infotainment system centered reviews don't do it for me. At least these Redline reviews are not overweighted on the info tech stuff.
@@robertchandler2573 I completely understand and it seems you fit in the demographic I was speaking. Although I am 24, and do appreciate modern technologies - I care way more about reliability and day to day performance. I grew up thru the 90's and 2000's before every car was as advanced as they are today, and appreciate a modern style without all the crazy amenities. While GPS, lane keep, AWD, and other safety tech I feel is a necessity in today's vehicles, the other stuff I dont see spending all the extra money on. It hurts resale value the more you add, and is almost guaranteed to break. Excessive Electronics are nice, but they wear out so fast. I drive a 2014 Chevy Malibu LTZ V6, my girlfriend drives a 2012 Kia Forte5 SX, and even those can be overwhelming with tech for people who aren't as inclined as others. I drove my buddies 2019 Audi RS3 the other day, and I am very inclined with modern tech, but I was even overwhelmed by all the distractions that car had while driving. Its very reminiscent of what Lincoln was doing with their last generation of Town Cars. Great, big, body on frame full size estate sedans that were equipped well enough for the time, but were targeting a mature or elderly demographic. Extremely user friendly and extremely reliable, at a decent price for the time. Not too mention the cost of cars now a days. Especially American made. A vehicle is a tool for your life, and I might think differently than most at my age, but I'd rather keep a car as long as possible and have it be as reliable as possible thru its life, than spend 45k every 5-7 years just because I want what's new.
I also own a 2019 GX. What vehicle in that segment has incredible reliability, can tow, is body on frame, and a luxurious refined ride and interior. This one. It was an easy choice for me. The tech is dated but it works well and that was low priority on our list. I personally love the look, doesnt look like anything else out there.
Still one of the best trucks money can buy. For someone like me. Reliable, luxurious, bulletproof, insane build quality. I love the old school trucks from Toyota and Lexus
@@mybro727 lol you mean your brainwashed bro. Let me guess you only like bmw and Mercedes etc... I own a bmw and had a Mercedes and also have a gx460. Trust me this build quality shits on bmw if you think otherwise YOU are brainwashed. “You people” are stupid
it kills me every time Sofyan says 4Runner(foreigner) lol. At this point I think he's just trolling, which is hilarious, but I'm so looking forward to his 2020 Toyota Foreigner review just to read the comments
I like it too, but Lexus's is the ugliest version of it. Really like Mazdas, Lincoln, and and most European style ones. Basically the ones that are boxy or trapezoidal.
We just traded in our 2016 for the 2019 as this is the last year before they get ride of the V8 and mess it up. We love this thing which has been the Most Reliable Vehicle in the US for 4 years in a row. Our friend have a BMW that has been in the shop several times and another has the MB GLE and electronics are messed up. This thing is bullet proof and so smooth on long distances. It also keeps it value better than any other SUV in its class. The only thing I wish it has was Apple CarPlay and the turn signal you spoke about. We average almost 20mpg on highway.
I believe these SUV's ( although getting refreshed for 2020 ) are still relevant in Lexus' line up for two major reasons. One is depreciation. These SUV's hold onto their value for as long as this truck will run. Modern cars depreciate so fast because they are loaded with new designs and technologies that are not very reliable after 5-7 years. Small placement turbo 4's and 6's are just not as reliable as a solid, naturally aspirated version. Yea, the V8 is not very economical, but it will run longer than any of us here. For two, the people interested in these vehicles are generally mature adults with grandkids. 85% of grandparents buying cars today were in their prime buying age in the mid to late 2000's. The technologies ( lack there of ) are familiar to them and do not overwhelm a general consumer. Yes, this vehicle is very reminiscent of 2006-2012, though it is easy and reliable for the mass that is purchasing this vehicle that can comfortably haul their extended growing families around while they're being babysitter for the younger working adults. Like I said, I know a well off, 25 year old isn't gonna be buying this car to travel the country with his buddies, but this design has and still works great for " older " people ( not saying elderly ) hauling their family around knowing their car isn't losing the price a year that the X5 they could have purchased would be.
This video just popped up... I'm a well off 23 year old that bought a Lux 17 for the exact reason you said a 25yo wouldn't want to 🤣🤣 I can appreciate everything inside while recognizing it's shortcomings without letting those compromise my appreciation for the vehicle. I love lexus, this one's my fifth and first SUV. Tried ES, GS, LS, and even RC most recently but riding around in a high clearance 4wd SUV is needed now that I've moved up north... I just found your comment amusing. Hope you find mine as well.
