After 5 years and 1/3 million views, I decided to give one of my most popular videos a 2020 makeover. Now with even more parts! If you're just starting to get familiar with changing parts on your Miata, I'm here to tell you that you're capable of FAR more than you think you are. It is intimidating at first, but if you just start slow and have some friends help, you'll go from replacing plugs to bolting on a turbo in no time. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I bought my NA about 8 months ago. I had no idea on how to work on cars. Not even an oil change. There was an oil leak by the CAS. Followed one of your videos and changed the o-ring. Unfortunately my dumbass had a harder time putting it back in and messed up timing. So now I had to set timing. Not a big deal, ordered a timing light from Amazon and again watched one of your videos on how to do it and decided to do it in an evening. Got my timing light, jumped the car into diagnostic mode, got everything set up, all good right? NO! There were no reference points/marks to align the timing marks. I thought, well there's no possible way that they just disappear right? Wellll, the previous owner replaced timing belt, water pump and all that good stuff and for some reason he thought that not putting back the lower timing covers is a good idea. It was sitting in a bag that I got with the car. So, my car is out of timing. No way to time it. Didn't have money to take it to a mechanic, no friends, and no garage. Not even tools. Decided to tackle this somehow by myself. I've already watched your "party miatas" videos countless times even before I bought the car. Watched it several times more, went and bought a 50 piece tool box from Harbor Freight and took stuff apart piece by piece in the apartment driveway. I may have looked like a total clown, but damn it felt good after I put my timing covers back, set proper timing after working on it for 2 days. The only help I had was your videos. Since then, I've been fixing my own cars, parents and didn't have to pay for a mechanic since then. I have tools, I have youtube. That introduction and the instructions I had just motivated me even more. Since then, I've done countless jobs that would have costed several hundred dollars. Thank you so much Greg. You don't even know the amount of respect I have for you putting out videos like this.

At 20:00, it's important to mention that there is another mark to the left of the TDC mark that is the tension mark. 1 5/6 turns is stopping at EXACTLY that mark after ONE full rotation. Tighten the tensioner bolt to lock the tension, then do 2 1/6 turns (ending at TDC) and everything should line up back up again provided the timing was set properly. Also make sure your car is in neutral while doing this lol

As far as I know this is not needed on the Miata because unlike some cars it does not have any valve that shuts off the flow of water to the heater core, it's always flowing. I know on my Z32 it did have that valve though, so every car is different.

This is great for people just getting into Miatas. I've replaced everything on your list overtime on my '91 out of necessity. It would have been so much easier if I had this video when I bought the car. Turbos, wheels and suspension are awesome, but maintenance always comes first if you want your car to work. Also, to anyone doing a timing belt job on a Miata, I HIGHLY recommend getting a beefy 1/2 drive impact (electric or pneumatic), and a 21 mm swivel impact socket. I had a 4ft cheater pipe with a helper locking the rear wheels and I could not get it off. The torque from the bar felt like it was going to knock the car off the jack stands. I jammed my 1/2 drive dewalt impact on there with a swivel and it busted it off in half a second. Just barely cleared the condenser. Worth every penny.

Just finished my timing belt and water pump job for the first time thanks to this video! It wasn't without turmoil though. The lower bolt of the water pump was loose by about half a turn and it was dripping very slowly behind the timing cover, down the crank nose, and off the oil pan when the car was running. I went back in and made sure all 4 bolts were tightened properly. After I put it all back together, my car cranked but just wasn't firing up...I put the trigger wheel on backwards. Great. Went back in again, flipped the trigger wheel, put it all back and it started right up. I let the car run for a bit and drove for a bit making some frequent stops to peek under the hood and thankfully saw no signs of leaking or coolant smell. Your channel has been invaluable and I've learned so much about wrenching just from doing this single job alone. I feel so much more equipped to work on my vehicles now. Thanks Greg!

I’ve been absolutely transfixed by your maintenance videos. The lack of music (or very subtle music) is a big bonus. Don’t even have a Miata yet, but once the snow starts melting up here in Canada I will be getting one. Coming off working on my Audi A5 these things look very DIY-friendly. Can’t wait to mod and enjoy 90s simplicity again

For the shifter rebuild: Anyone with a 6-speed, you dont have any fluid to suck out of the turret. and you can consider the turret a fill hole if youre replacing the fluid completely. Another tip: if your shifter rattles when its cold out, get some teflon tape (the stuff used for plumbing) and wrap the threads before putting the shift knob on.

This winter I have my 99 up on stands for a suspension refresh (superpro bushings, koni str.t's, por 15 paint on the control arms, new sway bar end links). And I also have to weld in repair panels into the rusted front frame rails and have to remove the radiator to do this. So of course now is the best time to upgrade the factory radiator and hoses. So of course this also seems like the best time to replace the timing belt along with all the other parts you replaced on your car. I was unsure about tackling this on my own but watching you I think has given me the confidence to do the job. Thank you for such comprehensive guide. Cheers

The best after black Friday video ever! Love the quality btw. Also I bought a miata na6 91 a month ago. It runs like shit but i got it for 650 on Craig in Santee. Its black and wasn't running. Got it running changing the tps and replacing the afm. I really need to work on it but work has me 6/7 days slaving. Love your content, will put it to use soon.

Thank you for the complete guide, but I still a fan of the original timing belt video; more detailed. I will rewatch both of these before doing it to my NA. Thanks for the tool suggestions and Treasure Coast's link.

It's poetic, Craig. I've used your videos to work on my NA countless times, and I watched this one while replacing the clock spring on my new to me MSM. And forgot to put the nut that holds the steering wheel back on. Twice. And be proud, I've spent an intake and downpipe worth of money on maintenance bits before going for power. I'm proud of me.

HOLY SHIT IM FINALLY DONE Spent 3 hours first day, 15 hours second day. I did all of the engine work and the fuel filter (I had already fixed my shift knob in the past). This has been by far the most technically challenging mechanical job I have done but I can tell it’s totally worth it. Thank you so much miata dad, couldn’t have done it without you Wanted to add that for crankshaft bolt and cam gear bolt, mine were solidly stuck (previous owner may have used loctite red) that even using over 150 ftlbs torque, I could not get them off. Ended up impacting them, worked like a charm. There was a debate online about whether or not you can impact the cam gears and an ASE mechanic said it should be fine fwiw

Great vid as always. I slapped a turbo on my Miata a year ago and still haven't done a timing belt...I should probably look into that