Awww come on you were hating on the GX on this review. You didn’t mention how capable it is in bad weather and trails. This is the truck you would want if Armageddon came. When all of these other vehicles are in the junkyard the Lexus will still be going strong. But I do agree it’s time for a refresh. Anyways great informative and entertaining review as usual.
@@wildk5367 unfortunately for Lexus there are many other safe and practical SUVs out there. People spending 70K on an SUV like reliability, but they are not going to purchase something that is a dinosaur they would rather buy a car that might be slightly less reliable but will be much more presentable.
A Commentator I know someone that doesn’t like the small interiors that cars provide, everyone is different. In America/Canada where there are huge trucks driving around all the time, it safer to be in a suv like this than a car that would get run over. Both have preventative measures, but if your caught in an accident your safer in a big suv
Reasons to take this over a BMW X5 or Volvo XC90? Umm let's see...you can take this to a fancy restaurant with your date and afterwards go off roading for some entertainment. After the two of you hit it off and get married and have children and your kid turns 18 you can pass on your "old" GX460 to little Sarah who is all grown up now and heading off to Stanford. Let's see you do that with a XC90 or X5.
Separate opening glass is a super handy feature I use all the time. I have a 2010 Ford Escape. I know a couple that has a GX. She does a short commute with it and they use it to tow on the weekends. It’s a true truck, not a crossover.
@@ronin120 BMW is way better than Lexus that's why he doesn't complain about them. This is a 2020 car with a 20 year old platform, 30 year old interior and 40 year old exterior
s50201 from I heard it’s gonna look like a baby LX570. For example new front bumper, headlights, and taillights. Upgrade dashboard with new screen similar to LX570. CarPlay, Android Auto. It’s just like they did to LX570 back in 2016 which look 10 times better
You either get the GX or you don't. I have owned 2 and may be owning a third soon. Outside of heavy off-road/rocks this will get you just about anywhere you want to go.. very comfortably. It is also a very good base platform for a serious off-roader if you have the $ to spare.
I agree with Sofian on 2 points. 1. Improve the fuel economy more since people don't buy them for power as fuel price is volatile. 2. Many upgrades nowadays are software related & that can be easily integrated in the infortainment system. Bulletproof yeah but I'd take a naturally aspirated engine over any turbos.l just for reliability.
I really like this new format. With the footage while you speak at the same time. Feels like your video has an even better production value than usual.
What a train wreck. Look how snobby I am everyone! Nothing is good enough. He turns the shifter around to hide the wood saying I can't believe they delivered this thing to me with this wood showing, there, that's better, he turns it backwards and claims he fixed it. This guy cares mostly about looks and can't even get that right. Typical critic that can't build a thing but loves to be so disappointed at everyone's designs and mostly meaningless crap that no one cars about when buying a car. They should of done this, they should have done that, I"m so shocked and so disappointed, always having a bad hair day.
This looks like the Lexus that your grandfather bought when he retired from his job with the power company 12 yrs ago after 30 years of service as a gift to himself and he has kept it in mint condition because everyone knows grandpa Peter doesn’t allow eating or drinking in his New / old 2007 Lexus GX
*Holy crapppp* This 2019 GX has the SAME infotainment as my uncle's 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid... that is mind blowing - I was like 7 when they bought that Highlander
30,000 people bought it last year because they used their head and not their heart. It's a luxurious SUV that works ALL the time and stays out of the workshop unlike its European counterparts.
We just purchased the midnight blue color with nebula grey interior. We love it. It rides so smooth and it gets the looks from everyone. We are very happy...
It's true that you can get an XC90 or a BMW M5 instead but in 10 years the GX will still work perfectly and still be worth something while the Volvo and the BMW will be worthless and broken.
I like my 2016 GX460 sooooooooo much, no bother to even look at European ones - absolutely no interest. The next one still GX460, after 5 years+ ... If I consider how much I am going to save from repairs, the poor gas mileage can be totally ignored! .
For anybody who complains about a V6 in 4Runner, this is a very great luxury off-roader, also built around the similar platform & dimensions to 4Runner.
Despite everything..this vehicle is still bulletproof and will be very reliable in the future whenever he’s done praising these new vehicles that are all tech and no substance. It could definitely use some updates but sure enough it still embodies what people are supposed to look for in car which is quality and reliability BUILT TO LAST.
The reliability comments are played out on every Lexus video. I get that Toyota/Lexus is conservative to keep higher reliability, but if I'm paying this much it gets to a certain point where I'd sacrifice some reliability for something I really enjoy. Although reliability is important, I couldn't find myself to put up with such an outdated interior/exterior on such a new and expensive automobile.
Reliability SHOULD NEVER BE PLAYED OUT when investing thousands of dollars into a car. Cars are investments. I’d rather spend more up front for something that’s gonna save me more money down the line than something that’s expensive as hell up front and down the line. QUALITY AND RELIABILITY equals money. A good 70% of the features tech wise that they put in cars today many blue collar families don’t care about nor do they have patience to try to figure it all out. Families buy these so they can be given down the line and reliable for years to come. These cars are given to children and grandchildren for a REASON. Whenever you start sacrificing reliability and tech for something that can change the ambient lighting to your “Mood” and you can talk to like Siri you’re in trouble. I never said it didn’t need updates I’m just saying at the end of the day it’s bulletproof versus things like BMWs. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about cars knows how some luxury brands are poster children for tech and no long term reliability without paying A lot more down the line.
Savannah G First, a car isn’t an investment. It’s a depreciating asset. Second, if all you’re after is an appliance to get you from point A to B, then sure reliability may be the only factor. However, most modern cars(especially if you’re buying new) are very reliable. While some may see more electronics issues, very few will leave you stranded on the side of the road. Generally, since I enjoy the driving experience, I’d prefer something I actually want to drive, rather than just picking the Lexus purely because of reliability. Don’t shit on me, I’m a fan of Lexus, but it’s annoying how Lexus to gets a free pass on their bullshit “because reliability derp derp”. Have a nice day.
ezekiel1hen if you’re paying for years and years and potentially making this your car for years it is an investment. Between Gas, oil changes, car washes, brakes, all fluids etc. it is an investment. I never said they get a free pass at all. What I said was reliability is and should be far more important. And in reverse BMW and BENZ and FCA and other brands shouldn’t just get passes as good cars because they have the latest tech either since we’re going there. I openly admitted it needed some updates. What you’re missing is the overall formula is key for them. There is a reason why millions of them have been sold and continue to be sold. Now you have a nice day.
Savannah G no a car is not an investment at all unless you have some ridiculous rare model a car will always depreciate the moment you drive off the lot
Such a great truck. You should have took this opportunity to focus on the strengths and not It being older which is obvious Love that V8 engine even tho it’s not efficient. The engine is very smooth and punchy. Very strong long lasting vehicle great buy it you want something long term. Not to mention it will drive anywhere in ANY weather. Ride is really smooth also I remember driving the older one.
f181234 actually they do. Quick google search you will see a ton kitted in off road gear and they look badass. Beside even if the Onwer doesn’t take I off Road that’s a great peace of mind to have knowing you will never get stuck
I have a 2010 Lexus RX350 with 110, 000 km. (68,000 miles). I am 70 yrs. old. I have a strong feeling it will outlast me. That's how reliable Lexus vehicles are.
The best truck money can buy is the land cruiser and land cruiser Prado ( Lexus GX460). This car is for those who have a family , know their cars , like to off-road , aren’t city liberals or millennials , value elegance , want a v8 and torque , want space and comfort . If you are a city skinny punk , that can’t put a nail in a wall , and orders delivery food because you can’t cook = this isn’t a car for you . If you are a conservative guy like me , married, makes good money , has kids and pets , and a house , like to drive in a nice truck with room and style , and at the same time take it camping to the woods - that’s a truck for you 👍🏻. Bought a 2019 , will keep it forever . Had a 2004 with 275 k miles . And a 1999 land cruiser with 432 thousand miles that I sold for 9 grand .
Александр Король you sound stupid.. Somehow buying an suv is about politics to you and being a millennial and/or a liberal is conflated? Grow up, Russian troll.
I absolutely love the Lexus GX 460. It may not be the most technologically avant-garde product on the market but it has bulletproof reliability. It still manages to retain understated luxury coupled with off road prowess. The absolute only luxury car brand I’d consider would be Lexus. The rest can’t compare to Lexus reliability.
My family are big fans of Toyota and Lexus. We have had a Lexus GX since 2005. It still rides well, although it's getting old so inspections are obviously pricier. We love the GX then and we still love it now. It's a good family luxury car, if you only have 4 people sitting in there for long periods of time :)
Nice review save for the constant "old" comments. As for the Volvo XC90 I have a friend who had nothing but problems with her 2017. Infotainment screen and dash would not come on or simply cease to function at random. Vehicle left her stranded with dead battery on multiple occasions and countless times the climate controls would go on the blink. Dealership had no idea of what was wrong with it. Ended up getting it lemon lawed but not before involving legal representation because the dealer would state "everything functions as intended" when that wasn't the case. She now has a Q7 that has been going strong with zero complaints.
People: we need add more fancy techs in cars that we don't need. Also people: they just don't make them like they used to, just bring back the old simple models.
Body on frame, truck SUV. Buttery smooth, comfortable, quiet and bulletproof. Sold! Gonna pick up a 2019-2020 LCertified this week or next. Wife already has a RX350L, so we have the wimpy car based crossover covered. 😉
I have a 2012 gx460 and the stock springs does not ride very well. However, I have Icon lift which makes the ride so much better. The handling feels better. Picked up this for the purpose of offroading and overlanding.
You complained entire video about how old the GX is but people who have this in their shortlist are not looking at all “gimmicks” newer SUVs are offering over reliability and ride quality of this. Yes it’s old, yes it doesn’t have Apple car play, yes it doesn’t have all the gadgets and gimmicks that newer platform SUVs have, what the GX offers is that none of the ones you mentioned at the end of video can even come close to offer, 1st you can pay the high price tag for GX today and Gaurantee yourself a problem free ride for next twenty years that even your grand kids can drive while the other cars you mentioned are rotting in the junkyard, the 2nd reason anyone will buy this is because it’s based on land cruiser platform, it is a true off-road capable and can go places that X7, Xc90 and all those shiny new SUVs can even dream of.
I would honestly say that if Lexus still offered it with this bodystylw now, I would go ahead and buy it. I love the design, it is timeless, and it's just a luxurious vehicle that will last year decades if you treat it well. This GX is proven.
In Europe you can take it with a 3.0 turbo diesel and 2 door and a manual transmission. If they would bring it here, would be awesome. Anyway, this car last forever, that’s why people buy it.
I like, real deal body on frame SUV’s opposed to untibody minivans masquerading as an SUV. Hell, Honda Odyssey, Ridgeline and Pilot are all built on the same chassis and that’s just one example.
hello, I own a gx 460 2010, I know that the car needs to update some things, but I tell you, in 9 years this car has only changed the oil and tires just that, it is very quiet on the road, it is comfortable and very, very reliable, I recommend them, there are many cars with more technology than lexus, but they are also more problematic, and in terms of resale value this lexus keeps the price very good.
I test drove this and the seats were not comfortable at all. They can do better. Also now I think about it the only reason why they are so reliable is because they don't change anything much so they are able to perfect it but we as fans are getting tired of the same thing.
Most "luxury" manufacturers are getting lazy. Lexus products only have reliability to rest on aside from that they're dinosaurs, Cadillac has good tech but bad execution with interior design. Lincoln is getting better, Acura and Infiniti are rebrands. Audi, Mercedes, and BMW have the best tech and designs but the worst reliability.
I have to admit that I did not appreciate your attitude with this review. I am not blasting you; this is just an observation. I like this car/truck I am waiting for the new version. You repeated yourself too much; this vehicle is going to appeal to a specific segment of the population; people love the reliability and the comfort of it. I want a V8 and I want to put premium gas in my tank, all the while sitting in the best view in town. Good job I can't wait for you to review the new one and I hope Lexus listens to you and makes the appropriate modifications.
Always love your reviews. Honest, detailed and thorough. Keep up the good work! I watch all your reviews even vehicles I'm not interested in. Like this dated turd! LOL
@Jack Z yes lots of opinions/time on aesthethics and subjective stuff. Not as much facts and numbers. Have u looked at alex on autos? Less opinion and more presentation of the vehicle stats, class comparos, charts, etc.
Jack Z no this review is honest there’s no way Lexus or any other brands should be charging over $50k for an unchanged product literally from 2006 in 2019 that’s just pathetic and lazy
The comfort and sport modes minimally effect ride comfort (although you will feel a bit of difference on a very bumpy road). But where you do notice the difference is in the steering response. In sport the KDSS suspension system (which you didn't even mention) keeps the vehicle more upright in turns, which IMO helps steering response. In comfort, the car has more body roll and is more floaty in turns. I think that's where your steering issues and need to slow down so much on ramps came from. I drive my gx in the middle setting, but in sport it actually feels very responsive for being a bit of a boat on the road.
